Work Text:
"Mmmmmgh!" Sam moaned out as he gave a big stretch after waking up. He looked over at the calendar on his and Max's wall.
"Oh hey, it's my birthday today." Sam said as he looked over to Max's side of the bed. Max wasn't there, so he figured he must be getting breakfast. He got up, and went over to the kitchen. There was Geek and John eating breakfast.
"Oh, hey Dad, happy birthday!" Geek said.
"Aw, thanks Geek!" Sam said as he poured himself some coffee.
"We wanted to give you your presents from us before you went to work." John said as he slid a present over to Sam. Geek also slid over her own. Sam opened them to find an old pulp detective comic book from when he was a kid, and a speed loader for his revolver.
"Holy yellowbellied varmints hunting in the desert! I always wanted this comic since I was a kid! I had the issue before this one, and it ended on a big cliffhanger! I could never find this one!" Sam said as he looked at Geek's gift.
"Well, I remember you bringing it up during family game night one time. I did some searching around and found it." Geek said.
"And a speed loader for my over-sized revolver! That'll really help on the job!" Sam said.
"I'm honestly surprised you didn't have one until now." John said.
"Ah, that's because the last speed loader I had was swallowed by a portal to the hell known as Detroit during a case in Winnipeg me and Max did back in the day!" Sam said.
"That sounds normal for you two." Geek said.
'Aw, well, thanks kids!" Sam said.
"Aw, no problem Dad." Geek said.
"So have you seen Max?" Sam said.
"Well, he wanted to get to the office without waking you to get your birthday surprise ready, so he asked me to teleport him to the office." Geek said.
"How'd that go?" Sam said.
"Well, he gave me a call as soon as he got there, so he's probably fine." Geek said.
"Oh, alright." Sam said as he finished his coffee and breakfast. He got dressed in his usual outfit, and got in the DeSoto. After going towards the office at breakneck speeds, Sam parked near the office, and started heading up when he walked right into Sybil.
"Oh, sorry Sybil! Didn't see you there!" Sam said.
"Oh, hey Sam." Sybil said.
"What are you doing here?" Sam said.
"Oh you know, job of the week!" Sybil said.
"Let me guess, you're a stairway sweeper?" Sam said.
"Oh no, that was my job three weeks ago! I'm a knife saleswoman now! I was trying to sell some knives to Flint." Sybil said.
"And how'd that go?" Sam said.
"Well, he said I should stock some bowie knives, so I've got to go get a few of those now!" Sybil said.
"Alright then, see you later Sybil." Sam said as he started to walk up the stairs.
"Thanks Sam, happy birthday by the way." Sybil said as she exited the building. Sam then passed Flint Paper outside his office, getting his mail.
"Hey Flint, checking your mail?" Sam said.
"Oh hey Sam, yeah I am. Just making sure none of them are laced with anthrax." Flint said.
"You can never too careful." Sam said.
"Ain't that right." Flint said.
"Well, I got to get to the office." Sam said.
"Alright, talk to you later Sam." Flint said as he went back into his office. Sam entered the office, and noticed something was different about the office.
"Well, I don't remember us having a record player here. I don't remember the office looking this much like a detective novel." Sam said as he looked around. He then saw a note on the coat rack.
"Take off your hat and coat." Sam read the note. He recognized the handwriting. It was Max's. He did that, and sat down. He decided to turn the record player on. Smooth jazz went through the office, as all of a sudden, a person entered the office.
"Why hello there Mr. Detective!" The person said. Sam could recognize it was Max in a pink cocktail dress.
"What do you need toots?" Sam said in his best detective voice.
"I heard you're the best at finding things." Max said.
"Well that depends, what are you looking for?" Sam said.
"The man who stole my heart!" Max said.
"Could you give me a description ma'am?" Sam said.
"Well, he's a dog, he's tall, he's got brown fur, he likes eating fudge pops, he's got the best love handles, and he's just such a dork!" Max said.
"I think I can find him for you, how much you willing to pay?" Sam said.
"Oh, well, I don't have any money on me! Is there any other way I can pay?" Max said.
"Well, a kiss can do, you cute little rabbit." Sam said. Just then, Max pounced onto Sam, and the two made out passionately.
"Happy birthday Sam." Max said as he separated from Sam.
"Thanks little buddy." Sam said as Max got down from him.
"Glad you liked your surprise Sam!" Max said.
"It sure was great little buddy!" Sam said.
"I got another surprise for you! I pulled some strings from when I was president, and the highway's closed! We can go highway surfing!" Max said. Sam's eyes lit up once hearing that.
"Really?" Sam said.
"Yeah, and then we can do whatever you want! Oh, and we've got a hot date at Stinky's tonight!" Max said.
"Never use the words "hot date" together Max. But besides that, thanks little buddy, this is the best birthday I could ever have." Sam said.
"Aw, thanks Sammy." Max said as he pecked Sam on the check, Sam blushed as the two went to the DeSoto, ready for some highway surfing.
