she leads the way

Summary:

Her giggle fills the kitchen, and the next second he feels her hands in his own once more as she pulls him up from his chair.

“Dance with me.”

Notes:

I'm on a roll with putting these oneshots out. I have an essay to write but my adhd literally prevents me from starting until I get these out of my system, I absolutely love the Encanto adults. I already have a short Pepa/Félix hurt/comfort oneshot half done as the next thing to be posted.

Also, the unnamed song in this story? It's indeed a real song, though it was obviously not yet created in the time period that the fanfic takes place in, but I decided to simply use some creative freedom.

Work Text:

He sits down on a chair in her kitchen as she’s in the middle of making some carimañolas. He watches her every move with a burning passion, transfixed by her talent in the kitchen. Even though they’d known each other for a good sixteen years since the age of five, Agustín never got tired of seeing Julieta in the kitchen.

He was impressed by her, beyond belief, and he could look at her for hours as she hummed to herself between tasks. The way she always had a certain glow over herself and such an adorable smile on her face. She was his angel, his goddess.

Delicate dark brown eyes, vivid black hair and a smile and a slight that he would die for. It takes all of his willpower to not simply walk up to her and kiss her right then and there. He knew it would probably end in him falling over into the pots and pans, or burning himself on the stove, or him setting something on fire. There was a reason he was banned from helping in the kitchen after all, mostly for his own safety and to prevent any distractions.

He didn’t mind though, watching Julieta was entertaining enough.

As he sees her put everything in a deep pan, he compliments her.

“You’re doing great, querida.”

He caught her attention and turns around to give him a sweet, sincere smile and blows him a kiss before she turns back around again to put down the last of the carimañolas. Agustín’s heart skips a beat as it always does when Julieta shoes him affection, he still haven’t gotten over the fact that he was honored to call her his, even after two years into their relationship.

He hears the sound of frying increase, and the moment the last one is in Julieta immediately leaves the stove to embrace him. She presses a soft kiss onto his lips, and he kisses her back.

“How are you feeling, mi amor?”

“I love you.”

She giggles, and Agustín feels the warmth as their fingers interlock when Julieta squeezes his hands and pulls them towards her chest as she leans forward.

“And I love you too, Agustín. No injuries?”

He shakes his head, actually proud of himself. It was in the middle of the day, and he still hadn’t been in need of one of Julieta’s pieces of food. It was a literal miracle to everyone.

“None yet, I think I’m breaking a new record!”

“Just don’t jinx it sweetie.”

She kisses him once more, and then let’s go as she walks back to the stove, humming to herself as she checks on the carimañolas. Not done yet, he realizes as Julieta puts a hand on her hip as she continues to hum the same melody to pass the time, now with her mouth open, all notes being heard much more clearly and louder. Her voice is so smooth, like that of an angel. He recognizes the song immediately, and his eyes light up. it starts with a quarter A sharp, another quarter A sharp, an eight F, followed by an eight G, another quarter A sharp, an eight B, an eight C, a quarter C, and a half note B to finish the phrase, the very first line of the song with vocals, the first refrain after an instrumental introduction. He would recognize the song anywhere, even when it was only the melody. If Julieta had actually decided to sing the actual words to it , right out in the open, he knew he would have gone insane right then and there. As much as he adored her and the song, the actual words of it was not something either of them braved to sing in the house of the Madrigals because of its suggestive nature.

“This is…” he begins, as he thinks of the many wonderful nights where Julieta practically begged him to play the piano for her. He always made sure to learn new songs in order to impress her, but there was always one very particular song he always ended up playing by her request. Just thinking about it fills him with joy.

He sees how she nods before she answers.

“Of course, it’s my favorite. It sounds so much better on the piano though.”

“Are you kidding? Your voice is beautiful, I could listen to it for hours.”

“You’re flattering me cariño, I’m blushing.”

“Julieta, my angel,” he replies, making huge motions with his arms before he pretends to bow. Her giggle fills the kitchen, and the next second he feels her hands in his own once more as she pulls him up from his chair.

“Dance with me.”

He nods, and carefully follows as Julieta takes the first steps and leads him around. She’s still humming, music to his ears, and Agustín is doing his very best to keep up with his wonderful goddess of a girlfriend. He’s always been much better at following than leading a dance, and he feels grateful that Julieta always seems to take charge with no problem, helping him alone the way.

She’s his guiding light.

He gets lost in the moment, he stares into her big brown eyes and swears time stops mattering. There’s just the two of them together in their little infinity, dancing so closely together, so close. There’s laughter and joy, and he swears he never wants the moment to end. His hands are on her hips, and her arms are around his shoulders as they slow down, they’re basically stomping into the ground to the melody of the song, practically standing still as their foreheads touch. Julieta stops singing, and the two of them smile in silence.

He would do anything for her, this beautiful woman that had stolen his heart.

They kiss, and in a split second Agustín feels all of the joy and wonder they’ve ever felt together all at once, feeling whole . He’s just about to tell her how much he loves her once more, but he takes a step back before falling backwards, landing into the hard tiles of the Casita with his back first, with Julieta landing on top of him. For half a second, they just stare at each other.

Her face is red, and she laughs so beautifully that the man swore her had just found the meaning of life. Julieta is his joy, his sunshine. His other half.

“Ay, Agustín,” she says teasingly before she kisses his cheek and gets up. “Be careful.”

She helps him up, and he lets out a painful groan, pain radiating from his back. Julieta notices immediately and rolls her eyes as she walks up to the stove. The food is done, and Agustín gets a freshly made carimañola in his hand that he eats in just a few bites. He feels as good as new, like he had never been injured in the first place and then finally adjusts his glasses.

“Looks like I did jinx it.”

He looks at her awkwardly, but all he can see on her slightly red face is a dreaming gaze and a twinkle in her eyes. A slight longing, exactly the way he feels towards her. She’s irresistible, an inhuman wonder with a heart of gold and a tender gaze and touch.

“Ay, the things you do to me, Agustín…”

She says it in a gentle voice, but he sees the loving firmness in her eyes that he has gotten so used to over the years. He gulps, feeling embarrassment flush across his body as she embraces him tightly, her arms around his neck as she pulls him down towards her. “It’s hard to keep myself off of you.”

He lets out an excitedly nervous gulp. He’s known Julieta long enough to know what this meant and what it would lead to. Julieta has always been like this, so straight forward and confident, taking charge. She was his goddess, and he would follow. He felt honored by the fact that Julieta, his world , desired him in the same way he desired her. He would do anything she begged him too, including following her into the sun.

She kisses him, a lot more passionately than he would have expected in the kitchen, and Agustín has to fight back a surprised squeal that makes his girlfriend giggle. She gives him a knowing grin and tightens her grip for a split second as she leans towards his ear and whispers the whole first verse of the song she had previously been humming before she lets go and instead takes his hands, lightly pulling him after her as they leave the kitchen. Desire runs through him like electricity. No one else is home and wouldn’t be for at least another hour, they wouldn’t need Pepa to cover for them for once.

“Follow me.”

“Lead the way, mi amor.”
