Everything is better with you by my side

Summary:

“Your daddy just called me,” Hyunjin begins, and Jeongin’s eyes light up. “He said he and your other daddy are caught up in boring work stuff to help your uncle, and it’s taking longer than they hoped, so they let you have a sleepover at my house!”

Jeongin’s eyes widen and several emotions flash across his face, but it luckily doesn’t look like he’s all too sad about it. “A sleepover?”

“Yes! With me and my husband,” Hyunjin clarifies, and the realization that he has to explain the fact that Chan and Jisung’s kid will stay at their apartment for a day or two to Seungmin dawns upon him. He swallows and decides to deal with that later.

Or: Hyunjin, Jeongin's kindergarten teacher, has to babysit him last-minute together with his husband, Seungmin, but Seungmin doesn't think he's any good with kids. Hyunjin thinks otherwise.

Work Text:

Hyunjin is saying goodbye to all the kids and their parents at the end of the kindergarten day, when he notices that a certain set of parents is late. Jeongin’s parents. Jeongin is a sweet kid, and his two fathers are very sweet too, but it can sometimes happen that they’re late, though it’s never more than a few minutes. Jeongin doesn’t seem to mind spending some extra time with Hyunjin, though, and Hyunjin doesn’t mind spending some extra time with Jeongin, so that is good.

When more than ten minutes have passed, however, Hyunjin is getting a little worried. He subtly starts wrapping a few things up as Jeongin asks him if he knows when his daddies are coming, but he doesn’t know what to say. The little pout on Jeongin’s lips breaks Hyunjin’s heart a little, but fortunately he’s saved by his phone buzzing and the screen showing Chan’s number– Jeongin’s father.

“Ah! Your daddy is calling me right now, just a moment,” he tells the kid, who just nods and continues scribbling and drawing on a piece of paper. “Hello?”

“Hi, Hyunjin,” Chan’s voice sounds through the phone. Jeongin has been in Hyunjin’s kindergarten class for more than a year now, and Hyunjin knows his father pretty well, so they call each other by their first name. “Uhm, as you might have noticed, we haven’t come to pick up Jeongin yet– I hope you or Jeongin weren’t too worried, but, uhm, there has been a small family emergency, so we can’t come.”

“Oh my gosh, is everything okay?” Hyunjin gasps, his heart dropping, but Chan quickly assures him that their family is okay.

“Yes, all is fine, don’t worry. Just… Jisungie’s brother got into a bit of an accident while moving, and he doesn’t have anyone to help him but us,” Chan explains, and Hyunjin hums in understanding. “Jisung is with him at the hospital– he only has minor injuries, fortunately– but it’s a while away from where we live, and we have to help him finish up moving and make sure that he’s okay, which isn’t really something that will be fun or safe for Jeongin.”

Hyunjin hums again, he can definitely see why it wouldn’t be safe for Jeongin, but he’s wondering where this is going. “So who will pick Jeongin up?”

“Ah, yes… that’s the thing.” Chan chuckles awkwardly and Hyunjin has a hunch on what is coming. “Our babysitter is on vacation and our family can’t help either, so… yeah. Uhm– gosh, I don’t want to ask this of you, but…”

“Do you want me to babysit Jeongin?” Hyunjin asks, glancing over to the boy, who is still mindlessly scribbling.

“Well, yes– or at least find someone else to babysit him…” Chan trails off, his voice sounding apologetic. “I’m really so sorry for dumping this on you, Hyunjin. I– I tried everything, but it seems like everyone is busy today and tomorrow and you’re my last resort. If it’s really inconvenient we can just pick him up after all and figure something out, but—”

“I’ll do it,” Hyunjin cuts in. He feels for Chan, and he sees how it wouldn’t be ideal to let a six year old kid hang around people moving furniture and all. “It’s Friday anyway, so no work for me tomorrow, and we didn’t have any plans for the weekend either. For how long do you think Jeongin will need to stay?”

Chan is silent for a moment before he answers, probably stunned by Hyunjin’s willingness to help him. “Ah, we’ll try to be back as soon as possible, but it’ll probably be tomorrow evening at best. At worst it’ll be Monday morning when the babysitter will be back, but we’ll try to not let it come to that. Is it really no problem?”

“It isn’t,” Hyunjin assures more confidently than he actually feels, but Hyunjin thinks that he doesn’t really have another choice. “What should I tell Jeongin?”

“You can tell him that his daddies are doing boring work stuff to help out his uncle, he usually hates boring things, so I hope that will make him feel better that he has to stay with you for a day or two,” Chan chuckles dryly. “I have to go now, unfortunately, but I’ll text you any details on how we’re doing and things that might help in taking care of Jeongin– though I think you know how to do that pretty well. Anyway, I’ll try to check my phone often, so text me if anything happens or if you need more help, okay?”

“Sure thing. Good luck, Chan.”

Chan thanks him five times more before he finally hangs up and Hyunjin crouches in front of Jeongin, who looks up at him curiously.

First, take care of Jeongin.

“Will we have to do more exercises at your house, Mr. Hyunjin?” Jeongin then asks, and Hyunjin snickers at the fact that that’s the thing Jeongin is worried about.

He shakes his head. “Nope. At home I’m not Mr. Hyunjin anymore, I’m just Hyunjin, and you get to play!”

A bright smile takes over Jeongin’s face as he jumps up. “Yay! Let’s go then! I want to play with dolls! Do you have dolls at home, Mr. Hyunjin?”

Jeongin keeps on babbling as he puts on his jacket and Hyunjin finishes up his work at the kindergarten. He also lends some toys and children’s books to bring with him from the kindergarten before he guides Jeongin, who is still talking about what he wants to play, to his car, and Hyunjin guesses that he appreciates the fact that Jeongin is giving him lots of options to work with for things that they can do together to keep Jeongin happy, but he’s also worried that this will be harder than he thought it would be.

He isn’t sure if he even has many things for Jeongin to play with at home, even with the few toys he managed to lend from the kindergarten. He has plenty of art supplies and paper for Jeongin to work with, but he’s afraid that Jeongin will get bored of the familiar kindergarten toys… maybe Seungmin will let him play with Daengmo, Seungmin’s stuffed animal dog that he has ever since he was young. Hyunjin sighs behind the wheel, wondering what he has gotten himself into, but he tells himself that it’ll only be for two days at maximum, and he’s a somewhat experienced kindergarten teacher, so he’ll be able to improvise, right?

At home, Hyunjin shows Jeongin around, showing him the bathroom, the living room, and the guest room where he can play and where he will sleep. He immediately suggests if Jeongin wants to draw in the living room so that he can keep an eye on him, and fortunately the boy happily accepts and is all too awed by all the art supplies that Hyunjin has, even if Hyunjin only shows him the cheaper and less fancy ones.

