Work Text:
William rubbed his face with his hand as the front door slammed shut. He just lost his temper and went too far this time but Michael would be back. He runs off at any chance he gets but he always comes back. William made his way back into his office.
William had expected Michael to try and get the toy sooner than he did, Maybe he spent the last 2 years planning, William didn’t know. He sat at his desk and exhaled, grabbing his journal. He flipped through the pages, skimming through his work. There was still a lot to be done.
A page was missing, then two, then three.
William leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk, putting his head in his hands. Michael wasn’t coming back, not anymore, and neither would Henry. William wasn’t a stupid man, he knew where his son ran off to after every fight. He also knew Michael would show Henry the pages and that’d stir up shit that William didn’t have a plan to confront yet.
He’d have to think quick, he didn’t have much time if he wanted to be out of here by sunrise. He grabbed his journal and any other incriminating files and stacked them in a pile, he then tided his office before leaving the room. William paused as he passed Michael’s room, in a twisted way, he was gonna miss his son. They could’ve done great things together.
William put all the files and notes into a bag then stuffed some clothes overtop of them. He opened his nightstand drawer and grabbed the fake ID he had just in case something like this happened. He considered himself lucky that Michael didn’t see the last page. He left a note in the kitchen asking Michael to free his sister. Talk about killing birds, both of them would be out of his hair. William grabbed the car keys but his hand lingered on the doorknob, not yet turning it.
He didn’t feel bad leaving Michael behind, it wasn’t that. Maybe he should, wasn’t that the human thing to feel? No sane human would voluntarily leave their child behind but William had crossed that line years ago. This wasn’t even the worst thing he’s done. William didn’t love his son, but he didn’t mean to nearly kill the boy.
Sending him to free Elizabeth would kill him anyways, and in some ways, William was counting on it. He twisted the doorknob.
Henry had asked Michael to wait in the car, just in case. The open door revealed nothing, the house was dark. Henry looked around, there were no signs that William had even made it home last night.
He made his way to the kitchen. Henry wasn’t going to lie to himself, he was surprised William had even left a note, he thought William was just going to be MIA. He crumpled his note, he didn’t want to read anything William was saying.
He leaned against the counter, resting his head in his hand. William had left a note for Michael but it was just utter nonsense.
Nonetheless, the kid deserved to read it. In some ways, Henry was glad William decided to skip town, who knew what would’ve happened if he’d been here. Henry let out a sigh, he didn’t know what he was going to tell Michael.
