The Next Day

Summary:

After the CFD Gala, what happened between Violet and Hawkins?

Work Text:

The arm around her waist was warm and comforting, and Violet curled into it. Evan pulled her in, pressing a kiss to her forehead as he did.

“Morning.” His voice was low, and she looked up to smile at him.

“Good morning to you too.” He leaned down to kiss her but Violet turned her face away to let him get her cheek.

“Morning breath.”

“I. Don’t. Care.” He pulled her on top, kissing Violet deeply while running his hands through her hair. They grinned as they separated, Evan keeping hold of her.

“I was gonna order room service, want breakfast?”

“That sounds amazing.”

He ordered pancakes and bacon, the two splitting their food and sharing bites. Once they are they started getting dressed, Violet staring at her dress and heels. It wasn’t exactly what she wanted to wear while she was doing a stride of pride as a grown ass adult, but she’d do it. It was worth it.

“Here. Put this on over if it makes you more comfortable.” Evan handed over his hoodie, draping it on her shoulders once the dress was on.

“Are you a mind reader?”

“No, I just think if I was leaving in my tux I’d be self conscious. I thought it’d be easier.”

“Thanks.” The instinct to reach up and kiss him was too easy, Evan’s hands on her hips as she did. When he smiled against her she did the same, staring into his brown eyes.

“I know this is soon, but dinner tonight? I don’t want this to be a one time thing.” He seemed nervous, and Violet couldn’t help the grin that spread across her face.

“I wouldn’t have been here if I thought it was one time.”

She stood back as Evan checked out of the hotel and paid for breakfast, holding her hand as they left. His fingers fit perfectly in hers, and when they made it to his car he opened the passenger door for her. It didn’t take long to get to her apartment, Evan turning to her.

“I can pick you up at seven? There’s an Ethiopian place I really like, is that something you’d be interested in?”

“Yeah, that’d be great. Thanks.” He kissed her goodbye before she got out of the car, squeezing her hand.

When Violet got inside she dropped her bag and squealed in delight. The idea that she could have kissed Evan was unbelievable. They’d said they’d stay apart, but when he pushed her against that glass and kissed her there was nothing else she could have wanted. And in his hotel room he made sure to care about what she wanted, checking in on her, making sure she enjoyed herself. It had been a long time since she felt that way.

After doing the cleaning she wanted to do she stared at her wardrobe to try pick an outfit before flopping back on her bed. If this was a normal date she’d ask a friend for advice, but the friends she wanted to ask were Sylvie and Stella.

Except she couldn’t. This thing with Evan could blow up in their faces in a big way depending on how things went. But she wanted it to work. Dating was tough with their jobs, guys didn’t always get what it was like. Evan would, but so many guys didn’t. Sylvie and Stella both knew what it was like to date someone in CFD.

Violet picked up her phone and called Sylvie, her partner picking up after a few rings.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“I have a date in three hours and I can’t decide what to wear. Can you come over and help?”

“I’m on my way! Is it Gallo?”

“Nope. We can talk when you get here.”

It didn’t take long for Sylvie to arrive, a hug in greeting.

“How was the gala? Getting your award?”

“It was a CFD event. Rubber chicken, an open bar, Stella, Boden, and Severide brought Kilbourne down. And I may have kissed Hawkins and spent the night with him and he’s who I’m going on a date with in a little while.” The last sentence was said quickly, but Violet saw Sylvie’s eyes widen.

“You mean…you’re going on a date with him? Seriously?”

“Yeah. He’s sweet and good looking and a good guy. I know the rules, but it’s worth it.”

“Are you sure?” Sylvie looked nervous, and all Violet could do was nod.

“I’m positive. It’s worth it with him. I just…he likes me for who I am. Not who he thinks I am. And he brought me bubbly water in the hospital.”

“Then go for it. Where are you going for food?”

“Ethiopian?”

It didn’t take long for Sylvie to help her pick an outfit, dark jeans and a black and white checked shirt. Sylvie left soon after, with a hug and a promise to see her soon.

The wait for Evan to pick her up felt like an age, but finally he knocked on her door. When Violet opened it he was standing there in jeans and a button up, a bouquet of flowers in his hand.

“I thought you might like these.” He handed them over with a kiss on her cheek, watching as Violet put them in a vase.

It didn’t take long to get them in, and they walked out hand in hand. Evan repeated his opening the door for her, the two of them driving to the restaurant.

They ate with their hands, sharing injera and splitting bites of food. It was relaxing and fun, going to a brewery down the street for a drink. Evan kissed her outside it, the two of them grinning at each other.

“I know this is a serious thing to say. But I want us to disclose. Whatever’s between us is a real thing, and I want to make sure the CFD can’t stop it. If we disclose now, they can’t argue. If we wait we could have problems.”

“I’m in. A good friend once told me when you know, you know. And I know this could be really good.”

He kissed her fiercely, hands in hair before dropping her home. And the next morning when Violet arrived into work, there was a form waiting for her signature to confirm that they were in a relationship.
