Chapter Text
It seemed to happen in slow motion. Anakin stood there on top of the building waiting for Obi-wan to respond to him when the force screamed a warning. Ankain's head snapped around towards Obi-wan’s position as he heard the sound of a sniper being shot. He turned just in time to see a red blaster bolt hit Obi-wan in the chest. Obi-wan grunted in pain and stumbled back, falling off the roof of the building. Anakin’s eyes widened at the sight of his former master falling. “Obi-wan!” Anakin shouted in alarm.
Ahsoka the ever loyal padawan quickly gestured to Anakin to keep going. “I got him. Go!” she shouted to him. Anakin nodded and quickly took off after the sniper, leaping across to the building the sniper was on as Ahsoka quickly went to Obi-wan’s side.
Anakin chased the sniper on the roof of the building, anger fueling him, urging him to go faster. How dare that sniper shoot Obi-wan, Anakin thought angrily, how dare they try to hurt his master. Just as Anakin started to gain on the sniper, the sniper hopped onto a speeder bike and took off, leaving a smoke bomb in his wake. Anakin charged through the smoke, coughing violently and waving his arms wildly to clear the smoke. When the smoke cleared the sniper was gone. Anakin growled in frustration at the sniper getting away. With a last glance over his shoulder, Anakin turned around and ran back to Ahsoka and Obi-wan.
“How is he,” Anakin asked as he approached his apprentice. Ahsoka looked up at her master, tears in her eyes as she cradled Obi-wan’s head in her lap. All she did was shake her head, devastation clear on her face.
Anakin's stomach dropped. He quickly knelt next to Obi-wan saying his name as he shook him. “Obi-wan, Obi-wan!” His voice getting more and more desperate as he said it. “Obi-wan,” Anakin cried, firmly shaking him. No this couldn't be happening, not right now, not on Coruscant, to Obi-wan of all people. Anakin grabbed Obi-wan’s limp wrist searching desperately for a pulse. There was no pulse. Anakin took a shuddering breath doing his best to hold back the tears that threatened to spill over. “Obi-wan!” He cried. No response. Anakin reached for the bond between them and found it gone, broken. Anakin sat there shaking Obi-wan, hoping desperately that the force would give him this one thing. He already lost his mother, he couldn't lose Obi-wan too. But the force did nothing. Obi-wan was dead.
Obi-wan was alive, and Anakin was avoiding him. Anakin really did not want to talk to Obi-wan even though it was clear Obi-wan wanted to talk to him. It's been about 2 weeks since the whole Rako Hardeen fiasco and Anakin was still not ready to talk to Obi-wan, not after what he did.
Obi-wan of course thought he did nothing wrong. He did his duty, saved the chancellor from getting kidnapped and stopped the Separatists. By all means Anakin should not be mad at him, if anything he should be thanking him. After all, he did save a dear friend and mentor. And he did it all for the low low price of losing Anakin’s trust. Clearly this friendship between the two meant more to Anakin then it did to Obi-wan.
At least that’s what Anakin told himself as he again dodged Obi-wan’s attempts at talking with him. Anakin quickly walked towards his quarters doing his best to ignore the brief look of hurt that flashed onto Obi-wan’s face as Anakin again ignored him and any attempt to engage him in a conversation. He deserves it, he told himself firmly after what he put me through, he deserves it. The walk to his quarters was shorter than expected as thoughts of hurt, anger, and betrayal consumed his mind. He stopped abruptly as he sensed Ahsoka’s presence in the room. She was supposed to be in class right now, what was she doing here? Pushing all previous thought’s of Obi-wan to the back of his mind, he entered the room.
Anakin was immediately greeted with the sight of Ahsoka lounging on the couch, a data pad in hand. Her legs were dangling off the side of the couch and her head cushioned by a pillow. Anakin frowned at the sight. “What are you doing,” He questioned.
Ahsoka glanced up surprised at his sudden appearance. “Oh, hi Master,” She said “I didn’t know you were here, how was the meeting?”
Anakin folded his arms across his chest, and raised an eyebrow. “It was good,” he said, walking over to the small kitchenette and sitting down. “What are you doing here so early, shouldn't you be in class?”
Ahsoka shrugged “they let us out early.”
“Really?” Anakin asked surprised, “Doesn’t Master Tigar teach that class?”
Ahsoka nodded, turning her attention back to the data pad, “yup.”
