Lena lays the magazine on her desk, her own face looks back at her from the open spread. Magnetic. True to its namesake, the word pulls the corner of her lips into an unintentional smile. She draws her open palms to her cheeks and tries to force her face back into its usual stoic resting position. It takes a minute longer than she’d prefer, but she regains her composure and straightens herself in her chair.
Magnetic. Like north poles to south, her eyes reconnect with the article. It contains nothing but positivity about her and the direction she’s taking her newly renamed company. Though Kara seemed harmless enough the first time they met, their conversation regarding her alien detection device left Lena worrying she might have ruined her good press on her second appearance in National City’s printed news. But the words on the page wreak of unbiased neutrality which, given Lex’s descent into comic-villain madness and Lionel’s questionable business practices, Lena considers a win.
Magnetic. Her eyes target the word amongst words and oh, what a word it is. When Kara first entered her office, Lena hardly noticed the woman hiding behind the notorious Clark Kent. But with the words, “Supergirl was there, too,” she piqued Lena’s interest. Any person willing to draw credit from the Man of Steel earns a gold star in Lena’s book, and Kara’s little outburst and subsequent shyness might have been the cutest thing Lena’s seen since, well, she’d have to think about that.
Magnetic. It’s not like Lena spent every free minute since Kara walked out of her office that day trying to separate her thoughts from Kara Danvers. When Kara showed up at the press conference without a notebook or recording device, Lena wondered if the interest might be mutual. Though Lena rejected Kara’s concern for her well-being, the sentiment percolated through her “I’m not here to make friends” armor and tickled every inch of her skin.
Magnetic. Lena certainly didn’t feel drawn to Kara like she hadn’t since she first met Andrea in boarding school. Her interest stemmed from her scientific curiosity to learn more about the mysterious person who earned Cat Grant’s respect enough to not just avoid getting fired but also receive a promotion. Beneath her unassuming exterior, Kara Danvers teased a vigor and passion that Lena found herself wanting to know more about.
The phone on her desk rings and draws her from her thoughts. Jess’s notification moves Lena to quick action. She grabs the magazine and relocates from her desk to her pristine white couch, where she attempts to look put together and comfortable. Lillian’s disapproval of her tucked under leg is the last thought that runs through her mind when her office door opens and Kara walks through.
Perhaps it’s Kara’s disarming smile or her unabashed use of the word magnetic that launches Lena into her old flirtatious habits, but when she finds herself over-explaining her side of things, reality hits Lena like a Super. She sneaks a final sideways glance at Kara.
Ok, so she might have a little crush.
