Work Text:

It was midnight.

The street light flashed onto the wet pavement, making it look like someone sprinkled glitter all over the streets. Trash tumbled over and small animals scurried around into smaller darker alleys. People seem to have gone extinct, a single car hasn’t passed. Not a sound was heard except for the footsteps of two people.

“Where’s the fucking car?” Chuuya spat out while he slightly lifted his hand from the wound on his shoulder and winced, looking at it before covering it back up. Blood splatters were thrown all over him and parts of his clothes were shredded.

“It's not coming.” Dazai mumbled.

Dazai was beaten up pretty badly for a mission, there was blood trailing down the side of his forehead and all over his legs and waist. They both looked horrible.

“What do you mean it’s not comin-” Chuuya began but quickly stopped when he realized. They continued to walk under the bright moon.

They had failed the mission which meant a car wasn’t going to be waiting for them. Mori knew they would make it back alive, just liked to push their buttons. The mission was pretty simple when they were first assigned it. All the research and questioning were complete and all was left to capture two associates from a factory in the middle of nowhere. The targets were even captured but just as things were about to wrap up, Chuuya got hit with an ability that knocked him out completely, inevitably letting the victims go. They still had the ability to handle the situation even after being attacked, but something was wrong with Dazai tonight. Chuuya knew that Dazai could have saved the mission, but he still woke up to Dazai sitting in front of him covered in blood, passed out.

“Yeah.” is all Dazai responded with.

After moments of silence, suddenly Dazai went off route and went towards a building next to them. With sluggish movements, he threw himself onto the floor and against the wall. Chuuya stood still just watching his partner heavily breathe.

Any other time Chuuya would have scoffed and continued walking back home, but tonight he followed Dazai and sat next to him. He ripped a long piece of his shirt and wrapped it tightly around his shoulder. He leaned his head against the brick wall to relax. Only the sounds of Chuuya’s breath and the dripping water in the distance were heard.

Chuuya knew Dazai probably got hit with the ability too and his head was probably just as hazy as his, but he also knew there was something off about Dazai tonight. He was much more silent, didn’t insult him as much, and treated the mission like it was late work. Dazai always acted as if work was nothing but everyone knew how serious he was about it, at least Chuuya and Mori did. Something was wrong.

Chuuya turned his head to face Dazai. He stared at him for a while. His head hung low and his body looked limp, you could confuse him as a dead body.

“Chuuya.” Dazai looked up at Chuuya with a blank face. He looked broken yet so mellow. Blood, sweat, and hair covered his forehead.

“What-”

That was all Chuuya could get in before chapped lips collided with his own. There was a moment of shock, then he kissed him back. In any universe Chuuya would have thrown a fit if Dazai ever got that close to him. What is wrong tonight?

Chuuya’s hand slid into Dazai’s hair and held the side of his face with such a gentle touch that he felt Dazai melt into it. There wasn’t any eagerness behind it, they weren’t trying to obtain anything. They just kissed. It was tame and lenient. It was perfect for them.

Dazai was the first to back away. There was a moment where it seemed like nothing happened, like they were just resting before their journey back to base. Nonetheless, seconds later Dazai whipped his head back to Chuuya who stared at Dazai with confusion plastered all over his face.

Hirotsu knew of Dazai’s genuine shy nature. He knew how shy could get talking about certain things and how during conversations about the soukoku duo, Dazai tended to stay quiet and not throw insults as he was expected to. It wasn’t surprising when both of their faces jerked away from each other. Their thoughts felt like they were screaming at each other in the awkward silence that followed.

Minutes passed and they finally seemed to calm down, not daring to look in each other's direction.

“Chuuya’s a good kisser I guess, kinda reminds me of when a dog gets excited to see their owner.” is all Dazai could say, back to his normal tone of voice.

Chuuya was shocked. “Is this idiot really over it that fast?! He’s trying to tease me! ME?” is all he could think as he slowly directed his attention to Dazai, bemused. When he saw the pink tint that was painted onto Dazai’s pale cheeks, he calmed down.

“Shut up. I’m outta here.” he stated before getting up. His arm didn’t hurt anymore and Dazai had caused enough.

He was about to walk off when something tugged the hem of his shirt. “Wha-”
“If you show up to base without me Mori will make you come get me anyways, lets just… Let’s just go okay? Please?” Dazai sounded tired. For all the times Dazai has left Chuuya after using corruption, he should have shrugged him off and left.

Something held him back. “Please?” Why was Dazai so vulnerable with him? Why did he kiss him? What is he planning? He didn’t know. He wouldn’t know. He could only keep guessing. And he only had one guess. Dazai had feelings for Chuu-

With smooth movements, Dazai was quickly pulled up to his feet by his collar. “I hate you so much.”

Using the grip Chuuya had on Dazai’s collar, he yanked him towards himself. Their lips met again, already comfortable with each other. Something was definitely wrong with them tonight.

It was probably the most serene kiss any of them have ever had. It felt like an enjoyable habit they both shared. It felt like they never wanted to leave this moment. Just as Chuuya was about to go just slightly farther-

The headlights of a black sleek car came into view which caused them both to quickly pull away from each other.

“Heh.” Chuuya smirked while side-eyeing Dazai and jumped into the back seat of the car. Dazai twitched with annoyance.

They sat glued to different sides of the car the whole ride back.
