Work Text:

Being a good person means you are also a good child. A good child entails living with filial piety at all times. They said living with this principle could be the basis of one’s moral conduct and social harmony...but it could also be none of those things. Because that very principle brought these two people to meet at a not-so-ideal circumstance which eventually turned out to be a big part of their lives.

Haknyeon is an only child. Both his parents are businessmen, therefore he is expected to be one as well. He landed an office job on his journey all the way there, the reason being he didn’t really want to go into this path, and he just wanted to stall time until he figured out what to do. Said parents were obviously disappointed with their son’s life decisions but they surprisingly did not bother much. Weird. Too weird indeed. One would expect parents who devoted so much effort into raising their child to be a businessman, even exhausting connections just to get him into one of the prestigious business schools, would do anything to salvage their sacrifices. But Haknyeon’s parents let him be. For two years, he had his peace. But just as he was entering his third year of “life gap”, something finally happened.

He knew it was too good to be true that his parents would just let their dreams go. They most certainly did not. In those two years Haknyeon spent trying to find himself, his parents were plotting their next move as well.

The ultimate level of fury is the one that is silent. Too peaceful, too quiet that it might pop one’s ears off. That was what Haknyeon felt as he was presented with his consequence.

“You are getting married.” They said.

Nothing more followed after that. There was no place for argument or even queries in the first place. His parents just came, dropped the bomb, and left him to deal with it on his own. The silent explosion was too loud it deafened Haknyeon’s ears.

In goes Kim Sunwoo into his life. One day, Haknyeon was just a mere employee in an office district downtown, but the next day he was marrying the son and only heir of a big known company faster than the speed of light. The two of them were arranged by their parents to be married as the “guarantee” of both parties in their business partnership. Apparently, the two companies–each owned by their respective parents–merged into one. And the two of them served as a living reminder that one cannot sabotage the other or both their sons’ future will be at stake. To Haknyeon, it was completely unnecessary to go through such lengths just for assurance but he couldn’t argue anyway.

They met once before the deal set off. Their parents booked a private room in a fancy restaurant Haknyeon had never heard of. Honestly, some part of Haknyeon wished it was just an exaggerated version of his consequence so he didn’t bother dressing up. But the moment the waitress slid the door open to their room, he wished he could have worn a nice polo at least. Sunwoo’s family was waiting for them when they arrived. His parents eyed him from head to toe and Haknyeon shrank in his spot, suddenly feeling so anxious about the attention he’s getting.

They were seated, both families on each side with Haknyeon directly across the other son. He tried to take a good look at him but could only manage a few glances in the fear of getting caught. He focused on his plate instead and wished time would fly faster. During the whole dinner, only their parents were talking and the two remained awfully silent. Finally, Sunwoo’s mother spoke directly towards the both of them.

“Haknyeon dear, would you mind introducing yourself to us?” She said with a small smile. Her diamond earrings glinted at Haknyeon like it was saying hi.

Haknyeon felt his ears turn red and he took a sideways glance to his mother for help. She only nodded and urged him to do as told.

“U-um…I’m Haknyeon…” He began, clearly not knowing what to do or say. What would they want to know? For sure they know everything about him and his ancestors by now. Why would he need to introduce himself? His mind blanked, trying to catch words to say.

The boy in front of him sighed and placed his hands on the table.  “ Eomma , must we really do this? I think it’s enough. We met already just like you wanted.”

The whole table was startled by what Sunwoo just said. His mother’s mouth opened and closed, trying to find words to say to him but he was already standing up from his seat before she could even reply.

He walked away from the table. “We’re done here right?”

Sunwoo. ” His mother hissed.

A shadow fell in front of Haknyeon’s bowed head, making him look up from the table.

“You’re done right? Let’s go. I’ll take you home.” Sunwoo said as he stood by Haknyeon, waiting for his reply. It was the first time Haknyeon had a good look at him and somehow he couldn’t start to describe how he appeared to him. He was wearing a white, neatly ironed long-sleeve polo shirt with his black blazer unbuttoned, like he came right from work. His eyes, which were purposely avoiding Haknyeon’s the whole dinner, was now looking straight into his like they already shared a conversation. Sunwoo tilted his head at Haknyeon, making the latter realize that he was staring.

“O-oh um..” He turned to look back to his parents, then to Sunwoo’s, and the thought of being left behind alone with them scared him so he stood up as well. Sunwoo gave him a small nod before turning back to their table.

“We’ll be going now,” He said. All he got was looks of surprise before he turned and walked out the door without waiting for Haknyeon.

“Thank you for the meal,” Haknyeon quickly said, bowing down to the elders with heated cheeks before going after Sunwoo.

When they were seated in the car, Sunwoo turned to him with hands on the steering wheel. “Where do I take you?”

Haknyeon gave him directions to his apartment and remained silent once again. His head was starting to go haywire as it slowly settled in him that what was going to happen is real. It was real and he’s starting to feel everything all at once. He’s going to get married. He’s going to marry a person he just met. He’s going to make a bond with someone he doesn’t entirely know. He’s going to spend the rest of his lifetime being tied down to the consequence of his selfish decisions. If only he hadn’t been so stubborn with that dream of his, if only he followed what his parents wanted, it wouldn’t have ended up like this. It wouldn’t come to a point where it would be so hard to reverse or undo. In those two years of freedom, he started envisioning his own life, having his own choices, his own decisions, maybe even his own goals, but suddenly it was drowned by this. He took great risks only for it to backfire. It rang so loud in his ears.

“I’m sorry!” He blurted out, eyes closed shut.

Sunwoo jolted a bit from his outburst and felt the car swerve a bit. “What? Why, what’s wrong?” He asked, eyeing Haknyeon on the side.

Haknyeon buried his face in his palms and started sobbing. The stress and guilt finally caught up to him, and having Sunwoo beside him only made things worse. His mere presence reminded him of everything that went wrong.

“I feel so bad, it’s all my fault. It’s all my fault.” He cried into his palms. He felt like the most useless human being currently alive. If only he can disappear into thin air. “Please drop me off the station. I don’t want to go home anymore.”

The car slowed down until it stopped on the sidewalk. He felt a hand tug his own away from his face but he struggled against it.

“Don’t. Please just dri—no nevermind, I’ll…” Haknyeon removed his hands from his face and went to unlock his door instead.

“Wai—hey! Where are you going?!” Sunwoo called after him. Haknyeon managed to unbuckle his seatbelt and slid out of the car. He hadn’t even gone a few steps before Sunwoo was dragging him back to the car.

“Let me go, ” Haknyeon said, crumpling down the sidewalk with his back against the car. He continued sobbing with his head buried in his arms.

Sunwoo crouched down in front of him but this time, he didn’t try to hold him anymore. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m sorry,” Haknyeon whispered. “I’m really sorry.”

“What are you saying sorry for?”

“This whole mess. It’s because of me.”

“How is it all because of you?”

“My parents are punishing me for not being what they wanted me to be. And now I dragged you into it as well. I’m really sorry .” Haknyeon said all this into his arms, without looking up at the person he’s talking to. He couldn’t do so.

Sunwoo sighed and shifted on his legs. “Maybe before you claim all the blame you should know I am responsible for this too,” He said.

Haknyeon stopped sobbing at that and he finally looked up to Sunwoo, eyes all swollen and red. “You are? How?”

“It’s a long story but basically I fucked up the company a little too bad than they could tolerate. This is to make up for my incompetence. And save the company.”

“So you’re saying…”

“Yes. We’re both the cause of this trouble. So don’t go taking all the blame and crying yourself dry like this.” He reached into his pocket and handed Haknyeon a handkerchief. Haknyeon took it, it was neatly folded and it smelled so good. Just right out of laundry. Too bad he’s going to put his tears and snot all over it.

Sunwoo waited until Haknyeon had calmed down before speaking. “But you know, nothing’s too bad if you have a plan.”

“What do you mean?” Haknyeon asked.

“What I mean is, we can give our parents what they want. They want to punish us like this? Go ahead. We’ll get married. But they do not have any more control on what goes beyond it.”

“Are you saying—”

“How about we make a deal?” Sunwoo said, a smile playing on his lips. “We get this done and over with so we can check it off our list. But to make things easier, we can agree on some things.”

Haknyeon remained silent, waiting for him to continue.

“One, we won’t be living together. Two, your friends and mine don’t need to know a thing. Three, we will only pretend in front of our parents. Four, we are basically allowed to do anything we want just like before we get married.”

Haknyeon nodded. “That sounds…okay I guess.”

“Okay? Come on, it’s more than okay.” Sunwoo motioned his hand around the air. “By doing this, we can buy time to plan for things we really want without them knowing. Right? And we can work with the divorce in secret too. So when everything is settled, we can cut it off and end this once and for all.”

Haknyeon snorted at him, finally forming a small curve on his lips. “You seem to have everything planned out then,” He commented. “You really think we can pull this off?”

Sunwoo pursed his lips. His hands automatically reached down to his pocket and pulled out his phone. He took a look at the screen and nodded. “Yeah we can. We must.” Haknyeon watched as Sunwoo stared at his lockscreen for a few more seconds before pocketing it. “You just need the drive. I know mine.”

“Someone waiting for you?” Haknyeon guessed, eyeing his phone.

“No, not really.” Sunwoo said, but his voice seemed excited now that they’re talking about it. “I’m still in the process. Needs a little bit more time. That’s why I’m hoping we can finish all this before that happens.”

