Chapter Text
The sun was setting for the day, causing a golden glow to hold onto the earth for a few minutes. This was what some people referred to as the “Golden Hour”. Tends of social media stars loved taking photos with this rich lighting.
Kageyama Tobio was not one of these people.
Oikawa Tooru was one of these people.
Iwaizumi Hajime was forced to take these photos.
Kageyama was simply walking home alone with his headphones in. Obaasan had gotten him a new phone as a farewell gift, so he could now listen to music and take good quality photos.
Kageyama had split up with Hinata at the fork in the road by Coach Ukai’s store not too terribly long ago and now had to make the long trek home. He sometimes wishes he went to Aoba Josai instead of Karasuno since it was way closer to his house and Miwa often had to work late. But then he would be with his soulmate- sorry, ex-soulmates.
They rejected him. They didn’t love him and Kageyama didn’t think he could be around them again.
Plus, most of the school would call him “King” or “King of the Court”. Kageyama wasn’t sure if he would be able to handle that as well.
No, not after that breakdown over the summer. But that breakdown did give him his sister again.
Kageyama’s parents were travelers, and they knew they couldn’t raise children on the road so they gave a five-year-old Miwa and a newborn baby Tobio to his dad’s parents. Just left the two on the doorstep and never came back.
Ojiisan and Obaasan filed for legal custody of the two when their parents showed up late in court and talked about how the two never wanted kids. They were automatically granted custody while Kageyama's parents were thrown in jail for child endangerment and child neglect after seeing how skinny Miwa was.
Kageyama was lost in thought while listening to his music; he never saw the body coming around a corner.
Smack
Kageyama fell to the ground while feeling the wind get knocked out of him. When he looked up he thought he saw an angel? No wait, that was Oikawa.
Was Oikawa an angel or a devil in disguise?
The golden glow seemed to bring out his sharp elegant face structure and gave him an unrealistic look. Almost like an angel. His chocolate brown hair went well with his matching brown eyes. Oikawa was wearing a baby blue sweater with a white teddy bear and a white-collar underneath it along with matching white pants, long white Nike socks, and baby blue converse.
Oikawa’s eyebrows were castrated down as he reached out a hand. His eyelashes long against the pale skin of his upper eyelid. Soft thick lips gave him a soft smile that seemed private unlike his usual smirks and charming smiles.
“Are you oka- Tobio-Chan?”
“Uh, um Hi,” Kageyama stuttered out before taking the hand given. He didn’t like that of all the people he had to run into, it was them. He felt bad if he didn’t accept their help, however, Suga-San’s been helping him with that. He didn’t want to disappoint Suga-San.
Oikawa bent down and grabbed Kageyama’s backpack before handing it to Kageyama, “Here. You dropped this.”
“Oh, thank you Oikawa-San, Hello Iwaizumi-San,” Kageyama greeted the boy as he came into view. His tan skin and large bisects came into view and he raised a hand to wave at Kageyama. His form-fitting hoodie seemed fitting on such a cold day however it did little to hit his muscle mass.
“Hello, Kageyama-Kun. How have you been,” Iwaizumi asked the boy who was still in his gym shirt but added the Karasuno team sweats and zips up.
“Okay. How have you been?”
“I’ve been doing alrighty, shittykawas still shitty.”
They both ignored the squawk Oikawa let loose along with a loud yelling of “Mean Iwa-Chan!”
“So, where are you headed so late, Kageyama-Kun?”
“Oh um home?” Kageyama's voice made that statement more of a question. His head slightly leaned over as he was confused.
“You're so cute, Tobio-Chan! But why was that a question?”
“Oh um well I’m headed home,” Kageyama was starting to get uncomfortable with the attention his ex-soulmates were giving him. He wasn’t used to it. He would never admit that he was internally happy with the attention.
“Would you mind if we walked you home?” Iwaizumi asked.
“Oh if you don’t have any plans. I don’t want you to cancel anything for me,” Kageyama said, intelligently.
“We don’t,” Iwaizumi said before Oikawa could complain about his photos.
So Kageyama started walking to his sister's small house. It’s where he was staying until he graduated. It was small but homey. There was a shop right next door to it that his sister bought with the last bit of money their Ojiisan had given her. The money he gave Kageyama was sitting in a safe, not to be touched until he graduated high school.
The salon had two stories, the bottom part was used to cut hair while the top part was just to store equipment but still had a room that was being unused. So when Tobio told Miwa that he wanted to continue to learn the Piano and Ballet she hired some people to make the top part of his little studio. It had a small dance floor along with a piano in the corner.
Miwa rented it out on weekends to dance instructors and Tobio, no matter the age gap or skill level, always attended. Whether it was to play piano or learn more about dance. He always enjoyed it and could never complain.
Now the salon portion was small, but all the space the two workers needed, his sister and her soulmate that she met in high school. A platinum blonde, almost silver, a haired girl named Haiba Alisa but Kageyama called her Alisa-Nee.
