Quarter Past

Summary:

This is the sequel to Triangulate. Kara has anxiety over Alex denying their bond while Alex is determined to prove she’s right about them not being bond mates. Lena is trying to keep Kara together while struggling with her attraction to Alex.

Notes:

I don’t own these characters; DC/the CW does.

A/N: this is the sequel to Triangulate, making it an unexpected series. This one offers more plot than sex, but there is still the emotional turmoil you’ve come to expect. There’s a lot more SuperCorp and Kalex moments along with AgentCorp moments, even though Alex tries really hard not to let those happen. This story earns its rating in this first chapter. I hope you enjoy it. Come say hi to me on Facebook for more information about this story and my other works.

Chapter 1: Put Forth

Chapter Text

Quarter Past

1: Put Forth

Alex was at lunch with Vasquez, sitting at a cafe down the street from L-Corp. Alex was tempted to tell her about the touch of madness that infected Kara, and possibly Lena, the idea of them being a throuple… trio? She was not quite sure of the terminology. But, Vasquez had a lot to say today, which saved Alex from herself. She knew the right thing to do and had done it, but for some reason, she needed affirmation. They were the crazy ones, not her. Nobody shared a mate.

“You okay, Danvers?” Vasquez asked, waving around a thick, steak cut french fry. Her turkey sandwich was mostly eaten already.

Alex blinked. “Yeah, sorry I zoned out on you.”

Vasquez laughed. “I didn’t think Lucy beating me at the range would bore you so much.”

“No, it’s just been a wild four days.” Alex blew out a breath. It was hard to believe it had only been four days. Then, it hit her brain what Vasquez said. She shook her head. “Wait a second, you let Lane score higher than you?” She pointed across the table.

Vasquez rolled her eyes and ate her fry in an angry bite. “Believe me, there was no ‘let’ involved. I don’t know how it happened.” She threw her hands up. “Anyway, think you can sneak off early to go to the range with me? Help me see what I might’ve done wrong. I can’t lose to her twice or I’ll have to wear an apron around the house and I do not look good in one.”

Alex snickered. “I would pay to see that, but I’d pay even more to see you take Lane down. I’ll tell Lena about leaving early.”

“Your relationship has improved with her leaps and bounds if you can approach her and tell her things.”

Alex nodded. “Believe me, I know. We’ve talked, several times, and you know about the lunches and stuff.” She glanced down at her own food, her half-eaten grilled chicken wrap and fries. I can’t believe these people have me eating lunch.

Vasquez ate a few more of her fries. “Got things sorted?”

Alex scoffed. “I don’t think I’ll ever have things sorted with her.” There was always something new.

Vasquez opened her mouth, but before she could say anything, three women wandered over to their table. They worked at L-Corp. At least two were scientists, but Alex was not familiar enough with the third to place her.

“Hello, Doctor Danvers,” a brunette who was possibly named Keanna. Alex tried not to pay too much attention to the other scientists around L-Corp or she would lose her mind to their high school behavior. Even the way Keanna stared at her now with dismissive dark brown eyes was more than Alex wanted to deal with.

“Doctor Mitchell,” Alex replied with a slight bow of her head as a greeting. She would like to think being civil to the group would get them to go away sooner and she could get back to the real problem of the day where Vasquez somehow lost at shooting to Lane and they needed to sort that out.

“We’re sorry to interrupt, but this is Doctor Fatinah Veda. She just got hired in our division and wanted to meet you, Doctor Danvers.” The sneer was ignored as was the way she said Alex’s title dismissively.

Alex arched her eyebrow and turned to the woman she did not recognize. She was petite, with waves of ebony hair and bronze skin. Beautiful did not come close. “Pleasure to meet you.” She extended her hand.

Fatinah grabbed her hand with both of hers and grinned. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve read so much of your parents’ work.” The other two snickered. One of the funniest things about Alex around L-Corp was how much better her parents were and what a disappointment she had to be for publishing and accomplishing so little. Little do they know I was a disappointment for very different reasons.

Alex nodded. “Of course you have.” She eased her hand back.

“I was so surprised to find out their daughter worked at L-Corp! You must have so much going on.” Fatinah oozed positive energy and smiled like she actually cared.

“Too much,” Vasquez muttered. Alex glared at her and suddenly Vasquez’s lunch was interesting to her.

“Maybe I can pick your brain later on about your parents’ work or even your work. I have so many questions,” Fatinah said, bouncing on her heels.

