By comparison, Sonia feels dainty and weak, like a small pale flower in a sea of wilted grass. Akane is so… strong, and she’s been through so much. How can Sonia show her face to the kids Akane has given everything for when she’s always had so much better?
“You’re puttin' too much thought into it, Princess,” Akane remarks, brows raising. She flops onto her back and stretches, her shirt riding up and revealing a slip of dark midsection before she lowers her arms again. “All your clothes look good. Bet if you wore some pretty dress, Akina’d go crazy. She’s already been bugging me about the fact I’m dating a princess.”
Akane chuckles—and she’s as genuine as she always is, but the smile that Sonia manages to pull onto her face is mirthless, the guilt almost overpowering. Even if she offered financial assistance, Akane wouldn’t accept it. She wants to do everything herself, to fight through the world and take care of her siblings on her own terms. But still, how can Sonia face hungry kids when she’s never known hunger a day in her life?