In the meantime, Hyunjin prepares a snack for himself and Jeongin, some apple slices and other pieces of fruit, but he soon notices that they don’t really have a lot of kid-friendly food and other snacks at home, and they might not have enough for dinner either. Hyunjin was supposed to get some more groceries today, but he doesn’t know if it’ll be too overwhelming to bring Jeongin along for that too. Jeongin already has to deal with being at a new place without his parents, and he’s probably already tired from the day at the kindergarten, so will taking him along to do grocery shopping be too much?

Hyunjin sighs and runs a hand through his hair before he brings the fruit to Jeongin, who seems happy to get some food, but he also says that he would rather have a more yummy snack. Nevertheless, he eats the fruit as he clumsily tries to keep drawing at the same time, and Hyunjin has to tell him that he has to eat first before he can continue drawing, otherwise he’ll make a mess.

“Hey, Jeongin?” Hyunjin begins, deciding to ask Jeongin if he wants to go out to do groceries with him before he bothers Seungmin with it. Jeongin is already so immersed in drawing that he barely hears Hyunjin’s question, though, so Hyunjin doesn’t have a lot of hope for him wanting to go along. “Would you want to go out and go to the store with me? So that we can buy some yummy snacks for tomorrow?”

Jeongin shakes his little head as he keeps on drawing, probably not even having heard Hyunjin properly, so Hyunjin gives up and leaves Jeongin to peacefully draw by himself after softly praising Jeongin for the pretty drawing.

He decides that this is a good time to call Seungmin and ask him for advice and maybe to do the groceries. He’s nervous and he feels a bit guilty for having to ask Seungmin to do the groceries after work when it’s his job, but he knows that Seungmin will probably understand him. They always try to understand each other, even if it sometimes takes a while, but Seungmin’s kindness and understanding nature are part of the things Hyunjin loves most about his husband.

His heart pounds in his throat as he dials Seungmin’s number. He hasn’t been this nervous since he asked Seungmin out, or maybe he was this nervous when he proposed to Seungmin, even though he knew that Seungmin would say yes, since they discussed the option of getting married beforehand.

“Jinnie?” Seungmin sounds, and Hyunjin takes in a breath of surprise. “Hey, what’s up?”

“Uhm, hey, Minnie,” Hyunjin greets softly, chewing on his lip as he tries to think of how to bring this. “Do you have time to talk?”

“I am in between patients now, but I have a cavity to fill in fifteen minutes,” his husband explains, and Hyunjin curses softly. “What is it? Is everything alright?”

Seungmin sounds mildly concerned, which doesn’t help Hyunjin’s nerves.

“I– Uhm, yes, everything is fine, I guess. Where to start…” he trails off and sighs, just deciding to throw it out before he runs out of time to explain himself. “You know Jeongin? Chan and Jisung’s kid? Yeah, uhm, his parents have a minor family emergency to deal with so I agreed to take care of Jeongin for a day or two, so I didn’t have the opportunity to get any groceries yet, and we might have to buy some other things for him too, but I don’t want to overwhelm Jeongin with going out too much, so I was hoping that you could maybe do the groceries?” Hyunjin’s voice goes up in pitch as he finishes his ramble, and his shoulders are tense as he awaits Seungmin’s answer.

His husband is quiet for a moment, but Hyunjin can’t stand the silence, so he continues, “Chan sent me some things that Jeongin likes, food-wise, so I’ll text that to you too. I’m so sorry for dumping this on you while you’re at work, but Chan said that he didn’t have anyone else to turn to.”

Seungmin sighs from the other side of the line and Hyunjin swallows in guilt. “This… this is a lot to take in suddenly.”

“I know, I’m sorry, Minnie,” Hyunjin apologizes. “I can also still do the groceries when you get back from work, but then you’ll have to watch Jeongin for a second.”

“No, it’s fine,” Seungmin relents, but Hyunjin can hear that he isn’t really happy with this surprise. Hyunjin knows that Seungmin doesn’t really like not being prepared for things or being overwhelmed with new things all at once, so Hyunjin feels extra bad. “It’s sweet of you to help Chan and Jisung, Hyunjin. I– I’ll help. Could you send me the list of things that Jeongin likes?”

Hyunjin gasps and his insides warm up at how sweet his husband is being. He expected a bit more resistance or disappointment, but on the other hand he knows that Seungmin is always understanding, almost never blaming Hyunjin for anything. “Thank you, Minnie! Thank you so much, you’re amazing! You’re the sweetest and best and most awesome husband ever and I couldn’t have wished for anyone better to marry.”

Seungmin chuckles at Hyunjin’s dramatics and Hyunjin imagines him shaking his head. “Remember that you said that when I come home later.”

Hyunjin snorts, glad that Seungmin can joke around a little, but deep down Hyunjin is also a little bit worried, not about Seungmin getting mad at him necessarily– it takes a lot for Seungmin to get genuinely mad at him for more than a few minutes– but about stressing Seungmin out.

“Anyway, I have to go back to work.” Seungmin pulls him out of his thoughts. “I’ll see you later, with groceries and all.”

“See you later, Minnie. I love you so much.”

Seungmin huffs and pauses before he whispers, “I love you too.”  and hangs up.

Hyunjin busies himself playing with Jeongin– something that Hyunjin is confident in, given his job experience– until Seungmin comes back from work, with the groceries as he promised. Jeongin looks mildly startled by the sound of the front door opening, so Hyunjin quickly assures him that it’s just his husband coming home from work, which seems to calm Jeongin down.

Hyunjin jumps up to greet Seungmin and help him with the groceries, because he imagines that his husband might be tired and a bit stressed.

“Hey, Minnie.” He greets his husband with a loving kiss on the lips as he takes a grocery bag from him. “Thank you so much again. How was work?”

“It was fine,” Seungmin waves off, his stance a little tense and his eyes a bit distracted. “Uhm, let’s put away the groceries.”

“I’ll do it, you can go say hi to Jeongin! Get to know him?” Hyunjin suggests, and he grimaces when Seungmin’s face falls a little. “Jeongin is a sweetie! You’ll be fine! I’m sure you’ll warm up to each other.”

Seungmin shrugs as he lets out a sound that conveys that he isn’t so sure about it. “Just remember what you said to me over the phone,” is all he says, and Hyunjin huffs in amusement before they head to the living room to greet Jeongin, Hyunjin’s hand on the small of Seungmin’s back in a small gesture of support.

