Chapter Text
"I'm getting married this August."
The voice chat goes dead silent while the chat under George's stream explodes with excitement. Dream hears Sapnap inhale sharply in the call, soft enough for him to catch yet not loud enough for the chat to notice. Or maybe they did notice as question marks begin to pour in.
Moments ago, Dream had been fiddling with his headset, laughing loudly when George fell into lava and abruptly ending his 20 minute speedrun. Long forgetting the headset, Dream’s hand softly settled next to his keyboard while he went quiet to fully process the words.
Sapnap must have realised that they have stayed silent for too long as he hears Sapnap congratulating him weakly. Dream ignores his buzzing phone, where Sapnap must have spammed messages to.
Dream's eyes are pinned to the screen, where George beamed brightly, blissfully unaware. To distract himself, Dream reads the chat. He catches sight of many " What about DNF? " and " Why is Dream so quiet ?" which makes him feel much worse.
George continues to blab about this wonderful woman he met six months ago with flowing blonde hair and a bright smile. He speaks about the autumn wedding they planned on having and how he had proposed to her in the park where they first met. Watching George brandish the ring before the camera, Dream snaps out of his stupor. The ring is beautiful of course, with a large emerald in the centre and small but pretty purple gems lining the outside. There is engraving around the inside, and George explains that it is their anniversary date.
"Why didn't you tell me and Sapnap you had a girlfriend."
His harsh voice interrupts George's rambling about how her favourite colour was green. Of all colours, of course, she likes green, he thought bitterly. George pauses, his expression full of confusion. He tilts his head, scrunching his nose slightly as he replies.
"It was a surprise, now we can all finally meet up at my wedding, wouldn't that be cool?" George pauses and continues uncertainty. "I thought you would both like it."
"Well, you thought wrong didn't you." Dream bites back harshly and before George or Sapnap replies he leaves the call, a resounding ding to announce his departure. Shutting down his computer on George's hurt expression, Dream stands up and flops onto his bed. It was stupid of George not to tell them he had a girlfriend for six whole months before telling the public. All the times he was "busy", was George holding her hand and flocking around their stupid park?
The thought put a bitter taste to his mouth.
He had been stupid, foolish, to think that George might have the slightest bit of feelings for him. The fans shipping them under 'DNF', making thousands, even millions of compilations of the two interactions brought his hopes up. Pining for his best friend for years while flirting with him as a joke was not how he planned his streaming years. Dream hasn't even came out to George that he liked boys, everytime he planned on confessing it he just hesitated and covered it up.
Had he really been hoping that George would stay single all this while? George, perfect, funny, beautiful, George who even had TommyInnit searching “Georgenotfound hot" on his search bar. George who had plenty of fangirls and fanboys practically worshipping the ground he walked on. George who had a talent to bring a fond smile on people's faces even on their worst days. George who everyone seems to like, seems to be drawn to simply by his bright doe eyes and contagious laughter.
Dream felt his eyes sting.
It was absurd that he even thought he had a chance.
