Forgotten Mortality

Summary:

Headcanons on how the brothers would react to being reminded that you won't live as long as them.

Your death gets discussed, sometimes you as the Reader are joking, sometimes you're just sad. Sorry, I don't know how to tag that

Notes:

This is my first time writing or rather trying to write headcanons. Also my first work for Obey Me. Also English isn't my mother tongue so if there are any grave mistakes, please tell me. (And I will try to fix them as soon as I found out how to work AO3)

By the way, I think the reader is gender-neutral? Asmo uses pretty and beautiful once but beside that?

Work Text:

Lucifer
• After participating in one of Mammon’s schemes and being caught by Lucifer, you were now standing in his room and were being scolded by the Avatar of Pride for at least half an hour already.
• “Do I need to string you up the chandelier as well?” Lucifer asked you exasperated while pinching his nose.
• You couldn’t help but giggle at him.
• While the avatar of pride was strict, you knew that he would never physically punish you like that. Sure, he made you do chores if you got in trouble but the punishment of being strung up was solely reserved for the brothers, mostly Mammon.
• So currently, he was just spouting empty threats.
• “Do you think I am joking, (y/n)? Maybe a couple of hundred years would do you good!”
• Oho, you had clearly angered the prideful peacock.
• Actually, you had annoyed him so much that he even forgot that you were mortal.
• Normally, this would be a clear sign to be silent now and maybe even apologize. You know, do the clever thing.
• But when had you ever done the clever thing?
• “Do you think a skeleton would look good in the house? I don’t think I would fit in with the aesthetic, but hey, we can give it a try!”
• Your fake enthusiasm only angered the oldest brother more.
• “Now what are you talking about, you-“
• Lucifer started to raise his voice only to go suddenly silent when the penny dropped.
• His eyes widened for a short moment. He seemed to almost deflate as the reality of your words caught up to him.
• “I forgot” he whispered, the anger in his voice replaced with regret.
• His head dropped and you could almost see his guilt washing over him.
• Now you felt actually bad for him.
• You couldn’t blame him for forgetting that you were still human and wouldn’t live as long as he and his brothers would. Sometimes you too would forget.
• Deciding to offer him some comfort, you pulled him close to you and wrapped your arms around him.
• Slowly, Lucifer raised his own arms and started hugging you back. Placing his head on top of yours, the Avatar of pride allowed himself to be soft with you.
• You had no clue how long you two stood in his rooms, just reminding each other that you were still here.
• “You are still in trouble, you know that?”
• Ah come on!

Mammon
• Mammon and you were sitting on the couch in his room, both of you fixated on the TV and the movie that was playing.
• Levi had recommended it to you and of course your first man had to watch it with you, just in case you would cry and needed someone to comfort you.
• You first had laughed at Mammon thinking to yourself that he would probably cry and not you.
• You weren’t completely wrong about that. A soon as the movie started, Mammon was fully invested and often crying.
• The movie was a beautiful love story about an immortal fae who fell in love with a human living in their forest. The movie had started out cute and sweet, however, the ending was absolutely heart-breaking. While the human grew old, the fae stayed the same until the end of the movie, when the human died in their immortal lover’s arms.
• Both you and Mammon cried through the entire credits.
• You first grieved for the fae and their lover but soon you started to cry for a whole different reason.
• The movie had showed your fate. You would grow old, while your friends would stay the same. And when death came for you, you would leave Mammon’s side forever.
• “Oi human, you’re still cryin’?”
• Mammon’s tear had stopped and he now looked at you concerned.
• “Ya know, the Great Mammon knows just the thing to help you. I’ll allow you to hug me, how does that sound-“
• Before Mammon had finished his sentence, you had thrown yourself around his neck and were now clinging to him with all your might.
• “Mammon, that’s my future.” You sobbed in his arms and the demon tensed up.
• You would die and leave him. His human, his treasure, would be forced to leave him one day.
• No, he had already sworn to himself so many months ago, kneeling in the entrance hall with your body in his arms, death would not claim you again.
• The avatar of greed didn’t say anything as he wrapped his arms tight around you. One of his hands started to pet your back reassuringly.
• “No, this is not your fate. Listen to me (y/n), no one will separate us, you hear me? I promise you, we’ll find a solution and you and I, we’ll stay together, okay?”
• You could only whisper a soft okay but Mammon’s word had dried your tears.
• He was the avatar of greed. He wouldn’t give up his treasure to anyone, not even death.

