The video opens with a pastel green backdrop that takes up the entire screen. Midoriya was sitting in the middle of the floor, his back hunching as he bends over to look at a puppy seated in his lap. The puppy looks back at Midoriya before nuzzling his cheek. He makes a muffled awe sound before he looks up at someone behind the camera.
“You know who this reminds me of?” he asks the room as he holds up the puppy. The puppy is mostly white with a brown patch over its left eye. Midoriya scratches the puppy’s ears making the puppy’s tail wag, “this little guy reminds me of my boyfriend.”
There was laughter from behind the camera before Todoroki says, “I’m nothing like a dog?” That only makes everyone laugh harder.
Midoriya grins, “admit it, Sho, you are basically a big dog.”
A sputter could be heard behind the camera before a solid green background colour interrupts the video and a cartoon dog runs across the screen chasing a tennis ball. “The Puppy Interview” appears at the top of the screen which was then replaced by “Featuring: Pro Hero Deku”. The solid background disappears as the video took over again.
“Uh hi everybody!” Midoriya flashes the camera a smile, sitting on the ground cross-legged and waves at the camera. He is wearing an All Might hoodie and bleach-washed jeans with his iconic red sneakers. “My name is Deku and I was promised puppies which is mainly why I’m here,” he claps his hands together. “Give me the puppies!”
Some people appear in-frame before dropping three puppies next to Midoriya whose eyes immediately glistened with tears and he starts having a severe case of heart-eyes. “Oh, oh no,” he whimpers and makes grabby hands to the nearest puppy. “I don’t think I’ll survive this, I mean, look at you guys,” he coos. One of the puppies jumps onto his leg and bites into his shoe. Midoriya looks at the camera as a stray tear rolls down his cheek. The other two were playing with each other.
“ Are you crying right now?” Todoroki asks in disbelief.
“They are just so cute, I can’t help it.” Midoriya looks at Todoroki behind the camera then back to the puppy, “are these puppies up for adoption?” he asks.
“Izuku no.”
“Izuku yes!”
Another voice could be heard off-screen, “how about we get to the questions.”
Is it weird having All might as your dad? Flashes across the screen.
“Wha-” Midoriya squarks, “he isn’t my dad…well…” Midoriya tilts his head and considers the question for a moment. The puppy on his lap is now chewing on his shoelaces while Midoriya runs a hand along its back. It was mostly white with a stray brown patch across its left eye, floppy ears and just the cutest little face.
“He isn’t my biological dad, he left for milk when I was 5 but I do see All Might as a father figure, and to be honest I think he sees me as his son. It is a bit weird because as a child I worshipped him but now I see him as just a normal guy even though I know he is far from normal,” he looks back down at the puppy before making eye contact with someone off-camera, “did you know he dips crackers in water because he doesn’t like them dry.”
The two puppies who were playing bump into him. One, a small corgi, fell over onto its back and started flailing while the other bounces back onto its playmate. They wrestle with one another and Midoriya snorts as he watches them roughhouse. The one in his lap didn’t have any interest in the other two and continued to play with Midoriya’s shoe.
What’s it like being the number one hero?
One puppy makes a sound of protest as the roughhousing when a bit too far for its liking. Midoriya snickers and helps separate the two by lifting the corgi and moving it onto his other side. It looks at Midoriya confused for a moment before it happily races back to the other puppy, once again starting a playfight.
“It feels strange, almost not real. As a child, I would dream about being the number one hero, helping people with a smile on my face. Then the war happened and I honestly thought I wouldn’t make it.” He looks sad for a moment before he picks up one of the dog toys laying around and dangles it in front of the fighting puppies’ snouts. They immediately start jumping around for the bone-shaped toy and Midoriya grins as he watches them. “Then the war ended and I along with the rest of my class graduated UA, next thing I knew I was climbing through the ranks until I made it to the top. I sometimes forget that I am the number one hero because to me, I’m just a normal person trying to make the world a better place.” He gives the camera a meaningful look.
A few seconds pass before the next question appears on-screen.
If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?
Todoroki puffed out a laugh, “I know the answer to this question.”
Midoriya is still petting the puppy in his lap, “if you know the answer might as well answer it for me.”
“His absolute favourite food is Katsudon, to be honest, I don’t think he would be able to live without it.”
