Blurred Lines

Summary:

"I need your help."

Lumine arched a brow at that, clearly caught off guard by his request before she lowered her brows into a confused frown.

“What help would a Harbinger like you possibly need from me out of all people?" Lumine finally asked, the spark of curiosity that momentarily flickered in her eyes not going unnoticed by the Harbinger whose smile merely sharpened.

“All I need is three days.”

Lumine’s eyes sparked in confusion as she tipped her head aside, brows pinching together in confusion as her golden eyes flashed in mild curiosity.

“Three days?”

Childe then leaned forward in his seat to bring their faces closer as if he was telling her a secret, blue orbs shining with a gleam Lumine knew meant no good and when she saw the Harbinger’s lips curl upwards into a foxy smile, she felt her stomach sink.

“For three days, I need you to pretend to be my girlfriend.”

-

In which Childe tricks Lumine into getting her to pose as his fake-girlfriend for a mission and the lines get blurred.

Work Text:

Lumine should have known better than to agree to Harbinger's challenge.

It had started out as an ordinary day like any other, the blonde leaving to meet the Harbinger for their weekly sparring session at the Golden House and unaware that this would mark the beginning of her dismay.

“How about we make things a little more interesting this time?” The Harbinger had drawled with an innocent smile Lumine knew better than to trust, the blonde crossing her arms above her chest as she shot him a dubious frown.

“More interesting.” The Traveler echoed, a brow arched as she tipped her head aside. “What do you suggest?”

Asking turned out to have been her first mistake, the way his smile morphed into a grin ought to be enough to set the alarm bells off in her mind and yet, when he had made his rather simple proposal, she didn’t find any reason as to why she should refuse his small request.

“The winner receives one favor from the loser.” Childe announced, his hydro blade resting on his shoulder as his ocean orbs gleamed dangerously in the dim light of the Golden House. “No more, no less.”

She had agreed then, believing that he would be unable to beat her after his unlucky streak of three losses in a row, but when she found the sharp blade of the smug Harbinger’s pressed against her delicate neck not too much later, she realized that underestimating him had been her second mistake.

Which ultimately led her to her third, and most fatal one.

“You what?”

Lumine’s eyes flashed in surprise from where she was seated at the small table in Liuli Pavillion, the hot liquid placed in the cup in front of her remaining untouched as the Harbinger in front of her shot her a grin and leaned back in his seat.

“I need your help.”

Lumine arched a brow at his words, clearly caught off guard by his request but upon seeing that his expression not once wavered, she eventually lowered them into a confused frown.

Childe was not one to ask for others' help when he could do things on his own and have his men to take care of the dirty work he didn’t feel like doing, and the fact that he came to her out of all people was enough to make her suspicious of his intentions.

“What help would a Harbinger like you possibly need from me?” Lumine wondered before her golden eyes narrowed in suspicion. “Not to mention that I have no intention of helping the Fatui in the first place after you nearly drowned Liyue.”

The sound of his smooth chuckle reached her ears as he tipped his head aside, gloved finger tapping on his upper arm as his blue orbs twinkled in amusement.

“The Fatui is after some information that turns out to be more challenging to obtain than anticipated.” Childe revealed as he tipped his head aside, his smile turning innocent in a way his eyes betrayed. “And upon realizing that I won't be able to get it by myself, I couldn’t think of anyone more suited to be my partner on this mission than you.”

“Are you sure that it isn’t because the Fatui is running out of recruits for you to bully, Tartaglia?” Lumine sweetly returned, earning her a smug smile from Childe who leaned forward to rest his elbow on the table before he placed his chin on the palm of his gloved hand.

“We are by no means short-staffed, but this mission requests a certain finesse I cannot possibly expect from my men.” Childe smoothly returned, ocean orbs sparkling as his grin sharpened. “Besides, I’m confident that with you by my side, the mission will be a piece of cake.”

Lumine didn’t trust the gleam his eyes held, nor the innocent smile on his lips that didn’t suit the cunning Harbinger in the least and although she knew better than to blindly accept his request, she wasn’t going to go back on her word either.

“Well, what is it that you need me out of all people to help you with?” Lumine finally asked, the spark of curiosity that momentarily flickered in her eyes not going unnoticed by the Harbinger whose smile merely sharpened.

It took a few moments for the words to fully register, the meaning of his words not hitting her until a few beats of silence passed and once it finally did hit her, her eyes widened in disbelief.

“You need me to what?” Lumine exclaimed, clearly not trusting her own hearing as she nearly felt the cup slip from her hands.

Surely she hadn’t heard right, because there was no way that Childe just asked her to pretend to be his girlfriend-but the second she saw his eyes crinkle in a way that told her that yes, he was indeed very serious, her stomach sank.

“It’s only for three days.” He assured her with a smile, and Lumine noticed that he sounded considerably more nonchalant about the entire situation than he should have. “Since it’s an undercover mission, I need someone whom I can rely on to not mess up as well as complement me, and what better-qualified person is there other than you?”

He couldn’t be serious.

Lumine stood in one swift motion, the sound of the chair scraping against the wooden floor echoing through the room as she shot Childe a blank look.

“I’m leaving.”

Before she could do as much as turn around his gloved hand already shot out to firmly grab hers, the leather hot against her skin and his grip firm and when her golden eyes flickered to meet his once more, she lowered her brows.

“Now, let’s not get hasty.” Childe told her with a cheerfulness that only served to fuel her annoyance and when his smile turned innocent in a way the gleam in his eyes betrayed, her frown deepened. “ After all, you wouldn’t want to go back on your word, would you?”

Lumine tensed at his words, the blonde inwardly cursing herself for agreeing to fight him in the first place and although she should have known that he would most likely try to use their little condition to his advantage, she would have never expected him to use it for something ridiculous like that.

Biting the inside of her cheek she held his gaze for a moment longer as she weighed her options. If she would refuse him there was no doubt that he wouldn’t stop bothering her until she would budge, and given that he was the Debt collector of the Fatui after all, she knew that it would only be a matter of time until he would come up with something new to settle the score- and there was no guarantee that she would like that option more than the current one.

So with a sigh, Lumine eventually moved to sit back down in her seat, the victorious smile that tugged his lips upwards earning him a frown from the blonde as he finally released her wrist.

“So let me get this straight.” Lumine started, the blonde moving to cross her arms above her chest as her golden eyes narrowed in suspicion. “You want me to pretend to be your girlfriend for three whole days for an undercover mission?”

“Exactly.” Childe flashed her a sharp grin as he leaned back in his seat once more, his gloved finger tapping softly against the edge of the table. “A reliable source informed me that there are some rumors going around about some underground organization. Apparently, they are taking advantage of the shift in Liyue’s leadership and are gaining rather influential members from all over Teyvat lately.”

Lumine arched a brow at that, the blonde mildly surprised to hear that. “So the Fatui is getting worried that they will pose a threat to the political influence they are currently holding over Liyue.”

Childe’s smile brightened at that, the ginger clearly pleased at how fast she was catching up.

“They certainly don’t appreciate it.” He confirmed, ocean orbs flashing as his lips curled upwards into a smug smile. “And that’s why I need you to help me find out just what exactly their little plan is so that we can ruin them.”

