Chapter Text

Not the sound of clicking heels that Lucy had gotten so used to these past few months, but the sound of boisterous footsteps entered the bullpen. "DIA Officer Aaron Weiss. I'm here to replace DIA Officer Whistler."

Lucy's eyes shot up from behind the desk. Confused, she scanned the man standing just outside the elevator; his arms were crossed over his chest, a file in his left hand. He had a scrubby beard, dark blonde hair and an unamused expression on his face.

Only then, the realization hit Lucy.

Where the hell was Whistler?

Quickly, she looked over at Jesse, who already had his eyes on her, giving her a clueless frown. Kai did the same, whereas Tennant made her way through the desks and introduced herself to the man.

"Jane Tennant, special agent in charge. We spoke on the phone earlier today."

The man nodded politely and handed her the file. "A report on the possible suspects of the murder on Navy Lieutenant Moore, like you asked."

Tennant took the file and gave him a grateful smile before watching him step back into the elevator. Once the door closed, Lucy found herself standing up from behind her desk. "Tennant?"

Her boss turned around and let out a sigh and mumbled a quiet: "I knew this would happen." She walked over to Lucy and pointed at her office. "Let's talk in there."

A feeling of uncertainty, worry and confusion struck Lucy as she followed Tennant and closed the door behind her, standing there as Tennant took a seat on the chair.

"Well?" Lucy blurted out, crossing her arms over her chest. "Are you gonna tell me what this is all about?"

Tennant placed the file she received on another pile of papers and folded her hands on the table, before looking up at Lucy.

It didn't exactly bring Lucy any reassurance.

"Whistler is currently on a flight to D.C."

Lucy's eyes widened at the words. “D.C.?!" She brought her hands to her face in disbelief, before locking eyes with Tennant again. "Why didn't she tell me? Why is she going there? A-and for how long?" A questioning frown turned into an angry one. "Did you know?"

"Lucy, I didn't know until I heard it this morning. I promise," Tennant told her calmly. "All I heard was that she got offered a temporary job as head DIA; their current boss is out with an illness." She gave her a sad smile. "I guess she took the opportunity."

"I think I need some air."

With quick steps, Lucy rushed to the elevator, pressed the ground floor's button and immediately walked outside once the door opened. Somewhere far away from the main entrance, she rested against a wall and went over everything she felt inside.

The past month had been one wherein her and Whistler barely had any contact. After what had happened with Cara, Lucy didn't want anything to do with her anymore. But she didn't stop caring, and she didn't stop hoping for the moment when Whistler would beg for her to come back, or make a grand gesture to show her how she really felt about her.

But that never happened.

Instead, there were stares full of tension, work-filled words whenever Whistler would help on a case, and even then, they kept it as brief as possible.

She didn’t let it show on the outside, but on the inside Lucy was hurting. It hurt, because she really thought that what her and Whistler had was real, that this was different than things from the past, that this was the person she'd see herself with for the rest of her life.

But Whistler wasn’t honest, and Lucy wouldn’t let herself get hurt even more. So, she let her go, straightened her back, held her head up high and was going to make the blonde realize that she made the biggest mistake of her life by throwing away what her and Lucy had.

If Lucy had known all of this, she’d never fucking started this. Because now she was here, heartbroken, and Whistler was gone for god knows how long.

She could already imagine what would happen when Whistler would return: she would’ve forgotten about her, would’ve moved on like nothing ever happened and go on to make the career she so badly wanted.

Maybe Whistler didn’t care about her as much as Lucy thought she did.

And that hurt like hell.