Haknyeon exhaled, stretching up his legs. “Alright then.” He said. Sunwoo stood up too and gave him a nod.

“Alright. Now let’s get you home. We have a wedding to attend tomorrow.”

Their marriage didn’t seem so bad with both sides having the same goal in mind. Sunwoo was still set with his plan and Haknyeon just easily let him do what he wanted. It had been a fast eighteen months since they had that simple and private ceremony. The two of them got married in something which looked like an office, in front of a judge, nothing out of the ordinary. They were made to sign papers, just legal documents and stuff Haknyeon couldn’t begin to comprehend. No one else was there except for their parents who smiled at them the whole time. Then they made each other wear rings which ended up getting stored deep in their respective closets once they got home.

Haknyeon had always been so kind and understanding. Maybe that’s why he couldn’t hold a grudge against any of the elders who put him into this situation. Eventually, he found himself getting close to Sunwoo’s mother as they both share the same interest in baking.

Sunwoo was a very busy person. Aside from his demanding job which frequently required him to stress his white hairs out, he also had way too many friends and hobbies. In his free time, he does every other thing he could fit into his schedule. Hang out with friends, play sports, long drives, dinner parties…going on dates . But the last one was buried deep into both of them as the most important secret they must keep. His parents knew how Sunwoo was from the very beginning, that's why they never questioned why he didn’t always appear by Haknyeon’s side. It was a relief and a burden less off of their shoulders.

One afternoon, Haknyeon came by Sunwoo’s parents’ house to help his mother bake some pastries for her friends who would be coming together in the evening. It was also the day Haknyeon could take his time off work early because there’s nothing left to do, having done everything off his list for the week. He wasn’t really the type to get the office to grant all of his wishes, but his boss did drop him a heavy workload enough to last until the end of the week. Little did she know, Haknyeon would do anything for a day off. So for three consecutive days, he worked overtime just to quicken his pace. It’s not like he’s in a hurry to get home anyway. Plus a whole day off is better than going home early the whole week. There’s nothing much he can do in the afternoon onwards.

Before he came to help, he managed to accomplish quite a task. He cleaned his apartment, changed everything—from his sheets, to the curtains, carpets and throw pillows. He had it handed off to the laundry shop downstairs instead of using all his time washing all of it. He also managed to get his groceries and drop by a cafe to have a small chat with Chanhee.

Chanhee was his best friend, the only one in the office that he could hang out with. But he’s currently destined to a branch out of town for several months so Haknyeon now has to deal with his boring work alone. Still, it was nice to catch up like this every once in a while.

“I’d love for Sunwoo to have some while they’re warm, but I have to set the place up before they arrive.” His mother-in-law said.

“Oh don’t worry, I can bring it to him.” Haknyeon offered.

And that’s how he ended up in Sunwoo’s office only to be stopped by his secretary at the door.

“I just have to give this to him,” Haknyeon said, raising the box he was holding.

“Mr. Kim is currently in a meeting, Sir. I’m sorry but he can’t meet you right now.”

“Is that so…” Haknyeon mumbled. So much for having it warm. “Alright. I’ll just leave this to you. Can you please give it to him when he arrives?”

“Alright Sir. Who do I tell him it’s from?”

“Uh..” He racked his brain. What does he call him again? “Just tell him it’s from Ju. He’ll know that.”

With that, another thing checked off his list.

He was lounging on his sofa around dinner time that day. He was too tired. A day off didn’t really feel like a day off but it’s nice to do things other than work. He was about to doze off when his phone buzzed on the table.

It was their office group chat.

Don’t forget team dinner @ 7pm! Everyone is highly encouraged to attend. Boss says she has something to announce.

Haknyeon groaned loudly, throwing a pillow on the floor. He was feeling too lazy and tired and all he wanted to do now is sleep but…for sure everyone would be there. And it would make him look rude if he’s the only one who didn’t show up. After another groan, he finally stood up and went to his room to change.

Their team dinner was held in a nearby barbecue grill from their office. Upon arriving at the entrance, Haknyeon still contemplated whether to turn back and go home instead. But a colleague saw him hesitating by the door so she raised her hand and called him.

“Haknyeon over here!” called Ashley. She stood up from her chair raising a glass of what looked like beer to him. “Come here come here!”

Haknyeon went to sit on the empty chair at the table and mumbled his silent greetings to everyone. He looked around and saw their table almost complete. There’s Ashley, Dara, Hyungmin, and Lee on the table. At the far end sat their boss, Ms. Yoo. Not long after, the two remaining seats were filled as Chanseol and Lin arrived.

“We’re complete now, right Ashley?” Ms. Yoo asked. Ashley hummed in reply as she busied herself typing on her phone.

“Yeah we are Ms. Yoo. Go ahead.” Although it wasn’t how one was supposed to talk to one’s boss, by now they were all used to it. Ashley isn’t really one for nice words and formalities. It’s just her personality—she says and acts however she wants. But the rest all understand though, she’s still nice and at least she gets her job done. She’s actually pretty good with her job. With that, Ms. Yoo called a waiter to come over as each one of them ordered. The night went on just like every other team dinner they had. Ashley and Hyungmin are usually the noisiest ones on the table with their loud conversation and hilarious stories that they can’t seem to run out of. Chanseol and Lin, who obviously looked like they’re a couple but would never admit it, were hunched over their phones watching something funny from Tiktok. Among the others at the table, Haknyeon liked Dara the most because she’s almost just like him. Quiet and introverted. But now she’s having a conversation with Ms. Yoo so Haknyeon had no choice but to focus on his food instead.

As if on cue, his phone buzzed giving him something else to do.

you came here?

Haknyeon chewed on his food as he rolled his eyes. This man never really says Hi.

yep. couldn’t wait for u, i have other errands. He replied back. He was about to flip his phone down on the table as that was usually how his conversations went with Sunwoo—just short and simple—but it buzzed again to Haknyeon’s surprise.

where are you?

im at a team dinner near my office. Haknyeon typed, looking around to see the name of the restaurant before typing it on his reply as well. why what do u want?

nothing. i’ll just pick you up after. in exchange for the pastries.

Haknyeon tried to pop the bubbly feeling he was starting to get. His body always reacts this way like clockwork even with just the slightest act of kindness Sunwoo shows him. It’s not that he’s mean and doing good deeds comes once in a blue moon. It’s just that he’s so…himself. So Sunwoo. Like how his face is usually in a scowl, how he blanks out when bored, how he likes word battling with Haknyeon and making him lose all the time, how he feeds off from all that teasing and pretend-hatred towards Haknyeon. But even after all that, he’s still kind. And thoughtful and practical and serious when things need him to be. That’s why Haknyeon hated it. He hated this feeling, this slow start of something changing with the way he sees him. What they have was bound to end before they even started this and they both knew that. It just sucks, really—that Haknyeon had to stop himself from liking his own husband. Not that he could confidently call him that anyway.

He was getting disturbed by his thoughts so he stood up and excused himself to the bathroom for a while.

Splashing his face with cold water helped tone down the heat that was starting to creep up his cheeks. A break from the social crowd was much appreciated too, so he took his time washing his hands by the sink. He heard the door of the restroom creak open but he didn’t turn and continued with his business. Just as he was about to finish, he felt a body slam against his back, making him tip over to the sink.

Ow –what..”

He looked over his shoulder and saw a man swaying behind him with his head down. Haknyeon held the man’s shoulders to stop him from swaying as well as to put space between them.

“Lee? Are you okay?” He asked, noticing it was his colleague. The man grumbled an incoherent reply. He’s leaning most of his body weight on Haknyeon’s arms making it a struggle to hold him still. “Can you stand up?”

Lee continued swaying and Haknyeon repeated himself until he noticed he was slowly getting pushed. He was intentionally being pushed so he tried to go against the force but his back hit the cold bathroom wall instead.

“What are you doing?” Haknyeon asked, slowly getting alarmed. Lee’s hands rose up and made their way to the side of Haknyeon’s torso. Haknyeon tried to peel it off but the other man was stronger. “Are you drunk?!”

The hands on his waist gripped tightly like he wanted to claw Haknyeon’s flesh out. Then it immediately moved down to his behind and squeezed it. Haknyeon jolted at the unwanted touch and his instinct kicked in, making himself push Lee hard and away from him. His hands started shaking and his eyes stared wide back to the man in front of him, horrified. He was speechless. He didn’t know what just happened, he didn’t know what to say.

Lee stumbled back a few steps then rolled his head around lazily. He opened his eyes on the ceiling before it dropped back to watch Haknyeon’s reaction.

“Ah shibal . I need a smoke.” Lee grumbled, before smirking and brazenly walked out of the bathroom.

Haknyeon couldn't sit still on his seat back at the team dinner table. He wanted so much to get out of here and the stares he'd been getting from across the table—from that pervert—is not helping him one bit. Besides, he didn’t know what to do. Tell the others about it? Would they believe him? Would they think he’s overreacting? And the main agenda of the dinner hadn’t been touched yet. He would ruin the mood for what it is that Ms. Yoo had to announce. He looked around the table once again and saw that everyone was having a good time. It isn't fair to bring it up to them. What matters is nothing else happened, nothing worse . But God Haknyeon was scared.

It seemed like the night could only get worse.

