    “I can’t,” he responds numbly as she encourages his legs to take step after limping step. “I’m dying.”

    “No, Ben. You’re not.” It sounds more like she’s denying him some opportunity than reassuring him, like she won’t let him die, like her outright refusal can stop the inevitable. 

    To her credit, it seems to be working.