Lumine’s brows pinched together as she kept her eyes carefully trained on the Harbinger, lips thinned as she considered his words and as much as she disliked the idea of having to play along to his little game of undercover, she knew that the faster they would get the information he desired, the faster she would be able to get out of it.

“I don't like this.” She bluntly told him, causing Childe to let out a chuckle that sent a shiver down the length of her spine.

“Don't worry, girlie.” Childe drawled, ocean orbs shining in a way that was anything but reassuring before his smirk deepened. “I have a feeling that we will be quite enjoying ourselves.”

Lumine arched a brow at the Harbinger, golden eyes refusing to break his gaze with her own narrowed one and after a moment of silence passed, Lumine made what would turn out to be her third, and most fatal mistake.

“Alright, tell me what you have in mind.”

She should have known that this would be a bad idea.

After he had filled her in on what the plan for the following three days would be he had told her that he would pick her up the following day so that they could tail one of the prime suspects- a middle-aged couple from Sumeru who were staying in Liuli Hotel and according to Childe’s source, they would be the ones getting them closer to the others involved in the entire thing.

After Lumine had dropped Paimon off at Xiangling’s, the blonde made her way to meet up with the Harbinger to begin their mission and true to his words, by the time she reached Wangsheng Funeral Parlor he was already standing there, just waiting for her to finally join him.

The first thing that Lumine noticed was that his usual uniform had been discarded in favor of a plain crimson shirt and dark pants, his earring glistening in the bright light of the sun and when she closed in and his ocean orbs finally met hers, she saw his lips curl upwards into a grin that caused a smile to tug at her own in greeting.

“Good morning, partner.” Childe grinned in greeting as he pushed himself off the wall, and when he extended his arm to offer her his hand, his smile was warm. “Ready to have some fun?”

Lumine’s eyes briefly flickered to his hand, the absence of his gloves making her realize just how big they were and with a small, amused huff, she moved to slip her small hand into his big one.

“It's not like I have much of a choice, do I?”

The second her small hand slipped into his she could have sworn to have felt a spark of electricity run down the length of her spine, Childe’s grin widening at her words as he interlaced their hands and shot her a wink.

“Let’s go then, sweetheart.”

Lumine tried to ignore the way her chest fluttered at the sudden term of endearment when he suddenly pulled her into the crowded streets of Liyue Harbor, his grip on her hand firm as his ocean orbs fell back to the streets ahead once more to find their target.

Lumine couldn’t help but sneak a glance at the Harbinger next to her, the pace of his steps having slowed down ever so slightly to match them with hers as her golden eyes sparked with curiosity.

“If they are an underground organization, won’t they recognize you?” Lumine wondered as Childe let out a low hum, eyes not once leaving the crowd ahead as a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

“There is a reason as to why I have to wear a mask when I’m out collecting debts.” Childe reminded her, the ginger making sure to keep his voice low enough so that no one else would overhear before he moved to shoot her a small wink. “Lucky for us, we don’t look like your usual Liyuean people either so as long as we stick to our story, we should be fine.”

“I guess being an outlander does have its perks, then.” Lumine mused before her brows pinched together in confusion. “I still fail to see how you need my help in spying on them. Isn’t that your specialty?”

“We are not spying on them.” The ginger told her as he tightened his hold on her hand, and when he turned his head to catch her gaze with his once more, his smile widened into a smooth grin. “It’s called solidifying our cover. After all, it does have to be convincing for them to buy it, doesn’t it starlight?”

Lumine merely returned his grin with a sweet smile of her own as she dug her nails deeper into the back of his hand in warning, words dropping with sweet venom as she returned, “Of course, honey.”

Childe’s eyes sparked with humor, the ginger clearly amused by the entire situation before he broke their gaze to train his eyes on the people ahead of them once more.

As they made their way through the crowd he made sure to firmly keep her hand in his to not lose her in the crowd, Lumine trying to look for anyone dressed differently from the attire Liyue’s citizens usually wore but just when she was about to open her mouth to ask him what the couple looked like, he suddenly came to an abrupt halt.

Golden eyes widened in surprise as they snapped up to look at Childe, the blonde clearly caught off guard by the sudden change in route but when she already found him looking at her and caught sight of the wide smile on his lips, she tensed.

“How about we get ourselves something to eat?” He suddenly suggested, his voice cheerful and Lumine didn’t fail to miss the way his hand on hers tightened. “I heard their Dango is supposed to taste just as good as the ones in Inazuma.”

Lumine instantly caught on, the blonde guessing that their target had to be close but before she could even think about replying, he had already moved to drag her over to the shop to their right.

Golden eyes widened in surprise as they snapped up to shoot Childe a half-hearted glare, the smile on her lips tight as she dug her fingers into his.

“A small warning would have been nice.” Lumine bit out through her smile as Childe let out a low hum, the ginger handing the vendor a handful of bills before he moved a step closer, azure eyes suddenly fixing on a spot behind her as the musky scent of his cologne washed over her senses.

“You can thank me later, lyubimaya.” The Harbinger smoothly returned before he accepted the sweets from the vendor and moved to pull her towards one of the tables at the terrace next to the shop, Lumine being left with nothing to do but to follow and when they reached the small table close to the street he finally released her hand so she could slide into the seat opposite of him.

The blonde couldn’t help but notice the lack of warmth the second he let go of her, and when he leaned forward to rest his elbow on the table, his smile was firmly set in place.

“Three o’clock.” He softly hummed, causing Lumine’s gaze to instantly drift to her left and the second her golden eyes fell on a middle-aged couple seated at the table close to theirs, she instantly realized that they were their targets.

If she wouldn’t know better she would have believed them to be your ordinary couple, the attire they were wearing not drawing too much attention to them and yet, Lumine instantly noticed the way the man’s shoulders were slightly tense as if he was on alert, his wife smiling as she continued to chat with him and Lumine guessed that if they wanted to find out more, it would easier to get it from the woman than her husband.

Lumine stiffened when she suddenly felt someone grab her chin, golden eyes snapping back to the ginger seated opposite of her and when she found the tip of the Dango inches away from her lips, her eyes widened in surprise.

What the hell?

“What do you think you’re doing, Ajax?” Lumine asked through a tight-lipped smile, the dangerous spark brightening her eyes not going unnoticed by the Harbinger seated in front of her.

Childe’s lips curled upwards into a fox-like grin at the way her eyes flashed with surprise as he tipped his head aside, azure orbs gleaming with mischief in the bright rays of the sun.

“Feeding my girlfriend like the good boyfriend I am.” The ginger told her, voice laced with honey as his eyes crinkled. “Now, be a good girl and say ahh-”

Childe’s voice broke at the end and dared to turn into a pained yell when he suddenly felt her sharply ram her heel into his foot, the Harbinger swiftly biting his tongue as his smile turned pained, Lumine’s own turning innocent before she leaned forwards to take a bite off the sweet treat.

“Thanks, darling.” The sweet chime of her voice sounded as she moved to rest her cheek on the palm of her hand, golden eyes sparkling in mischief as she reached her other hand out to softly pat the back of his hand. “You’re as attentive as ever.”