After everyone had finished their meals and were having their drinks, Ms. Yoo finally decided to announce the big news. With a big smile on her face, she looked directly at Haknyeon and told him he was promoted.

Everyone on the table cheered except for two but they were all oblivious to the tension between them. Haknyeon tried to force a smile as he thanked everyone who congratulated him but under the table, his legs were still shaking. Inside his chest, his heart was still pounding.

By the time they parted ways, Haknyeon’s fright turned into rage and he was so mad about what happened. He was mad too because he couldn't enjoy his achievement thanks to his deranged colleague. He was the first one to leave, excusing himself by telling them he was exhausted. They didn’t seem to mind, and Haknyeon just really wanted to get out of the place. He couldn’t imagine how he stomached staying a few more hours on the same table after what had happened.

But as he walked outside, he replayed the whole dinner in his head and realized Lee acted as if nothing happened. It’s either he’s good at hiding it or his head got knocked somewhere and he couldn’t remember what he did.

He watched with arms folded on his chest as a black car slowed down in front of him. The window near him rolled down.  “Why didn’t you text me earlier so you didn’t have to wait out here?” Sunwoo greeted.

“Hi to you too,” Haknyeon grumbled. He opened the car door and sat inside the passenger seat. He buckled his seatbelt and looked back at the man on the wheel. “Why aren’t we moving yet?”

Sunwoo was staring at him wordlessly. Then he tilted his head to the side with a sigh but still pretty much staring at Haknyeon nonetheless.

What , Kim Sunwoo?” Haknyeon asked, starting to get irritated. He really wanted to bury himself in his bed right now.

“You’re not going to tell me?”

“Tell you what?”

“Why you’re like that?”

“Like what?”

Sunwoo shook his head. He definitely knew something was up. “Well for starters, you would usually tell me everything about your day. Even before the moment you get in the car, you would’ve been talking non-stop already.” He said. He searched Haknyeon’s eyes but the latter refused to make eye contact. “What happened?”

“For the record. I don’t tell you everything, Kim.” Haknyeon argued. He ignored Sunwoo’s question and hoped he wouldn’t pry anymore. “Please just take me home,” He whispered. He rested his head on the window and closed his eyes without another word.

A few seconds later, he heard the sound of the handbrake clicking and the car started moving without any more questions asked.

A few weeks managed to pass by uneventfully aside from Haknyeon navigating his way in his new position in the office. Although this was not the career he wanted, he still made sure to give his best in his work. It still felt surreal to have people submitting reports to him and him actually having the authority to demand deadlines, but it’s growing on him. Ms. Yoo looked proud of him which made his heart swell.

But one thing that didn’t go away along with his previous position was his overtime habits. One of the people in their department, Lee , had been absent for almost four consecutive days now and Haknyeon had to make up for it. Of course he could ask the others to handle it but they already did so much this week and they all have other responsibilities too. If someone were to ask him about it, Haknyeon would say he had none. Aside from cleaning his apartment then cleaning it all over again afterwards.

“Not going home yet?” Ashley knocked on his work desk. Haknyeon looked up and saw her carrying her purse and coat already.

“Almost. You can go ahead.” He answered.

“You know, this sorta feels awkward. I hope you go home earlier than me sometimes.”

Haknyeon gave her a small smile. “Keep safe,” He said.

Ashley waved a hand at him before walking down the corridor to the elevators.

And once again, Haknyeon was left alone typing into his computer.

After an hour, Haknyeon shut the computer down and prepared to leave. One look at his desk showed him the time. 8:45pm. The task took a little longer than he expected. He estimated a maximum of two hours overtime but apparently it wasn’t enough. There’s no point in dwelling though, what mattered was him right now, finally walking down the sidewalk on his way home.

Haknyeon didn’t have a car. It was not because he couldn’t afford one but he was just scared to drive so he never really bothered getting one. But at times like this, it made him wonder if all of it was worth it. Commuting at night and squeezing himself with a bunch of other people coming home from work, then walking from the station to his apartment complex. There are times when Sunwoo would offer him a ride home, either because he was coming from a nearby meeting or an errand, and Haknyeon was honestly grateful for that. Right now though, as his legs complained and his neck hurt, he wished Sunwoo had a nearby meeting too. But he doesn’t. He has a date. So there’s absolutely a 0% chance of a ride.

Although some might think the two of them haven’t been married for long, for them those months were already long enough. It was also long enough for Haknyeon to know almost everything about Sunwoo. Those that the latter allowed him to know, at least.

The reason Sunwoo went head on with this marriage thing with such a brave face was because of the girl he was waiting for. As he told Haknyeon, they had been classmates since middle school until they got separated in college because of their different courses. While Sunwoo took the business path, Yeona took medicine. Sunwoo knew he had to wait for years and years ever since Yeona told him about her chosen course. She also told him her focus would entirely be on her studies since her family relies on her so much. Haknyeon thought Sunwoo might be a little crazy in the head for agreeing to marry him despite his reason though. He could never have such guts.

So yes, just like their deal from the very beginning, both of them are free to do what they want and that includes dating…well, more like courting. It’s still very much one sided right now.

But still, no Sunwoo would show up because today was Yeona’s birthday and for sure, they’re celebrating with a dinner somewhere just like how they always do.

When Haknyeon rounded the corner, the streetlights were dimmer than those in the main road. It hurt his eyes and he had to strain them to see in the dark. The road was empty by now since there were no establishments in this area. However, Haknyeon thought he heard something from behind. He cursed himself for being a scaredy-cat. Even if he walked this road a million times already, he still couldn’t stop imagining things hiding behind the shadows. He reminded himself not to watch any more horror films.

He trudged on. Instead of thinking about ghosts he focused himself on the sounds of his footsteps. Tap tap tap. He walked on, clutching his bag closer since it was getting cold.

Tap tap tap.

But there’s something wrong. He’s hearing something else. He walked slower and listened harder.

Tap tip tap tap. Tap tip tap tap.

Another set of footsteps.

His arm started having goosebumps. Was that from behind him? Should he turn to look?

No! He internally screamed. No one is looking back. He had enough of it in the movies. Instead, he heaved a deep breath and increased his pace. For a good twenty seconds, he listened carefully for the sound. It was still there. Same sound, same distance. Haknyeon was starting to get nervous. When he passed a closed salon, he discreetly peeked on the glass reflection to see if someone was behind him.

Fuck .

Someone is behind him. There’s someone behind him. Someone’s following him.

His head was starting to get fuzzy. He looked ahead and tried to find a way out of this situation. He saw the incoming intersection leading to his apartment but the road there was pretty much as dark as the one he’s walking on. Plus, it would be trees and bushes before he emerges to their apartment complex. He shifted his gaze on the other road. He had seen this one every day but never actually walked down the path. He didn’t know what lies beyond it but if he were to choose between the two, he should take this new path right? Obviously the one he knows is dangerous enough. But the other? What if it’s like that too?

Cursing to himself he walked faster down the new path. He’s starting to pray for his life. The moment he slowed just a bit to listen for the other’s footsteps, the more it sounded closer. At this point, Haknyeon was nearly sprinting. He prayed for a police station, or a restaurant, or even a fucking lamppost bright enough to intimidate the stalker.

His phone. Yes, he had a fucking phone. He pulled it from his pocket and tried to act nonchalant as if he’s only playing a song. He even pulled out his earphones and plugged it, but he was actually pressing the first number on his contacts. It rang two times in his earphones before he realized he couldn’t talk about the stalker with the stalker literally trailing behind him. He ended the call instead and sent a message.

im on the way home. and i think im being followed. He pressed send as he couldn’t think of anything else to say. He looked at the contact info and realized he had sent it to Sunwoo as he was the last text he had from earlier. Oh great. Of course, text the unavailable. But he couldn’t find someone else to message because that would already look too suspicious, taking too long just to play a song. He slid his phone into his pocket.

Haknyeon was deliberating whether he should take a turn to try and lose the stalker or continue ahead, but he didn’t  know this place well and he might just get lost. He decided to keep walking ahead.

And just like an answered prayer, a bright light started appearing in his sight. At this point, he threw all caution away. He didn’t care if the stalker would know that he knows he’s being followed already. He just wanted to get there as soon as possible. Increasing his pace even more, the light shone brighter and he finally recognized it as a convenience store.

It felt like he could collapse on the floor the moment he walked into the store and closed the door behind him. He immediately went behind the aisles to hide himself and take a peek outside. He could see the silhouette slowing down in front of the store.

“What the fuck, is he coming inside?!” Haknyeon whispered to himself. His phone buzzed and a message showed.

where are you? tell me immediately haknyeon.

“Fuck wait,” He said, hands shaking as he typed the convenience store he was in. He pressed send but his eyes remained locked on the man. He was wearing a cap that covered his face. Haknyeon couldn’t recognize who he was. His eyes darted to the girl on the counter. She looked way younger than him, maybe a high schooler. Should he ask for help? But could the girl be of any help? He might just put her in danger too.

He had no choice seeing as the man still lingered outside the store. Haknyeon tried to take a few packs of chips into his arms and made his way to the counter, trying to look natural. His phone buzzed again before he got there.

can i call? is it safe?

Not a second later, another text came.

no, put your phone in silent and answer my call. im on the way.

Haknyeon bit his lip and turned to a shelf pretending to look there instead. His phone flashed a caller id and he quickly answered.