“I’m sure I won’t be able to stop you,” Alex replied. Farewells were said and the trio continued on their way. Alex fought the urge to curl her lip. What was that about? No one at L-Corp was below a laugh at her expense.

Vasquez could not help a chuckle. “That’s probably going to bite you in the ass later on.”

Alex shrugged. “Everything at L-Corp usually does.”

“True. At least you’re being well paid for it. And you’re now being paid for both jobs.”

True, even though she was still exhausted. L-Corp security was finally looking up to snuff. They had a few more tweaks they needed to make to be certain everything was perfect. Soon, she would be able to hand it over to Vasquez and just focus on her science. It would feel good to accomplish something in science.

Kara laid on the couch in Lena’s office, her head resting in Lena’s lap. Lunch was done, but Kara could hang out for a moment under the excuse she was chasing down a lead. Lena ran her fingers through Kara’s hair.

“Has Alex spoken to you in the last few days?” Kara asked. She missed Alex like never before and it had only been four days. It was something about having the knowledge that Alex was her bond-mate that tipped things over the edge. Alex was already damn near everything. It was hard to fathom she was even more, but here they were and she wanted Alex in all the right ways. Now, if only Alex would just open her eyes and see the truth, we could have something even more amazing.

Lena massaged her scalp a little. “Yes, a little, but not in the way you want her to. She’s acting as if nothing happened.”

Kara scowled. “Do you think I was out of line?” She thought once she revealed the truth to Alex, she would be as bright and happy as Kara… well, in her own Alex way. Alex would finally have what she searched for and felt always eluded her — love and connection. And, she would have that with not just one, but two people.

Lena shrugged. “You know Alex better than I do.”

“I don’t know why I thought she’d just go with it. She always expects the worst.” But, there was no “worst” for their bond and it came with the added bonus of Alex being able to be with Lena. It was so obvious those two had something as well and she could not believe Alex wanted to fight that off when she always had such a good time with Lena, and that was without their mating times.

“Maybe you hit her with too much too soon. I think she’ll accept being your bond-mate much sooner than she’d accept also being attracted to me.”

Kara nodded. Okay, maybe that was too much, but once the realization hit her, she wanted to move at full speed. Her heart ached at being denied what they could all have and cherish. “Would you date her? I mean, let’s say I didn’t exist and somehow you’d met Alex, would you date her?”

Lena chuckled. “You have it wrong. I would date her now with your encouragement. Without you, me and Alex are a struggle waiting to happen. She might have had different issues without you, but I would have still had mine. I don’t see her being able to get past any of those things.”

Kara did not totally understand that. “So, you’d date her now?” That was the important thing.

“I accept you’re bonded to her and I understand you want us to get along. You see potential in us and I agree with you. I like Alex and we have sexual chemistry. I think it could grow into more. Will she let it?”

Kara pursed her lips. “Would it be wrong of me to just pout and tell her how much I want her to date you? And I want her to be my bond-mate? And just keep pouting more and more as time passes?” Eventually, Alex would have to give in and then she would see the truth for herself.

Lena laughed, throwing her head back, and tapped her fingers against Kara’s forehead. “Yes. Stop trying to skip a million steps because you had an epiphany. You should date Alex first. She’s your bond-mate and you both have missed over a decade of being together properly. Enjoy each other. I can come in due time.”

Kara sighed and reveled in Lena’s touch for a moment. “You are really smart.”

“With the price I pay for therapy, I better be.”

Kara smiled. “I’m really lucky to have you.”

“We’re lucky to have each other.” Lena leaned down, placing a gentle kiss to Kara’s lips.

Kara pushed up a little to deepen the kiss and Lena obliged. The angle was a bit awkward, but the caress of Lena’s tongue more than made up for it. She reached up to stroke Lena’s back and Lena moaned into her mouth at the simple touch. Lena’s pleasure was delicious and Kara wanted more.

Kara broke the kiss. “Hey, do we have time?” She wiggled her eyebrows. She would be late regardless, but Lena might have a meeting or something soon.

Lena giggled. “Yes. It’s been a while since we’ve done this in the office.”

Kara could not help looking around. “It has. So, let’s get to it.”

“You are so greedy.”

“No, you just taste so good.”

Lena chuckled as Kara hopped up and slid off of the sofa. She eased Lena’s heels off while Lena unbuttoned her pants. The scent of her arousal hit Kara immediately. The smell was so intoxicating and never failed to put Kara in a daze.