The other puppy, a golden retriever seems to have discovered it could play with the loose fabric of Midoriya’s hoodie and was busy biting at the cuff of one of his sleeves. Midoriya didn’t seem to mind and just wiggles his fingers around, occasionally managing to pet the puppy’s head before it would try to bite his fingers instead. The corgi was still happily playing with the bone toy in front of Midoriya.
“You would probably be correct,” Midoriya hums thoughtfully before bending down towards the puppies. “Do you like katsudon?” he asks them in a baby voice, “or do you like Red Chili, that’s going to make you breathe fire afterwards, fun fact my deadbeat dad could breathe fire.” He sends the camera a sheepish look.
How do you handle a stressful mission or day?
Midoriya coughs pointedly and glances at the camera in an almost embarrassed manner. “Well, most of the time I just put on a sad movie and cry.” There was the sound of someone clearing their throat off-camera, “Oh, and Sho gives me cuddles, he even cooks for me sometimes even if he burns the food most of the time.”
Todoroki made an offended noise off-camera and Midoriya looks in the direction while trying to stifle an embarrassed laugh. He was only semi-successful. Midoriya turns to the puppy in his lap like he was expecting a reaction but all he got was a yawn. He copies it in an adorable manner before remembering he was on camera.
The golden retriever then tries jumping into his lap but the one already there yaps at it and swatted its tiny paws so the other couldn’t get up. They fought for a moment while Midoriya watches the small fight unfold with an amused expression. He leans back putting all his weight in his hands.
“Aww, are you a bit possessive?” Midoriya asks the puppy. “Do you like me that much? Do you want to keep me to yourself?” The puppy looks back at Midoriya before nuzzling his cheek. He makes a muffled awe sound before he looks up at someone behind the camera.
“You know who this reminds me of?” he asks the room as he holds up the puppy. The puppy is mostly white with a brown patch over its left eye. Midoriya scratches the puppy’s ears making the puppy’s tail wag, “this little guy reminds me of my boyfriend.”
There was laughter from behind the camera before Todoroki says, “I’m nothing like a dog?” That only makes everyone laugh harder.
Midoriya grins, “admit it, Sho, you are basically a big dog.”
A sputter could be heard behind the camera, “I am not.”
“Whenever we go out on walks you like to collect sticks and bring them home. We have a stick cemetery in our backyard.”
A grumble could be heard off-camera.
Is it difficult being an openly trans and queer pro hero?
Midoriya presses his lips together and looks at the puppy in his lap thoughtfully. “Growing up it was pretty hard, I use to get bullied a lot for being trans. It didn’t help that my quirk came in late too. I was lucky enough to have a mother who supported me all throughout my transition. Even after I socially and medically transitioned I still had teachers misgender me and deadname me. It wasn’t until I got to UA I got treated like who I was. Honestly going to UA was the best decision I ever made.” He shot Todoroki a glance before continuing, “now it doesn’t really affect me and I love being open about that because people are more accepting because of me, I get to help kids discover who they are, spread helpful information and make kids feel accepted and not broken.”
Midoriya smiles proudly, “When me and Pro Hero Shoto came out as a same-sex couple, we weren’t sure how things would play out or how the public would react. We talked about it a lot but to be honest, it was never really about being openly queer we just wanted to be out and be happy.”
Where do you buy those iconic yet ugly shoes?
“First you ask me deep stuff and then you insult my shoes?” Midoriya asks in fake offence but then smiles. He now has two puppies in his lap, the white one was still playing with his shoelaces while the golden retriever starts to chew on his hoodie strings. The corgi was still jumping around playing with the bone toy. “I’m honestly not sure Kacchan got me my first pair on my fourth birthday and every time I broke them a new pair would magically appear at my doorstep.”
“So Bakugou is the shoe fairy?” Todoroki could be heard asking off-camera.
Midoriya thought for a moment then hummed looking towards the camera, “Kacchan is so going to kill me when he finds out about this, that’s a problem for future me.”
What would a perfect date look like for you?
“Okay.” Midoriya shifts, a grin spreading across his face. “Okay, so the perfect date for me is sitting on the roof star gazing while eating strawberries and ice cream.”
“That was the first date I ever took you on.”