“Haknyeon are you ok–”

“Are you driving? Focus on the road!” Haknyeon hissed as silently as he could. “I-I’m fine here. I’m hiding here inside the store. Behind the aisles. The man’s outside but he hasn’t left. He’s just there standing–”

All while on the phone, Haknyeon never took his eyes off the man because he’s afraid he might come in. But it looked like the man got bitten by some insect because he started flailing his hands in the air by his head, swatting something by his ear until he accidentally knocked his cap off.

“—what the fuck.” Haknyeon cursed almost loudly. He straightened his stance and loosened his grip on the bags of chips.

“What? What’s happening there?! Ju Haknyeon?” Sunwoo’s voice rang in his ear.

Haknyeon completely chucked the bags away as his eyes followed the slowly retreating figure to the end of the road.

“Drive slow Kim.” Haknyeon said bitterly into his phone. “You don’t need to hurry anymore. He went away.”

And he knew who the man was.

“He’s your what?!” Sunwoo nearly yelled as he stopped pacing the floor of Haknyeon’s apartment. He looked at him with wide eyes.

“My colleague–” Haknyeon repeated.

“You work with that guy?!”

“Yes, but I–he’s not been coming to work for almost a week now.” Haknyeon explained.

“What did you say his name was, again? Lee? Fuck him.” Sunwoo spat. His feet started moving and he walked back and forth in front of Haknyeon once again. “What does he want?!”

Haknyeon sighed, reclining back on the sofa. He reached for the glass of water he placed on the table and lifted it up to his lips.

“This is the first time right?” Sunwoo asked, his tone lower but way serious now, and it was tinged with concern. He stood in front of Haknyeon with his eyes looking straight into his. “This is the first time he ever bothered you like this?”

Haknyeon’s hand froze in the air. The night of their team dinner flashed in his mind once again and he winced, puting the glass back down on the table immediately even before he could take a sip.

What? ” Sunwoo choked out a breathless whisper at Haknyeon’s reaction. He walked over to Haknyeon and knelt down in front of him. “What’s with that reaction, Ju?” His voice was way softer now like a whisper and his eyes of rage had been replaced with worry as it searched Haknyeon for answers.

Haknyeon tried his best to stay composed as he finally told everything that happened that night to Sunwoo. From the moment he went into the bathroom, until the very last second he was there in the restaurant. At the end of his story, Haknyeon had to hold Sunwoo back by the arms to stop him from storming out of his apartment in search of the said man.

“Calm down Sunwoo,” Haknyeon helplessly said. The other was still tugging against him until Haknyeon placed a hand on his back in resignation. “Please.”

They both collapsed back on the sofa. They sat in silence as Sunwoo watched Haknyeon with his head down, staring at his fingers.

“I didn’t mean to ruin your schedule,” He said. He started fiddling with the pillowcase. A habit Sunwoo knows he does when he feels anxious. “I promise, if only I knew who he was–”

“If you knew, then what? Will you walk up to him and beat him up?” Sunwoo said, though he still sounded worried. “It doesn’t matter if you know him or not. He’s still a creep. And who knows what he would do to you. It’s not your fault.”

“What about Yeona?”

“Yeona?”

“I thought you were with her,”

“No I wasn’t. I was supposed to have dinner with a client but I cancelled.”

“But it’s her birthday?”

Sunwoo scooted closer to Haknyeon and stopped his hands from gripping the pillowcase. “Is that what you were thinking?”

Haknyeon did not answer and removed his hands from Sunwoo’s hold instead. So Sunwoo didn’t have a date. Haknyeon didn’t know how he should feel about it.

“Still. That client might be important,” He said instead.

“And you’re not?” Sunwoo said. “Your safety, I mean?” He quickly added.

The other turned to lean on the armrest instead, and brought his legs up on the sofa so he could curl up into a ball. Sunwoo didn’t argue anymore and let Haknyeon be. He stood up and disappeared for a moment only to return with Haknyeon’s blanket in hand. He draped it over Haknyeon.

Haknyeon sighed again. His body started deflating. Today was a very long day. He wanted to doze off right here on the sofa.

“You should go home Kim,” Haknyeon murmured with his eyes half closed.

Despite being reluctant to leave, Sunwoo stepped out of Haknyeon’s apartment after giving him endless reminders like “Make sure to lock your doors, don’t open it for anyone.” “Keep your phone with you at all times. Call me if something comes up.”

The next day Haknyeon woke up with a migraine.

He didn’t go to work because aside from feeling under the weather, he was also scared that he might run into Lee in the office. He sent an email to Ms. Yoo about his skull-splitting headache and the boss was kind enough to let him be absent and even wished him well. The whole time off, Haknyeon remained in his room curled up in a blanket. He loved the comfort and security of his own bed and the warmth it brought him. It has now become the only place he feels safe in.

That afternoon, Chanhee called on the phone. It felt like ages since they last saw each other. Aside from Sunwoo, the other person who could magically read his mind was Chanhee so even if Haknyeon desperately wanted to avoid the topic, he told him everything as well. Chanhee was so alarmed and worried. He was supposed to go back to their office in three weeks but because of this, he insisted on making arrangements so he could come back as soon as possible. Chanhee said he couldn’t bear a single day knowing his best friend is alone in such a horrible situation. He also told Haknyeon to report the incident to the police or even the HR. Haknyeon assured him he would, although in reality he was still stalling. He just didn’t want to cause a scene. And Lee doesn’t even come to their office anymore. He’s good as fired.

The only time Haknyeon got off his bed was around dinner. Even though he had the whole day to himself, his stomach was empty since morning. He walked down the hallway, his feet stepping on his oversized pajama pants. He opened his fridge to look for anything to eat. The headache dialed down a notch but there was an uncomfortable feeling, still. He saw an ice cream tub at the back of his freezer and although he should be having a proper meal, he was too out of it to cook for himself. So he took it out and brought it to the sofa.

As he was sitting down, he heard shuffling just outside his door. He looked at the gap on the bottom and watched as the shadow moved. He quickly ran into his room and grabbed his phone from the bedside table, ready to call emergency.

He heard a clicking sound then a beep and then his front door opened. Out of fright, Haknyeon grabbed the nearby pillow from the sofa and threw it against the intruder.

Ow! Ju it’s me!” Sunwoo whined. He had been hit square on the face with a thud.

Haknyeon gasped. “Shit I’m sorry, I thought you were a bad guy.”

“Bad guy? With keys?” Sunwoo glared at him, gingerly rubbing his nose.

“I’m sorry, okay?” Haknyeon apologized. “Why are you even here? And why didn’t you just knock?”

“I texted you saying I’m coming over. You didn’t answer so I thought you were sleeping.”

Haknyeon formed an ‘o’ with his mouth. He didn’t see his text. “So why are you here?”

Sunwoo shifted his eyes to his other hand which was carrying a bag and raised it. “I brought you food.”

Haknyeon took it from him with a big smile and placed it over his kitchen counter. He hurriedly opened the bag and the smell of beef noodle soup greeted him.

“Take a seat then,” He told Sunwoo as he took out the container from the bag and gathered bowls in his cupboard. Sunwoo followed and sat down on the stool. “Who told you I didn’t go to work today?”

Sunwoo scratched the back of his head. “My secretary,” He said shortly.

Haknyeon snorted. “You never know how to do things on your own,” He grumbled.

“Hey, I made that on my own.”

Haknyeon looked over his shoulder. “This?” He pointed at the container. “Not your mom?”

Sunwoo mumbled a yes and looked down on his hands. The smile on Haknyeon’s face grew bigger as he eagerly poured soup for the two of them. It was the first time Sunwoo cooked. Not instant food, at least.

Haknyeon took a small sip from his spoon, tasting it. Sunwoo watched with a wincing face as he waited for the other’s verdict.

“It’s good,” Haknyeon said.

“You’re lying.” Sunwoo exhaled, spinning his stool to face away from the counter.

Haknyeon laughed. “I’m not lying Kim. It’s not bad. It’s just right.”

“Really?” Sunwoo spinned back, his eyes suddenly shiny and hopeful.

“Could use more of my teaching but yes, it is good.” Haknyeon assured. Sunwoo grinned in contentment. A warm feeling spreading in his chest–a feeling of pride. He did that on his own.

“The beef isn’t tough and chewy. You cooked it well. It’s soft.” Haknyeon evaluated as he chewed. He could see a faint tint of pink spread on Sunwoo’s cheeks. He’s clearly loving the compliment. “Did you learn this today?”

Sunwoo finished chewing before he replied. “I’ve been trying to learn that a couple of times now. It’s one of my comfort foods so I wanted to know how to make it myself. But it isn’t really what you usually give to someone, right? It’s kind of a food for when you’re ill…”

“Hey, food is food. You can eat it whenever you want, no reasons needed.” Haknyeon defended. Sunwoo smiled and looked back at his bowl.

They both sat across from each other and shared the meal. Finally after a whole day feeling lonely and anxious, Haknyeon felt calm. He felt warm.

“There must be another reason why you’re here Kim. I don’t think flaunting your cooking skills is all there is.”

Haknyeon watched Sunwoo’s back from the kitchen counter as the other washed their dishes on the sink. Aside from bringing food, the visitor also kindly offered his hand in cleaning up with the reason ‘You’re sick. Just stay put.’

“And why are you suddenly so fussy about me?” He added.