“You look drunk, my love,” Lena said with a teasing smile. Her eyes sparkled and she was the definition of beautiful.

“Pants off. Now.” Kara might have growled.

Lena snickered, wiggling the pants just past her hips, but she was not moving fast enough for Kara. Kara did the rest of the work, taking the pants down her smooth, creamy legs. She kissed each ankle before lying the pants over the coffee table, making sure they would not end up wrinkled. She nuzzled Lena’s thigh, earning a whimper.

“Please, Kara,” Lena whined.

“Well, you did say please.” Kara dived in, licking Lena fully, even though her panties were still on. But, they were basically a slip of lace, barely there anyway. She got a good taste and Lena had to feel all of that.

Lena’s hands went right to Kara’s head as Lena cooed from the contact. Kara tasted her like the sweet treat she was. She would go down on Lena all day if possible. Lena moaned and arched against her tongue, trying to get closer.

“You feel so good, Kara,” Lena whispered, voice already rough with want.

Kara smiled against the light, lace fabric of the panties and then moved them to the side to get to the real treasure. Lena cried out as soon as Kara’s lips were on her skin. Kara hummed in appreciation, wasting no time drinking Lena in, lapping at her desire, and delighting in her essence.

“Oh, God, Kara,” Lena moaned, threading her fingers through Kara’s hair. The sound and touch was more than enough encouragement for Kara.

Kara tasted Lena like an ice cream cone, dragging her tongue up until she flicked Lena’s clit with her tongue. Lena trembled against her and let loose a cute coo. Kara repeated this, getting similar results. It only made her crave more and more of Lena. She was not alone in her yearning.

Lena put her leg up on Kara’s shoulder and bucked. Kara smiled to herself. Her bond-mate was so eager for her and she wanted nothing more than to give Lena everything she wanted. Well, except for the fact that Kara wanted to taste Lena forever.

Kara put her hand on Lena’s abdomen, keeping her in place as she gathered Lena’s passion on her tongue. She ran her tongue through Lena several more times before setting her attention on Lena’s clit. She sucked the gem and Lena’s body bent, trying to curve, but she was stopped by Kara’s hand. She whined, but she loved it.

Kara kissed Lena with the intent on savoring her, but they did not have the time. Lena was already over her lunch break. Kara had mercy on Lena and slid a finger inside of her. Lena mewed and arched as much as she could as she throbbed around Kara’s finger, trying to draw her in even more. Kara moaned into Lena’s flesh, feeling every wonderful ripple. She pumped her finger in time with the movement of her tongue and lips. She resisted the urge to shove her free hand up her skirt, everything about Lena inflaming her, making her wet and hungry. No, this was about Lena.

Kara eased another finger into Lena and crooked both against her warm front wall and she suckled Lena’s pearl and Lena exploded with a wail. Kara released her, allowing Lena to pitch forward. Lena cradled Kara’s head to her as she panted. Kara spent her time licking Lena clean. Kara pulled away as Lena calmed. Her face was flush, but a pleased, sate smile adorned her face.

“That was wonderful, darling,” Lena said, running her fingers through Kara’s hair once more.

Kara smiled. “More tonight, but I’m also going to either invite Alex over or hang out with her. If the latter, I’ll try to be in by nine.”

Lena scoffed. “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

“I love you.” Kara smiled and kissed Lena before leaving out of the window. She would text Alex later. For now, she had to make herself presentable for work again.

-8-8-8-8-

Alex let Kara come over, even though she was trying to give both Kara and Lena space. It was better for Kara to come to her place than for her to go to the penthouse. It would help get the crazy idea out of Kara’s head that Alex and Lena should date. Of course, she could not just not be around Kara, though. Four days had been far too long. She needed cuddles as much as the next person. She was only human for crying out loud.

“So, pizza and Chinese?” Kara asked as she made herself comfortable on Alex’s bed. They were both in their pajamas, ready for a night of catching up on their shows. Usually, they would do this at the penthouse with a proper television, but Alex was avoiding it, so her laptop would have to do.

“You’re going to order both anyway,” Alex replied, pulling up the sleeves of her white baseball shirt.

Kara chuckled. “I am. I haven’t had pizza in days. Want anything on it?”

“Just plain.” Alex turned to grab another pillow to put behind her back. “I need to watch what I eat. I’m not nearly as active as I used to be.”