Leviathan
• “Levi, it’s me, (y/n), please let me in!”
• The avatar of envy had flooded the House of Lamentation once again and was now hiding in his room in shame.
• And you were trying to console him which was a bit hard when there was a door between the two of you and Levi wouldn’t talk to you.
• “Come on Levi, I am already starting to miss my best friend” You tried again.
• “Why would you miss a dirty otaku like myself?”
• Well, at least he was now talking to you.
• “I already told you, you’re my best friend, my anime buddy! So please Levi, open the door.”
• “I told you, I’m only coming out after a thousand years have passed!”
• You sighed deeply before sliding down the door with your back to it. As much as you loved Levi, he could be stubborn as hell.
• While you were absolutely ready to wait for him, a thousand years was too long. And just like that a devilish idea appeared in your mind.
• “I’ll wait a thousand years for you, but you should know, only my bones will be left! Try using a skeleton as your player 2. Hopefully, someone will tell my story. The human who waited for the demon to open the door before they died!”
• Suddenly the door opened and you fell backwards to the floor.
• Staring up at Levi, you smiled. “There is my favorite demon!”
• “Don’t-don’t do this again, you hear me, normie?” The avatar of envy had tears in his eyes as he helped you up from the floor.
• You immediately wrapped your arms around him and Levi buried his face in your hair.
• “I apologize for guilt-tripping you into opening the door. May I offer a night full of gaming as a peace offering?” You consoled the demon unable to keep a smile off your face.
• “You’re lucky I love you!” Levi said and pulled you into his rooms.
• Only to have a panic attack seconds later when he realized that he just had confessed.

Satan
• “The author worked for nearly 234 years on the perfect sequel to his debut novel and I think it’s clearly worth it!”
• You and Satan were discussing books while walking home from RAD and Satan was telling you about a new crime novel he bought recently.
• “How many years did you say again?” You couldn’t help but to scrunch up your face at the sheer absurdity of that number.
• “Perfection takes time” Satan defended the author’s choice immediately but you still weren’t fully convinced.
• “Trust me, writing an excellent book like this is worth the time and the effort. Maybe you should try it one day? Let’s see what you can create in that amount of time” Satan challenged you.
• You could only laugh.
• “Satan, that’s like three times my presumable life time! No way that’s possible for me, even if I wanted to!”
• You were still laughing, missing the heartbroken look on Satan’s face as the demon was confronted with the sad reality of your mortality.
• Realizing the demon wasn’t laughing with you or at least giving some snarky comment you looked over just in time to see Satan trying to regain his composure.
• Carefully, you grabbed his hand and squeezed it, making the demon looking over to you.
• You smiled softly at him.
• “You know what, if we try to write a novel together, I am sure we can finish it sooner and it will be a lot better than this one.”
• “Then we’d better get started”
• Satan’s smile didn’t fully reach his eyes but the looming shadow of your death loosened his grip on your demon.
• You two made your way back to the House of Lamentation and if Satan held your hand a bit tighter than normally, you didn’t say anything.

Asmodeus
• Carefully, Asmo combed his fingers through your hair, making sure to not hurt you.
• You had your head on the avatar of lust’s lap and enjoyed being treated like royalty.
• “Don’t you dare falling asleep on me, darling.” Asmo warned you with a soft laugh.
• You only managed to hum in agreement, too content to answer.
• “Oh my, you really are pretty, my dear. Your beauty is even able to compare to mine!”
• You could feel your face getting warm as a result of Asmo’s word. No matter how much time you spent with him, his compliments always made you feel embarrassed.
• “You’re even cuter when you’re blushing. If you aren’t being careful, I might not be able to control myself around you” Asmodeus giggled but still continued petting your head.
• His words didn’t make you feel unsafe, you knew, he always wanted clear consent, no matter what he did.
• However, you really needed a distraction in order to cool down a bit.
• “What are you even doing? Searching for grey hairs?”
• Asmo’s hand halted for a short moment before continuing. “Aren’t you a bit too young for that already?”
• “No, some humans get grey hair pretty early on. Without all of your skincare products, I would probably already have so many wrinkles” You joked and finally opened your eyes to look at Asmodeus.
• The demon had a wistful look on his face and had once again stopped stroking your head.
• “Asmo, everything alright?” You asked him concerned and grabbed his hand.
• The demon shook his head and just squeezed your hand back.
• “Sorry dear, I just forgot that you will age quicker than I do. You will always look absolutely magnificent but let’s make sure that you’ll age gracefully, okay?”
• His beautiful eyes told you everything the demon himself couldn’t bring himself to say. How scared he was of losing you, how much he dreaded the future awaiting the two of you and how he hated your mortality in that moment.
• And so you tried offering comfort in the only way you knew.
• “We’re going to have so many spa-days together, Asmo!”
• I’m still here, I won’t leave you just yet, it’s okay.
• “We will, my dear”
• I know
• There was no need for other words. As much of your time as you could give, belonged to him.

