It can be read in whichever order depending on how much mystery you wish to keep; however, both stories are complementary, the main one not relating the events of the first seven months of Dream's captivity.

A chair. Sitting innocuously in an odd corner of an odd hidden corridor. Punz just stares at it, studying the weirdly placed furniture hidden away like some dirty secret … but that’s not what makes his breath catch in his chest and still his every movement. No, it’s the blood stains, the leather straps, the divots and the roughed up wood that he sees lining its edges that make him feel as if he might throw up.
It’s not where the chair is, but where it has been that ties Punz’s stomach into endless knots. It’s the implication carved into it as if suffering is engraved into the very grains of the wood, as if the residue of pain coats it, that makes him freeze with horror. Because it’s the chair.
