Haddock Birthdays

Summary:

This story will be a modern-day AU with each member of the Haddock Family celebrating their birthdays. I will also include as a bonus Stoick and Valka's wedding anniversary. So please enjoy the stories, and I hope my friends continue to help me write them for your enjoyment!

Notes:

I want people to know that I plan to write birthday stories for Hiccup and his family members. The reason I'm posting this early? I'm going to be on vacation from the 25th -to the 5th.

Seeing how Hiccup's a leap year baby? Therefore depending on what time he was born? That would determine if they celebrate on the 28th or the 1st during a non-leap year. Either way? Since I won't post this on either day due to being on vacation? It's why I'm posting it early.

I want to take this time to thank my friend Amy AKA Inuyasharocks01862 for coming up with the plot. I hope she can help with the rest of his family's birthdays. Either way? Let's enjoy the story now, shall we?

Inuyasharocks01862 did the artwork.

The Thing About Perfection

It's easy to think that other people's lives are perfect compared to ours. But the perfection we think we're seeing is usually no more then a facade.

It's the exterior of a building that takes much effort to maintain. But unfortunately, the inside of the building isn't usually as pristine. Therefore its not perfect.

What might happen if you stopped censoring your life to achieve perfection? Who would you be?

Instead of striving to present a perfect you to the world? Allow the world to see who you really are on the inside.

Chapter Text

In a city where the past meets now,
Legends walk and show us how.
Dragons turned to loyal friends,
Together, hearts and strength transcend.

In Dragon City, where dreams take flight,
A beacon shining in the night.
Five districts strong, we stand as one,
In Dragon City, our hearts are won.

From every street to every park,
Dogs of dragons leave their mark.
Self-sufficient, proud, and free,
In unity, our destiny.

In Dragon City, where dreams take flight,
A beacon shining in the night.
Five districts strong, we stand as one,
In Dragon City, our hearts are won.

In the heart of our domain,
Different roles, yet all the same.
Together, we forge our way,
In Dragon City, come what may.

In Dragon City, where dreams take flight,
A beacon shining in the night.
Five districts strong, we stand as one,
In Dragon City, our hearts are won.

Due to the increasing climate change issues, springtime arrived prematurely in Dragon City. However, the snow had already thawed, and the trees were starting to sprout.

The students at the city's university were socializing outside in the quad. A young couple was seated at one of the nicer tables. The young flaxen-haired woman appeared to be doing her homework.

Her sexy boyfriend had taken out his sketchbook. He appeared to be drawing a dragon/human hybrid. One glimpse at the sketchbook showed off the prestigious talent of the young man.

"What are you working on, Hiccup?" his girlfriend Astrid asked. She'd been attempting to do her physics assignment. However, it gave her an unbearable headache, so she needed a break.

"Oh, I was drawing some Draco Beings. After all, Astrid. We only thwarted the Second Holy War from breaking out in the Dragon Kingdom four months ago. I've been pondering the idea of creating a series of graphic novels. I want to record our adventures and have fun doing it."

"Hmm, that sounds like a splendid idea to me. However, you've already made it evident you have no desire to be like your father and enter the political world. Isn't that reason you've been majoring in engineering science and art since we started university?"

"Yep, I'd rather play to my strengths. Have you figured out what you're going to do once we finish school?"

"I'm not sure, Hiccup. However, I know I've plenty of time to figure it out!"

The couple shared a quick kiss before resuming their work. After classes let out for the day, the couple headed to catch the train to return to their homes in the Berk district of the city. "Do you have any plans for the weekend, Astrid?" asked Hiccup as he swiped his card in the reader.

"No, not really. Is there something you'd like to do?"

"How about a date at our favorite eatery? It'd be a nice way to spend the weekend."

"Okay, if you're sure, Hiccup."

"Great! I'll pick you up around lunchtime tomorrow then." Shortly afterward, they headed home.

The next day things didn't go as Hiccup planned for their date. When they arrived at their favorite restaurant, it said it was closed. Evidently, according to the sign, they're hosting some big party later.