“Jeongin! Meet Seungmin, my husband,” Hyunjin announces happily as he encourages Seungmin to crouch by crouching himself, so that they’re eye to eye with Jeongin, who is sitting on the floor. Jeongin shyly waves at Seungmin, who awkwardly waves back. “Anyway, I’ll be in the kitchen for a bit. Uhm… Jeongin, why don’t you show Seungmin what you’ve drawn?”

That seems to make Jeongin a little less shy, and Seungmin seems genuinely impressed by Jeongin’s drawing too, so Hyunjin feels at ease as he puts away their groceries. He knows that Seungmin is insecure about his kid-skills, but Hyunjin believes in his husband, because Seungmin can be really funny and playful and mischievous much like Jeongin, but he just has to loosen up a little.

“Oh! That drawing is really pretty, Jeongin.” Hyunjin hears Seungmin say as he enters the living room again. “Just as pretty as Mr. Hyunjin.”

Hyunjin giddily smiles to himself as Seungmin says those words, but Jeongin only pulls an exaggerated disgusted face, which Hyunjin should have expected.

“But Mr. Hyunjin is ugly!” the boy exclaims, and Seungmin’s eyes comically widen and his mouth falls open in shock. Did I never tell Seungmin that Jeongin likes calling people, and especially me, ugly?

Seungmin turns to him when Hyunjin laughs and comes to sit beside them, and he looks at Hyunjin with an urgent look. “Does this kid need to get his eyes checked? Do we need to contact his parents about it?”

Hyunjin barks out a laugh and lightly pushes at Seungmin’s shoulder. “His eyesight is fine, don’t worry. He always calls me ugly.”

“Because you are!” Jeongin screams in delight, making Seungmin flinch at the volume, and Hyunjin’s hand immediately finds Seungmin’s back again as Jeongin giggles at himself. Hyunjin gives Jeongin a subtle look to tell him to keep his voice down, and Jeongin blushes and gives a small nod back.

“And what do you think about Seungmin, then?” Hyunjin asks, moving on with the conversation as he mindlessly rubs a hand over his husband’s back.

Jeongin hums and squints as Seungmin, giving him a once-over as he assesses him from head to toe. “He is ugly too.”

Hyunjin tries to hold back a laugh, but he still snorts as Seungmin huffs exasperatedly. Hyunjin sneakily leaves a kiss behind Seungmin’s ear before he whispers, “Don’t worry, that means he likes you.”

Seungmin scoffs, probably not believing Hyunjin, but Hyunjin thinks that Jeongin must already be a little comfortable with Seungmin to be able to call him ugly, even if it’s only because he’s Hyunjin’s husband.

“Anyway, do you want to tell us about your pretty drawing?” Hyunjin asks, and Jeongin’s eyes light up as he starts talking about the drawing he made of his daddies at their wedding. Hyunjin finds it pretty heartwarming, and he sees Seungmin smile softly too, so he nudges him to encourage him to talk to Jeongin too.

“Uhm– so, do you remember your daddies’ wedding well?” Seungmin asks, obviously not sure of what to say, but Hyunjin appreciates the effort.

“No!” Jeongin grins. “Their wedding is in the future.”

This is news to Hyunjin too, and he shares a surprised look with Seungmin. Hyunjin realizes that he never really asked about the relationship status of Jeongin’s parents. He remembers that only Chan and sometimes a babysitter came to pick Jeongin up from kindergarten the first half year or year or so, and later Jisung more frequently came too. The first time Jisung introduced himself as Chan’s friend, Hyunjin remembers, but maybe he just misheard the word “boyfriend”, because the second time he saw Jisung he was already acting lovey-dovey with Chan. Either way, Hyunjin didn’t know that they were planning on getting married.

“So your daddies are engaged?” Seungmin asks further, and Jeongin tilts his head in confusion.

“What is engage?”

"Uhm– when someone proposes to someone but they aren't officially married yet," Seungmin explains clumsily, but Jeongin only looks more confused. Hyunjin holds back his laughter as Seungmin sighs, obviously trying hard to come up with a good explanation of being engaged. "It's like a promise to get married."

Jeongin blinks at Seungmin, an empty look in his eyes. "My daddies are husbands."

"So they eloped without a wedding?" Seungmin tilts his head and Jeongin copies him exaggeratedly as Hyunjin is just watching in amusement.

"Envelope?" Jeongin looks positively perplexed.

Seungmin takes a deep breath to calm down, but he seems to want to keep on trying, which makes Hyunjin's heart melt a little.

"Do your daddies wear rings around their ring fingers?"

Jeongin hums in thought for a moment. "Right! Daddy always wears rings," he gasps and grabs a colored pencil to give his drawing of one of his daddies a stickman hand with rings (in other words, just a collection of lines with smaller lines as rings).

"Your other daddy doesn't wear any rings?" Seungmin asks, making Jeongin pause in thought before he shrugs, saying that he doesn’t know. Seungmin opens his mouth to ask more, but Jeongin is already immersed in improving his drawing, so Hyunjin nudges Seungmin to leave Jeongin for a bit.

Hyunjin leads Seungmin to the kitchen so that Seungmin can wind down a little from his already busy day and so that Hyunjin can get him something to drink and praise him for the effort he put into talking to Jeongin.

"Why are kids so hard to talk to?" Seungmin whines, and Hyunjin chuckles, kissing his cheek.

"They aren't if you set your expectations appropriately," Hyunjin teases lightheartedly as he gets some mugs and starts making some tea. "No, but you did well. It's the effort that counts."

"Yeah? You don't think that Jeongin thinks I'm weird?" Seungmin wonders as Hyunjin takes Seungmin into his arms, sensing his husband’s fatigue.

"Kids think of all adults as a whole different species, they will always think you're weird, even if they like you." Hyunjin cards a hand through Seungmin's hair, massaging the back of his head soothingly as they wait for the water to boil.

"Kids don't make sense," Seungmin mutters into Hyunjin's shoulder, and Hyunjin laughs.

"They feel the same way about us most of the time, but just be yourself, Minnie. I'm sure he'll like your playful side."

Seungmin nods and gives a noncommittal hum before the water is done boiling and Hyunjin hands Seungmin his mug of tea.

“Should we get started on making dinner?” Seungmin suggests as he sips on his tea, and Hyunjin agrees before they look at each other, silently asking who will be in charge of cooking. They usually like to do it together, and otherwise the one who has more energy does it, but right now Hyunjin doesn’t know what will be more tiring for Seungmin, cooking or hanging out with Jeongin.

“Oh! Jeongin is probably bored with drawing right now, so maybe you can go watch TV with him until dinner?” Hyunjin proposes. “That way you can rest while I make dinner, and you simultaneously watch Jeongin in case he needs something.”