“If I remember correctly Master Tigar rarely lets class out early.”
She shrugged again. “I think she came down with something.”
Anakin nodded and walked over to her, “whatcha working on?”
“My philosophy homework.”
“Yicks philosophy, I've always hated philosophy.”
“And that’s why I didn’t ask for your help.”
Anakin looked at her with mock hurt on his face. “Just because I hate philosophy doesn't mean I'm not good at it.”
“No, it's because you hate philosophy is why you are really bad at it.”
Anakin gave Ahsoka a glare. “How do you know, I could be really good at it and just hide it because I don’t want to be labeled a nerd.”
“Master, you are a nerd even without your supposed knowledge of philosophy.”
Anakin gasped dramatically, faking a hurt look. “My own padawan, insulting me. What has the galaxy come to?”
Ahsoka snorted, “don’t worry master the world’s not ending just yet.”
“It might as well be ending,” he grumbled.
“What was that Master?”
“Nothing, I was just wondering why you don’t have this done yet, you usually would have had it done by now.”
“Yeah, but usually I would get help from Master Obi-” She cut herself off abruptly before she finishing his name, leaving an awkward pause in the middle of the sentence.
The silence was almost deafening. Neither Anakin nor Ashoka said Obi-Wan’s name very often. It was a silent agreement the two had. Because it wasn't just Anakin Obi-wan hurt, he also hurt Ahsoka. Ahsoka was the one who held Obi-Wan’s body in her arms desperately trying to save him, thinking she failed not just him but her Master as well. While Anakin knew Ahsoka was mad at Obi-Wan as well he knew she was also relieved that he was alive. Ashoka didn’t take her anger to the extent of avoiding him at every turn she took like Anakin did, but she did not spend the usual amount of time with him as she usually did.
While Anakin knew it was a show of loyalty to him, he also knew that Obi-Wan was a big part of Ahsoka’s life and it wasn’t fair to her if she kept avoiding him for Anakin. But Anakin couldn't bring himself to face Obi-Wan yet. If he was being honest he wasn't sure if he ever would be able to. But he knew it was only a matter of time before he was forced to talk to Obi-Wan. They were at war after all, and war didn't take personal feelings into account. Right now Obi-Wan was letting Anakin keep his distance, but it was only a matter of time before they were forced together again. They were after all a team, and not just any team, they were The Team as the holonet so creatively labeled them. It sometimes annoyed Anakin to no end that he and Obi-Wan worked so well together and were so famous because of it.
Right now the public saw Obi-Wan’s rise from the dead as a statement. That even the famed Negotiator could overcome death, and that their beloved heroes would be a team once again. That's at least what the holonet said, how wrong they were. If Anakin could barely stand being in the same room with the man, then there was no way they could work as an effective team together.
Anakin awkwardly cleared his throat, “so tell me when you're done so we can have a spar after then go out and get dinner.”
Ahsoka nodded, relieved that Anakin didn't comment on her slip. “Yeah it shouldn't take me long just give me a few minutes and it should be done.”
Anakin raised an eyebrow at her, “don’t rush it, you still have to get a good grade in that class even if we were at war.”
Ahsoka snorted, “when in this war will I have to recite Jedi philosophy in the middle of a battle.”
“I had to do it all the time when I was a padawan.” Anakin said with a smirk.
“That’s because you were failing that class and needed the extra practice, and what better way to memorize philosophy than when you're dodging laser bolts.”
“Hey I was not falling. I was just, not passing, there’s a difference.”
“Sure there is Master, sure there is.”
“If you keep up that snippy attitude with me snips, then I just might make you recite Jedi philosophy in the middle of a battle.”
Ahsoka narrowed her eyes at him, “you wouldn’t dare.”
Anakin smirked mischievously, “Oh my dear padawan I would dare.” The two stared at each other for a moment before both broke out in a fit of laughter. Oh it felt so good to laugh. With everything going on there has just been so little to enjoy and laugh over. Anakin was beginning to think he lost the ability to laugh. It was nice to know that even with the war going on, he and his padawan could still laugh and have fun.
Shaking his head, Anakin squeezed Ashoka’s shoulder. “Hurry up will ya, I want to go spar.”
“Alright Master,” Ahsoka said smiling, “I'll be done in a few minutes.”
“You better be or I'll get dinner without you.” Anakin then grabbed his own datapad and sat across from Ahsoka, savoring this moment of joy, because it seemed he didn’t get many.
