jungkook is already waiting for him at the café by the time soobin arrives. it’s a quiet time of day, and he’s had his pick of tables and chosen the booth at the back of the store, hands cupping his mug, legs restlessly bouncing under the table. he looks nervous, soobin notes almost immediately, and dread begins to bubble in his stomach. is jungkook the type to schedule a coffee date for a breakup? they’ve only been seeing each other for six weeks, a text would’ve sufficed.

jungkook offers him a tight smile when he sees soobin and soobin returns it, smiling under his mask bright enough that he hopes jungkook will see the way his eyes crinkle. he likes that about soobin. he told him, hands cupping his face, thumbs tracing his cheekbones.

soobin orders a drink for himself and a refill for jungkook, picks out a prettily decorated slice of chocolate mousse cake to go with it because if they’re going to breakup then they should at least get something good out of it. caffeine is never a good choice for nerves but he order an iced americano anyway. habit. silly thing, isn’t it?

he takes the drinks and cake over to jungkook’s table on a little tray, and sets it down. jungkook doesn’t move to greet him. fuck, it really is a breakup.

“thanks,” he says, doing his best to smile before tugging his bottom lip between his lips to chew on it. it’s late november, the first snowfall of the year has come and gone. jungkook’s ears are tinged red, just like his knuckles.

“anytime,” soobin replies. he takes off his puffy coat and hangs it on the chair, and slips off his mask while taking the seat opposite jungkook instead of trying to cuddle up on the booth with him. jungkook won’t meet his eye. that’s not total unusual, jungkook doesn’t particularly like eye contact. the undeniable bad feeling grows regardless.

“what did you want to talk about?” soobin asks instead of waiting for jungkook to initiate conversation. might as well get right into it. he can’t eat the cake right now with the way his stomach is rolling. soobin isn’t that much of a casanova that he’s never been broken up with before, but it doesn’t get easier. he really liked jungkook, and thought things were going well.

they met through a dating app. meeting people was hard, harder than it had any right to be. they had a first date and then a second and then texted each other non-stop in the few days before the third. a typical start, but it felt so exciting to be with him. it just worked. between their third and fourth date jungkook had his heat and still smelled of it when soobin saw him again. it was intoxicating and soobin took him home that night and scented him so strongly his friends could smell jungkook on him the next day even after a shower.

what was jungkook missing? what part of that didn’t he want? maybe he met someone else. it wouldn’t be out of the realms of possibility, just a damn shame.

jungkook tilts his head to the side, presses his lips together.

“i don’t know how to say it, so i’m just going to show you,” jungkook says.

“okay,” soobin replies automatically. getting broken up with by visual cue. this is even better than soobin could’ve expected. jungkook could’ve just text him a picture. he doesn’t say that. waits as jungkook reaches for his bag and retrieves what he’s looking for.

he pauses, as he finds it, taking a slow, deep breath all the way in and all the way out. soobin just watches, nerves coiling in his gut enough to make him feel like he wants to vomit. jungkook pulls out a little ziplock bag from his backpack and places it on the table in front of soobin.

soobin immediately recognises the contents of the bag but his brain can’t catch up with his eyes. there’s a white stick in the bag, with a blue cap over the end. a small, red cross in the middle.

there’s only one thing it could be.

“you’re—“ he starts but can’t make himself finish.

“i’m sorry,” jungkook says.

“no, it’s okay! i just—“

“after my heat, it must’ve been too soon, when we—“

“yeah. yeah,” he says, and then says, “i don’t know what to say,” after a long pause that jungkook doesn’t fill. he laughs a nervous laugh, looking away from the positive pregnancy test jungkook presented him with.

jungkook looks utterly terrified, pale as a sheet, bottom lip red from his constant worrying of it. trust soobin to get his new boyfriend pregnant after two weeks. pretty typical of him, to be honest. it was going too well with jungkook, they got on too well too quickly and now— he laughs again.

“so you’re not breaking up with me?” soobin asks, unable to stop himself from grinning.

“what? no. not unless you want to,” jungkook says, confusion added to his fear.

“no, of course i don’t,” soobin says quickly, “i just thought you asked me to come here to break up with me.”

“soobin, you do see the test, right? you know what it is?” jungkook asks incredulously.

“yeah, hyung, i know what it is. are you— are you keeping it?” he asks in reply. they’re going to have to have this conversation now. soobin is 24, jungkook 26, not a terrible age to have a baby, but not the best either. it’s not something soobin had planned for at least until his late 20s, but plans can change. and, sure, he wanted to be mated first and have a decent job and a bigger apartment, but despite the fact nothing is perfectly aligned, he isn’t scared. is that something to be scared about? he’s running on the relief of not getting broken up with.

“i think i want to,” jungkook admits, mouth twisting into a guilty frown. “you don’t have to stay, i just wanted you to know.”

“we can work it out, hyung,” soobin promises. jungkook still isn’t looking at him so he reaches across the table to take jungkook’s hands that are have gone back to warming his mug. he squeezes jungkook’s hands in his own, runs his thumb over jungkook’s pink knuckles and ducks his head to try and catch jungkook’s eye. when he does he can see the tears in jungkook’s waterline, threatening to spill over. one of them has to be scared, he guesses.