Seungmin hums, taking another sip of his tea before he gives a lopsided smile. “Sure. That sounds like something I can handle.”

Hyunjin shakes his head and kisses his husband’s cheek. “I know that you can handle more than that, but I also know that you’re tired, so you should rest.”

Seungmin sighs and looks at Hyunjin with eyes sparkling in gratitude. “I love you, Hyunjin. Did you know that?”

“Yes. I’m a lot to put up with, yet you still do it.” Hyunjin puts his mug away so he can properly hug and kiss his husband. “And if that isn’t love…”

Seungmin snickers softly before he kisses Hyunjin back. “I would like to say that I also show it through other ways than just putting up with you, but okay, as long as you know it, it’s fine.”

Hyunjin grins widely and nuzzles his nose in the crook of Seungmin’s neck. “If I’d name all the things that you do that make me feel loved, we would be here until Jeongin’s parents come to pick him up.”

Seungmin just hums in response, and Hyunjin feels the skin under his nose heat up, which makes him smile. Even after all these years of being together, Seungmin gets flustered and doesn’t know what to say whenever Hyunjin tells him how much he loves him.

“Okay, I’ll go watch some TV with Jeongin,” Seungmin says after basking in Hyunjin’s warmth for another moment, finishing his tea. “Good luck making dinner.”

“Have fun watching TV with Jeongin.”

As soon as Seungmin enters the living room, though, Hyunjin hears his concerned voice, and he quickly checks on them to see that Jeongin accidentally colored the table with pencils and markers while coloring the background of his drawings.

“Oh, Jeongin, you colored on the table!” Seungmin sighs exasperatedly, and Jeongin pouts in guilt, softly apologizing as Seungmin turns to Hyunjin. “You didn’t think of giving him a placemat or something?”

“Uhm, whoops? Forgot?” Hyunjin blushes in embarrassment, feeling guilty for stressing Seungmin out even more. “I can clean it up—”

“No- it’s fine, just go make dinner,” Seungmin urges him with a tired look, and Hyunjin relents before he turns to Jeongin, who is still pouting, probably sensing the tense atmosphere.

“Hey, Innie, do you want to watch some TV before dinner?” he asks, successfully distracting him from the tense atmosphere as Jeongin happily jumps onto the couch and Hyunjin puts on a kids show.

He then rubs a hand over Seungmin’s back in hopes of calming his husband down a little before he heads to the kitchen again and starts preparing their dinner. That, fortunately, goes smoothly for Hyunjin and it seems to go smoothly for Seungmin and Jeongin too, because the only thing Hyunjin hears is the sounds of the TV and Jeongin laughing. He hopes that Seungmin takes that time to relax a little, and that Jeongin’s laugh can cheer him up a little.

Jeongin also seems to enjoy the dinner if the way he messily gobbles it up is anything to go by, and Seungmin seems to get some energy from the food as well even if he also looks a bit unhappy with Jeongin’s messiness. Hyunjin is really impressed by Seungmin's ability to suppress his negative feelings to keep Jeongin happy, and he really appreciates the fact that Seungmin tries so hard, especially because he isn't the biggest fan of kids. It makes Hyunjin feel a little less bad for accepting to take care of Jeongin.

"Was it yummy, Jeongin?" Hyunjin asks when they're done eating, and Jeongin eagerly nods, his whole face covered in sauce.

"Yes!" Jeongin beams with an adorable smile. "This is my favorite food!"

Hyunjin mirrors Jeongin’s infectious smile and redirects it at Seungmin too. "Seungmin bought it for us, so it's partly thanks to him."

"Thank you, Mr. Seungmin!" Jeongin cheers, and Seungmin softens a little.

"Well, it's Hyunjin who cooked it, so he's mostly to thank in my opinion," Seungmin says with a soft smile. "Thank you for cooking, Jinnie—"

Jeongin cheers again, but this time his arms knock over his drink, his glass almost rolling off the table if not for Seungmin's reflexes, but the contents spill all over Seungmin's clothes. Jeongin squeaks in surprise and Seungmin gasps, grimacing at the sticky liquid seeping into his clothes.

"I'm sorry!" Jeongin exclaims, quickly retracting his arms from where they were frozen in the air, but he manages to knock his cutlery off the table, and Hyunjin winces at the loud clattering.

"I–I'm going to get changed." Seungmin's voice sounds strained and Hyunjin wants to go after him, but he should clean up first.

"I'll go get some wipes to clean up," Hyunjin tells Jeongin, who is pouting at him. "Hey, Innie, it's okay, yeah? It can happen, it wasn't your intention, right?"

Jeongin nods slowly, but his pout doesn't disappear.

"Just be a little more careful next time, okay? Then you'll be fine." He ruffles the boy's hair to reassure him before he gets some paper towels and a wet cloth to clean up the liquid and traces of food that fell on the floor along with Jeongin’s cutlery.

Jeongin intently watches him clean up, and at first, Hyunjin is a little confused, but then he realizes what Jeongin might be thinking.

"Do you want to help me clean up?" Hyunjin asks, and Jeongin nods, accepting the paper towels that Hyunjin hands him.

"My daddy always says that it's good to clean up your own messes," Jeongin mutters as he pats the paper towels on the spilled liquid, and Hyunjin melts. Jeongin is really a sweet kid, and his fathers are raising him well. He can't help being clumsy or a little cheeky and mischievous, he's a kid! He’s still learning so much every day, but Hyunjin is sure that he'll grow up to be a good person.

When they're done cleaning up, Hyunjin notices that Seungmin isn't back yet. He heard the shower run for a while, but it's already been a few minutes since the water stopped running. Maybe Seungmin is just taking his time, but when he still isn't back when Jeongin has pulled out all the toys in the guest room in order to decide which one he wants to play with, Hyunjin gets a little worried.

"I'm going to check on Seungmin for a bit, okay?" Hyunjin tells Jeongin, but the boy is too immersed in his playtime to care, so Hyunjin just slips out of the room and heads toward his and Seungmin's bedroom.

"Minnie?" Hyunjin cracks the door open and sees Seungmin sitting curled up on the bed, his knees pulled up to his chest and his forehead leaning on them. "Oh my gosh– are you okay?"

Seungmin looks up at Hyunjin, who comes to sit next to him on the bed, and he shrugs. He looks so tired, it worries Hyunjin. "I… I'm just tired. I don't know if I can do this, Hyunjin."