Sunwoo finished rinsing the dishes and placed them on the drying rack before facing the kitchen counter. “Alright, fine. I came for something else.”

Haknyeon let out an ‘aha!’ and pointed a finger at Sunwoo. He was happy to be correct.

“And that is?”

“Starting from tomorrow, I’ll be taking you to and from work. That’s if you can go to work already,” Sunwoo said.

“Of course I can, I’m all good already!” Haknyeon huffed. “But why?”

Sunwoo rolled his eyes, walked to the sofa and plopped himself there. Haknyeon followed him. “How can I face your parents if ever something bad happens to you, Ju? I can’t do that. So I’ll make sure nothing will.”

“You don’t have to do that. Chanhee’s coming back soon anyway, I’m sure he’ll accompany me.”

Sunwoo quickly sat up straight on the sofa, eyes darting to Haknyeon. “Chanhee? Who’s Chanhee?”

“Kim. How many times do I have to tell you? Chanhee? My best friend? The one that works in the same office as me? Choi Chanhee?”

“Oh right um I just thought um– anyway . Still, it doesn’t matter. I’ll pick you up everyday. You better not be late.”

Haknyeon groaned. Just another pretty little addition to the things he has to worry about every day. A thought of trying to intentionally come down late came into mind but he remembered Sunwoo’s position in his work and how he couldn’t be late. Nice. Guess no more snooze button for Haknyeon.

Haknyeon had to painfully admit. He was starting to love the attention he’s been getting from Sunwoo over the past week. He was never like this ever since they met. Sure, Haknyeon couldn’t exactly say Sunwoo had no effect on him–he very much has–but this still feels very foreign to him. This time it’s not just all in Haknyeon’s head. He’s not resisting his own unrealistic thoughts anymore, but his urge to interpret the actions Sunwoo actually does.

It feels like they somehow broke down a barrier in between, making them closer like this. But compared to everything in Sunwoo’s life, Haknyeon might still be just a little speck. He thought he shouldn’t dwell on it so much. Just like what he’d been telling himself ever since–that they would eventually come to an end–he shouldn’t let himself swim in this sea of feelings that would only hurt him in the end. He has to get out of the water.

Just like a painful reminder, Sunwoo stopped walking beside Haknyeon when his phone began ringing. He struggled to tap the screen for a while, giving Haknyeon a chance to see the caller id.

Yeona

“Go answer it.” Haknyeon nudged. Sunwoo hesitated for a while but swiped accept. Haknyeon walked to the other side of the corridor and rested his back on the cold tiled wall by the elevators.

It was the end of yet another work week for Haknyeon. He started it with fire, feeling so eager and brave to face his work. But now he’s just drained and tired and empty. He eyed the other man talking on the phone and secretly glared at him.

You. He squinted. He imagined giving Sunwoo a very painful pinch in the arm. He deserved it for loitering in his head for the rest of the week. He was definitely the reason Haknyeon deflated. And actually... not at the same time. The guy didn’t exactly do anything.

“Ugh,” Haknyeon rubs his palms at the sides of his head. “Stop thinking. Stop thinking. Please, it's the weekend already.” He grumbled to himself.

He saw Sunwoo approach from the other side, pocketing his phone.

“Hak I’m really sorry,” He started. Haknyeon knew his day couldn't get any worse now but he swatted his apology away.

“No no, don’t worry. Go ahead. I can go home on my own.”

“Wait no—I’ll be quick. I just can’t turn her down because she’s waiting outside already. But I promise I’ll make it quick. Wait for me.” Sunwoo said. He opened Haknyeon’s palm and placed his car keys there. “Here. Wait for me in the car, I’ll be back in a bit.”

Haknyeon was about to protest but before he could say anything, Sunwoo was already running down the hall.

Well, another thing about Sunwoo; he is stubborn as hell.

Haknyeon dragged his feet across the tiles as he walked towards the elevator. He’s not in a hurry to get home anymore. As he walked he wondered what must be the reason for Yeona to come over, here specifically, in Haknyeon’s workplace. Sunwoo must’ve told her about him being Haknyeon’s new chauffeur. Haknyeon let out a sigh. He hated how he always couldn't seem to stop imagining Sunwoo with her like it doesn’t drill a hole in his chest. He needed to find a way to fix his feelings soon because this is getting too strong.

The elevator dings and Haknyeon steps in. He pressed the button for the basement parking and waited. It took him down the floors and opened into the quiet and empty parking space. Most of the cars had gone, at least in this area. Haknyeon walked on searching for the familiar black car that Sunwoo owned. He didn’t say where he had parked it so Haknyeon walked around trying to find it. He held the keys on his palms and raised it to sound the alarm so he could find it faster.

A hard thud hit him on his side, making him stagger and lose hold of the keys which skidded along the parking floor. Haknyeon recovered from the hard impact while rubbing his shoulders but before he could turn around, a pair of strong arms wrapped around him. One enclosing his arms to his side tightly, and the other pressing a cloth over his mouth. Haknyeon struggled against the force but it was definitely stronger. He soon felt his feet being lifted off the ground as he got carried away to the other end of the lot.

He was slammed into the backseat, with the man never loosening the grip on both of his arms. He reached out for something in his back, while Haknyeon shook the hand away from his mouth.

“Lee let me go!” Haknyeon grunted. He tried to pull his arms away and kicked at him but he wouldn’t budge. “Get off!”

Lee clicked the handcuffs locked with a smirk. He stared at Haknyeon for a few seconds and Haknyeon wanted to gag.

“Help–” His shout was cut off when the man aggressively muffled his mouth. Even though bounded, Haknyeon tried to kick and slide out of the seat but Lee pushed him back harshly, making Haknyeon wince in pain. The door was slammed and his abductor went to sit behind the steering wheel. Haknyeon watched helplessly as he got taken away, the building slowly fading from his view.

Haknyeon didn’t know what to do. His hands started shaking and his chest felt tight. His sight started to get blurry too. Why was this happening to him? What does this bastard want to do with him?

He thought after weeks of silence, he would let go. Turns out the culprit was just planning for his next move. It was a mixture of fear and rage as Haknyeon sat there, unable to do anything to help himself. He couldn’t even cry.

And then he remembered something from the night Sunwoo went to his apartment.

“Give me your phone,” Sunwoo said, palms up waiting.

“Why?”

“Just give it to me. I need to do something.”

Haknyeon relented and handed over his phone. The other took it and tapped through. Haknyeon watched as Sunwoo’s fingers moved swiftly across the screen as it navigated the system.

“This is just to make sure.” Sunwoo said after a while, looking back at Haknyeon. “The best thing to do still is to stay away from that creep. But if something happens and I’m not there, you turn this on. Okay?”

Haknyeon peeked at his phone, confused. “What’s that?”

Sunwoo flipped the phone over so Haknyeon could see properly. “So I know where you are.” He said. “You turn this on, okay? Promise me?” Sunwoo was looking at him in the eyes now, waiting for his response.

“Okay,” Haknyeon replied. “I promise.”

Haknyeon tried to discreetly get the phone from his pocket while Lee was busy driving. He’s pretending to have passed out as he slid the phone out. He struggled to tap through with his hands cuffed but he managed to turn his location on. As he was about to slide it back into his pocket, the car took a sharp turn and he lost his grip on the phone. His head banged against the window too and he cursed out in pain. After blinking away several times, he looked down. The phone had rolled under his seat and Haknyeon mentally cursed himself again.

They stopped at what seemed like an old apartment building. It was at the back where the car had been parked, empty aside from big trash bins and a back door to the building. He almost fell when the door to his side was yanked open. Lee pulled him out with a tight grip before slamming the car door shut. Haknyeon looked back at the car as he was being dragged away. His phone.

Haknyeon still tried to struggle but to no avail. Lee pushed him through the back door and into the maintenance elevator.

“Are you ignoring me?”

Yeona’s expression was way different from the usual bright and cheerful expression Sunwoo was used to. Right now she was mad and all of the anger was aimed at Sunwoo.

“What are you trying to say Sunwoo? Why am I always being left hanging in the air?” She went on. The look she was giving Sunwoo was full of disappointment. “You said you liked me but why do I feel like I’m always being left behind?”

Sunwoo let out a deep breath. He would say something important came up but he had used that excuse too many times already. At this point it’s no use. By now she’s just getting fed up.

When Sunwoo didn’t reply, Yeona ranted even more. “What’s that important thing you keep telling me? Is it more important than me? More important than us? Tell me Kim Sunwoo.” Tears started brimming on the corners of her eyes. When she spoke again, it was much softer and more to herself. “I thought you wanted us to be together but why are you being like this?”

Sunwoo was still very much speechless. He felt his eyes start to get hot too so he looked down to his feet. He couldn’t find where to begin explaining where he was coming from. There was so much to put together and he himself haven’t started figuring it out. He stood there looking like a complete douchebag in front of his very own childhood friend, not saying a thing, and ruining their long relationship at that. Sunwoo felt so bad. He really wanted to explain but now is not yet the right time.

He prayed hard that maybe Yeona would still listen to him some other time. Because even though things changed and it seemed everything was going downhill, he didn’t want to lose his friend.

But despite the turbulence happening inside Sunwoo’s head, his mind was flying over to Haknyeon whom he left alone in the building. A heavy knot was starting to form in his chest like he’s sensing something bad was going to happen.

“You know what. If you’re being like this, I don’t think we can ever work out.” Yeona said, her voice low and her tone final.