Kara snorted. “You fight crime, aliens, and metas most nights. You’re fine, but I would love for us to start sparring again. Lena and Brainy would love an excuse to upgrade the gym at home or even the one at L-Corp. Have you used that one?”

“I have not.” Until this moment, she did not know L-Corp had a gym. I thought I knew every inch of that place.

“Oh, well, we’re going to go check it out next time I’m at L-Corp. It’ll be fun. Lena says it’s really nice.”

Kara draped her arms around Alex and pulled her in close. The body contact was nothing new, but it held a new meaning after Kara’s revelation of them being bond-mates. As Kara snuggled into her, Alex wanted nothing more than to fully embrace Kara and revel in the feel of them, but Kara was not hers. We’re not bond-mates.

“Alex, it’s okay,” Kara whispered, as if she said it too loudly, she would shatter them.

With a sniffle, Alex shook her head and pulled away. “It’s not. I’m not going to ruin your relationship. You’re not mine.”

Kara pursed her lips and turned to face Alex. Kara folded her legs under her and rested her hands on her knees, like that would keep her from touching Alex. “I’m as much yours as I am Lena’s and you’re as much mine as Lena is. You know this in your heart and soul to be true. We are bonded.”

Alex shook her head, even though something quivered deep within her, tried to crawl to the surface, and threatened to overtake her. She ignored it, buried it, and was saved from answering as her phone vibrated. She picked it up to see it was an email under her L-Corp company address. The subject: is this your work?

“What is it?” Kara asked.

“I don’t know.” Alex opened the app and the email. It was from Fatinah, the new scientist from earlier. Good evening, I’m not sure if this is all right or not, but I was curious and I don’t have any other means to contact you. Did you write this article? It says Dr. Danvers and I’m very familiar with your parents’ writing style, having read plenty of their work, especially back when I was in school. This reads less formally, but is very well written and informative. It’s an intriguing study.

“Well, what’s it say?”

Alex shook her head. “It’s just an email from a colleague. She liked an old article of mine.” It was rare for her to get accolades for her work, even before she worked at L-Corp. She usually only published when she really felt like the knowledge needed to be out there in the world. Same for the few patents she held. Most of her knowledge was still in her mind.

Kara frowned a little. “She did?”

“Yes? Is that a problem?”

Kara’s face remained tense and now she floated just a little above the bed. She rubbed her knees with her hands. “Of course not. It’s just since you’ve gone to L-Corp, I’ve been reminded how offices can be like high school. I know how the scientists there treat you. I don’t want them to be pulling a prank and hurt you.”

Alex gave her a small smile, hoping to set her at ease. “It’s not like that. She’s new, so she doesn’t know the lab politics just yet. I think she likes me.”

Kara’s frown deepened. This was about more than possibly pranking Alex. “Are you sure?”

“Yes, and don’t be jealous. You’ll get over this idea of us being bond-mates and accept it’s just our usual emotions toward each other, nothing deeper, and you were hyped up on sunlight. You only bond with one person. Kryptonians are monogamous.”

“You say that as if you don’t know there can be variations and outliers.” Kara scoffed and crossed her arms. “And you call yourself a scientist. Besides, we’ve seen in history and stories, sometimes Kryptonians do bond with multiple partners. It happens, deal with it.”

As much as Alex wanted to deny it, she could not. It was rare for Kryptonians to bond with more than one person, but it happened. She was not sure it happened with Kara, though. They always felt strong emotions for each other. It did not mean they were bonded, though. She could not even mark Kara. Yeah, Lena can’t mark Kara either, so what are you saying? Alex needed to get this back on track before her mind went down a dark path.

“Kara, I really think you’re just confusing your feelings on this one,” Alex said.

Kara looked at her as if she lost her mind. “Confusing them how? Do you think I’d be comfortable just letting anyone be with Lena? It’s just you for a reason. But, go ahead and be in denial. Eventually, you know I’m right and it’ll all catch up with you.”

Alex scowled at how smug and certain Kara sounded. She was not bonded with Kara like that. She had had two long term relationships, felt love for those women, and had been more than ready to bond with them. But, those relationships weren’t successful. It always felt like something was missing. At first, she thought it was a desire for children, for a nuclear family, but with Kelly it was something more. Alex shook that off and decided to answer the email. She would see what this Fatinah was about.