"Hey, no, don't say that." Hyunjin brings up his hands to gently cup Seungmin's cheeks so that his husband is looking at him. "You are already doing so well! Not everyone is equally good with kids, which is okay, and I'm sorry that I dragged you into this—"

"Don't apologize, Hyunjin," Seungmin stops him with a small shake of his head. "You're doing Jeongin’s parents such a big favor. You did well by accepting to take care of Jeongin, and you take care of him well, but I— I struggle. Especially because I'm tired."

"That's only understandable." Hyunjin brushes his thumbs over Seungmin's cheeks lovingly. How could he ever blame his husband when he’s doing his best? "Remember when I struggled with the kids when I first started out as a kindergarten teacher? You encouraged me to be myself and just try to understand the kids, which really helped me. Granted, you don't have to become great with kids right now, but I know that if you let yourself go and just try to play and be silly with Jeongin, you'll get along fine."

Seungmin sighs and leans into Hyunjin's touch. "You're probably right, Jinnie, but can I try that tomorrow?"

"Of course, love." Hyunjin sweetly kisses him. "You deserve some rest. I'll go check on Jeongin again—"

Hyunjin turns to the door to find Jeongin standing in the doorway. "Oh, hey, Innie! What's up."

"Do you want to play with me?" Jeongin holds up some toys and Hyunjin stands up from the bed.

"Sure, Innie!" Hyunjin walks up to Jeongin, planning to head to the guest room, but Jeongin doesn't move.

"Mr. Seungmin isn't coming?" he asks, and Hyunjin has to hold back a coo. He shares a look with Seungmin, hoping to convey that Jeongin does already seem to like him, and Seungmin manages a small but touched smile.

He crouches next to Jeongin to face him before he says, "Seungmin is a little tired, so he doesn't want to play, but maybe tomorrow he will want to!"

"Oh, okay." Jeongin looks a little disappointed, making Hyunjin's heart clench.

"You know, he might not want to play with us right now, but you know what might make him feel a little better?" Hyunjin asks in a whisper, and Jeongin watches him curiously. "He was a little upset about the mess we made earlier, so maybe you can apologize and tell him that we cleaned it up nicely?"

Jeongin nods and heads over to Seungmin, who seems a little surprised by it.

"I'm sorry for making a mess, Mr. Seungmin," Jeongin says, and Seungmin looks between him and Hyunjin with wide eyes. "I helped Mr. Hyunjin clean up, and it's all clean now!"

Seungmin's lips curl up in a smile as Jeongin climbs up on the bed and hugs Seungmin, saying that hugs help his daddies when they're upset, and Hyunjin can see that Seungmin is endeared. Hyunjin is too.

"Thank you, Jeongin. I really appreciate that. You did well," Seungmin tells the boy softly, and Hyunjin gets a little emotional at the sight.

Jeongin grins in accomplishment before he jumps off the bed and drags Hyunjin with him to go play. There's already a mess of toys in the guest room, so it's good that Seungmin isn't going to play with them right now, but Hyunjin feels like tomorrow things will be better, especially thinking about Seungmin and Jeongin’s hug just now.

Jeongin has a lot of energy, but Hyunjin manages to get it out of him by playing wild adventures with the toys and letting him jump on the bed (he’s light enough not to break anything). It’s tiring for Hyunjin too, especially because he had to deal with his worries for Seungmin as well, and he feels a bit defeated when Jeongin doesn’t want to go to sleep and Hyunjin realizes that they don’t have pajamas for him, but he feels a tiny bit of hope when he remembers that Seungmin brought a toothbrush and toothpaste for kids from his work.

“Jeongin, let’s get into bed and let me read you a story, okay?” Hyunjin tries again after Jeongin has brushed his teeth, but Jeongin is pouting, clasping a toy tightly in his hand.

“Can’t we play for longer?” Jeongin whines. “And I want my Foxie…”

Hyunjin sighs, he understands that it’s difficult for Jeongin to sleep in an unfamiliar place, having to wear an oversized shirt from Hyunjin instead of his own pajamas, and having to sleep without his favorite stuffed animal, but hopefully it’s only for today. Maybe he can convince Seungmin to let Jeongin have Daengmo for the night.

“Wait here, Innie, I’ll be back.” He stands up and searches for his husband, finding him reading in the living room with a cup of tea. He looks peaceful, much to Hyunjin’s relief. “Minnie?”

Seungmin looks up, looking at Hyunjin through his reading glasses with a curious look. Hyunjin always loves how Seungmin’s reading glasses look on him.

“Yeah? How is it going with Jeongin?” Seungmin puts his book away and takes off his glasses before turning to Hyunjin.

“It’s going alright. Although, he doesn’t really want to go to sleep. He misses his stuffed animal…” And probably his parents, too. Hyunjin comes to sit next to Seungmin on the couch and lays a hand on top of his husband’s thigh. “Would… would you be willing to lend him Daengmo for the night?”

Seungmin’s eyes widen, but he gives in more easily than Hyunjin had expected. He looks a tad reluctant, but nevertheless he agrees. “Sure, I guess. As long as he’s careful with him.”

“Thank you, Minnie. You’re a sweetheart.” He pecks his husband on his lips and takes a moment to caress his cheek with the back of his hand, just to show how grateful he is, before he has to return to getting Jeongin into bed.

Jeongin eventually accepts to lie in bed when Hyunjin gives him Daengmo, and he looks determined as he promises to take good care of it for Seungmin, which makes Hyunjin feel a bit more at ease. Jeongin still looks a little uneasy as he gets into bed, but Hyunjin hopes that he will get tired after Hyunjin is done reading to him.

Indeed, Jeongin relaxes a little as Hyunjin reads to him in a hushed voice, and he properly lies down, his eyes lidded as he looks tired. Hyunjin slowly closes the book and ruffles Jeongin’s hair.

“Good night, Jeongin. Sleep well,” he whispers as Jeongin nods sleepily.

“Mr. Seungmin won’t wish me good night?” he asks softly, and Hyunjin softens and smiles.

“Do you want that?” He soothingly cards a hand through Jeongin’s hair as the kid nods again.

“My daddies always both wish me good night,” Jeongin explains, and Hyunjin stands up to get Seungmin.

“Is he in bed?” Seungmin asks once Hyunjin appears in the living room.

“Yes, but he wants you to say good night to him before he sleeps,” Hyunjin says, and Seungmin frowns incredulously.

Me? ” He points at himself and Hyunjin snickers as he pulls Seungmin off the couch.

“Yes, you. He’s used to two daddies wishing him good night.”

Seungmin “ah”s in understanding as he lets Hyunjin take him to the guest room. Hyunjin says good night to Jeongin again before Seungmin gently pats Jeongin’s shoulder on the covers as he wishes him good night too. That seems to satisfy Jeongin, because he closes his eyes and seems to be trying to fall asleep.