He should feel his heart breaking after hearing those words but the heavy feeling remained suspended in the air like it was still hanging there waiting to be cut loose and drop completely. Something else was making him feel uneasy.

Sunwoo shook his head and wiped a hand to his eyes before speaking. “Yeona. I’m sorry. I’m really sorry but I have to go.” He said. He was begging. “I know how I’ve been lately and I’m really sorry. And as a friend, please let’s talk again.”

It was the last thing Sunwoo said before running away.

He was breathless by the time he reached the basement parking—not out of exhaustion but because of the dreadful feeling circling his stomach. He ran towards his parked car and froze when he saw it dark and empty. He felt like his insides drop and his heart started hammering in his chest. Where is he. He searched frantically around the lot for signs of Haknyeon but there was no one around. Not until he sees something glint on the floor. It was his car keys.

Shit.

--

“Why are you doing this?” Haknyeon demanded, willing himself to be brave and not let his voice quiver even though he was bound to the bed frame with cuffs.

Lee loomed over him with a sly smile. “Why wouldn’t I?” He grinned. He moved closer and closer to the bed, positioning himself so he’s enclosing Haknyeon’s torso with his legs. Haknyeon tried to squirm away but the man grabbed a handful of Haknyeon’s hair and tugged it upwards. “Too bad no one would care…” He continued. “It’s always the easiest with people like you. Always free for the taking.”

“Fuck you,” Haknyeon breathed. He shook his head out of the man’s grip but he just tugged tighter, making Haknyeon yelp in pain.

“Don’t you think you’re getting a little too rude, Ju? What happened to the quiet stupid deskmate I knew? Always following through your tasks without complaint even if you’re getting taken advantage of?” Lee mocked worried eyes at Haknyeon and exaggerated an ugly pout. Despite his situation, the words hit Haknyeon harder than the cuffs and the tight grip on him. He felt a fresh wound cut out his chest as those words struck his core.

“It’s your fault you’re such a loser…” Lee carried on. “Weak and incompetent. It’s your fault you’re here right now.”

“Let go of me,” Haknyeon demanded, fighting tears from breaking through. There was a slight quiver in his voice which only made the other man triumphant. Then his smile faded and his eyes got darker.

“No.” He growled, before advancing onto Haknyeon.

Sunwoo’s head went completely blank for a good few seconds before he was back and running up the stairs to the lobby. Maybe Haknyeon was there.

Sunwoo nearly fell as he ran straight into someone, only keeping them both upright with his quick reflexes and arm strength that held onto the other’s arm before they could tip over. He immediately stood back and brushed himself off.

“I’m sorry, really sorry—” He stopped mid-sentence upon recognizing the person he slammed into. Images of Haknyeon’s stories replayed in his head, specifically including the one where he was showing him a photo of his best friend from his phone. “Chanhee? You’re Chanhee right?”

The other was rubbing his side with an annoyed look but he flicked his gaze to Sunwoo upon hearing his name.

“Do I know you?” The other replied, still with a frown on his face.

“Sunwoo. Kim Sunwoo. I hope he at least mentioned me to you? Please I need to find him—” Sunwoo inhaled, catching his breath and fixing his thoughts. “I need your help. Haknyeon’s missing.” He finally said.

“Yeah he did…wait I am very confused. What do you mean Haknyeon’s missing?”

“I think someone took him.” Sunwoo said, uneasy. “Look, I don’t have time.  I can explain on the way. I have his location.”

Chanhee eyed him for a moment, maybe trying to recognize him. Maybe deliberating the situation at full speed too. Then he breathed out in surrender. Sunwoo nodded and started towards the stairs again.

“Where the hell are you going? This way then!” Chanhee called out.

“But my car—”

That is my car.” Chanhee pointed to the entrance where a white car was idle. “Let’s go .

Sunwoo tried his best to explain the situation as fast and comprehensively as he can. He sat at the back while Chanhee was in shotgun and a guy behind the wheel.

Chanhee turned his head slightly to the side. “I’m warning you now just in case you try something funny. My fiancé’s a cop. One wrong move and you’re going to jail.”

“Believe me I’m telling the truth,” Sunwoo pleaded.

“Babe wait, so you’re telling me you don’t know this man? Then why are we going with him—” The guy on the driver’s seat got cut off when Chanhee unconsciously slapped his arm in objection.

“No! I mean, I know him. We just never met before. And it’s just not what Haknyeon told me…he told me that Sunwoo was a family friend.” Chanhee explained, then turned to Sunwoo. “He never told me you were his husband! ”

Sunwoo frantically racked his brains for further explanation. “Yeah because we have an agreement—”

“Okay okay fine. Enough. We can discuss that later. What’s important is finding him first. You sure babe this man is telling the truth?” The driver asked.

“Believe me Younghoon. Haknyeon told me about a stalker a few days ago too, that's actually the reason why I moved back immediately,” Chanhee confirmed.

The man on the wheel, Younghoon apparently, finally looked convinced and gave a nod. He continued to drive following the location indicated on Sunwoo’s phone—tracking Haknyeon.

The car rolled to a stop at a dead end. An empty parking lot except for one car. Sunwoo double checked his phone and it said they were at the location.

They all got out of the car and started scanning the place. Younghoon was the one to call them over toward the lone car in the parking lot. His hand rested on the hood.

“It’s hot.” He said. “This car just came here.”

“Try calling his phone,” Chanhee suggested.

Sunwoo fumbled on his keypad and pressed Haknyeon’s number. His throat closed up when he heard the familiar ringtone sound from inside the car.

Younghoon peeked inside. “The phone’s here,” He said.

Fuck ,” Sunwoo breathed. “He lost his phone. Where do we find him now? Shit I—”

“Sunwoo calm down,” Chanhee interjected, placing a hand on his arm. “We’ll find him.”

Younghoon pulled out his phone when it began ringing and pressed it against his ear. Station , he mouthed at the two.

“Hello? Yeah I’m here…no I’m not just passing by. I’m off duty already but I received a report, why? Wait. A missed call? When? Five minutes ago—are you sure? In this apartment? Can you check?” Younghoon turned back to the two and motioned Sunwoo to follow him. “In this apartment? What room? Tell me—Chanhee, you’re not coming. Stay in the car.”

“I’m not staying in the car, Kim Younghoon. I need to find my friend.” Chanhee sternly refused.

“But—”

“Shut. No arguments. Now where do we go?”

Younghoon sighed. “This way.” He said. Then on the phone he said, “I’ll go check now. Send backup. I don’t have the police car with me.” And with that he cuts the call.

Younghoon kicked the door open, gun raised. “Police! Don’t move!”

He previously briefed the two to wait outside until he’s done with his job but obviously the two would never listen to him. In a second, Sunwoo was already beside Younghoon, looking inside.

The moment Sunwoo roamed his eyes around the room, his sight immediately went red. He saw Haknyeon tied to the leg of the bed and hugging his knees. A man was hovering above him, back against the door, but frozen from the sudden arrival. It was like Sunwoo had lost all reason for a moment as he rushed inside and flipped the man around, immediately throwing a fist to the man’s face afterward. The man staggered a few steps away from the bed, clutching his jaw. He heard Younghoon curse and Chanhee calling after him.

“Sunwoo stop it!”

Sunwoo raised another fist, ready to throw it again to the man’s face when a hand held his wrist back tightly.

“Don’t. Just step back.” Younghoon ordered. Sunwoo struggled against him, his glare enough to bore a hole onto the man’s forehead. He was shaking with anger.

And then he heard his name being called out from the side. Just like that, the strength drained from his arm and Younghoon managed to pull him back and away from the man.

Chanhee was the one to take Haknyeon back to his apartment as soon as they could leave the place. The other two were left behind to deal with the man and the police.

In the apartment, Chanhee immediately wrapped Haknyeon in a blanket and gave him something warm to drink in order to calm him down. Haknyeon was silent the whole ride and he was spacing out as they sat on the sofa.

“Are you okay?” Chanhee asked worriedly. He placed a hand on Haknyeon’s arm.

Haknyeon recognized the touch for a moment before looking back at Chanhee and giving him a tight smile. “Yeah I’m okay. I’m fine.”

“You’re not,” Chanhee commented, choking back his impending tears. He was done pretending to be strong and composed. Now he’s just trying hard not to burst out crying. He couldn’t believe this happened to Haknyeon.

Haknyeon shook his head with a faint smile on his lips. A hand held Chanhee’s own with a light squeeze.  “Chanhee I’m fine,” Haknyeon assured. “I’m okay. He didn’t get to touch me. I fought him.”

“Oh my god,” Chanhee cried out. That was his breaking point and he started sobbing while pulling Haknyeon in his arms. “I’m so sorry Haknyeon—”

“Hey,” Haknyeon frowned, peeling his best friend away from him and holding Chanhee’s face between his palms. “You have nothing to do with this. I’m fine. Okay? That man will get what he deserves. I don’t want to talk about it anymore.”

That only made things worse and Chanhee was soon wetting his cheeks with tears while incoherently mumbling words to Haknyeon as he cried.

It must’ve looked ironic. Chanhee was the one crying so much and Haknyeon was just sitting there awkwardly patting his back. Chanhee just felt so bad for his friend. He didn’t deserve any of this. And he was not exactly good at holding back tears.