Before she could move her hand away however Childe swiftly turned his around to interlace his fingers with hers, the sudden movement making her chest flutter and when sparkling azure caught shining golden again, his smile turned smug.

“When it comes to you, always lyubimaya.”

Lumine felt a shiver dance over her skin as she held his gaze with her own for a moment longer, the way his eyes shone in the warm rays of the sun making him suddenly seem calmer and more relaxed than usual but before she could part her lips to shoot back, the sound of laughter carried to their ears which was followed by a couple passing their table.

Golden eyes instantly snapped away from his to settle on the retreating backs of the couple that were headed for the jewelry shop at the other side of the street but before she could even think about telling Childe, he had already moved from his seat, his hand firmly holding hers as he pulled her back to her feet once more with a strength that nearly made her stumble right against his chest.

“Now, darling, I think it’s time to enrich your jewelry collection.”

Lumine huffed in amusement when he moved her hand to place it on the crook of his arm, the boyish upwards tilt of his lips making her roll her eyes before they moved to follow the two of them towards the shop across the streets.

When they finally reached the stand the young couple was already there, the dark-haired woman eagerly looking through the different kinds of accessory they were offering while the man was merely watching, clearly not worried about the concerning amount of shining jewelry his wife was eyeing rather hungrily.

“Ah, welcome!” The young vendor greeted the approaching couple, Lumine’s lips instantly lifting into a polite smile when they came to a stop in front of the vitrine. “How may I help you?”

“We were looking for some jewelry.” Childe returned with a smile before he suddenly moved to wrap an arm around her waist, causing Lumine to tense in surprise as his eyes crinkled. “We are on vacation in Liyue and heard that you sell some beautiful pieces, so we decided to have a look and see for ourselves.”

The vendor’s hazel eyes brightened as she clapped her hand together in delight. “Oh! Honeymoon?”

Lumine nearly choked as Childe’s grin widened, his hand on her waist moving to pull her tighter against him as his eyes brightened in amusement.

“Not yet, but hopefully soon.”  Childe smoothly returned, the charming smile on his lips making Lumine marvel at how convincingly he managed to stay in character before his gaze flickered to Lumine to shoot her a wink. “So if you should have a pretty ring, I’ll gladly have a look at it.”

Lumine forced the smile to stay on her lips as the sound of the vendor's chuckle reached her ears before the young woman’s knowing gaze fell on Lumine.

“I’m sure that there will be one that will match this young Lady’s radiant beauty.” The young woman cheerfully assured him. “Why don’t I show you some of them while your girlfriend has a look at the jewelry?”

Lumine offered the woman a beaming smile in return as Childe instantly took up on the offer.

“Gladly.” The ginger said before he turned to look down at the petite blonde in his arms with a grin. “I’ll be right back.”

“Sure.” Lumine sweetly returned, noticing the way his touch lingered on her waist for just the split of a second too long before he finally moved to follow the woman inside the shop, leaving the blonde alone with the couple.

Lumine allowed her eyes to take in the sight of the beautiful jewelry, the way the gems reflected the sun only serving to enhance their beauties and although her gaze was fixed on the accessories, her attention was on the couple next to her.

“What about this one?” The woman chirped as she presented her husband the necklace with a beaming smile, just for it to dim when his expression didn’t change.

“I don’t see a difference to the one before that.”

The woman seemed visibly put off by that, expression falling in disappointment but Lumine instantly saw the opportunity and took it.

“Oh, what a beautiful necklace!” The blonde breathed as her golden eyes widened, the sudden exclamation earning her the attention from the woman who turned to look at her in surprise. “The gem really compliments your eyes.”

The woman visibly perked up at that, her eyes brightening at the compliment as she lifted her hand to caress the emerald stone hanging from the golden chain around her neck.

“Thank you! It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” The woman gushed and Lumine instantly nodded in agreement, making sure to keep the smile firm on her lips as the brunette continued. “I’ve been looking for a necklace for ages, and when I heard about Liyue’s famed jewelry, I just had to see it for myself!”

“It’s beautiful.” Lumine admitted, and it was the truth- the necklace rested beautifully around her slender neck. “I take that you’re not from Liyue, then?”

“Oh, no!” The woman chuckled as she waved her hand. “We just came here to meet up with some acquaintances, we are from Sumeru, actually!”

Bingo.

Lumine feigned surprise, golden eyes widening in mock amazement. “Sumeru? What a coincidence, we have just spent a week there on our way to Liyue!”

The woman’s expression brightened in excitement as her husband pinched his brows together, the tension in his shoulders clearly telling her that he was wary of her.

“You’re not from here then, I take?” He asked, his voice surprisingly deep as Lumine shook her head with a polite smile.

“We’re from Snezhnaya, actually.” Lumine brightly returned, her keen eyes noting how the tension in his shoulders faded ever so slightly. “We traveled to Liyue to go on vacation and enjoy its beautiful scenery- it’s definitely a nice change to all the snow.”

The woman instantly nodded in agreement before she shot Lumine a giddy smile. “Definitely! Since you seem to have an eye for jewelry, how about you help me pick out a matching bracelet for the necklace?”

Lumine instantly agreed, the blonde spending the following minutes in which she waited for Childe admiring all kinds of different necklaces and bracelets and it was when a necklace caught her eye that she reached out to gently brush her fingers over the beautiful accessory.

It was a thin silver chain with a small ruby hanging from its center, the way it shone in the light of the sun mesmerizing and Lumine had to admit that out of all, it was the most beautiful.

Just when she noticed that it reminded her of a certain ginger’s earring did she suddenly feel a pair of hands on her waist that instantly made her tense in alarm, but the second she felt a chin rest on the crown of her head, she relaxed.

“You’re back.” The soft chime of her voice greeted and Childe hummed lowly, azure eyes resting on the necklace as her fingers fell from the ruby before she turned her head to look at him with an arched brow. “You were gone for quite some time.”

“Missed me?” Childe drawled, the roll of her eyes making the vendor chuckle softly in amusement at the sight before Childe moved to stand next to Lumine once more, arm snugly wrapped around her middle in a way that was beginning to feel strangely natural but before Lumine could reply, the woman next to them beat it to her.

“Oh, you must be the boyfriend, then!” The woman gushed as she offered Childe a bright smile. “My, you two really do complement one another!”

The sound of Childe’s soft chuckle warmed the blood in her veins, the way his grip on her waist tightened instantly making her squeeze his upper arm in return in a silent reassurance that she would explain it to him later.

“Thank you.” Childe smoothly returned before he tipped his head aside, the smile on his lips turning sharp. “I’m a lucky man to have someone like her by my side.”

Lumine glanced up to see that his expression remained the same as before, no sign of deceit in his eyes and as much as she knew that Childe was well trained in the art of keeping his mask firmly in place, she was surprised to find that he seemed to be more at ease than she had expected him to be.

“Ah, young love.” The woman clapped her hands together with a smile. “Since you are going to stay here for some longer, you’re probably staying at a Hotel nearby, right?”