They stay for a minute, making sure that Jeongin stays put in his bed and actually tries to sleep, before they head back to the living room together. Once they’re cuddled up on the couch together, Seungmin cups Hyunjin’s jaw and kisses him sweetly, taking him by surprise a little. Hyunjin doesn’t complain, though, he gladly kisses his husband back, finally letting himself relax for a bit again, melting in Seungmin’s arms as Seungmin’s fingers massage the back of his head. Hyunjin’s insides warm up and it feels like his nerves are set on fire with how lovingly Seungmin drags his lips over his, and although they kiss often, Hyunjin feels some extra urgency in the way Seungmin kisses him, leans closer when Hyunjin holds his waist, and deepens the kiss as soon as Hyunjin’s mouth falls open to invite him in.

“Mmh… What did I do to deserve this treat?” Hyunjin mutters against Seungmin’s lips, stealing another kiss from his husband’s soft lips.

“Be the sweetest, best, and most amazing husband,” Seungmin answers with a grin, and Hyunjin chuckles, rubbing his nose against Seungmin’s.

“I thought that was you?”

Seungmin pulls back a bit and shrugs, threading his fingers through Hyunjin’s hair with a tender smile. “Maybe I’m that for you, and you’re that for me.”

“Aww, I like that. I agree.” Hyunjin pecks Seungmin’s cheek before he turns away and lays his head on Seungmin’s ever-so-comfortable shoulder.

“Really, though. You’re doing great with Jeongin,” Seungmin continues as his arm curls around Hyunjin’s back and his hand settles on his waist, and Hyunjin nuzzles closer in giddiness. “You barely had any time to prepare for having to babysit either, yet you successfully took care of Jeongin and me today.”

Hyunjin huffs out a laugh and bumps his shoulder against Seungmin’s, feeling a bit embarrassed because of the compliments, but also very flattered and loved. “It’s my job as a kindergarten teacher to take care of kids, and it’s my job as your husband to take care of you, so it’s all fine. Though I am tired right now.”

“Understandable. Let’s make it an early night tonight?”

Hyunjin agrees, and they watch a no-brainer drama on TV with the volume low so as to not wake Jeongin up. Hyunjin almost falls asleep on Seungmin’s shoulder, dozing off a little until he hears the faint sound of a door opening. Hyunjin sits more upright, and he looks around as his brain tries to catch up to reality until he sees Jeongin shuffling into the room, holding Daengmo tightly.

“What’s up, Innie?” Hyunjin asks, his voice low and a bit rough from sleepiness.

“Can’t sleep.” Jeongin pouts. “I miss my daddies.”

Hyunjin is pretty sure he feels his heart crack in his chest at Jeongin’s sad eyes, so he pats between him and Seungmin on the couch as Seungmin turns off the TV. Jeongin comes to sit between them and Hyunjin soothingly caresses the back of his head.

“Don’t worry, you can see your daddies soon again,” he assures. “Especially if you manage to sleep through the night.”

Jeongin nods, but he still looks sad. “But I can’t sleep.”

Hyunjin hums in thought, mindlessly trying to calm Jeongin down by massaging the back of his head. Helping kids sleep isn’t part of his job description, so he doesn’t really know how to do this.

“What do your daddies usually do when you can’t sleep?” Seungmin softly speaks up, and Hyunjin lets out a little breath of relief. Seungmin was always better at being sensible than Hyunjin, so Hyunjin appreciates it.

“They always sing for me,” Jeongin answers, and Hyunjin gasps softly, looking at Seungmin with big sparkling eyes. That is the perfect job for Seungmin! If there’s anyone who has the voice of an angel that can soothe any mind and lull anyone to sleep, it’s Seungmin. When Seungmin sang at their wedding, Hyunjin positively burst into tears because of how beautiful it was and how touched he was. Hyunjin will never shut up about how much he loves his husband’s voice.

Seungmin looks at him with a hesitant look, though, and Hyunjin grabs his hand and tries to convey through his expression that he thinks that he at least should try.

“Seungmin really likes singing, would you want him to sing for you?” Hyunjin suggests, squeezing Seungmin’s hand in support.

“Yes.” Jeongin looks up at them with a hopeful look, and Hyunjin hopes that it encourages Seungmin as much as it does for Hyunjin.

Seungmin softens and nods. “Sure. I can do that.”

They head to the guest room again and tuck Jeongin in. Seungmin asks him if Jeongin has any songs that his parents often sing, but Jeongin says that they sing lots of songs, so Seungmin can just pick one himself. Seungmin hums in thought for a second before he slowly starts singing. Hyunjin immediately recognizes the song as the song that Seungmin sang at their wedding, and the one they danced to at their wedding– their song as Hyunjin likes to call it.

He gets a little emotional as he rubs his hand over the covers and over Seungmin’s back, listening to his husband singing Jeongin to sleep. As expected, Jeongin slowly starts dozing off to Seungmin’s beautiful singing, and by the time the song is over, Jeongin seems to be fast asleep, and Hyunjin might have shed a tear or two.

“Jinnie?” Seungmin looks a bit startled when he sees Hyunjin’s touched expression and teary eyes. “Is everything okay?”

Hyunjin nods and drags Seungmin out of the room so that they won’t wake up Jeongin. Once they’re out of the room, Hyunjin pushes Seungmin against the wall and kisses him passionately, making his husband gasp in surprise.

“I just love you so much,” he answers as they part, and he leans his forehead against Seungmin’s. "I don't know if I could've sung Jeongin to sleep like that. You really can do everything that I can't, and then so much more. You complement me so well, I love you."

"Hyunjin…" Seungmin slumps against the wall, sounding moved by Hyunjin’s words. "I should be saying that about you, with what you've done today."

"You don't have to say it for me to feel it," Hyunjin assures with a slow kiss. He means that, but he also knows that Seungmin was tired today, and there is no time limit to showing gratitude.

Seungmin kisses him one more time before they get ready for bed too, Hyunjin texting updates to Chan. Chan texts back that things went smoothly for them today too, and that he hopes to be able to pick Jeongin up tomorrow evening already, but that he'll know that for sure by tomorrow afternoon. Hyunjin hopes that Jeongin can be reunited with his parents soon too, but it also won’t be the end of the world if Jeongin has to stay a little longer, because even when they were tired and unprepared, they did well, and Hyunjin likes the way Seungmin cuddles with him with a little extra love before they fall asleep.