The couple tried to find another place for their date. However, every spot they frequent was closed today for one reason or another. Then Astrid suggested they go back to the original location.

Hiccup asked why? Seeing how the sign said they're closed for a big party. Astrid said she had a good feeling about it. So the couple went back, and Astrid knocked on the door.

Opening it, she led Hiccup into the dark room. Then the lights instantly came on, and everyone shouted, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HICCUP!" Hiccup stood there shell-shocked. "I don't understand. It's not even my birthday!" Hiccup was a leap year baby. So given that, they usually celebrated his birthday on non-leap years on March 1st, except that it was tomorrow as today was the 28th.

"We wanted to catch you by surprise, BBBFF!" exclaimed his eleven-year-old sister Una. It then clicked in his brain why his sister had insisted on him helping her look nice today. Una couldn't braid her own hair due to lacking motor skills.

So she'd asked him for help weaving her long blond and lilac hair into a French braid this morning. He also understood why his mother had bought him and his siblings some new clothes. Seeing how his mother insisted he wears his new outfit today for his date. His sixteen-year-old brother Boden ran up to hug him!

"So, bro! How does it feel to be legal? It's not every day someone reaches their twenty-first birthday! Or that Mom agrees to let anyone in the family drink alcohol!"

That shocked the birthday boy. His mother was adamant against 'poison.' She went out of her way to keep her family away from cigarettes, vapes, alcohol, and drugs. "Are you serious, Boden?" his older brother asked in disbelief. Finally, his beautiful mother, Valka, walked over with one beer can to prove it true.

"Your father persuaded me that one beer should be allowed due to the occasion. He said its a rite of passage, so I'm allowing it for tonight."

"Thanks, Mom! Thanks, Dad!" as Hiccup popped open the can and slowly drank it. After he finished, a local band started playing. Soon everyone was busy dancing. They brought out the chocolate cake with a twenty-one-shaped candle two hours later. He made his wish and blew it out.

Almost immediately, his wish came true. Because Astrid then proposes to him. Earlier that week, they'd talked about how its silly that women can only propose on a leap year. So it's clear why she decided to propose to him right now. He screamed yes as he kissed her. In short? Hiccup's twenty-first birthday was a blast!

Notes:

Overall, your story has some engaging elements and a charming atmosphere. Here are some points of feedback to consider:

Setting and Atmosphere: You've set the scene well with the arrival of springtime in Dragon City and the university campus. The atmosphere feels lively and relaxed, which is fitting for the beginning of a story.

Characterization: Hiccup and Astrid's characters are recognizable from the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, which is great for fans of the series. However, consider adding more depth to their personalities to make them feel even more three-dimensional. Show us more of their individual quirks, fears, desires, and motivations beyond their relationship and immediate actions.

Dialogue: The dialogue between Hiccup and Astrid feels natural, but you could further develop their voices to make them distinct from each other. Think about how each character might speak differently based on their background, personality, and relationship dynamics.

Pacing: The pacing of the story is generally good, but some parts could be expanded upon to give the reader a deeper understanding of the characters and their world. For example, you could delve into Hiccup's internal thoughts and feelings about turning 21, his relationship with his family, and his aspirations beyond university.

Plot Development: The plot unfolds smoothly, but the sudden surprise birthday party might feel a bit contrived without sufficient build-up or foreshadowing. Consider dropping hints earlier in the story that something special is planned for Hiccup's birthday to make the reveal more satisfying for the reader.

Emotional Impact: The story ends on a high note with Astrid's proposal and Hiccup's acceptance, which is heartwarming and celebratory. However, consider adding more emotional depth to this moment by exploring Hiccup and Astrid's feelings leading up to the proposal, as well as their hopes and dreams for the future together.

Overall, your story has a lot of potential, and with some refinement in characterization, dialogue, pacing, plot development, and emotional impact, it could become even more engaging and memorable. Keep up the good work!