This time, Lumine spoke. “Ah yes, we are staying at Liuli Hotel, it’s not too far from here actually!”

At that, the woman sharply inhaled, Lumine not missing the way her husband suddenly seemed slightly more interested in their conversation.

“Oh really? So are we!” She exclaimed as she moved to hook her arm with her husband’s. “How nice, I’m sure we will see each other around more often then!”

“Definitely.” Childe amiably returned before his gaze flickered to Lumine for the split of a second. “Well, we wouldn’t want to keep you then. It was nice meeting you, and hopefully we will see each other around more often!”

The woman eagerly nodded, clearly not opposed by the idea while her husband seemed uncaring of whether they would run into one another again, and after the couples bid each other goodbye, the two moved to make their way to the Hotel they were staying at where she could fill him in on what she managed to find out.

Liuli Hotel was located right in the heart of Liyue Harbor, the building one Childe was seemingly familiar with and when they passed the guard that were standing in front of the doors, Childe offered him a curt in greeting as Lumine flashed him a polite smile before they made their way inside.

She could instantly tell that this was a place not many would be able to afford, the big entrance hall adorned with expensive paintings and although she heard that not just anyone was able to reserve a room there, it seemed like with Childe’s connections it turned out to be easier than expected.

Lumine marveled at the chandelier that was hanging from the ceiling, its warm light illuminating the corridor and giving the place an inviting glow as they made their way to the young male standing behind the reception desk.

It seemed like Childe had already made sure to arrange their accommodation beforehand, the receptionist merely handing him the key to what she assumed to lead to their room and offering the young male an amiable smile as she passed him, she moved to follow Childe upstairs.

Lumine softly sighed to herself as she followed the ginger, the blonde wanting nothing more than to just inform him about all that happened before taking some rest but the second they reached the room and she stepped inside, she came to a screeching halt.

He couldn’t be serious.

“Childe?” Lumine sweetly called as her brow twitched in annoyance, and when her golden eyes flickered to catch his, she shot him a strained smile. “Where is the second bed?”

His innocent smile was all it took for her to know that it was not a misunderstanding and instead, very well intended and although the bed did seem to be big enough to accommodate them both, there was no way she would sleep in a bed with him.

“Well, since we need to keep up appearances, I figured that it would be best to choose a room with only one.” He told her, ocean orbs flashing with a gleam that betrayed the innocent smile on his lips as he moved to sit down on the foot of the bed. “It’s big enough for the both of us and if you’re scared of falling out, I’ll make sure to hold you close.”

Childe heaved a disappointed sigh from where he found himself laying on the bed not even twenty minutes later, the amount of pillows that formed a wall between them making his lips press together into a pout.

“Is that really necessary?” Childe whined as Lumine moved to put the last pillow in place, the blonde patting it gently before she shot him a half-hearted glare from over the wall she had created.

“Move as much as an inch over this wall and I won’t hesitate to kick you off the bed.” Lumine warned him, earning her an exaggerated sigh from the Harbinger who moved to place his arm under his head from where he was laying on his back

He should have known better than to push his luck, but he guessed that he should consider himself lucky to be able to sleep on the bed in the first place.

Lumine had just filled him in on what she had managed to find out, the ginger not the least disappointed to hear that she already managed to gain some intel and after a moment of consideration on what would be best to do next, his eyes flickered to the pillow-wall separating them.

“Since it’s safe to assume that by acquaintances they mean the people we are looking for, it’s likely that they received a formal invitation.” Childe mused as his brows pinched together in thought. “Now, all that’s left for us to do is to find out in which room they are staying in so that we can look for it.”

He heard her shift on the other side of the bed, her sweet scent sticking to the pillows and clouding his senses.

“Sounds easy enough.” Lumine mumbled, the sleep that laced her voice telling him that she was more exhausted than she had formerly let on. “We just have to make sure to choose a time in which they are out.”

Childe hummed in agreement. “Since we are staying at the same Hotel, this shouldn’t be too hard.” His lips then quirked upwards into a smug smile. “Then again, I doubt that there is anything that we won’t be able to master given how smoothly today went.”

The ginger waited for her to return his remark with a snarky comment, the silence that followed his words making his brows lower and after a few moments passed, he silently moved to his feet.

The second he reached her side and caught sight of her small form curled up on the bed his expression softened, the Harbinger reaching out to gently place the covers over her and once he did, he found his hands lingering on them for a few more moments as he allowed himself to drink in the sight of her.

She looked beautiful with her golden locks sprawled over the dark sheets, the way her plump lips were slightly parted and her chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm making warmth spread in his chest.

“I knew you would be the right choice.” Childe mumbled as he moved to brush a strand of her hair out of her face and behind her ear, expression softening at the sight of her serene expression.

There was something about her that drew him to her, that made it nearly impossible to resist and although Childe had never shied away from making his interest in the Traveler known, today had just proven how deep his interest ran when it came to her.

With a soft sigh to himself the ginger moved to lay back on his side of the bed once more, sleep refusing to claim him for the following hours to come as the soft sound of her breaths lent him company through the night.

Lumine woke to the sun gently caressing her sleeping face, its warmth lulling her back to consciousness.

The first thing she noticed was the warmth that engulfed her body, the sheets brushing softly against her body as a familiar smell clouded her senses.

The blonde buried her face deeper into the pillow, intending to catch some more minutes of well-needed sleep but upon finding that her pillow was unusually firm, she frowned lightly.

She slightly shifted in hopes of getting more comfortable, moving closer to the warmth next to her but when she felt a firm weight on her waist suddenly tighten, she froze, heart stilling in her chest.

For a moment she didn’t dare breathe, all sleep that previously clouded her still hazy mind fading from her senses, and when she finally mustered up the courage to lift her heavy lids, she felt the blood in her veins freeze at the sight that greeted her.

Lumine found herself staring into the sleeping face of a rather familiar Harbinger, ginger strands glowing in the bright rays of the morning sun in a way that made Lumine’s heart still and it was then that Lumine realized that the weight around her waist was his muscular arm that was possessively wrapped around her slim waist, holding her close against his body.

Oh dearest Tsaritsa-

Lumine felt the pace of her heartbeat quicken at the realization of what happened, unable to believe how she managed to end up in his arms out of all places over night as she cursed the pillow-barrier for giving in so easily.

Lumine was too caught up in her thoughts to notice the man next to her tense and when she felt his grip on her waist tighten all of sudden, she couldn’t help but stiffen in alarm.

Golden orbs widened in surprise as they snapped up just to find a pair of hazy azure stare right back at her, heart dropping at the way his brows pinched together in what seemed to be confusion and once he seemed to realize that he wasn't asleep and in fact awake, his lips spread into a lazy smile.

“You know, I’m beginning to enjoy this more and more.” Childe mumbled, voice thick with sleep as he allowed himself to drink in the way her cheeks were covered in a beautiful rosy hue. “Good morning to you too, lyubimaya.”

That was all she needed to snap out of her daze, the blonde shooting him a frown as she pushed against his shoulder to loosen his arms but he refused to let go, the teasing glint that brightened his dark eyes making her chest flutter as he kept her locked against him.