When Chanhee’s sobs died down, he turned to look at Haknyeon. Wiping his face, he then frowned at his best friend.

“God Haknyeon. This wasn’t the welcome back ceremony I was expecting. You scared me.” Chanhee whined.

“Yeah I’m sorry,” Haknyeon mumbled.

“You should be.”

Haknyeon turned to give him a confused look.

“How dare you not tell me you have a husband!” Chanhee yelled, slapping Haknyeon’s arm.

Ow —what-oh…he told you?” Chanhee’s expression didn’t change, still half-heartedly frowning at him. Haknyeon sighed. “Well, it’s not like it’s real anyway. We were just arranged to marry by our parents. Not really something I would show off, don’t you think?”

“Arranged? So you two got married only because your parents made you?”

Haknyeon mumbled something about how he’s just rephrasing what Haknyeon just said. Chanhee huffed and crossed his arms on his chest, standing directly in front of Haknyeon.

“Then how come he’s literally head over heels for you?”

Haknyeon choked on his tongue. A look of disbelief covered his face. “He’s not ,”

“He is.”

“Not.”

“He is! Have you seen him? God. One look and you’ll know, Hak. How dense could you be? If only you saw him earlier while we were looking for you. He was going nuts I tell you.” Chanhee clicked his tongue. “That man is in love with you.”

Haknyeon’s breath caught. It was a very straightforward statement. Of course, it’s Chanhee he’s talking to. His mouth moved, trying to find words to say then only resorted to a sigh. “I don’t know Chanhee. Maybe you are reading it wrong. He’s only like that because my parents might blame him for anything that happens to me. Plus he’s pining for someone else.”

Chanhee let out a gasp. “ Damn, really?” He shook his head. “I didn’t know that…he looked very much invested in you though.”

Haknyeon ignored him instead. He’ll overthink that some other time.

A knock cut off their conversation. Chanhee offered to get the door. Haknyeon heard him greet the newcomers before their footsteps sounded, coming to the living room.

Younghoon arrived with Sunwoo. Haknyeon assumed they settled the case already or let the station handle it.

Chanhee looked between them. “Since Sunwoo is here, I guess I can leave you to rest now, Hakkie?” He asked. He was already beside Younghoon and latching onto his fiancé’s arm anyway. It’s not like Haknyeon could argue against it.

Haknyeon nodded. “Thank you, both of you for helping out. I’m sorry for troubling you.”

“Hey shut it. You know we’d help you in a heartbeat.” Chanhee said. “Alright, we’ll go now. I’ll call you tomorrow Hak but tonight please get some rest, okay?”

Haknyeon hummed in agreement.

The couple exchanged a few words with Sunwoo as well before they left the apartment. When it was just the two of them, the whole room fell dead silent. Sunwoo was just standing there by the hallway with his head down.

Haknyeon spotted the wound on his hand and without another word, he stood up to get the first aid kit. Sunwoo was still there when he got back, not moving a muscle. Haknyeon thought he might still be processing everything that happened.

“Hey,” Haknyeon called. Sunwoo snapped out of his trance and looked up to him. “Come sit here.” Haknyeon patted the space beside him on the sofa and Sunwoo wordlessly obliged.

Haknyeon took Sunwoo’s hand in his palms and inspected it.

Paboya. Why did you have to punch him like that? Do you think you can take him on your own?” Haknyeon questioned as he applied ointment to Sunwoo’s injured knuckles. “You don’t even know how to punch. Look, you’re just going to break your bones. Can’t even kill a cockroach and now you’re punching people…”

Sunwoo sagged his shoulders and pouted. “What was I gonna do...I was so angry. My entire vision turned red then my mind went blank. It’s like someone plugged cotton into my ears and I couldn't think straight—I just went  for it.”

Haknyeon glared at him. “Just. Don’t ever do it again. That was dangerous. What if he hit you back?”

“You were in danger, Hak. How could I not,” The other said under his breath. Haknyeon’s gaze shifted from his hand to meet his eyes. “You care for me that much?” He said, not really looking for an answer.

Sunwoo answered him anyway. “Why, you think I don’t Ju?” He said. The corner of his mouth turned slightly upward, a small change in expression but Haknyeon was glad that his mood was improving. When Haknyeon didn’t answer, he continued. “I do care about you. A lot. A lot more than I thought I would.”

That was not the answer Haknyeon was expecting. Obviously he must have some other better reason…just not that. Haknyeon still couldn’t believe someone would be that way for him. He was so unfamiliar with the thought of being cared for that he always questioned every encounter he got.

“But why though?” Haknyeon couldn’t help but ask. “I get that my parents might come after you and all that but why go through lengths for someone who’s more of a nuisance to you than not?”

Sunwoo pulled his hand back from Haknyeon’s palms. “Hak, listen to me.”

The other gulped and shut his mouth. This was getting way too serious and he wasn’t sure what to do. He just wanted to scold him earlier but his plans were getting derailed and now he’s about to face a very serious looking Sunwoo. No, there weren’t many opportunities for him to see the other like this so he’s very much nervous right now.

“I need you to throw that thought away–where you think you’re just someone dispensable to me. Because you’re not. You’re important…” He hesitated for a second, then added. “...to me.”

“Sunwoo,”

A hand reached up to gently hold the side of Haknyeon’s face. Haknyeon bit his lip and nervously returned the gaze Sunwoo was giving him. They stared at each other for a long while, Sunwoo occasionally brushing his thumb to caress Haknyeon’s cheek. It looked like he wanted to say more but eventually, he pulled away.

He rubbed his hands on his lap before breathing out and giving Haknyeon a small smile. “I should get going too,” He said and stood up.

Haknyeon tugged at his arm as he passed by. “But you left your car,”

“It’s okay I can manage,”

“No.” Haknyeon bit his tongue. “I m-mean, you can just stay for tonight. It’s late already.”

In the end, Sunwoo couldn’t argue with that. They ordered delivery for dinner and ate together. Haknyeon couldn’t help but notice how Sunwoo was looking at him most of the time. He’s not even trying to hide it anymore. He just comfortably does it while minding his business. It kept Haknyeon on the edge. He’s shy and suddenly feeling so self-aware.

It gets even worse when Haknyeon found out all of his sweatpants were in the laundry and the only clothes decent enough to offer to Sunwoo was his tangerine pajama pair. Sunwoo laughed at it but said it's all fine with him and even found it cute. When he emerged from the shower wearing those walk of shame pajamas, Haknyeon felt his cheeks turn red and hot. He couldn't stop thinking how annoyingly gorgeous Sunwoo is even while wearing something a child would.

“I think this is my new fashion style now,” Sunwoo said, showing off his fit. Haknyeon threw a towel on his face and the other just laughed it off and proceeded to dry his hair.

Haknyeon had to catch himself several times because lately he felt like his legs turned jelly. Why was he feeling extra weak today? And his chest wouldn’t stop acting weird. He realized it was indeed because of this man wearing his tangerine pajamas, standing there like he’s not tipping Haknyeon’s world upside down yet again.

But he sighed and turned to flop back on the sofa. Just like always, a thought popped his happy bubble, making him realize it was all in his head.

“What’s wrong?” Sunwoo frowned when he saw the change in Haknyeon's expression.

Fine. I’ll just ask him then. Haknyeon thought. This is to end his questions once and for all. For his mind to be at peace. He knew the answer might hurt him but he’s already been through a lot today, he could take a little more.

“About you and…Yeona,” He started. Sunwoo immediately shifted his expression.

“What about it?” Sunwoo prodded.

Haknyeon started playing  with the edge of the throw pillows on the sofa once again and averted eye contact. “What happened? Not just earlier, but lately too. I barely see you with her anymore and when I thought you were, you said you actually weren’t. I know I’m sorry, I must sound nosey right now but I just can’t stop wondering about it. Y-you can not answer me of course.”

Sunwoo sat beside him and licked his lips. “Before I answer that, I need you to answer mine first.” He said. “Why are you always worried about us?”

Haknyeon shook his head. “I-I don’t know. I’m…I just…I can’t stop thinking about it. I don’t exactly know how to explain it to you Kim. This is hard. And I’ve tried to ignore it and I did for so long. I managed to keep it to myself but it’s just this time that I’m…I don’t know what happened really…suddenly I can’t keep it to myself anymore. So I’m sorry if I’m being like this. I can’t explain it myself. And I don’t want to cross any lines–”

Haknyeon stopped talking when Sunwoo scooted closer and they were only mere inches apart. “...w-what are you doing…”

“Are you being jealous, Ju?” Sunwoo whispered, a knowing smirk playing on his lips.

“You’re being unfair with this Kim,” Haknyeon whined and closed his eyes shut with a shaky breath. “Why are you making it harder for me? You can just give me an answer.”

“What do you mean unfair, this is unfair,” He gestured toward his childish pajamas. Haknyeon protested with a closed mouth cry and when Sunwoo saw he was close to tears from frustration and embarrassment, Sunwoo laughed and pulled him close to his chest, enclosing him in his arms.

Sunwoo rubbed circles on Haknyeon’s back as he cried and grumbled incoherent rants to his shirt. “I have to apologize. I keep forgetting people can easily fall for my charms…”

He earned a smack on his side by Haknyeon’s fist with another string of complaints.

Still holding Haknyeon close even if he already struggled to free himself, Sunwoo softly said, “Actually I have something to confess too,”

“Mmm?”

