Chapter Text

"when will you get a boyfriend?"

you sighed at the overused question that was asked by your fourteen year old sister almost every morning, as you spread butter and jam onto your toast.

"jia, leave your sister alone," your father chuckled before taking a sip of his coffee.

you took a bite out of your late breakfast, "yeah, leave me alone. what is it with you and my love life, anyways?"

jia scoffed, "first of all, you don't even have a love life, and second of all, i really just want an older brother- or something close to one. you getting a boyfriend would give me that opportunity. but it can't be like those bad boys that only date for a week and get bored. someone that'll stay for a very long time. maybe even forever."

you paused and looked over at your dad who held the same facial expression as you. the young teen looked up at the both of you and giggled sheepishly.

"so, am i allowed to choose my own boyfriend or...?" you trailed off.

she shook her head slowly, "sis, you should know by now that if anyone had the chance to mess with you, they could."

your eyebrows automatically raised at her statement, "excuse me? i think i'm quite strong headed, thank you very much."

"no one else thinks that but you."

"alright, that's enough," your dad coughed and glanced over at his watch. "in fact, you two better leave before you're late for school."

jia groaned with her whole chest as she stood up to put her bowl in the sink, "ugh, that's another thing; when are you going to get your driver's license?"

as she walked past you, you ruffled her neatly straightened hair and decided to ignore her complaints. if you bit back, you knew the conversation wouldn't end. she frowned and flattened down her hair.

it's only been the three of you for almost two years now. unfortunately, your mother died due to heart disease, and it was honestly so hard for you to let her go, more than you thought. she was your role model and taught you things not every mother would. she was definitely the most beautiful and caring woman to have been alive, but for her to slip right through everyone's fingers, honestly felt like a curse.

when jia turned into a young teenager, she wasn't as privileged as you to have a grown woman around to typically teach her about periods, makeup and boys. but, she had you as her secondary source; spilling every single detail about every topic that your mother had taught you. nonetheless, your younger sister was grateful to at least have you.

even if she likes to complain a lot, you can still tell she loves you.

-

as soon as you arrived at school, jia was almost bombarded by her friends, and you chuckled before making your way inside the building. you younger sister was definitely known as the 'cool, popular kid' that everyone wants to be friends with.

in your grade, you were quite the opposite; the reserved girl who only really has one friend. well- best friend.

"hey, sexy!" your best friend, marjo, nudged you as you open your locker. you greeted her back and smiled at her energy. marjo looked back at your little sister who was giggling with her friends. "i see your sister is still the reigning queen. are you sure you're related?"

you rolled your eyes and grabbed the books you needed, "yes, i'm just not a social butterfly like she is. besides, she might not talk to half of those friends in a couple year's time."

your best friend shrugs, but nods in agreement.

lee marjo was, well, let's say free-spirited. she rarely ever worries about anything, unless she really needed to. she's the type to enjoy dressing up and going to parties. her smile could light up the entire world if she wanted it to, and of course she knows every single piece of gossip that goes around the school. even though you never want to know, she tells you anyways. most of it turns out to be pointless drama in the end.

to you, anyway.

you could say that she sometimes help you to take chances and let go a little bit. since you can be stubborn, it's hard for her to get you out of your shell. she loves you either way, so she never tries to force it out of you.

whilst you were both walking to homeroom, marjo suddenly grabbed your arm and her breath hitched.

"taehyung looks so damn fine today," she sighed dreamily.

you almost snorted and looked to where her eyes were. he was walking with his friend to the same classroom a few feet feet away. you glanced over at marjo who practically had heart eyes and scoffed at how whipped she was for him.

"you say that all the time."

"well, that doesn't make it any less true."

she's had a crush on kim taehyung for a few months now, ever since they were paired up for a chemistry assignment. he's known as the most handsome guy in school and also someone who never really dates unless he feels the need to. he prefers to live in the moment.

the friend he's walking with is no other than jeon jungkook. quite evidently the school's most popular football jock who could get any girl swooning at his feet if he wanted to. he's also quite privately known as your old childhood best friend. you've known each other since birth, but slightly grew apart when his status started to become more known since the start of high school and then got into a relationship a couple years later.

you both talked to each other sometimes but, it wasn't anything that would carry on for longer than a few seconds, since hana was always hogging him, and jungkook did feel bad about that on his behalf.

after half-losing him and then your mother, it was hard to grasp it all at once. but then marjo came into your life and she was always there for you, no matter how social she is.

"hey, is it me or does jungkook look...upset?" your best friend whispered to you as soon as you sat down at desks that were right next to each other.

you glanced over at the jock, who, indeed, looked completely out of sorts. he was sat in front of marjo, which wasn't exactly his preferable seat choice, since he normally sits next to hana and his friends. you frowned at the odd image of him slumped back in his chair, his bulky, white trainers quietly tapping against the wooden floor and a visible scowl displayed on his face.

"good morning everyone!" your homeroom teacher greets, and you all politely greet her back. "please remain silent as i register you all."

you were planning to ignore jungkook's gloomy state throughout the whole half an hour. but when the teacher assigned you all to study for upcoming exams, you couldn't help but let curiosity get the best of you.

so, you opened your notebook and ripped out a small piece of paper from the corner before writing down 'are you okay?'.

marjo frowned when you reached over and tapped his back. he turned around abruptly and was shocked to see you, as you gave him the piece of paper with a small smile. he took it from you and turned back around to read it, and he was surprised when he saw what you wrote.

"what are you doing?" marjo leaned over and whispered to you.

before you could even answer, jungkook turned back around after writing something back and you opened it up, reading 'not really, but don't worry about it :)'.

even though you two had definitely drifted apart, you still cared about him and you'd be lying if you said you weren't concerned.

-

you waited for marjo to join you at your regular bench by the football field, until you suddenly heard her calling your name.

"y/n! y/n!"

your head lifted up to see her almost rushing towards her before she stopped at the bench.

"what?" you giggled, reading her dramatic facial expression.

"i know the reason why jungkook was so upset during homeroom," she says and sits down opposite you. you motion for her to continue as she presses her glossy lips together. "hana broke up with him last night."