“If I recall correctly, I should be the one kicking you off the bed right now.” Childe mused, the low timbre of his sleepy voice making the blood in her veins run hot as he tightened his arms around her. “Not only did you invade your enemy’s space, but you also took advantage of him while he was asleep.”

He then moved to bring his face closer to hers, the sudden close proximity making her tense in his hold and when she felt the bangs of his ginger hair brush against her forehead and his smile turned foxy, she didn’t dare breathe.

“Don’t you know that you should never underestimate your enemy, dear?”

The sound of her heartbeat quickening echoed in her ears as Lumine kept her eyes locked with his, the blonde finding herself unable to break his gaze and it was only when she felt his grip around her waist tighten that she lowered her brows.

It was when her lips suddenly lifted into a smile that he stiffened, the sweetness of it betraying the gleam that shone in her beautiful eyes and when she suddenly brought her face closer to his, he could feel her hot breath mingle with his as she gazed up at him through her dark lashes.

“Of course not, darling.”

The second the last word passed her lips he already found himself flying off the bed, the gust of anemo she had released nearly knocking all air out of his lungs as he hit the ground with a groan, Lumine slipping out of the bed to stand by his fallen body with a victorious smile.

“I’ll go get ready, then.”

After they had gotten ready the two of them didn’t waste any time and moved downstairs to the reception to get the keys from the reception.

It turned out to be easier than expected, Lumine claiming that she had troubles with the water in the bathroom that Childe had tampered with the aid of his vision a few moments earlier while said ginger swiftly scanned the guest list, and upon finding the familiar names, he swiftly grabbed the keys before waiting for Lumine to meet him at the designated location.

Since the room they had booked was located on the floor above theirs which was strictly reserved for the VIPS they needed to be slightly more careful to not get caught by any of the staff.

Once he had ensured that the hallway was clear Lumine swiftly unlocked the door, the sound of the door clicking open making her heave a small sigh of relief before she made her way inside, Childe telling her that he would guard the room from the outside while she would look for the invite.

Lumine offered him a swift nod as her eyes swept over the luxurious room in search of anything that may seem to be of any use to them or give them a lead towards what they were looking for, the blonde swiftly moving to rummage through the desk and the drawers.

“Found anything?” She heard Childe’s low mumble come from the hallway as her hands swiftly went through the wardrobe, her eyes narrowed in concern as she thinned her lips.

“Nothing yet.” Lumine sighed in return, golden eyes scanning the rest of the wardrobe for any hidden placed and it was only when her hands brushed against the inside pocket of a coat that she suddenly paused, blonde brows narrowing before she slipped her hand into it just to feel an envelope brush against her hand that had her lips lift into a victorious smile.

Bingo.

“I think I got it.” Lumine exclaimed as she moved to take out the envelope, the blonde rushing to close the doors of the wardrobe once more and just when she was about to leave the room, she suddenly saw Childe tense in alarm.

“Damn it.” The ginger suddenly muttered under his breath before he swiftly moved to grab her wrist, azure eyes narrowed as he looked at her. “Someone’s coming, we need to go.”

Lumine swiftly moved to close the door of the room behind her before she followed Childe as he dragged her down the hallway into the opposite direction from where the voices came from, the ginger’s hold on her hand not once loosening as Lumine tightly held onto the envelope.

Childe swiftly turned into a corner, the ginger cursing under his breath when they were greeted by the sight of a dead-end and when Lumine heard the voices grow louder, she knew that they were close.

“What now?” Lumine whispered as her concerned eyes caught his narrowed ones, the ginger clearly considering their options.

It was too late to turn back around now, the staff most likely catching sight of them if they were to turn to the left now and when his gaze locked with hers once more, his lips thinned.

Which left them with only one option.

Lumine’s eyes widened in surprise when he suddenly moved, her back hitting the cool wall in one swift motion and when her golden orbs snapped up in surprise to look at Childe whose face was suddenly painfully close to hers, she tensed.

“Childe?” She called his name in confusion, voice barely above a whisper but when he suddenly moved to rest a calloused hand against her cheek, his expression turned serious.

“I’m sorry.” He mumbled, breath mingling with hers before his fingers suddenly moved to grab her chin to sharply tilt it upward, bringing her face just inches away from his. “Just follow my lead.”

And with that, he leaned down to crash his lips against hers.

Lumine’s eyes widened in a mixture of shock and surprise the second he kissed her, fingers digging into the front of his shirt as the blood in her veins froze and her mind blanked- the blonde unable to believe what was happening.

He was kissing her- Childe, the Eleventh Harbinger was kissing her.

The feeling of his body pressed against hers made her pulse quicken, the adrenaline that rushed through her veins warming the blood in her veins as she felt his free hand rest on her waist to keep her close and Lumine felt something in her stomach flutter.

His kiss was gentle-almost cautious at first yet with a hint of urgency that reminded her just where they were, the envelope pressed between them from where she had slipped it into the front of her dress.

Childe suddenly slid his hand to the back of her neck, his big hand fitting perfectly around it and when she felt him tilt it up ever so slightly, she felt a wave of heat hit her with full force.

“Relax.” She heard him mumble against the kiss, voice husky as the hand on her waist gave her a reassuring squeeze.

It was the final urge she needed to finally yield, the blonde pushing all of the voices in the back of her mind that screamed at her that this was wrong aside as she allowed her eyes to flutter close and kissed him back, body melting against his as she gave in.

The second he felt her small hands slide up his chest to lock around his neck Childe’s kiss turned more passionate in a way that nearly robbed her breath, her legs feeling weak beneath her body and if it weren’t for him holding her she was sure they would have long given in beneath the intensity of his kiss.

She felt hot and cold both at once, the knowledge that he was doing this because of their mission fading beneath the pleasure his touch brought, the warmth his kiss sparked in her chest and as the sound of approaching footsteps grew closer, Lumine felt her pulse spike in alarm.

As if sensing her worry Childe urged her head back to get better access and deepen the kiss, the sweet taste of her warm lips against his intoxicating and when he felt her relax under his kiss once more, he hummed in satisfaction.

She felt perfect against him, the way she instantly understood his plan and played along making his chest swell in pride and just when the footsteps reached him, he moved aside so that his bigger body was covering Lumine’s from sight.

The second the Hotel staff spotted them he cracked an eye open to catch the wide-eyed girls that had stumbled across them, the surprise that flashed on their faces making him smile against Lumine’s lips before they cleared their throat to catch their attention.

“Excuse me?” One of the women finally called, her embarrassment seeping into her voice and Childe used that moment to break away from Lumine, the ginger feigning surprise as he moved his hand from her waist to wrap his arm protectively around her waist and pull the blonde against his chest. “The fifth floor is strictly for its residents.”

Lumine struggled to catch her breath as her heart wildly slammed against her chest, the blonde instantly playing along and burying her face into Childe’s hard chest to hide her face in feigned embarrassment as the ginger’s eyes widened in mock shock.

“Fifth floor?” Childe echoed in surprise before he allowed his eyes to scan their surroundings as if he just now realized where they were before he shot them a wide, sheepish grin. “Ah, it seems like we were too distracted to notice that we missed our stop- we apologize for the mix-up.”