-8-8-8-8-

Lena was in bed, jotting down notes for the suppressant formula she was definitely going to talk Alex into working on, when Kara came into their bedroom. She expected a happier Kara after spending time with Alex, especially since it was almost midnight, but Kara had a scowl on her face. Lena put down her notes on the nightstand.

“What’s wrong, my love?” Lena asked, opening her arms.

Kara wasted no time falling into her. Lena held her close and breathed her in, getting a whiff of Alex’s scent as well. She melted on the inside. Kara mixed with Alex was something she was all too happy to enjoy now. No, focus on what’s wrong with Kara.

“Tell me what’s wrong?” Lena asked with Kara’s head tucked under her chin.

“Alex is going to try to get a girlfriend,” Kara replied.

Lena expected a lot of answers, but that was not one of them. Maybe she heard wrong. “Excuse me?” Alex could not be trying to get a girlfriend four days after what had to count as emotional trauma with her rut and Kara’s epiphany.

“Some coworker emailed her while we were watching our show. Then, she told me again that I was confusing my emotions and that’s why I believe she’s my bond mate. She wouldn’t listen to reason. She’s being stubborn.”

Lena chuckled as she caressed Kara’s bare bicep. “Oh, you mean she’s being Alex. Did you really think this would be easy?”

Of course, Kara pouted. “Well, I figured she’d take to it the same way you did. You’re handling Alex as my mate pretty well.”

Lena shrugged. “Because I came after the fact. I understand how you both could have misinterpreted your relationship, especially seeing you two in action. You have serious romance blind spots. Anyway, I’m happy to be part of your life, as well as hers. For her, though, she sees you in a happy relationship and thinks you’re needlessly complicating it and trying to add an element in it that could lead to ruin.”

Kara actually whimpered, like this physically hurt her. “Do you think that?”

Lena gave her an extra-tight squeeze. “I could happily share you with Alex since I’ve been doing that already. She might not realize it, but I still truly believe she is your favorite entity and you go through withdrawals when you don’t see her after a few hours. You’re hopelessly in love, both of you. All you’re missing is a sexual component and I wouldn’t be upset if you added that considering my experiences with Alex.”

Kara’s brow wrinkled. “But, do you think we could all be together?”

“Yes, I do. I like Alex and since I have your permission I do believe with enough time and allowance it could grow into more. And, after the effort she’s put in for me, I would love to be able to take care of her.” They had gone through this several times since Kara’s epiphany last week, but Kara kept needing reassurances that she was not crazy because of how dismissive Alex was. Poor Kara could not fathom that her hero was afraid of something, especially something like happiness.

Kara hummed and cuddled in closer. Lena rubbed her shoulder and she purred. “I just want us all to be happy.”

Lena kissed the top of Kara’s head. “We’ll get there. It’ll take time. Just look at my relationship with Alex. Yes, we’ve grown leaps and bounds recently, but there were almost two years where we barely spoke unless the world was in danger. It’ll take time. Be patient.”

Kara only groaned. Patience was not really Kara’s thing. Time, people, and the time with them were precious. Kara knew best how everything could be gone in a flash. “It’s already been four days.”

Lena chuckled. “Yes, I think it might take a little more than that, my dear. You know Alex best of all and you know she does things in her own time. She needs to process.”

“I want her to process now. It all makes sense. She’s a scientist. She should see the evidence and come to the proper conclusion.”

“Sometimes, evidence needs to be tested. Hence, possibly getting a girlfriend.”

A deep groan escaped Kara. “I just want us all to be together and happy and together.”

“I know, sweetheart.” She kissed the top of Kara’s head.

Barely a minute later, Kara fell asleep curled up against Lena. Being upset must have exhausted Kara. Lena was tempted to text Alex and scold her, but instead, she snapped a picture of her notes. She sent the picture with a text. We’re going to do the suppressant project or what?

It took Alex a few minutes to get back to her. She probably was deciding on if she should answer or not. Let me clear my study first. With two jobs, it’s hard to have time for a third thing.

Lena frowned a little, thinking Alex was subtly trying to downplay Kara’s epiphany again. But, Kara and Alex did not know the meaning of the word “subtle.” You already have three jobs. I know what you do at night. She laughed at her own joke.

Well, that would make it even harder to handle something else. The three dots appeared to show Alex was typing more, but it took her a while to put the text through. How’s Kara? I know she’s mad at me.

Alex seemed receptive, the most she had in days since her rut, so Lena made a bold move. She FaceTimed Alex, who actually picked up. Lena’s heart jumped. I guess absence does make the heart grow fonder.

