"I’m going to propose to you,” Eddie says, smiling to himself.
The two of them are laying in bed when Eddie says this, curled up in each other’s arms. Richie is on their phone mindlessly fidgeting while Eddie has his head tucked into their chest.
“Uh huh.”
Eddie pulls away from them, trying to look in their eyes. Richie avoids his eyes. Eddie decides to talk anyway.
“No, really,” he says. ”I am. I love you and I’m going to marry you one day.” Eddie lays his head on their arm, looking up at them fondly.
"You are?" Richie teases, cheeks darkening as they look away from their phone. A few anxieties seemed to poke in, mostly about how soon this was after his last marriage. Wouldn't he want to wait? What if someday after they get married, Eddie decides he doesn't want to be with them?
Eddie rolls his eyes, still smiling. "Of course I am." He raises his hand to set on Richie's cheek, sensing their anxiety. "Why would I joke about something as serious as you?" Eddie can feel the heat rising from their face.
"Ok. Yeah. Ok," they say. They turn and set their phone on the nightstand, then turn back to their boyfriend. "Alright. So we're going to get married. What's next on that list of yours?"
This time it's Eddie's turn to blush. "Why do you assume I have a list? I'm not that organized, Babe."
Richie raises an eyebrow. Eddie blushes more out of embarrassment.
"Okay so maybe I've thought about this a lot," Eddie relents. Richie chuckles. Eddie pulls away from them to sit up.
"Wait, no! Come back!" Richie pouts, holding their arms out. Eddie sighs, but rejoins his lover anyways. Richie moves so Eddie can lay his head back on their shoulder. “Next?” they ask when Eddie is settled.
"Well," he starts. "I think we should get a puppy."
Eddie must know his doe eyes are powerful, Richie thinks. That's the only reason he pulls them out so much. They sigh. "I bet you already have one picked out, don't you?" They smile softly at their boyfriend.
Eddie nods excitedly. "Her name is Sarah. She's a golden retriever and the literal cutest." Eddie reaches for his phone from his pocket and pulls up a picture of a pretty cute golden retriever. "She's up to date on shots and everything else, too."
Richie must have a soft look on their face because Eddie giggles. "Well, alright. It seems like we have a little bit of a plan. What else do you have on that list of yours?"
"Well, next is marrying you, of course," Eddie says.
Richie's fading blush comes back full force, face warming. "Wait, wait, wait. I don't see a ring," they joke, still a little worried.
Eddie seems to light up as he gets up and out of their bed, going to his shirt drawer, and pulling out a velvet box. "Aha!" He brings it back over as Richie sits up on their elbows.
Eddie sits on his legs on the bed, not at all bothering to mimic the usual position someone would propose in. He holds it out, opening it so Richie could see inside. "Richie Tozier, will you marry me?" Eddie asks, a light blush crawling over his face.
Richie feels like they could burst into tears. It didn't feel real. It felt like one of their teenage fantasies that they only thought would say just that: a fantasy. But it was happening, really happening. He was still a little anxious about it, though.
Richie looks Eddie in the eyes so there was no doubt in their answer. "Yes. I will."
Eddie smiles widely as he takes the plain gold band out and slides it onto Richie's finger. He giggles again after, leaning forward to press their lips together in a kiss that ends up far from modest.
Eddie pulls away first, putting their foreheads together as he intertwines his fingers with theirs. "I love you so much, Richie," he says, closing his eyes.
Richie follows seconds later. "I love you, too, Eddie," they say softly, feeling the safest they ever have. They feel Eddie smile.
After a moment, Richie pulls back to lay back down. "Join me?" they ask, holding out a hand.
Eddie takes it, resuming the position he had been in before he had gotten up, their arm around him.
"I can't wait to see you in a suit," Eddie says, leaning back in.
"Oh how heteronormative of you," they joke, ghosting against Eddie's lips.
"Would you rather wear a dress?" Eddie asks back.
"Only the best."