The next morning, Jeongin wakes up with a lot of energy. It seems like he’s a bit of a morning person, so Hyunjin is glad that he and Seungmin went to bed early. Seungmin also seems to have woken up with lots of energy, and he almost immediately tries getting along with Jeongin again, like Hyunjin suggested yesterday. Jeongin all but squeaks with laughter when Seungmin starts making silly faces and weird noises. It’s a heartwarming sight.

“You’re so ugly!” Jeongin claps in delight, wheezing with laughter, and Hyunjin can’t help but feel absolutely endeared. He knew that Seungmin would be able to get along with Jeongin, but he didn’t expect it to go this smoothly once Seungmin would let loose a little and show his silly side. Today is going to be good, Hyunjin thinks.

They decide to go to the playground nearby to kill some time and they bring some sandwiches and drinks to have a picnic in the park later too. Jeongin happily runs around, playing on the playground equipment and asking Hyunjin to push him on the swing.

Seungmin is fondly watching Hyunjin push a happily squealing Jeongin for a while until he decides to join Jeongin on the swings. Hyunjin is pleasantly surprised to see Seungmin having fun too, and it kind of feels like Seungmin is Jeongin's big brother.

"I'm swinging higher than you, Mr. Seungmin!" Jeongin exclaims victoriously, making Seungmin laugh.

“That’s because you have Hyunjin to push you!” Seungmin nevertheless tries to compete, throwing his legs back and forth to create more momentum and swing higher.

Seungmin ends up coming close to rivaling the height at which Jeongin is swinging, but Hyunjin keeps on diligently pushing Jeongin, so Jeongin claims the victory when Seungmin sees that Hyunjin’s arms are getting tired and they decide to stop. Jeongin then finds a friend of his to play with for a while, and Hyunjin recognizes the parents, so he strikes up a small conversation with them for a bit, keeping Chan and Jisung’s situation vague when they ask why he’s with Jeongin instead of his parents.

“You’re a traitor of a husband, did you know that?” Seungmin whispers when Jeongin’s friend’s parents are helping their daughter onto one of the pieces of equipment. Hyunjin can hear the grin in Seungmin’s voice, so he knows that his husband is in a mischievous (and good) mood.

Hyunjin turns to Seungmin and swings his arms around his waist. “Yeah? Because I didn’t push you on the swings?”

Seungmin nods resolutely. “It was a very important competition, and you helped my opponent instead of me!”

Hyunjin snorts and chuckles, nuzzling his nose against Seungmin’s, happy that Seungmin feels comfortable enough to be silly again. “Sorry, I promise to make it up to you, so be prepared to be pampered and smothered and flooded with love later.”

Seungmin huffs out a surprised laugh, tilting his head in mild confusion at the sudden promise of affection.

“Because you’re suddenly doing so well with Jeongin!” Hyunjin explains, and Seungmin seems to get a little shy at the praise.

“I just… yesterday I was just too tired to deal with everything.” His husband shrugs. “Today I am both mentally prepared for things, I have your supportive words from yesterday in my head, and a little bit of confidence from singing to Jeongin yesterday. And I think I just work well with Jeongin.”

“I think you do too,” Hyunjin agrees and sneakily kisses behind Seungmin’s ear. “Just like you do with me.”

“Hmm… I’m not so sure about that…” Seungmin muses with a cheeky grin and Hyunjin barks out a laugh, pushing his husband’s shoulder.

“Hey, I—” Hyunjin stops when they hear Jeongin shriek, and Hyunjin whips himself around to see Jeongin slip off the monkey bars. Hyunjin isn’t fast enough to catch the boy, so Jeongin lands on his hands and knees before Hyunjin is by his side.

His heart breaks when tears well up in Jeongin’s eyes, so he quickly pulls the boy into his arms. “Are you okay, Jeongin? Did you hurt yourself?”

“Y-yes,” Jeongin whimpers with a wavering voice, a sob escaping his lips before he takes a deep breath. “My hands and knees hurt. But— But I am a big boy.”

“Yes, you are. It’s okay to cry, though.” Hyunjin pulls back to examine Jeongin and sees that he has some scrapes on his hands and knees, but nothing too bad, only a little blood on his right knee. Thank goodness they put rubber tiles under the monkey bars.

Jeongin sniffs and wipes his tears away as he sits on Hyunjin’s knee and Hyunjin soothingly cards a hand through his hair. Jeongin is already calming down a little, probably because the burn and sting from his scrapes are fading a little, and Hyunjin lets out a breath of relief. He feels a bit bad for being distracted and not watching Jeongin properly, but fortunately things didn’t go catastrophically wrong.

“Don’t worry, Jeongin, let me treat that wound for you, okay?” Seungmin approaches them with a first aid kit, and Hyunjin wonders how Seungmin got that so quickly. Seungmin gets out the disinfectant as Jeongin’s friend comes to ask if he’s okay. That together with Hyunjin holding Jeongin’s hand help him through the sting of the disinfectant on his knee before Seungmin places a bandaid on it.

“There you go, all done.” Seungmin pats Jeongin’s leg with a smile. “You did well, Jeongin.”

Jeongin nods, beaming at them shyly yet proudly. “Can I go play again, now?”

Hyunjin snickers and pats Jeongin’s head fondly, glad that he got over the scare of falling quickly. “Sure, you can play for a bit longer until we’ll have the picnic, yeah?”

“Yes!”

With that, Jeongin is off to play with his friend again, and Hyunjin turns to Seungmin.

“Did you bring the first aid kit in the picnic basket?”

Seungmin nods with a grin. “Yup. I remembered that as a kid, my parents always brought a first aid kit when we went to the playground because I always got upset if we had to go home early whenever I hurt myself.”

Hyunjin snorts and raises an eyebrow. “How often did you hurt yourself?”

“Not that often!” Seungmin laughs. “My parents just wanted to be prepared ever since I threw a fit once.”

“Ah.” Hyunjin snickers and kisses Seungmin’s cheek. “Well, either way, I’m glad that you’re always somehow prepared for the things that I’m not prepared for.”

“The feeling is mutual,” Seungmin answers with a loving twinkle in his eyes, and Hyunjin softens, wondering what he did to deserve Seungmin as his husband.

Once Jeongin’s friend leaves, they walk to the park to have their picnic, and Hyunjin receives a text from Chan that Jisung’s cousin managed to free some time to help out, so they can come to pick up Jeongin in a few hours already. Hyunjin is happy about it, but he also wouldn’t have minded taking care of Jeongin for a few hours more. Seungmin also has a bittersweet glint in his eyes, probably a bit bummed that just now that he’s warmed up to Jeongin, he has to say goodbye again.