Beelzebub
• “We’re too late” You said and tried to catch your breath.
• Beel, who wasn’t even in the slightest bit exhausted by your sprint, looked like a puppy whose favorite toy got stolen.
• “But I wanted to try the Special Hellish Curse Ice Cream” He almost whined.
• Beel and you had been on a mission to buy and eat a special kind of ice cream which was only sold by a single vendor, who only appeared for one hour each 666 years.
• How a business like that should work, you had no idea.
• To both of your misfortune, the time slot of the ice cream shop had overlapped with your last course at RAD. Lucifer had already his eyes on you, so skipping class hadn’t been an option.
• Now, you regretted it deeply.
• There did your chance go of ever tasting this apparently amazing ice cream for yourself.
• You had had a long day at RAD and now with the disappointment of missing the ice cream vendor, you could feel tears welling up in your eyes.
• “Hey (y/n), are you crying?” Beel asked you concerned and leaned down to your height.
• “No” you answered stubbornly and wiped your tears.
• “We can just try to catch him next time, okay?” The gentle giant tried to comfort you and ruffled your hair.
• “I only had one chance, next time, I’m going to be dead already! This is just unfair!”, You complained and Beel’s hand on top of your head froze.
• The demon was clearly stunned by your outburst but soon his eyes filled with a deep sadness.
• You immediately regretted your words: “Oh Beel, I am so sorry, I didn’t mean to say something like that!”
• Instead of answering you, Beel just lifted you up and hugged you as hard as he could, without killing you.
• He even carried you home, not quite ready to let you go so soon.
• After the ice cream incident, Beel stayed closer to you than before. Always watching out for things that could end up being dangerous for you.
• You were human, your time was already short. You clearly didn’t need to die by falling down the stairs.
• However, he didn’t just protect you, he also helped you to make the best of your time.
• And so it came that three days later, you two were eating a big cup of Special Hellish Curse Ice Cream.
• You hated it.

Belphegor
• “And that’s why I like the stars. What about you, (y/n)?”
• The avatar of sloth and you were sitting on the floor of the planetarium, surrounded by mountains of blankets and pillows.
• Belphie’s question caught you off guard for a moment.
• You knew that you liked the stars. You always had but for what reason?
• “I think, I like them because in the human world, they only come out at night. When it’s dark, you have all those little lights shining down on you. It’s somehow comforting.”
• You clearly weren’t finished and Belphie waited patiently for you, a soft smile on his face as he looked at you.
• You took a deep breath before continuing.
• “I like them in the Devildom because I know that they will be watching over you and your brothers even when I am long gone. It doesn’t matter how much time passes, when you look up at the sky, the stars will still be the same as they are today”
• You could feel the demon beside you tensing up, his smile vanishing.
• Of all the brothers, Belphie was the one who knew best about how fragile your mortal life was. He was reminded of it nearly every day when he basked in the light of your love.
• Carefully, the demon shrugged the blankets around him off and scooted closer to you. He wrapped you in a sideway hug and placed his head on your shoulder.
• Your hand came up on its own and started petting his hair. The silence between you filled with words unspoken.
• Finally you spoke up, voice uncertain.
• “I hope that when you look up at the stars that you will remember me and how it was.”
• Belphie’s answer came so soft, you could barely hear him and yet his words eased your worry.
• “I promise you, I will look at them each night and I will remember you, for all eternity, until we find each other again”