“i’m sorry,” jungkook says again.

“what are you sorry for? it’s not your fault, these things happen,” soobin says, feeling a lot more like the hyung in the situation.

“my heat— it had to be,” jungkook says. it probably was. both of them should’ve known better then to fuck that close to it, even if they did use protection. the night got the better of them.

“maybe it was me. i do… a lot,” soobin says, even if he knows that isn’t it, voice low so only jungkook can hear. what a conversation to overhear. he hopes the students a couple tables away from them are having a great time eavesdropping.

“soobin,” jungkook says, cracking a smile.

“don’t overlook it, hyung. we both did this.” we both made a baby, he doesn’t dare to say out loud.

“yeah,” jungkook hums. jungkook squeezes soobin’s hands back, their drinks and the cake soobin brought for them forgotten on the table, the pregnancy test still between them. it would make a nice picture.

“who else knows?” soobin asks.

“only you. i took it this morning. i’ll only be like 4 weeks, i think, too early to tell anyone else,” jungkook says.

“did you call the doctor?”

jungkook shakes his head. “not yet. it’s too early for that, too.”

the tears in his eyes have dried without falling, and soobin counts that as a success. there’s a lot more questions to ask but he doesn’t want to overwhelm jungkook. does he want to mate before the baby comes? are they going to move in together or wait until it feels more natural to do so? how are they going to deal with the finances and everything they need for the baby and work through the fact they actually only barely know each other.

“you’re really okay with it?” jungkook asks quietly.

“i think so. it hasn’t really hit me yet,” soobin says.

“i’m terrified,” jungkook whispers. “what if—“ he starts and stops.

“don’t overthink it, hyung. everything will be okay,” soobin promises.

“i’m not sure i believe you, but thanks,” jungkook says. “i really couldn’t place how you’d react.”

“were you worried?”

“of course i was worried. who isn’t worried when they find our they’re— i can’t say it yet. doesn’t feel real to me yet either. i just wanted you to know as soon as possible, i couldn’t keep it a secret.”

they’re going to have a baby. like a real, actual child that they’ll have to raise. if he thinks about it too hard then he’s going to end up having a breakdown in this coffeeshop, but now isn’t the time. he’ll have a breakdown when he gets back to his shoebox of an apartment or checks his bank account later in the day. jungkook doesn’t need to be privy to that.

at least jungkook realised early, and they have time to plan.

“thanks for telling me,” soobin says and he means it.

“wait,” jungkook says. he looks up to meet soobin’s eye properly for the first time since soobin joined him at the table. “you thought i invited you out to coffee to break up with you?”

“soobin-ah, i thought i taught you about protection,” yeonjun says with his hand over his face.

“we used protection,” soobin deadpans, “and jungkook was on birth control.”

“so what you’re saying is that your jizz is just very powerful,” beomgyu says.

soobin grimaces, as does yeonjun.

“i think that’s what he’s saying,” taehyun buts in.

even in public they can’t behave. soobin probably should’ve saved this conversation until they got back to someone’s apartment instead of trusting them with it in a restaurant. he was just so excited to tell them he blurted it out as soon as they’d ordered. the waitress probably heard them as she was walking away.

jungkook is telling his friends about the baby right now, too, although they’re very likely reacting better than soobin’s are. jungkook is the maknae of his friend group, and he pre-warned soobin they were probably going to get protective of him in the coming months. soobin doesn’t have that luxury.

“it was just an accident, is what i’m saying, but jungkook wants to keep it and so do i, so that’s it. i’m gonna be an appa,” soobin says, proud smile slipping over his face. he can tell yeonjun is glaring at him from the corner of his eye.

soobin expected a little push back, to be fair. he’s the second oldest of his friend group but still so young. half of them are still in university.

“congrats, hyung,” kai says with a broad smile. the polite one. he knew he could count on kai.

“thank you,” soobin replies.

“i hear kai is quite a popular name these days,” he says next, getting his jammy little foot right in the door.

“how many other kais do you know?” beomgyu asks only to be ignored.

yeonjun is still giving him a look that says what the fuck. he’s more stressed than soobin is. maybe. probably not. soobin feels like he’s going to have a heart attack every time he thinks too hard about the baby. jungkook admitted he does the same, that makes him feel a bit better about it. it’s still early days, they still have time to pull themselves together.

jungkook had his first visit with the midwife two weeks ago and soobin went with him for moral support. the whole time he felt like a teenager in over his head, like he’d gotten his highschool sweetheart knocked up and was having to tag along to appointments to prove to jungkook’s parents that he was serious about being a father.

“are you gonna mate?” taehyun asks.

“we’re not sure yet. it’s not like we’ve known each other for that long,” soobin explains. they’ve talked about it, made a loose list of the pros and cons of mating this early. it could be argued that it’s better for the baby to be born to a mated couple, but that research is a little outdated and as long as they’re together it might not matter that they aren’t actually mated.

