Work Text:

Foggy is really fucking stressed out.

For the past week, him and Matt have been spending practically every minute with each other. Matt, to escape the stifling atmosphere that hangs over the orphanage. Foggy, to have someone to joke around with as he tries to distract himself from the looming inevitability that is Ivy Day.

Now, him and Matt are sitting on his bed together, Foggy with a computer balanced on his legs. Matt is tapping on Foggy’s thigh, and Foggy’s heartbeat slows slightly to the beat of Matt’s steady rhythm. Matt’s already committed to Columbia, has been since his Early Action letter came in. That makes Foggy even more anxious. They both know it wouldn’t be the end of the world to be separated for college, but man, it would feel like it.

Foggy fumbles while opening his admissions portals.

“Harvard, then Columbia,” Foggy says quietly, almost to himself. The previously discussed order of opening the letters.

Matt nudges him a little. He types in his username, then password, then he clicks submit.

We regret to inform you…

Foggy sighs.

“That’s a no?” Matt asks.

“That’s a no,” Foggy confirms, “Their loss.” It sounds flat, even to him.

His hands are shaking as he types in his username and password into the Columbia portal. He hits submit, and then he closes his eyes, reaching for Matt’s hand and strangling it in his grip.

Matt squeezes, and he opens his eyes.

He sees the Congratulations! and almost screams.

“What is it?” Matt says, and Foggy can hear the barely concealed anxiousness in his voice.

Foggy’s on cloud 9, and he’s not thinking straight, so he grabs Matt up in a bear hug, and then he pulls away, and then he leans back in and kisses him.

Not like the little pecks on the cheek they’ve shared before, when they’re both a little stupid and drunk, but a real, romantic kiss.

He’s so ecstatic. His mind jumps from the fact that he got into Columbia, to the fact that hes kissing Matt, to oh my god I’m kissing Matt Murdock, my best friend since the fifth grade, my very straight best friend, oh fuck.

He jerks away, eyes wide. Matt just sits there. His eyes are a little wide, but, naturally, it’s a little hard to read his emotions from them. He glances down at his lips—jesus christ, those are the lips he was kissing about five seconds ago, and they’re very nice lips—pull yourself together, Nelson. They’re not turned down in a frown, but they aren’t exactly smiling either. A flush is spread across his face, the same color as his glasses, but Matt blushes easily. It’s a weakness.

“Sorry,” Foggy says, mortified.

“Why did you just do that?” Matt asks, quietly.

“Oh, man, I don’t know,” Foggy scrambles, “heat of the moment,” he stutters, “I thought it would be funny?"

“You thought kissing me would be funny,” Matt is really frowning this time, and Foggy knows he’s messed up.

“No!”

“You just said so, word-for-word.”

“I didn’t mean it.” And that much is true.

“Did you mean the kiss?” Matt asks, and it’s as hesitant as Foggy’s ever heard him. Matt Murdock is never hesitant, so Foggy takes the chance.

“Yes,” he says, and then he holds his breath.

Matt is sitting still as a statue. Foggy can’t read him. And he knows Matt is hard to read, but he’s picked up on Matt’s subtle giveaways over years of friendship. And Matt doesn’t want to give away his next move now.

There’s a tension over the room. Matt’s leg is still just barely brushing his. He left the window open, and he can hear the faint sounds of Hell’s Kitchen outside.

Foggy’s about to kneel over dead on the bed with embarrassment and leave Matt to take care of his body when Matt lunges forward and kisses him.

Foggy almost chokes, then melts into Matt’s lips, because man is he a good kisser. Matt reaches up to cup Foggy’s face, tilting it towards his. For minutes—minutes!—they’re making out on his bed, and Foggy sneakily pinches himself at one point, because he’s had one too many dreams about this.

Matt pulls away after what seems like forever, and they seem to have kissed all the words away. There’s a beat of silence, but it’s much more comfortable than previously.

“You kissed me,” Foggy says.

“You kissed me first,” Matt argues back.

“Fine, we both kissed each other.”

“What does this mean, then?” Matt asks, then adds, “For us?”

“I’m glaring at you right now,” Foggy says sternly.

Matt sighs. “Foggy Nelson,” he holds out his hands dramatically and waits until Foggy takes them, “will you be my boyfriend?”

“I thought you’d never ask. No, seriously.”

Matt laughs. “We’re idiots."

“Idiots who are headed to Columbia!” Foggy adds on cheerfully. He’s trying to sound casual, but he’s definitely screaming into his pillow once Matt leaves.

Matt is smiling ear-to-ear now. “Here’s to Nelson and Murdock, partners in life, and, very soon, partners in law!”