Alisa-Nee’s parents were famous ice skaters while her younger brother was into volleyball like Tobio. She wanted a life without all the fame so she moved to Tokyo with her brother where she met Miwa through a club. Kageyama forgot the club, it never really impacted his life much, all he knew was for hair.
The two became fast friends and eventually soulmates and soon went to college with each other. Miwa, right after finishing a degree in both business and cosmetology. Alisa only got one in cosmetology.
Miwa moved back home when Obaasan died to help Oijisan, but he felt lost without his soulmate and ended up passing a month afterward. Since Kageyama hadn’t even started high school then she talked to a lawyer friend from college and made herself his guardian.
Now Miwa could have been making more money working in the city, but people out in small-town Miyagi Prefecture, Tohoku Region, still needed haircuts and dyed hair. So she never really complained. Neither did Alisa.
Alisa often took weekends off to see her family and younger brother and took days off to go see her family’s sporting events, which Miwa allowed. Who was she to stop that when she did the same thing. So Miwa made it to where you had to have an appointment to get your hair done, walk-ins weren’t allowed.
Kageyama paused his music as the two-third years made a point to keep him in the conversation.
“Kageyama-Kun,” Iwazumi wondered as they headed to a four-way crosswalk, “Isn’t your house that way.”
Kageyama looked over to see Iwaizumi pointing to the right, towards Aoba Josai.
“Oh no. I live with Miwa-Nee now,” Kageyama said bluntly as he walked towards the left.
Oikawa stared at the boy's blunt words before chasing after him, “Tobio-Chan. What do you mean you live with ‘Miwa-Nee’?”
“That I live with Miwa-Nee,” Kageyama answered truthfully, ignorant to the two stares he was receiving from his ex-soulmates.
‘Stop it. They are not your soulmates. They are your senpais.’ Kageyama mentally scolded himself.
“Why don’t you live with your parents,” Iwaizumi asked.
“Kinda hard to.”
“Why is that Tobio-Chan?”
“They’re in jail.”
“Tobio-Chan! I- why are you so blunt?”
“I’m… blunt?”
“Yes, Kageyama-Kun. Very much so.”
“Oh.”
“It’s not a bad thing,” Iwaizumi whispered in his ear.
“Okay.”
“So you live with your sister,” Oikawa asked.
“Yes, but why do you want to know?”
“I want to get to know you,” Oikawa said truthfully.
“But why?”
“Cause we want to know you.”
“But why?”
“Because you're our soulmate.”
“But wh- no I’m not.”
“Yes, you are Tobio-Chan.”
“No. Not after you said I wasn’t,” Kageyama was getting annoyed with these two now.
“Tobio-Chan. I’m not being your soulmate. I want you to put up a wall because there is no room in this relationship for you. And there never will be. You are an insufferable annoying little brat. I hate you! I Hate You! I HATE YOU!” Oikawa yelled out.
Kageyama felt his world crack before he looked up at Iwaizumi, “I agree with Oikawa to a degree. I don’t see how you are supposed to fit in with us and I think fate made an accident.”
“No fate didn’t make an accident. It made a mistake. And not some happy little mistake a screw over just like you!”
“Oikawa! Calm down.”
“No! He’s so ugh and I hate him so much!”
“Look,” Iwaizumi started, “We’re sorry. I- I was dumb and so was Oikawa. We never meant to hurt you. It was just scared I guess. Adding a new person into our relationship after we had been soulmates for years. It was foreign, new, and different and we were young, dumb, and just stupid. We are so sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Kageyama blinked at him, anger thick in his voice, “I’m not going to forgive you like that. You made it very clear that I wasn’t a part of your relationship.”
“We understand Tobio-Chan. Just can we do anything to help you forgive us?”
“Oh uh, I’m not sure. I don’t think anything really can make me forgive you. It doesn’t work like that.”
“What about a date! We take you on a date so you meet the real us and not the senpai us?”
“That makes no sense Oikawa-San.”
“What Crappykawa is trying to say is let us take you somewhere, like a cafe or movie, so we can get to know you better and you get to know us,” Iwazumi explained.
“I don’t think I’m ready for that. Now if you will excuse me,” Kageyama turned down a side street that he knew would take him to the back of the salon, and ran.
“Tobio-Chan! Wait,” Kageyama heard Oikawa yell, but he just wasn't in the mood to deal with those two anymore.
So he kept running until he saw the familiar door and turned into it. He honestly had to thank his daily races against Hinata for making him fast enough to outrun Iwaizumi and Oikawa.
“Tobio?”
“Hi, Miwa-Nee. I’m going to head to the studio upstairs.”
“Alright.”
Tobio walked upstairs and found his second gym bag. Now he could dance or play the piano right now but he wasn’t sure which he wanted to do.
“Hmm, I have that international competition in Russia for ballet in a few weeks to be able to get into that camp with the famous Lilia Baranovskaya. But I also have that piano concert and with the rumors that Kosei is supposed to be returning to the game in Tokyo. Now what are the dates for these events,” Kageyama wondered as he looked onto his phone.