Fortunately for them his excuse seemed to work, the heat that rushed to the other woman’s face at the implication nearly making Lumine groan from where she was peeking at them out of the corner of her eyes as she hastily nodded.

“It’s fine.” She assured them a tad bit too hastily. “I would appreciate it if you would, uh, resume your activities in one of the lower floors if possible.”

“Of course.” Childe instantly assured her, eyes crinkling as his gaze flickered to the blonde in his arms, the sight of her slightly dazed expression as she caught his gaze with hers making his expression soften ever so slightly. “Let’s go, starlight.”

Lumine didn’t protest when he gently urged her forward, the blonde shooting the two staff members a sheepish smile and a polite nod as they passed them in parting as they made their way towards the stairs once more.

The way back to the elevator was quiet, Lumine trying her best to ignore the way his hand on her hip burned her skin and it was only when the doors to the elevator closed that she heard him heave a soft sigh.

The blonde tensed when his hands moved to grab her face, her eyes shooting up to catch his light frown that tugged on his face and when she saw the concern in his eyes, she felt her chest tighten.

“You alright?” He asked, the seriousness that laced his voice catching her by surprise and doing little to calm the erratic beating of her heart before she offered him a small smile.

“I’m fine.” She swiftly assured him, mentally smacking herself for the way her voice came out slightly more breathy than it should. “That was pretty quick thinking on your part.”

Once Childe was convinced that she was telling the truth he let go of her face, his lips lifting into a foxy smile. “It wouldn’t have worked if I didn’t have the perfect partner by my side- I have to say that you were quite convincing, dear .”

Lumine didn’t hesitate to slap the back of his head, the hiss she earned from Childe in return making her cross her arms above her chest before she arched a brow.

“It’s not like you gave me much of a choice.” Lumine reminded him and Childe’s expression turned smug at that. “So don’t flatter yourself.”

Childe let out a low hum as he tilted his head aside, the ginger not even bothering to hide the mischievous gleam his eyes held.

“You know, I am beginning to enjoy this more and more.” He told her with a chuckle, the sound making her lips tingle in remembrance as he moved to sling an arm around her shoulders before he leaned forward to bring their faces closer. “I wonder if you will still react the same even if I do give you a choice next time.” His smile then turned smug. “Because I have a feeling that I already know the answer.”

Lumine’s eyes widened in disbelief as the soft chime of the elevator doors opening suddenly sounded, the ginger shooting her a wink before he stepped out of it, leaving Lumine to stand there and watch his retreating form with her mouth agape in disbelief.

That sneaky little-

A groan passed her lips as she quickly moved to follow him, the blonde lifting a hand over her chest to get her treacherous heart to calm down.

It was just for show, Lumine. Don’t think too much into it.

She shouldn’t have enjoyed it as much as she did, shouldn’t have gotten carried away as much as she did and yet, no matter how many times she told that to herself, her heartbeat refused to slow down, the feeling of his lips against hers haunting her for the following hours to come.

After they had reached their room once more they instantly checked the contents of the letter and much to their relief, it turned out that their suspicions had been right, the paper posing an invite to a gathering that would take place that night at the Pearl galley.

It left them with just enough time to prepare for the event, Childe offering to go and check out the security beforehand so that they could get a first idea of what would expect them while Lumine would get ready.

The blonde instantly agreed, inwardly relieved to have some time to clear her head of all the messy thoughts filling them and when she made her way upstairs and back to her room once more after parting from her partner, she heaved a soft sigh to herself.

He told her that he had already organized some clothes with them, the blonde marveling at the speed of the Fatui but the second she entered the room and her eyes caught sight of the clothes laying on their bed, she felt her heart skip a beat.

Resting innocently on her bed was a beautiful black, off-shoulder dress, the silken material soft under her touch as she ran her hand over the expensive material and Lumine didn’t dare imagine how much he must have paid for it.

It was only when she was about to take hold of it that her golden eyes suddenly caught sight of a small, blue box resting on top of the neatly folded dress, causing her eyes to flash in surprise and when she reached out to open it, her heart dropped in surprise as her eyes widened in disbelief.

Impossible.

Staring back at her was a rather familiar necklace, the thin silver chain glistening in the dim light that filled the room as the ruby glowed warmly and the second her disbelief wore off, her pulse quickened at the realization that it was the very same necklace she had seen at the jewelry the other day.

He must have seen her look at it, Lumine feeling her stomach flutter at the realization that he must have gone back just to get it for her and when azure eyes flashed in her mind, she felt her chest hum in that familiar way that it seemed to only do when she was with him.

“Idiot.” Lumine mumbled as she gently ran her finger over the ruby, expression softening affectionately as her lips lifted into a warm smile.

She couldn’t believe he had just spent a fortune to get it for her, his attentiveness only serving to fuel the voices in her mind that she had attempted to push back for the past few weeks when his earlier words suddenly echoed in her mind.

“I wonder if you will still react the same even if I do give you a choice next time.”

Lumine felt the blood in her veins freeze as his voice sounded in her ears, her stomach dropping as the memory of his kiss ghosted over her lips and when Lumine lifted a hand over her chest to feel the erratic beating of her heart, she found that maybe he was right after all.

He was a Harbinger, her supposed enemy, and the lines between their duty and her feelings were starting to blur to the point she found it hard to go back.

By the time the sun set Childe was already waiting at the bottom of the stairs in the reception hall, the ginger dressed in a navy-colored shirt and dark pants, his ginger hair slicked back with his gloved hands stuffed into the pockets of his dark coat.

He had returned a few minutes ago, just in time for when they were supposed to meet and after getting a first impression of the security on the Pearl, he noted that getting in would be the easy part- should there be any complications like their cover getting blown, however, getting out would be more tricky.

Childe absentmindedly wondered whether Lumine had already discovered her gift, the Harbinger smiling slightly to himself as he wondered how it would look on her but it seemed like he wouldn’t have to wonder for much longer, because not even a moment later the sound of heels clicking against the stairs caught his attention.

Childe instantly straightened, his eyes instantly snapping up to greet her but the second his eyes fell on her, he felt his heart still in his chest at the sight that greeted him.

Descending the stairs and looking absolutely stunning was no other than his beautiful partner, and although Childe had known that she had already looked beautiful before, right now she looked absolutely breathtaking.

The black dress fit her skin perfectly and enhanced her beautiful curves, the black material reaching her knees and thinning at the top before it stretched over her shoulders to reveal her beautiful neckline, the ruby gem that adorned her neck matching the earring that hung from his ear.

The black heels added to her petite height and enhanced her slender legs even more, the smile on her lips making her golden eyes shine in the dim light of the reception hall and just when she was about to reach the last stair he managed to snap out of his thoughts.

The ginger stepped forward to extend his gloved hand for her to take, lips curving up into a genuine smile and when she slipped her hand into his, he firmly held onto it.

“You look beautiful.” He mumbled, the sincerity that laced his low voice making her heart skip a beat and her smile widen into a grin.

