“I’m sorry.” He whispered, and she looked at him as best she could. His mouth was downturned, his eyes still hidden from her. She didn’t understand what was happening, her mind racing to try to put the pieces together. Had this been his plan from the start? To bring her to this new world, wait until she was vulnerable, then kill her? Was he some old foe with a vendetta?
She searched what she could see of his face for a hint of recognition, but it was obscured as he turned her head upwards and leaned down, touching their lips for only the briefest of moments. Again, he whispered his apology against her mouth and her eyes grew wide with understanding.
No. He had not come to kill her. He was here for something much worse.
