Many Guises and Many Names

Summary:

This collection of drabbles and short pieces focuses on Aragorn, the people who knew him, and/or the significance of his life.

MEFA 2007: "Clothes Make the Man," First place, Humor, Drabble

Some are funny, some are sad; some deal with great events, some are family portraits--but you will not find scenes Tolkien already wrote, such as the coronation or the betrothal at Cerin Amroth. Each drabble or vignette can stand on its own, but taken together they paint a broader portrait of the man. The stories appear in order as they would fall in Aragorn's lifetime.

Chapter Text

The smith let the still-dark stone cool after the forging of the eagle's wings. Then, cradling it in his palm, he awakened its hidden power with his breath.

At a quiet pond rimmed with moss and ferns, he dipped the stone into the water's green-gold depths and felt the power surge. He raised the stone to the light of the sky:

Jewel, heal wounds of despair;
Light, renew all worthy arts.
Eagle, bring hope to the children;
Fire, rekindle barren hearts.

In his exultant fingers a green sun blazed in the span of the fierce eagle's wings. It was done.