“To answer your question of how’s Kara.” Lena angled the phone so Alex could see Kara resting against her.

“Oh, wow. I didn’t think she was that upset. I’m sorry. It looks like you had plans.”

Lena glanced down at herself in a shimmering green negligee with an almost embarrassing neckline. She fought off the temptation to show it off to Alex. Memories of Alex’s knot mixed with the anticipation of being with Kara made Lena press her thighs together. She did not cover up, though. Alex had seen her in less.

“She’s not upset with you. She’s upset with the situation,” Lena said.

Alex glanced away. “She’ll get over it.”

“Or so you hope.”

“She will. You have to remember she was hyper from sun exposure. Once she’s back to normal, she’ll realize she was just being crazy,” Alex said.

“She came down from that days ago. You shouldn’t belittle or invalidate her emotions, Alex. We’re all allowed to feel what we feel.” You as well, even if you don’t want to acknowledge it.

Alex sighed, running her hand through hair. “I don’t want her to feel let down and I don’t want her to make you feel like you’re not enough.”

Lena laughed, throwing her head back. Alex had so many excuses. “Not enough? I managed to be so amazing I got an already-bonded Kryptonian to bond with me. I’m great.” This was really good for her ego and she meant that.

The frown that cut across Alex’s face was not surprising and would have been scarier if only she did not know what Alex’s face looked like when she climaxed or how Alex was when she was in rut. “We’re not bonded like that.”

“Alex, you’re a scientist. Examine the evidence before coming to the conclusion. Not to mention, you’re a strategist. You plan things out, see all the angles, and go with the best plan for the moment. I feel like you let your emotions do the thinking here.”

“There’s nothing to examine or think about. It’s not happening.” Alex looked away, face flushed. “I should go to bed. Good night.”

“Good night.” Lena barely got the words out before Alex hung up. Lena sighed. This was going to be a major uphill climb. She stroked Kara’s head.

-8-8-8-8-

Alex sighed as she threw her phone down on the bed. Kara would get over this eventually and they could all go back to normal. Like the normal where you banged her bond mate several times and tried to mark her like an idiot? Where you tried to pretend Lena was yours? That was the wrong thought to have as memories of being inside Lena flashed through her mind. She groaned and thought about Lena tonight, her breasts practically hanging out of her nightie. The sight of Kara pressed against Lena went through her mind. She tried to shake it away.

“Fuck.” Her dick was hard and pressing against her boxers. She pulled down her underwear and grabbed a tube of lube from her nightstand. “This is so wrong.” But, it did not stop her from using the lube and stroking herself to thoughts of Lena. And yet, when she climaxed, it was Kara’s name she whispered in the dark. Tears immediately burned her eyes. It could not be true. She was too awful for it to be true. She did not deserve Kara, or Lena for that matter. She would only bring them ruin.

Next time: After accidentally inviting Lena on an outing, Alex makes a date with Fatinah to try to move on.

Chapter Text

2: In Favor

Kara was determined to show Alex they were bond mates, so she was up bright and early for Alex’s morning run. Alex just looked at her for a moment when she opened her apartment door, but then they were both off. Of course, running did nothing for Kara, but she could help push Alex with a faster pace, which Alex appreciated, and sometimes Alex would just talk to her. Now did not seem like one of those times. Why is she doing this? Why can’t she just accept what we are? Can’t she feel my soul calling out to her? Kara would have to say something.

“You know you could exercise at the gym in L-Corp,” Kara said, just to start a conversation. It was a clear day and the sun fell on her face, giving her confidence to deal with this. Come on, Alex. You’re smart. You know this is what we’re meant to be.

“There’s a gym? Like a real gym?” Alex asked, glancing over at Kara.

Kara’s eyes went wide and she fiddled with her glasses. No way Alex doesn’t know about the gym! “Really? How long have you worked there?” She arched an eyebrow.

Alex sucked her teeth and shoved Kara. Kara laughed, but she was pleased with Alex touching her. Too much time had passed without Alex’s touch, even if it was casual like now. Her heart thumped and burned, remembering and desiring Alex to touch her more intimately. How can I be patient and take my time when she’s right here? I just don’t want to lose any more time with her.

“I’ve had other things to worry about,” Alex replied with a frown and she picked up speed a little, as if needing to run out her fury. “But, that explains why I always get complaints about there being a better place to show security takedown methods.” She pursed her lips. “I should scope it out. I could stop holding back, not wanting to hurt anybody on the hard floor.”

