It’s easily said that the world will always find balance. For every evil there is an act of good. That the dark’s strongest soldiers are matched with warriors of light. However, wondering about the halls of a museum which walls have been ripped of all art, it’s hard to remember that.
Alex let a smile curl over their lips as they tuck the starry night under their arm. What a day to be a villain. They could take whatever they wanted and absolutely no one could stop them. No hero was strong enough to even come close. They were a god among mortals. No one could even be their equal, let alone adversary.
The Song Jenny starts to emanate from Alex’s pocket, and they scramble to pick it up, nearly dropping the painting in the process.
“Heyy Morgan, what’s up?” their breathless voice reached the d class villain.
“Hey, are you free? I need some help-”
“are you okay? Where are you? I’ll kill them-”
“Alex, shut up for a minute? I need help getting one of Ms. Colly's cats out of a tree again. When can you get here?”
Alex takes a breath, “Two minutes.”
....
Sure enough, Alex struts over to Morgan outside the apartment complex to the few trees dotted around. Over his shoulder he had a cardboard tube and his usual smug look.
“Spoils of war?” Morgan gestures to the tube. Alex grins.
“Which kitty is it this time?” Alex peered up into the tree, searching for the branches for one of his feline friends. He spent a lot of time with Ms. Colly and her cats on the occasions when Morgan wasn’t at home, and they’d stopped by unexpectedly.
Two small eyes meet Alex’s orange ones, and the cat let out a small meow for help.
Alex gasped, “Peppermint!” They quickly summon a ladder to lean against the tree, rushing up to help the kitten down. Morgan holds the bottom of the ladder.
It was an odd sight to say the least.
Two villains fussing over a small kitten and an old lady. Making sure that they’re both okay before helping them both back to the apartment. Anyone would think they were amateur heroes.
After ensuring Ms. Colly got back to all cats okay, Morgan offered Alex a drink.
...
The kettle whistled as Morgan waltzes around making coffee. Alex just watched. Morgan drank instant coffee religiously, it was a disgusting and pitiful sight and Alex loved that. When they first met, Alex would bring Morgan coffee from all over the world, but nothing would change his opinion. He was stubborn, it was refreshing.
Alex was used to people doing whatever they told people to do. Morgan wouldn’t put up with that. Not ever.
Taking a sip, Alex sighed into their mug. They had gotten used to the taste, and shamefully enjoyed it. In their defense, Morgan had made it.
“You know, if you just got a ladder, you could get the cats yourself.”
Morgan sat down next to Alex, his own mug in his hands. “Why, am I bothering you?”
“NO, not at all-”
“Good,” Morgan locked eyes with Alex, a smirk falling over his lips and Alex’s cheeks burned preemptively knowing the next words this man would say would fluster them, “I like the view.”
Alex groans, hiding their face in their mug.
Morgan’s laugh echoes around the two, for a moment the apartment looked brighter, his eyes settling on Alex again, a humored smile now taking the mischievous look. “You’re too easy.”
“You’re a pain.”
“oh yeah? You can go anytime, you know where the door is and it’s unlocked.”
A soft click from the front door was followed by Alex’s grin. “Doesn’t look that way to me.”
Morgan rolls his eyes, “You just always have to have your way” he laughs.
“If that was the case we’d have our own cat”
“there is nothing stopping you from getting a cat on your own you know.”
Alex sighs, “but I want one with my husband” they drew out the last word excessively, wiggling their ring finger and wedding band in front of Morgan. This was the only thing that got him and Alex watched in delight as his face blushed.
“You wear that to torment me. I have offered an official divorce so many times-“
“and I keep saying no-“
“and I don’t know why.”
Morgan crossed his arms like a toddler in a grump.
Alex smiled at him, “because why would I want to divorce someone like you.”
Morgan frowned at him, “we’re married for tax reasons.”
Alex shakes their head at the D tier villain. It had been so long, how could he still be so clueless? “you're the one who married me for tax reasons”
Morgan shrugs awkwardly, “well, yeah?”
“but I didn’t.”
Frowning, Morgan locked eyes with Alex keeping a steady gaze. Not a lot of people could do that. “Then why bother? Just to be annoying?”
Alex stands up, taking his mug to the sink, not answering him. Morgan follows.
“Hey, you can’t just ignore me.”
Alex locks eyes with Morgan, this time eyes filled with determination to say what he has been wanting to say for years. “Morgan. I love you.”
Silence.
Morgan blinked.
“Alex, I… I don’t know what to say to you right now.”
For the first time in a long time Alex’s heart dropped to the pit of their stomach. Dread welled up in it’s place. Their mind racing, demanding to know why they even said it.
Alex’s waist was suddenly accompanied by Morgan’s arms as he pulled them into a tight hug.
“Thank fuck, I can’t stand pining anymore. It's exhausting.” He grumbled.
The tension melted away, Alex returned the embrace letting his heart dance back in it’s place; enjoying the warm feeling of Morgan’s body on his.
This was what happily ever afters where. Two criminal lovers enjoying coffee and comfort together. Nothing could be better. Nothing to ruin it. This was perfection.
“We still can’t get a cat. I’m allergic.”
“I want a divorce.”