“Recently I made a very interesting discovery,” Sunwoo recounted. His hands stopped moving along Haknyeon’s back and it seemed like even both of them stopped breathing.

“I think I’ve fallen for my husband,”

Another loud slap echoed through the previously silent living room when Haknyeon finally pulled out of Sunwoo’s hold and hit him hard on the arm. “That’s me you idiot. You’re so full of yourself you can’t even get your punchline right.” Haknyeon argued. “You’re still married to me so technically I’m still your husband. Get your words straight.”

“Oh but that’s exactly what I meant Ju,” Sunwoo said swiftly. “You.”

Haknyeon, who was grabbing pillows off the sofa to throw to Sunwoo, froze with his arms mid-air. He blinked, then he dropped the pillows, then his legs gave out and he plopped back down on the sofa.

“Y-you’re not playing with me right now, are you? Is this a new game you’re on Kim?”

Sunwoo grabbed Haknyeon by the arms and pulled him so he’s sitting close again. “How come you never believe anything I say to you, mmm? I meant it. I mean it when I say I’m in love with you.”

Haknyeon sank deeper in his place and covered his ears. He glared at Sunwoo. “Must you really say it so straightforward like that?!” He whined, but he’s so mad that there’s goosebumps on his skin, butterflies on his stomach, a whole circus in his chest, and his mind nothing but soup. He’s having a system error. Glitching. Malfunctioning.

Sunwoo laughed. “That’s quite a reaction. Not that I expected any less from you Ju. I knew you’d somehow react like this.”

“You’re so unfair,” Haknyeon insisted.

“Am I really?” Sunwoo smirked, seeing his effect on his husband. “Come here,”

This time, Haknyeon willingly surrendered into his arms and it could easily be the best thing Sunwoo ever experienced in his life.

“Have I answered all your questions Ju?” Sunwoo whispered in his ear. Haknyeon hugged him tightly and felt a nod in response.

–-

Sunwoo planned to sleep on the sofa for the night but Haknyeon dragged him into his room all while saying he couldn’t sleep because of guilt that Sunwoo might have to endure an aching back in the morning.

Now, Haknyeon lay awake in bed, staring at the ceiling and replaying everything that happened last night. He turned his head to the side and saw Sunwoo sleeping with his body turned towards Haknyeon and an arm draped by his torso.

It was the first night they slept together. Almost two years married but it was the first time they shared one bed. Haknyeon watched the man sleeping peacefully beside him. He couldn’t imagine how they even came to where they were right now. So many things brought them here, in this one bed, sharing one warm embrace.

Sunwoo stirred awake. After slowly opening his eyes and blinking several times, a smile crept up his lips. He realized he was holding onto Haknyeon and it grew even bigger when he looked up to see the other already awake.

“Good morning,” He greeted.

Haknyeon scoffed at him. “That’s a first, Kim.” He said. “Mr. Tangerine Pants.”

Sunwoo snuggled closer and pouted. “Where’s mine?”

Haknyeon internally shouted to the void when a warm pleasant feeling bloomed inside him. He could never get used to this.

“Good morning to you too,” He finally said. Sunwoo looked content and returned his head to rest by Haknyeon’s shoulder.

They stayed like that for a while. It felt nice having each other close like this. For so long, Haknyeon wondered if he would ever have Sunwoo look at him the way he wanted to, and now that felt like years ago. He could take all the loving stares he wanted now.

“I was just thinking,” Haknyeon started. Sunwoo hummed for him to continue. “What about the lawyers?”

“Don’t think about it. I’ll make sure that bastard rots in jail.” Sunwoo sternly replied.

“No, I mean...our lawyers. For the divorce…”

Sunwoo dipped his head so his face was buried on Haknyeon’s neck and the breath tickled his skin. Sunwoo sniffed and held Haknyeon closer.

“Please tell them to get lost. Tell them to fuck off and not come back anymore. Ever. We don’t need them and we never will. Please Hakkie.”

Haknyeon smiled to himself knowing he just achieved what he wanted to do. To get Sunwoo to lose his cool, intimidating facade and just be like this…a clingy, whiny, his-employees-would-probably-laugh-at-him kind of man. His man, at least.

“What are you trying to say, Kim?” Haknyeon feigned innocence. He’s clearly loving this.

“What I’m saying is,” Sunwoo said, shuffling so he’s now higher on the pillow than Haknyeon and he can bury his face with the other’s hair. “ Sireunde . I don’t want to. I’m your husband and I want to stay that way. Always.”

Let’s say Haknyeon’s plan backfired. And he was now feeling so much more emotions than he could ever explain but he didn't care one bit. He turned to face Sunwoo and pulled him down so he could press his lips to his. The sudden kiss left Sunwoo in shock that it had to register to him for a few seconds, but then he also kissed him back. The feeling started at the bottom of his chest then it bloomed until it radiated through his whole body and man he’s just so in love. In love with Haknyeon and every single thing about him.

When they pulled away for a moment, Sunwoo felt Haknyeon smile against his lips. It made him smile too. Then this time Sunwoo went first and their lips met once again.

Haknyeon thought he found his new safe place. Right here, in the arms of his own husband, but this time it’s not just on paper.

EPILOGUE

Some experiences in life, no matter how beautiful or shitty they are, could be the start of something better. Haknyeon realized it was time to have his own life in his hands.

It had been four months since the incident, and in those months he arranged everything he could to prepare his department for his resignation. He is finally giving up this job to find something else that would make his heart full.

Sunwoo had been so supportive of him since the beginning. He was always there for Haknyeon. He always assured him to take his time, not to pressure himself into finding a new job, because as he put it, Sunwoo could “handle this”. Still pretty arrogant but Haknyeon keeps him in check.

Although there is this one instance that he couldn’t. It was when Sunwoo decided he wanted to buy a house for them and Haknyeon couldn’t stop him no matter how hard he tried. Sunwoo was so stubborn when he wanted something. He kept saying “I can’t stand living separated from you anymore,” like that’s a properly sane reason to buy a house in less than a month! While Haknyeon liked to think things through and take months for a decision as crucial as picking a house, Sunwoo just goes on with whatever his pulse says.

So to compensate for the mental crisis Haknyeon suffered upon Sunwoo’s arrival with keys to a new house, he told Haknyeon that he could design and arrange it however he wanted and Sunwoo will have no more say in it. Haknyeon eventually took the deal.

It was a Friday, and the couple just came from their usual family breakfast at Sunwoo’s parents’ house. Sunwoo excused the both of them after their meal and a short catch up saying he wanted to take Haknyeon somewhere.

“What is it this time, Kim? If you’re going to make me have another mental breakdown please no.”

Sunwoo laughed as he turned the intersection. “Promise you won’t. It’s just a small visit.”

“Visit where?”

Sunwoo lied. It wasn't a small visit . And it definitely did cause Haknyeon to have a mental breakdown right as Sunwoo rolled in front of the lot. Haknyeon was so close to bursting to tears when they stepped out of the car.

“What is this Kim Sunwoo!” Haknyeon cried out as he looked around.

Sunwoo had taken him to his dream culinary university. The one where he spent days and nights reading blogs, watching videos, scouring websites about it. This was a big university known for their state of the art facilities and top class chefs. Haknyeon couldn’t believe he’s standing right in their parking lot.

Sunwoo had both hands in his pockets, watching Haknyeon’s reaction with so much endearment. He could see how much this university meant to him. It was a stepping stone to his dreams. He recalled that one night he found Haknyeon in their living room, asleep with his laptop open in front of him. Sunwoo carried him to bed that night. But he also discovered Haknyeon’s love for cooking that he was seriously considering applying in a culinary school.

“What are you waiting for, let’s go inside.” Sunwoo smiled. Haknyeon bit his lips nervously and held on tight to Sunwoo’s hands as they entered the building.

The high of the university visit was still evident even as the two of them continued to spend the rest of their day together. Haknyeon refused to leave his entrance application envelope in the car and wanted to carry it along with him as they went to the mall and ate lunch. He said he was starting to feel his life get back on track. He said he loved the feeling of starting again and having a bright future ahead of you. Sunwoo was beyond happy to see him like this.

Right now, they sat in a park just to unwind from a very busy day. Sunwoo loves to take Haknyeon out on dates and every time they do, it’s just as interesting as the other. They could do anything together. They could spend even the most boring day and turn it into something meaningful.

Which brought Sunwoo to hold Haknyeon’s hand as they watched the sunset.

“I have a question Ju,” Sunwoo said. “But don’t think too much about it,”

“I don’t know if I can ever trust your warnings ever since today Kim. They’re never accurate. I almost cried earlier because of you.” Haknyeon whined.

Sunwoo shook his head with a smile. “Okay, I won’t ask then. I’ll just say it.”

“Say what?”

Sunwoo turned to face Haknyeon and held his hand up to place a small kiss there.

“Marry me,” Sunwoo said.

“Again. This time in front of the people we love, and for the world to see. This time for real.” He added. “Will you, Ju?”

Haknyeon bit his lip to stop it from wobbling and he nodded. He nodded then he reached out to pull his man close and he held him tight. “Yes, I’ll marry you. Again and again and however many times you want to,” Haknyeon replied. He pulled back to look Sunwoo in the eyes. “I love you.” He whispered.

“I love you too,” Sunwoo breathed before pressing his lips to Haknyeon’s and wiping a tear from his cheek. “Always.”