“Yeah, and it was perfect,” Midoriya pauses for a moment, “I also like our cuddle dates, I’m so lucky I have Sho who is a great cuddler, these puppies also give really good cuddles. I might just adopt one to cuddle with.” He bends over to kiss the puppies. “You’d like that, huh?” he asks in a baby voice. “Yes, you would, yes, yes, yes.” He smothers them in even more kisses.
What is one of your pet peeves?
Midoriya actually bursts out laughing and threw his head back. All three puppies turn to him at the sound. The golden retriever started to try and climb up his hoodie. “Yeah, I actually hate the smell of cherries, Sho actually bought me uh… what’s it called.” He frowns and snaps his fingers, the puppies following the motion attentively before pouncing onto Midoriya’s hand. Midoriya moves his hand around which the puppies try to catch.
“Cherry… Cherry Almond Softening Shampoo?” Midoriya says after a moment and sends a questioning look to someone behind the camera and then nods his head. “Yeah Cherry Almond Softening Shampoo. It would make me gag every time I used it.”
“I said I was sorry.”
Midoriya made finger guns at the camera with one hand because the other was still busy playing with the puppies, “I know but it’s still funny.”
What is one thing about you that isn't well known?
“Oh, that’s a tough one actually…” Midoriya hums, “I don’t know, what’s something people don’t know about me?” he asks and looks off-camera. There was a short pause before Todoroki’s muffled voice was heard.
“Your favourite colour is green.”
Midoriya grins, “yeah, but I feel like most people know that one.”
“You use to write All Might fan fiction.”
Midoriya makes a horrified face and screeches, “Shoto!” There was laughter from off-screen and some people were talking.
“Okay, yeah I use to write All Might fan fiction, it was back before I knew him so the writing quality wasn’t the best. It mainly themed around All Might telling you that you aren’t worthless and meant something. I think I even wrote a dad Might one where All Might was your dad.”
Midoriya shoots Todoroki a glare off-screen, “You couldn’t have thought of anything better?”
“I’m sorry babe.”
“No your not.”
“No, I’m not.”
Is there something you’d like to say to young people struggling with their sexuality or identity?
“It’s okay to be scared and it’s okay not to know and it’s also okay to adjust the more you learn about yourself. Don’t be afraid of correcting people, don’t be afraid of cutting people out of your life and never change yourself to make other people more comfortable.”
Midoriya nodded before the video cut to what seemed like an outtake. Someone was walking through the background to chase after a puppy while Midoriya continues to cuddle the one who has been sitting in his lap throughout the entire video.
“Oh Barkugou, you’re so cute!” Midoriya almost squeals and nuzzles the puppy. “Sho, babe, please can we adopt this little cutie?” He held the puppy up as to show Todoroki. The dog wags its tail happily.
“Where are we going to put it? We live in a rental and we’re not allowed pets,” came Todoroki’s voice from off-camera. He did sound like he didn’t want to admit it as he would rather bring the puppy home too.
“But look at its face! It’s so cute!” Midoriya squeals again.
“I know-”
“Come on!”
“Izuku…”
“Here, come here and hold him. I know you wanna.”
There was a moment of silence but then legs appeared in-frame and a second later Todoroki was crouching down next to Midoriya. He was wearing a white shirt and a red beanie with ripped jeans. Midoriya hands the puppy over and Todoroki held it in his arms delicately, one arm supporting it while the other ran through the soft fur.
It took all of five seconds.
“Oh…” Todoroki says softly and Midoriya smirks at the camera.
“Right?” he asks and leans in with a knowing look on his face. “So?”
Todoroki holds the puppy close and pets him gently. The puppy looks up at him and then stretched to lick at Todorki’s chin. Todoroki looked like he was about to burst into tears. “Oh no,” he croaked. “Oh no, Izuku…Izuku why are you doing this to me?” he whined. “You know I love dogs. Why are you doing this? I hate you.” The dog was still happily nuzzling Todoroki like it was his new favourite person.
Midoriya grins smugly, “good job, Barkugou,” he says towards the puppy.
“It’s so cute but…but… that is so much responsibility… I’m not ready for a child Izuku!”
Midoryia chokes on his breath and falls back with a laugh. With a wave of laughter ringing from behind the camera the video faded to black.