“Thank you, you look quite handsome yourself.” She returned, earning her a smug look from Childe who gently pulled her down the last step and moved to place her hand into the crook of his arm, the feeling of his hand over hers one she was beginning to feel more than natural to her. “Ready, darling?”

Childe flashed her a sharp grin in return as he gave her hand a soft squeeze. “With you by my side, always, lyubimaya.”

Lumine huffed in amusement before they made their way out of the Hotel and towards the Harbor, the blonde finding that maybe this mission wasn’t too bad after all.

By the time they arrived the ship was already buzzing with people, the orange lights and sound of laughter reaching all the way outside and when it was their turn to pass the security Lumine merely handed the guard the invite, the elderly male swiftly skimming the letter before handing it back to her and giving them a brief nod before allowing them to enter.

It didn’t take them long to find their way below deck, the smell of cigarette smoke and sound of laughter filling the hallways as they made their way towards the cabin in the far back and once they were let inside by another guard, Lumine wasn’t surprised at the sight that greeted her.

The sound of the music was drowned out by the laughter and buzzing conversations that filled the dimly lit hall, the people filling it only the most elite as some danced while others conversed quietly with themselves, the bar in the far back accommodating some of the women as the lounge next to it was filled with men who busied themselves with gambling and drowning the liquor filling their glasses, the women hanging at their arms whispering to them and making sure to keep their glasses full.

Lumine could only think about how much cleaning up Ningguang would have to do if she were to find out about this, Childe’s informant having seemingly been right about there being an underground organization only the most influential had access to and when she suddenly felt Childe lean down to place his lips to her ear, she tensed.

“I’ll take the lounge, you the bar.” He mumbled, the way his hand moved to rest on her back making her skin tingle as his hot breath fanned against the shell of her ear. “If you run into any trouble, I’ll be right there.”

Lumine felt a shiver run over her exposed skin as she nodded, his hand giving her waist one last squeeze before she slipped out of his hold and made her way to approach the crowded bar.

The blonde made her way through the dancing people before she slipped into the empty seat at the bar, rosy lips lifting into an amiable smile as the elderly barkeeper came over and took her order.

Lumine heaved a soft sigh to herself as she crossed her legs over one another, her attention fixed on the conversation between the women next to her as she waited for her drink.

At first there was nothing noteworthy, the blonde flashing the bartender a small smile when he brought her the drink and just when she wondered if maybe she should move around and see if she would overhear something, a voice behind her suddenly spoke.

“Oh my, what a beautiful necklace you have!”

Lumine tensed in surprise when she suddenly found a blonde woman standing next to her, blue eyes brightening as she admired the ruby hanging from her neck, her accent instantly giving away that she was from Mondstadt and Lumine’s fingers instantly lifted to caress the stone warming her neck, lips lifting into a polite smile as she realized that she had suddenly become the center of attention from the group.

“Ah, thank you.” Lumine returned, a sheepish smile on her lips as she instantly slipped into character. “It was a gift from my partner.”

“It must have cost a fortune.” Another one chimed in, this one seeming to be in her early fifties as she shot Lumine an impressed smirk. “You really are lucky to have such an adoring suitor.”

Lumine’s smile softened at that, the image of the Harbinger flashing in her mind. “I am indeed.”

The blonde woman grinned as she moved to slide into the seat next to her, the navy-colored dress she was wearing most likely costing just as much as the ruby alone as she crossed her leg over the other.

“How rude of me! My name is Lara, by the way.” She told her before extending her hand, Lumine instantly moving to accept it with her own. “I can’t remember having seen you around before. I assume that you are new?”

“My name is Lumine.” Lumine smoothly returned, the smile on her lips not giving anything away. “It's the first time we got invited, but I have to say that the reception alone is already making me feel more than welcomed.”

The sweet chime of Lara’s laughter carried to her ears as she moved out to rest a hand on Lumine’s shoulder, blue eyes sparkling curiously as she tilted her head aside.

“Since Lu feng invited you, I can guarantee that we will get along perfectly fine!” The blonde chirped, cand Lumine made sure to remember the name to tell Childe later. “I take that your company is somewhere around here as well?”

“He should be at the lounge with the others.” Lumine returned and the brunette whose name she had yet to find out about heaved a tired sigh.

“They are probably talking about the investment project for Liyue again.” She muttered before she took a sip of her drink. “Boring business.”

Lumine’s eyes sparked in curiosity at that. “Investment?”

Lara nodded as she swirled her drink in her glass. “The investment for Liyue. Since the Fatui’s influence in Liyue is starting to grow, the organization plans on investing into the city and its safety so that their influence over it will be bigger than theirs and the Qixing combined, so it will only be a matter of time until things in Liyue change- the Qixing’s time of leadership will soon be over.”

Lumine tried to fight back the frown that tugged at her lips, the blonde humming in thought before Lara shot her a grin.

“But that’s just boring business talk- tell me, where did you get that dress from? It looks gorgeous!”

For the following hour the women kept her entertained, the blonde managing to pick up a couple of more names she would make sure to keep in her mind and Lumine figured that this was a situation that not only concerned the Fatui but now also the Liyue Qixing as a whole.

Just as she found herself wondering when she would be able to escape them she suddenly felt a warmth press against her back that made her stiffen, the familiar arm that wrapped around her waist instantly making her relax as a familiar scent clouded her senses.

“Enjoying yourself, starlight?

The feeling of his warm hand resting on her thigh made her skin tingle as her rosy lips curled upwards into a sweet smile when she felt him slide into the seat behind her, golden eyes shining in the dim light that filled the room as she turned her head around and caught ocean blue eyes that were already looking at her with hers.

“You’re back!” Lumine greeted, as she leaned back against him, the way his hold on her tightened making her chest flutter as she moved to rest her hand over his gloved one. “Is anything the matter?”

Childe’s eyes twinkled as the sound of his smooth chuckle vibrated through his chest as his lips curled upwards into a smug smirk.

“Do I need to have a reason to seek out my girlfriend other than that I miss her?”

That smooth bastard.

The sound of the women gushing ripped her out of her musings as Lara suddenly tugged at her arm with a giddy smile, eyes shining at the sight of the handsome Harbinger.

“Is that your boyfriend?” Lara inquired, the curiosity in her eyes clearly visible and when Lumine nodded, her smile turned into a grin. “You’re so lucky Lumine, you really bagged yourself a handsome one!”

Lumine’s smile turned strained as she bit back the sigh, the blonde knowing well enough that Childe’s ego would be stroked that night as the ginger flashed them a charming smile.

“On the contrary, I think that I was the lucky one with her.” Childe smoothly returned, the squeals and dreamy sighs from the others nearly making Lumine grimace when Childe shot her a wink. “Right, lyubimaya ?”

Lumine could only nod before Lara already jumped upon hearing the term of endearment.

“Oh, you’re from Snezhanya?” The blonde inquired, her curiosity piqued as she looked at Lumine. “How did you two meet?”

Lumine stiffened at that as she glanced at Childe who seemed not to the least bit concerned and answered.

