Chapter Text
Maka wasn’t expecting any news that day. Frankly she wasn’t thinking of anything besides her job. After she and Soul managed to graduate from the DWMA and Kid had taken over Lord Death’s old spot, she had been in charge of being a witch watch-out; keeping an eye on any type of hexes that may be about Death City. Maka wanted to be in charge of one of the foreign divisions, maybe somewhere in Japan? But Kid advised her to keep close to Nevada. She figured it had more to do with personal reasons rather than strictly business.
Maka hadn’t seen Crona in years. Not ever since that time on the moon. She still thinks about them from time to time. Crona. Their departure was one of the things Maka could never let go of. It wasn’t their fault, yet Maka blamed had them.
So maybe Maka lied. Maybe she always thought about them. The past, what, 6 years she would think of Crona. ‘Look up at the moon,’ she would say in her head every time she missed them, ‘and there they are.’
Maka missed them too much. The way they would try to pay attention to everyone, the way they would get bashful over any slight mistake or comment involving them, the rare smiles they gave, their lips…
‘That was only one time, it meant nothing.’ Maka thought.
But the one day she wasn’t thinking of Crona was when Crona broke through the madness? When they came back?
Soul had been sent down to the two’s house and asked her to come with him down to Kid’s office. This office was more or less just his living room. Before Lord Death passed, Kid always talked about taking up his room. Now he seemed to resent that cloudy little place.
When they arrived, Kid was on the ottoman and Liz and Patty were in the back, talking about whatever the two siblings would discuss. Maka gulped, what could be so important that she was called down here?!
“Maka, there you are. I apologize for not getting down here sooner.” Maka panicked. Why would she need to be here sooner? She let her fear settle into confusion.
“Kid, why am I here? Did something happen?” She sat down on the loveseat adjacent to where Kid was. Soul remained standing and Liz had dragged Patty off to some other part of the house. Kid looked up at Soul. “Did you tell her anything?”
“Nah, figured you’d be the best to break the news.” He replied.
“Guys, what happened? Did someone die or something?”
Kid looked confused for a moment. “No, Maka I want you to brace yourself. This is kind of a lot.” Kid crossed his legs and leaned towards my direction, laying his head on his upper wrist. She looked toward Soul, yet he looked away.
“I can handle it, I’m an adult. What happened?”
Kid let out a sigh. “It’s Crona. They’re back.”
Maka froze. Crona as in the demon sword meister? The Crona that had been fused with their weapon? The Crona that Maka cared for so deeply? She stood up at this news. “W-What?”
“I told you it was a lot.”
“How?! Isn’t it- did they- Ugh, Kid what happened?!” She plopped back onto the couch.
“Well in all honesty we aren’t quite sure. My best guess is that they found a weak spot in the madness and managed to break through.”
“Then is the madness released?!”
“Surprisingly, no. It seems intact.”
Maka wanted to scream and throw up with joy and confusion and sadness and worry and just a bunch of emotions. So many questions ran through her head. One of them weighing more than the others.
“When can I see them?” She asked, eyes growing wide with anticipation. Kid seemed to cringe at the question.
“In all honesty I’m not sure. We all know that Crona was already…” he thought of the right word, “ill when they came here. I’m not sure how the impacted trauma of the moon and being around all of the insanity has done to them. I’ll try to talk to them the next time I see them. I’d imagine they’d want to see you the most.”
Maka grinned awkwardly. Crona was back and didn’t-as Maka had worried-die on the moon. She knew that Crona had always been a bit of a nervous wreck. Medusa was a horrible mother to Crona and the way she treated them had ruined their mind. Despite that, the grip Medusa had on Crona was ridiculous. Even though that witch was an asshole, she had power over the poor thing.
“Where are they? In the dispensary?” Maka asked.
“Well actually, they’re back in the visitor room. They refused to go to the dispensary for whatever reason.” Strange. Although Crona themself was strange. Maka felt a strange emotion wave over her. Familiarity it was.
The room had been fairly quiet until that point. That was until BlackStar came hurdling in. “Hey, Kid, so Cro- oh. Maka. Hi.” He said, stopping momentarily. Maka could make out Tsubaki in the back. She waved shyly to everyone. “What’s happening here?”
Kid sighed. “What happened, Star?” He acted as if this was an everyday occurrence.
“Well Crona kinda asked for Maka to come in and I was just wondering if that was allowed or…?”
Maka didn’t wait for a response from Kid to BlackStar’s question. She got up and almost left the building until Soul had stepped in front of her. “Maka, wait a bit. They’re not in their right mind.”
“What if they need me Soul?!” She replied. “I can’t just leave them alone in there!”
“Maka…”
Kid got up and walked towards the two. “Okay, okay, listen.” BlackStar walked up behind Kid and out his arm over Kid’s shoulders. “Crona is in a very delicate spot right now. I strongly feel like we should tread lightly. Maka, you can see them. But let Soul with you.”
“You say that as if I’m gonna have to fight Crona.”
“With their current state, that may be a possibility.”
