Chapter Text
The facility was massive. Standing five, maybe six miles tall. With stairs running all along inside. Some broken, some crumbling, piece by piece and others littered with a black infestation and moss. It was a disgusting sight, but wandering through this has become a normal task for Team Rainbow. And this time, Jäger was one of the operators having to wander through this ghastly infestation.
Trekking through the harsh terrain known as the Center Mall, Jäger moved through the halls as he traveled up the steps still intact. Being mindful to move silently since in this world, sound gets people killed. Loud sounds to be specific.
But this felt like a dream. A feverish dream. One Jäger saw in cartoons or comic books. Nothing like this. But here he was, in this awful world. Searching for equipment that Rainbow needs to fight back in this harsh reality. But Jäger was optimistic. So he knew that this infestation was going to be controlled and defeated one day.
Pushing past a shelf, he stepped inside a room with nothing but debris and destruction tainting the ground and walls. It was a technology type of room. Phones, computers, watches, tablets, all of it was in this room. Broken, gone, or infected with an awful goo and a horrid pungent odor.
It was awful, but this was the location. The spare equipment had to be here. If not, Rainbow might not make it through the night. Another attack would surely crumble the walls. So, he searched for what he could. And soon, he found what he needed
“Tolle!” Jäger cheered rather loudly.
So much for the element of surprise. Collecting the item, he stuffed it into his bag as he turned back towards the entrance he came through. But then he realized how late it had gotten. And in this world, nighttime was your enemy.
Why was this happening? Why now? They wouldn’t shouldn’t have ended like this…
Ever since he was young, he had always admired the little comic books about the apocalypse. He was always fascinated with them and because of that he would always bug his parents (Whenever they did visit him after dropping his ass off at his grandparents or his aunts and uncles house) But that was a long time ago
Why was he thinking about the past now?! He had a job to do damn it! Jäger shook his head as he continued to run, he needed to get this piece of equipment back to his team so they could possibly, hopefully, come up with an antidote for the damned, aka the poor souls who were unfortunate enough to get caught in the blast of a literal mad man sick of the Human race.
His lungs felt like fire. A searing pain rippled through his chest as he pressed forward with unwavering determination. It was an awful feeling. One that ripped through his chest and caused agonizing pain. But it wasn’t just his lungs that ached from the perseverance. His legs burned from the harsh overdrive he put them in. Aching and burning from the fire that erupted from inside. Screaming for it to end.
But he couldn’t stop.
Jäger couldn’t stop.
He was determined to see this mission to the end. But the eerie shrieks and horrible bowls in the distance was making him regret doing this alone. What made this even worse was the fact that he heard their movements. Their footsteps were heavy. Harsh, and rabid. Like there was no pattern. Nothing saying that it was human. He heard the clawing and hollering emitting from the bowls of their guts as those horrible monstrosity only got closer
As he ran, he did his best to avoid the open areas because the zombies when they have nothing to chase they move all slow and animated but when they get even a whiff of you then it’s game over unless you know your way around, are very flexible and fast as hell than you’ll have a sliver of a chance to make it out and away from them but if you make the mistake of looking them in their eyes, empty sockets or not, they will focus you down and will stop at nothing to get you.
Moving through the next almost too small alleyway Jäger was almost home free of getting caught but just as he was starting to relax at the sight of the big gates that led to Rainbow’s Headquarters, he heard a loud screech and that meant that the zombies had somehow seen him, though he still ran, Jäger decided to risk it and look behind himself, his stomach dropped, behind him was a new breed, this one seemed to have super hearing but it seemed sightless. This brought the attention of the other zombies to their locations, Jäger had started to turn visibly pale, turning around to face where he was going, Jäger saw that he was about 50 or so feet away from the big gates. Jäger tried to make his legs move faster, he was right there!
His heart was beating quickly. His lungs burned from the quick intakes of air. But he had to continue. He had to run faster. He was nearly there. But their shrieks and hollering got closer and closer to the point he could smell the pungent odor of decaying flesh. That awful scent of rot and searing ash. It was horrible, but Jäger was right there. It was directly in front of him. And for once, he was glad he was trained well by the GSG-9.
Due to this, his speed quickened and he was through the gates. Jumping through and watching the metal structure shut loudly behind him. Watching those disgusting half dead creatures getting locked out from the only civilization humanity knows. Panting and sagging his head a bit, Jager decided that he was done looking at the pitiful creatures and finally get back to his team so he could rest a bit. With the idea of a little rest in mind, Jäger straightened up and started moving again.
Once inside, Jäger wanted to black out and rest now that his body knew that it was safe, but he couldn’t do that just yet, he needed to get this piece of equipment back to the others and help them work out where it needs to go, what parts were useable and what parts were useless or unsalvageable.
Struggling to get his body move again, and failing to do so, Jäger called out for his friends.. His only Family left..