“I saw her pass me by on my way to work and she instantly caught my attention, so I couldn’t help but follow her.” He started, and Lumine’s eyes flashed in surprise at the honesty that laced his voice, the blonde not having known that he had already seen her before learning of her identity. “It turned out that it was a good thing because not too much later I found her getting bothered by a group of men, so I decided to jump in and lend her a hand.”

Lumine huffed in amusement at that. “Quite literally at that. I surely didn’t expect it, but if it weren’t for him, I would have really gotten in trouble.”

Childe’s eyes brightened before he tipped his head aside, the ginger drinking in the sight of how her smile softened at the memory.

Lara clapped her hands together at that, eyes sparkling as she turned to look at Lumine.

“That’s so romantic!” She exclaimed and Lumine fought back the snort at that. “So that’s the moment you fell for each other?”

Lumine stiffened at that, the blonde prepared to simply smile and nod it off but when she suddenly heard Childe speak, she froze.

“I fell for her during our first fight.”

Lumine felt her heart come to an abrupt halt the second the words reached her ears, golden eyes snapping up to look at him in surprise to catch sight of his expression but when she found that he was eerily serious, she felt the blood in her veins freeze in disbelief as her golden eyes widened for the split of a second.

No way.

Childe merely tightened his arm around her before his gaze flickered to meet hers, the sudden intensity it held causing her pulse to suddenly quicken once more before he continued.

“Her strong will as well as her strength had always amazed me, her loyalty to her loved ones something I have always admired about her and the moment she refused to give up even after our fight was the moment I realized that I fell for her, and that I would refuse to let anyone other than myself stand by her side.” He confessed, the sincerity that laced his words nearly drowning under the sound of her heartbeat echoing in her chest before he offered her a small smile. “Once I set my mind on something, I will fight for it until the end.”

Lumine felt her chest tighten at the way his eyes shone with affection, the others dreamy sighs barely reaching her as she desperately searched his eyes for any sign of deceit, anything that would tell her that this confession was a part of their cover story, but when she found nothing, she realized that no, this wasn’t part of his role.

It was the truth, and it made Lumine feel as if her heart would jump out of her chest at any given moment.

Before she could even think about replying however, a sudden yell caught their attention that nearly made Lumine jump in her seat, and when she whirled her head towards the source of the yell and caught sight of a handful of guards and a very familiar, angry-looking couple, the blonde stiffened.

Damn.

“Well, seems like this might turn into a fun night after all” Childe drawled, the amusement that laced his voice making Lumine sigh and when his eyes caught hers once more, his lips lifted into a sharp grin. “Ready to kick some ass, sweetheart?”

Lumine couldn’t help the grin that tugged at her lips at the excited gleam his eyes held and when he held out a gloved hand for her to take, she didn’t hesitate to slide it into his.

“As long as you won’t cause the ship to sink.”

Childe merely flashed her a grin as he summoned his hydro swords the second Lumine called her sword, the fearful cries from the others in the room only fueling his excitement as he shot her a wink.

“Can’t promise anything.”

And with that, they charged.

Lumine sighed from where she was standing at the Harbor, the coat wrapped around her small form keeping her shielded from the cold night air as she watched the sinking ship.

Childe was busy talking to Ningguang as both the Fatui agents and the Millileith questioned the passengers and made sure no one could flee.

As much as Childe had tried to hold himself back he still managed to somehow damage the ship enough to make it sink, and if it weren't for her grabbing him just in time and dragging him off the boat, she was sure that they would have gone down with it.

Not that she was surprised, given that Childe was known to go all out.

Lumine huffed to herself in amusement before she tightened his coat around her.

Idiot.

“Having fun?”

Lumine’s lips lifted into a smile when Childe suddenly appeared next to her, his ocean eyes fixed on the sinking ship they so desperately tried to keep overwater as Lumine snorted.

“Nice work, darling .”

Childe’s lips curved upwards into a smooth grin as he turned to look at her, eyes sparkling in a way that made her stomach flip.

“I could say the same about you, sweetheart.”

Lumine smiled for a moment longer, golden eyes shining fondly as she turned to look at him before her smile eventually dimmed and she set her eyes on the ship in front of them once more.

“What you said back then.” She suddenly said, voice having softened as she tightened her hold on his coat when she suddenly felt him stiffen. “Did you mean it?”

A few beats of silence followed her words and Lumine nearly found herself regretting asking in the first place. Maybe she should have just pretended that it never happened, should have just brushed it off as another little lie to solidify their cover, and just when she was about to tell him to forget she had said anything, she suddenly heard him sigh.

“It was.”

Lumine felt her heart jump in her chest when she suddenly felt his gloved hand come to rest on the sides of her face, the feeling of the cool leather against her warm skin making the blood in her veins rush a bit faster, and when he moved to close the distance between them in one step, she suddenly felt the air around them thicken.

“I don’t expect anything.” He mumbled, the way his blue eyes shone with determination and his expression was surprisingly serious making her grip on the front of his coat tighten. “But I have no intention of taking it back.”

Lumine kept her gaze locked with his, the warmth that spread in her chest at his confession making it tighten to the point she found it hard to breathe.

The voices in her mind told her that she shouldn’t, reminded him of just who she was, of who he was, but one look into his eyes was enough to silence them all.

And without any second of hesitation she reached out to grab his face, successfully catching the ginger off guard before she pulled his face down to crash her lips against his.

The second she did she felt him stiffen in surprise, the ginger clearly caught off guard by the sudden action but his surprise lasted for all but the split of a second before he moved his gloved hand to place it on her neck to bring her closer against him, his other one coming to rest on her small back and when Lumine felt him take lead of the kiss, she smiled against his lips.

She knew that it was a bad idea, that it would only complicate things and yet, all of that suddenly didn’t seem to matter at all.

Having him this close felt right and although their philosophies might differ, she knew that when it came to him, the line between good and bad had long become blurred.

And when it came to him, she found that she didn’t care.

It was when he broke the kiss and moved to lean his forehead against hers that her lips lifted into a soft smile as she gazed up at him through her dark lashes.

“You were right.” She whispered, voice breathless as his lips hovered over hers. “This time you gave me a choice, and I made mine accordingly.”

“I wonder if you will still react the same even if I do give you a choice next time.”

Childe’s expression turned smug as he moved to lock his arms around her waist, the sound of his low chuckle making her chest flutter.

“See? Having a Harbinger as your boyfriend isn’t that bad after all, is it?” He mused, nose brushing against hers as his grip on her suddenly tightened. “I wouldn’t mind turning these three days into the rest of our lives.”

Lumine in return merely hummed, the sweet smile on her lips betrayed by the dangerous spark her eyes held.

“Only if you take your hands off my ass, darling .”

Childe shot her a grin that seemed anything but apologetic.

“I’m sorry, lyubimaya.” He apologized, not sounding the least bit sorry at all as he shot her a toothy grin. “It must have slipped.”

Lumine rolled her eyes when he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her closer, the smile that tugged at her lips betraying the annoyance in her eyes.

“Of course it did.”

Maybe agreeing to his request all these days ago was not such a bad idea after all, for having the most deadly Harbinger of them all as her boyfriend all of sudden didn’t seem that bad anymore.
