Chapter Text
Alex’s foot slipped on one of the steps and they grabbed onto the railing to regain their balance.
Morgan turned back, finger to his lips. “Shh! Alex, you’re going to wake the neighbors.”
“Excuse me! I could’ve died. Well, if I could die, that is.” They released the rail and winced, noticing that there were now indents where their hands had been. Morgan glanced at the indents and raised an eyebrow pointedly. Alex waved him off. They could take care of it later, like when they weren’t already doing something important, such as catching the meteor shower. “And besides, they’re your tenants, Morgan! It doesn’t matter. Why do we have to climb the fire escape anyways? You have the key to the door.”
He scoffed and turned forward, the two of them continuing up. “Where’s the fun in that? You’re so boring sometimes.”
They stared at his back incredulously. Boring? Them? “How dare you. I know how to have fun. Why else would I ask you to go on this picnic with me?” They arrived at the top of the fire escape, the last part would be boosting themselves up and onto the rooftop. Morgan easily swung himself up and over, being used to it from his heists.
“Uhh, because I’m awesome.” They didn’t even have to be on the roof to know that he had a shit-eating grin on his face, they could hear it in his voice. The little fucker.
“Shut up and give me a hand, I don’t want to launch myself into space again.”
“Okay, okay, I’m coming.” Morgan’s face appeared over the side of the ledge and he reached an arm down. Alex grabbed hold and focused on holding on at the right strength. Morgan grunted as he pulled them up and over the ledge, and Alex lets go of their strength and brushes off their pants. How did Morgan’s roof get to be so dirty? Morgan looked down at the slightly dirty rooftop and grimaced. “Do you have the blanket?”
They nod. “Yeah, it’s in the backpack along with the other supplies.” They both get to work setting up the picnic. Alex lays out the blanket while Morgan unpacks the candle, lighter, toothpicks, and ingredients for their smores.
Morgan held up the bag of marshmallows. “You got the mini marshmallows! God, I love you.” Alex’s heart skipped a beat at Morgan’s easy proclamation.
He lit the candle and set it down off of the blanket, but towards the middle of one of the sides, easily accessible by both. He sat down and patted the ground next to him. Alex gingerly crossed their legs and sat down next to him. The two took turns roasting their marshmallows and sharing stories. Eventually, Alex’s alarm went off, reminding them that it was time for the meteor shower. They blew out the candle and laid down, Morgan following suit, close enough that their shoulders nearly brushed against each other.
Alex looked over to “What a nice picnic this has been.”
Morgan snorted and turned over to face Alex, “It’s not really a picnic, it’s making candle smores on the rooftop of an apartment complex. I think a picnic involves more food.”
They shoved him gently with one finger. “You know what I mean.”
“Yeah, it is really nice.” There’s a pause before Morgan continued. “Hey Alex, I’m glad I met you.”
They thought about all that had happened since meeting Morgan, one of the only people who saw them as someone who wasn’t just their power. About how much their life had improved. About how happy they were now.
“Me too, Morgan. Me too.”
