Out of his locket fell a little white pill. It looked inconspicuous enough, but when his teacher takes a closer look, it puts Alex’s identity on the line.

Summary
He knows that things like him accumulate followers—worshippers, vessels of devotion that Hell so deeply adored in its ranks. He’s not there yet, of course he isn’t. He’d only just crawled back into this plane, all ill-fitting self and no title to call his own. He has yet to grow, build himself up, draw the eyes of those that might one day call the boy who crawled out of Hell their God.
Edwin feels larger than life under Charles’s eager gaze, legs swinging freely from the shrine built around him by Charles’s immediate recognition.
in which edwin crawls out of hell as something less human and charles, no matter his state, finds a way to become edwin's knight.

“He and Edwin are tight after that, mismatched as they are. Edwin's proper and respectable and can be downright prissy, just enough of a bitch to be a brilliant best mate. Charles is a half-hazard, rude whirlwind of a boy, about as proper and respectable as a mangy stray, always tugging Edwin down into the mud with him, fluffing up his feathers just to watch him rearrange them, smooth them down again. Edwin smooths him down too, indulgently rearranges him and shines him up, both of them pretending not to enjoy it. Charles takes to trailing him the way a tsunami follows an earthquake, an immeasurable force of nature and its natural consequence.“

Summary
It's one of the first things Charles notices about Edwin: he doesn't have a daemon.
While Anita curls around him, protective with teeth bared despite the freezing water drenching her fur, Edwin stands alone.
Charles hadn't thought it was possible to lose your daemon and stay sane, but he also hadn't thought that ghosts were real, so he just sort of accepts it and moves on.
When he finally does gather the courage to ask Edwin about it weeks later, Edwin goes awfully still, a wild, panicked look crossing his eyes for just long enough to make Charles regret saying anything.
Eventually, Edwin does respond, voice low and rough.
"Hell is designed to tear souls apart, Charles," he says, not meeting Charles' eyes. "I'm sure you can deduce the rest."