They spend those few hours relaxing at home and doing Jeongin's favorite activity, drawing, and Hyunjin contemplates gifting a few of his art supplies to Jeongin. They make a game of drawing each other, and Hyunjin cackles at Seungmin's horrific drawings.

Just when Hyunjin is risking his life by saying that Jeongin won from Seungmin again, the doorbell rings, signaling that Chan and Jisung have arrived. Jeongin immediately perks up, knowing that his parents would come soon.

"Daddy!" Jeongin jumps into Chan's arms as soon as the door opens.

"Innie!" Chan happily catches him and Jisung ruffles his hair fondly. "Did you have a good time with Hyunjin and his husband?"

"Yes! Mr. Hyunjin and Mr. Seungmin were really nice!" Jeongin nods eagerly, already starting to tell his fathers about everything he'd done together with them. "And Mr. Seungmin was so ugly!—"

"Jeongin! What did we say about calling people ugly?" Chan scolds, but Seungmin intervenes.

"It's fine. Hyunjin told me that he only says it to people he likes," Seungmin chuckles. "He behaved well."

"Really? I'm so proud of you, you little rascal!" Jisung praises, tickling Jeongin a little, making him squeal.

"Yes, well done, Innie," Chan agrees before he turns to Hyunjin and Seungmin, still carrying Jeongin in his arms. "Really. Thank you two so much for taking care of Jeongin for the day on such incredibly short notice, you really saved us a lot of trouble." He hands Jeongin over to Jisung and gets out his wallet. "How much would be sensible? Uhm—"

"Whoa— wait, you want to pay us?" Hyunjin is a little surprised, so he shares a look with Seungmin, who shrugs.

"Well— how else should we repay you?" Chan asks, looking a little stumped too.

"I don't really need repayment?" Hyunjin says slowly. "I honestly mostly had fun watching Jeongin. What about you, Seungmin?"

"It was difficult at first, but I eventually had fun too," Seungmin answers with a satisfied smile. "I don't think a payment is necessary. Consider the saved money a gift from us for your engagement and wedding."

Hyunjin gasps and agrees with a smile, but Chan and Jisung only frown, their eyes widening and their ears reddening.

"E-Engagement? Wedding?" Jisung stutters in surprise, and Hyunjin now notices that neither of them is wearing a ring around their ring finger. Oh.

"Jeongin, did you tell people that we're getting married again?" Chan puts his hands in his sides, but his red cheeks make him look a bit less stern and intimidating than he’s probably wanting to.

"Yes, because you're husbands!" Jeongin confirms confidently, making his fathers sputter.

“We’re– we’re not officially husbands, Innie,” Jisung corrects him and whispers something in Jeongin’s ear. “Not yet, I…”

Hyunjin can’t hear it well, but also from the way Chan is eyeing Jisung and fidgeting with his hands, he gets the feeling that both Chan and Jisung are thinking about maybe getting engaged, or at least talking about the option. He’ll probably hear about it from Jeongin or Chan or Jisung eventually.

“Either way, we had a pretty fun time with Jeongin, so no payment needed,” Seungmin continues, getting the conversation back on track.

“Yes, if you ever need a last-minute babysitter again, you have my number,” Hyunjin adds and Seungmin clears his throat.

“Well, maybe try to make it a little less last-minute if that’s possible,” he says, and Hyunjin agrees with a chuckle. “But yes, I’m not opposed to babysitting Jeongin once in a while.”

“Sure. Jeongin would probably like that too.” Chan rubs a hand over his kid’s back as Jeongin nods. “But then I insist on paying you.”

“We’ll see. This one’s a favor. On the house, if you will,” Hyunjin waves off and swings an arm around Seungmin.

“Again, thank you two so much, and have a nice evening for the rest of the day!” Jisung tells them before they say their goodbyes, waving at Jeongin.

“Wow,” Hyunjin sighs once he closes the door.

“You could say that.” Seungmin snickers before Hyunjin clamps himself onto Seungmin, his arms around his shoulders, and his chin hooked over them. “This was… an experience, but it went better than I thought.”

“I think that goes for both of us.” Hyunjin kisses Seungmin’s ear and softly nips at his lobe. “I really liked seeing this new side of you, Minnie. Even at this point in our relationship, you keep surprising me with how amazing you are.”

Hyunjin can see Seungmin’s ears flush as his husband sighs lovingly, and Hyunjin grins, happy that he can still affect his husband like this.

“It’s because of you,” Seungmin whispers ever so softly, and Hyunjin takes in a breath, not having expected this sudden attack on his heart, this sudden shift to a more intimate mood, but Hyunjin guesses that he started it himself. “I couldn’t have done this without you.”

“Seungmin…” Hyunjin mutters, feeling his chest getting filled up with love, his throat closing up a little and his eyes getting teary. He pulls back to see Seungmin’s eyes glimmer with the same emotions that Hyunjin feels, and he can’t help but kiss his husband tenderly, otherwise he’ll definitely cry.

“I couldn’t have done this without you either,” Hyunjin breathes against Seungmin’s lips, just to assure him that the feeling is completely mutual, as everything between them seems to be.

Seungmin chases his lips again, gently nibbling on Hyunjin’s lower lip before he continues in a hushed voice, “Maybe I bring out the best in you like you do with me, then.”

Hyunjin whimpers and almost desperately kisses Seungmin again, feeling like he’ll explode from how much he’s feeling. “I love you so damn much, Seungmin, one day I’ll succumb to how much I love you.”

Seungmin chuckles softly, swallowing and breathing out as his eyes sparkle while looking at Hyunjin. “I love you too, Hyunjin. So much.”

They stay in each other’s arms for a while more, basking in the warm feelings they have for each other, the comfort they find in each other, until they both feel like they let it all out enough to be able to manage the feelings again.

“So, what do you think about adoption?” Hyunjin teases, and Seungmin barks out a laugh.

“I love you, Hyunjin, but no thanks.” He shakes his head and pecks Hyunjin’s lips. “Let’s keep it at babysitting Jeongin once in a while. I already have my hands full with you.”

Now Hyunjin barks out a laugh and lightly headbutts his husband. “Says you, the self-proclaimed ‘still a teenager’.”

Seungmin just cheekily grins before he pulls him to the kitchen, saying that there is dinner to be made. Hyunjin follows him with a chuckle and an exasperated shake of his head, his chest feeling light and fluttery as he thinks about the past day.

And if the rest of the day is also filled with smiles, kisses, and whispered compliments, their happiness from before still lingering, and they talk about their favorite moments from the past day as they fall into bed that night, then that is for only them to know, and maybe Jeongin, to whom Hyunjin gushes the next Monday.

The end.
