Work Text:
It was the talk of the entire graduation ceremony, and not all of the comments were complimentary. Peter listened as Lydia criticised Greenberg for taking the shine off of his (now fiancee’s) moment by proposing on stage as she was accepting her diploma and waited for Stiles’ response.
“It was all a bit dramatic if you ask me – and that’s saying something considering what we deal with on the regular!” Stiles said, his tone sarcastic. “I mean, she needs an award for putting up with him on the regular, without him trying to upstage her diploma ceremony!”
Lydia nodded her agreement before being dragged away by her Mother for another photo opportunity.
“You’re quiet,” Stiles said, standing relaxed within the circle of Peter’s arms.
“Am I? Perhaps I’m simply working hard to refrain from biting the heads off of this group of annoying teenagers. If I hear one more conversation that consists of ‘dude, I am so gonna miss you’ followed by an emotionally constipated ‘dude’ in response, I may snap my restraints and kill,” Peter responded, appreciating the laughter that bubbled out of Stiles.
“What can I say? Not all of them have spent the last two years being forced into maturity by fighting creatures of the night!”
“Good point.” Peter shifted slightly, trying to remain relaxed. “So – you were not impressed with Greenberg’s proposal?”
“Hell, no! If you need to make a display like that are you doing it because you’re in love or because you want to show off to everyone? I mean, flash-mobs, plane messages – it’s worse than when people were trying to invite people to Prom using questionable methods! What’s wrong with making it a private moment between two people? The way my Dad describes it, he took my Mom out for a quiet dinner, then got down on one knee while they were taking a stroll – that’s romantic! And private!” Peter listened to Stiles’ rant, smiling as Stiles got into his stride. “Besides, what the hell happens if the person says no? You’ve got egg on your face in front of the whole damned world! Thank you but no thank you!”
“So what, you’d prefer it if someone just pulled out a ring and said how about it?” Peter said snarkily, and Stiles turned in his embrace.
“What’s wrong with that? If it’s said from the heart – like, really from the heart – what more do you need? Oh look, there’s Dad and Mel – we should grab them for some photos before we head out to the house for the party!”
“Excellent idea – oh, Stiles, before we head out – “ Stiles turned towards him and Peter held out his hand with the outrageously expensive ring in it. “How about it?”
“What?”
“How about it?” The whoop that Stiles gave and the passionate kiss might have caught the attention of a few people, but Peter thought it was relatively discreet.
He would ask Derek to make sure to cancel the sky-writing Peter had booked for the party.