“are you going to move in together at least?” yeonjun asks.

soobin nods. “that’s the plan. not sure when, though, but before the baby comes.”

“you’re looking for a new place?” beomgyu, this time.

“no, i’m going to move in with him for the time being. neither of us can afford a new apartment right now and it’s big enough for a baby. we’ll move before they get too big,” he explains.

“wow you really have your whole life planned out,” yeonjun snipes just as the waitress comes over with a tray of side dishes to fill up the table. she has to lean over kai to turn the grill on and he pretends to not to terrified of touching her.

soobin waits until she’s gone again to lean in and say, “no i fucking do not. we just talked about what would be best for now. after the baby is born, who knows what’s going to happen?”

“you’re scared?” kai asks.

“of course i’m scared! it would be insane if i wasn’t. jungkook hyung wants to spend so much time together i haven’t even been able to have a proper breakdown because i don’t want him to see it.”

“you’re going to see him give birth to your child and you don’t want him to see a breakdown?” yeonjun ask. soobin hadn’t even thought of that really: the birth. he adds it to his mental list of things to have a breakdown over when he gets some alone time.

“i don’t want to stress him out! he’s the pregnant one, it’s already stressful enough for him without me making a fuss.”

“ah, soobinnie,” beomgyu sighs. soobin shoots him a glare at the dropped honorific. his friends are awful, truly terrible.

as soon as their meat reaches the table, yeonjun takes charge of grilling with a huff like it’s not something he insists on doing every time. soobin didn’t expect him to get so wound up over the news.

“yeonjunnie hyung looks like he’s about to pass out,” kai says with a chuckle.

yeonjun’s cheeks heat up. “you don’t have any money!” he argues, directly to soobin, clacking the metal tongues he’s holding at him.

“i have some!” soobin argues back, which is not totally a lie. his savings exist, even if they are meagre and he hasn’t gotten around to telling his parents yet but no doubt they’ll want to help with the baby, too. it’s just what his mother needs, a grandchild to dote on. jungkook said he’s not sure how his parents will react given that he’s not mated, but he’s sure they’ll send him some money even if they are mad at him.

“and you’re going to spend it all on some baby!”

my baby.”

“there are worse things to spend your money on,” taehyun says.

“exactly. thank you, taehyun.”

“you’re gonna be a dad guy. you’re gonna bring a baby everywhere with you. you’re going to get boring,” yeonjun whines.

“i think yeonjun hyung is jealous of a baby.”

“i’m not jealous, i’m just stressed! somebody has to be stressed!”

“i am stressed!” soobin says. yeonjun just tuts and flips the meat over on the grill.

iii.

soobin ends up at jungkook’s place that night.

yeonjun paid for his fifth of the bill even after all his complaining. soobin gets it, he’d be the same if yeonjun had accidentally impregnated one of his boyfriends. if yeonjun didn’t exclusively date other omegas.

jungkook messages him just as they’re about to leave the restaurant, telling him to spend the night and soobin weaves his way through the city on autopilot to get there, the cold burning his nose, soju still warm in his chest, hands buried in his coat pockets. the whole time he feels like he’s walking home, and it will be his home, soon.

jungkook’s apartment is bigger than soobin’s in that it has a wall separating the bedroom from the main living space. you could probably fit a crib in here and that’s all you need for a baby for the first little while at least. workable.

he lets himself in to jungkook’s apartment and takes off his shoes in the entryway, placing them neatly on the rack. jungkook is already in bed, wrapped up under several layers of blankets. soobin strips down to his underwear before he gets in.

“how did it go?” jungkook asks quietly.

soobin pushes his chilly face right into jungkook’s neck causing him to jump and smack soobin’s shoulder. soobin smiles against jungkook’s collarbone and wraps his arms around jungkook’s waist, still so tiny.

“it went well,” he replies, “although yeonjun hyung did look like i had told him someone died.”

jungkook snorts. “jimin hyung looked about the same. they’re just worried, i think.”

soobin hums in agreement. he pulls away from jungkook’s neck so he can see his face, his pretty smile.

“do any of them wanna kill me?” soobin asks.

“no! well,” jungkook says and then reconsiders. “no. they don’t.”

“good,” soobin murmurs, leaning in to kiss jungkook. it’s gentle. chaste, even. domestic, one might say. “turn around.”

jungkook does as he’s told, flipping onto his other side. he’s wearing one of soobin’s hoodies that’s too big on him because it’s much too big for soobin, too. soobin pulls jungkook to his chest and slips his hands under the hem of the hoodie to where he wants to be.

jungkook isn’t really showing yet, not with the style of clothes he likes to wear, anyway. he might get lucky and have one of those bumps that never really pops the whole way through. soobin can feel the difference, though, how his belly is smooth and tight, rounded to the touch. soobin skims his palm over it, feeling the slight curve.

“your hands are cold,” jungkook whines with no real effort.

“sorry, baby,” soobin apologises. he doesn’t stop touching, though. jungkook’s hand finds his, slots right over the top of it, fingers between soobin’s so he can touch his bump too.
