The Fathers Lament

Summary:

The two fathers, Vander and Silco, trying to mentally prepare for their daughters wedding day.

Notes:

A real quick story I made while waiting on revisions for another story

Work Text:

In the grandiose hall, the sun shone through the stained glass windows; illuminating the building in greens, blues, purples, and reds. Today was the day. A day that everyone saw coming from the moment the two first met each other. Inseparable little bastards they were; never one without the other. The entire building was filled with excited whispers, with Ekko standing at the front of the hall seeming to sweat bullets. He constantly looks at Benzo, Claggor, and Mylo for confidence while awkwardly pulling his collar. That was when the doors opened, with the entire hall falling silent as the woman of honor appeared before them.

Jinx didn’t go with the traditional giant and frilly white gown, seeing it as too boring and burdensome to deal with. She instead opted for a more slim blue dress, its tips ending with a bright purple that matched her eyes and a firelight green corsage on her wrist. This dress still was a bit too boring for Jinx, so to spice it up, she ripped and tore at the edges before the ceremony began; much to the dismay of Vi.

While it was the father's job to walk the bride down the aisle, Vander and Silco couldn't stop arguing over who got that right, with Jinx ultimately deciding she would walk by herself.

As Vander turned to see her, he remembered the first time he saw Powder. In the Foundling home, a pair of sisters sat in the corner: a tiny girl with hair as blue as the sky and the older with fiery pink hair atop her head, with the attitude and muscle to match. The blue one clung to her sister like she would fly away at any moment. In the two, he saw himself and his brother; the same way they huddled together on cold nights. While Vander and Silco didn't see eye to eye with each other anymore, especially on whether she should be called Jinx or Powder, he and Silco both could agree that she radiated beauty as she began walking down the aisle.

Time seemed to slow to a stop for Silco when she took her first step. He choked up at the sight of Jinx, his basically-daughter. While it was Vander that adopted her and her sister, it was him that she was more attached to. A fact that made Vander jealous to this day. Despite having already given his blessing for the wedding, he would still glare daggers at Ekko. It took Jinx months of effort to convince him that Ekko was a man worthy of her. Silco could see it too, but he just didn’t have the heart in him to say that he was scared of seeing his little girl be taken away by another.

Seeming to share the same pause in time, Vander and Silco turned to each other and had a conversation with their eyes alone.

“Are you ready?” Vander questioned

“If he hurts her in any way, I’ll have him disappear” answered Silco

“Ha! Me neither.”

Time continued once more as Jinx marched down the hall and the two snapped their eyes back at her. With each step, a different emotion was pounded into the father: Pride. Sadness. Joy. Loneliness. They both remembered how her every wish was a command they would do anything to fulfill, her smile a bright beacon in the muddied air that is Zaun. All the things they had to give up and sacrifice, yet how it was all so worth it if it meant seeing her face light up with joy. These two intimidating figures, one a hulking beast of a man and the other the most fearsome kingpin the Undercity would ever see, both rendered helpless when they looked into her eyes. She seemed to grow up in a split second in front of their very eyes; their little princess was moments away from becoming a queen.

As she stepped up the stairs to finally stand by her husband-to-be, Ekkos's previous anxiety seemed to melt away from his face. Silco had to give up the title of being the only one that understood Jinx, and Vander gave up being Powder's protector. They both entrusted Ekko with those tasks now - though one more than the other - as the now-married couple embraced each other's lips. Cheers filled the halls, and in the craziness that ensued, Jinx swept Ekko off his feet and kissed him even deeper. Benzo and Vi laughed to their heart's content, with Caitlyn struggling to hold in her giggles. Vander and Silco turned to each other one last time, tears filling each of their eyes, with only one question in each other's minds.

Is there anything so undoing as a daughter?
