I Dreamt of You Again

Summary:

Sanford recalls a memory of him and his partner.

Notes:

this is just something short i wrote a bit ago for the febuwhump prompt “i dreamt you were alive”

Work Text:

“You ever wonder what’s gonna happen to us if we win?” Deimos asked him one day out of the blue, while they were stargazing.

When we win, Deimos,” Sanford replied, tilting his head. “Gotta be optimistic.”

“You know what I mean, though.”

Sanford paused, thinking. It would be a lie if he said that he’d never thought about a nice future with the two of them.

“Dunno,” he said honestly. “I guess I always pictured something like… You and I get a nice house together, and maybe a dog or somethin’…”

Deimos smiled at him, leaning his head against his partner’s shoulder. “Yeah?”

“Yeah. I’d take you to meet my mom,” he told him, then stopped for a moment, pondering. “She’d love you, I already know that.”

“Gee, I get to meet your mom?” Deimos asked, looking up at Sanford. “Guess we’re serious serious now, huh?”

Sanford laughed at his boyfriend’s comment. “Of course we are, chucklehead,” he said, and took Deimos’ hand in his, lacing their fingers together. “We’re practically married at this point.”

Deimos let out a little snicker. “Where’s our wedding, then, huh?” he joked, but Sanford just smiled, thinking about how nice that would be.

“When we get out of this whole mess,” he started, squeezing Deimos’ hand gently. “We’ll have a nice wedding, you and me. All fancy and everything.”

“Sanford!” Deimos gasped dramatically. “Are you… proposing to me?”

Sanford felt his face flush as he smiled. Even if Deimos had said it as a joke, it was pretty much what he had been implying.

“Did ya want something more dramatic?” Sanford asked, raising an eyebrow humorously. “I can do it again, if needed. I’ll get down on one knee and everything.”

That made deimos cackle, and he leaned against his partner, hugging his arm. “Nah, that was fine,” he chuckled, then paused for a moment.

“I love you, y’know?” Deimos told him.

Sanford laughed. “Of course I know,” and turned, scooping him into a hug. “You tell me every chance you get!”

“Hey, you never know when you might forget,” Deimos retorted. His voice softened a bit, as he continued. “And I never know when I might lose you.”

Sanford cupped his partner’s face in his hands gently, giving him a reassuring smile.

“Don’t you worry,” he told his partner. “We’ll both get through this safe, alright?”

Deimos’ face lit up as he smiled again, his eyes a bit wet from tears. “Yeah, we will,” he assured him. Leaning forward, the two of them shared a kiss, arms wrapped around each other, as if this moment was their last.

“I love you,” Deimos repeated, resting his forehead against his partner’s.

    “I love you too, Dei.”

“Sanford,” said a voice, which snapped him out of his dream. Briefly, he thought it was Deimos, but as the memories of the past few days came back to him, he knew there was no way it could be him.

Sanford. Wake up,” they said, shaking him not-so-gently.

Sanford opened his eyes and sat up, blinking. The person who had woken him was Hank, who sat next to him with a blank expression, as usual.

“Why’d you wake me up?” asked Sanford, a little peeved because of it. He recalled his dream; a memory with Deimos, and frowned, turning away.

“You were crying,” Hank stated flatly, not even trying to sound sympathetic.

Sanford pushed his glasses up, wiping his eyes. They were indeed wet from tears, albeit the left one was also wet from that unknown black substance that had stained his face.

“Oh,” was all he said in response. He stared at his hands, trying to recall every last detail of his memory.

After a moment, Hank abruptly interrupted his thoughts once again. “We should get going,” he said. “Doc is waiting.”

Sanford looked up, recalling what exactly they had been doing. They were traveling back to the base to regroup, after fighting the Auditor and Tricky. They had stopped in the middle of the night for some rest, as Sanford was the only one who was able to drive the car, due to Hank’s new increased size. Sanford wasn’t even sure Hank needed rest anymore.

“Right,” Sanford confirmed with a nod. He tried to empty his mind of the memory. There was no time for that, now.

“Let’s get going, then,” he said, and they were off.