The piano one was three weeks away while the dance event was two months away. If he won at least third place with the competition in piano he would be competing for All of Japan. Kosei, since he hasn’t been in the game for a while, would need to run a few more events to make it as the fourth lucky contender.
“Hmm, so Piano first. Oh, this event is freestyle but needs to be under 5 minutes,” Kageyama said as he looked at the online rule book.
Kageyama tested the keys and looked at the old book his Obaasan had given him of pieces she composed but never made official for the public. Never thought they were good enough.
“Let’s see here,” Kageyama pulled the book down off the floor and flipped through.
That was until something caught his eye, “Fly High”
Kageyama played the keys and found he liked the piece. It reminded him of Hinata, but it wasn’t what he wanted. Maybe to dance to but not play. The difficulty wasn’t high enough.
A voice popped into the studio, “Tobioskey!”
“Hi Alisa-Nee, what can I help you with?”
“You seem to be lost,” She admitted, “The music is more emotional than usual.”
“I have a piano competition in a few days and the genre is freestyle. Most people would do Beethoven, Chapin, or Mozart. I wanted something free but with that level of difficulty maybe even higher,” Kageyama admitted.
“Hmm, I know a song but I would need to talk to my dad to get the sheet music. How would you feel about playing an Ice Skating piece?”
“If it gives me the win I’ll take it.”
“That’s the Tobioskey I know!”
“Did you have to make my name Russian?”
“Of course! It’s just so cute!”
Kageyama sighed, “If you say so.”
“Now let me make a phone call. Oo you could finally talk to them!”
“I don’t think that's a goo-”
“Shhh, just talk to them! My dads are super to get along with.”
“Oh… Okay.”
Alisa walked more into the room and towards Tobio who was sitting on the bench of the piano. Her phone seemed to magically appear in her hand and she clicked some buttons before a ringing was heard.
Ring
Ring
Rin-
“Alisa!”
“Dad!”
“How are you, my baby?”
“Good. I am here with Tobioskey and he is competing in a piano competition in?”
“3 weeks Alisa-Nee,” Tobio answered.
“3 weeks wow that’s pretty close.”
“I found out what we are playing today, however. It’s freestyle so most people play it safe with the classical artist but I wanted something different.”
“That makes sense. I have a few pieces that may work if not I can talk to Lilia.”
“Lilia? As in Lilia Baranovskaya?”
“Oh, I take it, you know her?”
“How could I not! She’s the best dancer to ever exist. I was planning on attending her camp in a few months but I have to submit a video and get a written note that proves I’m at that level but I’m mainly self-taught ever since Obaasan died.”
“Yuuri! What does obaasan mean?”
“It means Grandma in Japanese. Why?”
“Oh, I’m on the phone with the infamous Tobioskey.”
“Miwa-Chan’s little brother?”
“Yup!”
“Hello, Tobio-Kun.”
“Uh hello?”
“My name is Katsuki Yuuri but feel free to call me Yuuri. Who you were talking to is my idiotic husband Viktor.”
“Hello, Yuuri-Kun.”
“Now what’s going on?”
“I need a piece for a piano competition and Alisa-Chan said you two could help me before Viktor mentioned Lilia Baranovskaya!”
“Ahh Ballet?”
“Mmh. I love dancing and find that the Bolshoi Ballet has an incredible way of showing that! Like just the way the dancer’s dance is incredible and I want to learn how to do that.”
“Who was or is your teacher?”
“Ahh my Obaasan, Kageyama Akane.”
“Holy shit. I’m so sorry about your loss, the whole community was probably in tears that day.”
“Thank you Yuuri-Kun.”
“It’s no problem at all. Now I think I may be able to recommend you along with Yuri Plisetsky.”
“Yuri Plistesky! That was Baranovskaya-San’s only personal student!”
“You seem to know your stuff, Tobio-Kun.”
“It’s hard not to when it’s the Baranovskaya-San!”
“That is true. Now for your piece, what level of difficulty?”
“The harder the better.”
“Hmm I’ll have to talk with Lilia about that but I have an idea. I can email it to Alisa by the end of the day tomorrow. Would that work?”
“It would! Thank you so much Yuuri-Kun!”
“Your welcome Tobio-Kun.”
“Lev! Your sisters on the phone,” Yuuri’s voice yelled.
“Alisa-Nee!”
Alisa started walking out of the room with a small wave, “Levochka! How are you?”
The door to the studio shut with that and Kageyama started to run his fingers over the piano before playing a quick yet somewhat easy piece to stay in practice. He wasn’t going to dance tonight as he had morning practice tomorrow and it was already later than he would have liked to start since he ran into Oikawa and Iwaizumi and talked to Yuuri-Kun and Viktor-San.
After playing for thirty minutes Kageyama went downstairs to start dinner for the night. It was his night to cook for Miwa and Alisa since Alisa also lived here unless she was in Tokyo with her family. It just worked better.
As the stars slowly started to come out, Kageyama smiled at his newfound family. Alisa lightly scolds him for not doing homework while Miwa snickered in the background.
Let’s say that the next day his teachers were shocked when his homework was completed and turned in for once.