Kara yelped. “No! I didn’t tell you that so you could make life harder on the security.”

Alex treated L-Corp security like they needed to be on level with her former DEO agents. Yes, Kara liked competent security around Lena, but they did not need to be tormented to new heights. She existed and Alex was there. It would be bad luck for any person to get near Lena with evil intent at this point.

Alex looked at her like she was insane. “Look, I’m there to keep Lena safe, not coddle those idiots. I’m going to schedule that as soon as possible.”

“I wanted us to spar,” Kara said. That would be a way for them to interact and Alex could feel safe because there would be people around. Just something to get Alex comfortable with being around her again. I just want my Alex back! Well, she wanted Alex back and accepting what they were.

There was that look again, like she was crazy. “Well, we can’t do that at my job, especially not at the gym there.”

“So, you’ll come to the penthouse and we can do it there?” That would be so much better! They could hang out, mess around, have dinner, and cuddle on the couch! “It’ll be an even match with the red sun lamps.” So much more fun.

Alex laughed. “I love that you think we’re an even match without your powers. So cute.” The way her eyes sparkled was nice to see, but her teasing was not warranted.

Kara pouted and sped off, as if that somehow disproved Alex’s point. She returned to Alex’s side with bagels from New York City. “For later.”

“From that spot in Brooklyn?”

“Yup.”

Alex laughed. “You can’t buy me with delicious, handmade bread.” She grinned. “But, I still want the bagels.”

“Then we have to spar. Either at the L-Corp gym or the penthouse. If not, these are all mine.” Kara pressed the bag to her chest. They both knew she would have no guilt or shame in keeping and eating these bagels.

Alex groaned. “Fine. But, I’ll have to get back to you on when. Me and Vas are going shooting sometime this week.”

“Why?” While it was not bizarre, she needed to check that Alex was not trying to avoid her again. She would never go four days without Alex again if she could help it.

“Lucy beat Vas at the range and now her pride is wounded.”

Kara snickered. “Just regular pride, right? Alpha pride would need more than one trip.” She really did not know about alpha pride and stuff, but she heard Alex talking about it on more than one occasion.

“You know Vas isn’t that kind of alpha.” She really was not. Vasquez was the coolest alpha ever because she never gave into macho crap or alpha stuff. “But, Lucy is obnoxious on a good day, even to Vas. Can’t let her keep the upper hand.”

Kara rolled her eyes. “You just have a thing with Lucy because she arrested you that one time. Lucy’s really sweet.”

Alex scoffed. “To you maybe.”

“Now, I know you probably don’t want to right now, but you could invite Lena.” Kara grinned.

“No. I can’t. This is my time with Vas and she asked for my help. I’m not going to split my attention.”

“Okay. Understood.” Kara had not expected Alex to accept, but the request was a bit of a heat check. Alex was not upset Kara asked, nor was she angry at the mention of Lena’s name. Okay, so Alex avoided us, but she seems like she’s over it or at least open to being around us again. “You’re going to have lunch with Lena?”

Alex arched an eyebrow. “Why? Planning to kidnap me?”

Kara laughed. “Maybe. I could whisk you away—”

“If you start singing A Whole New World, I’m leaving.”

“You always spoil my fun!” Kara puffed out her cheeks, took a breath, and could not help herself. “I can show you the world—”

Alex took off at top speed. Kara laughed, still singing, and caught up without being obvious about her powers. But, Alex had another gear and just pulled away again. For a human, Alex was sometimes scary in her capabilities. Kara still gave chase.

-8-8-8-8-

Alex sat with Vasquez in her lab, as today was technically a day for science, but since Kara told her about L-Corp’s gym, she got excited. They could do so much with a proper gym space. She wanted to demonstrate moves and practice techniques with the security teams as soon as possible. Vasquez was more than happy to help with logistics. Organizing would always be Vasquez’s first love.

“So, what if instead of showing moves, you actually put them all through the paces?” Vasquez suggested.

Alex pointed. “That is a brilliant idea. I would love to get a better sense of how they all work one-on-one. They need to be able to hold things down in a lot of different areas if they’re going to be trusted with the safety of the building or the safety of Lena.”

Vasquez nodded. “This is true. These guys like to talk a lot of crap. You can make them put up or shut up like you used to do new agents. It was a good way to tell who would make it at the DEO and who wouldn’t.”

Alex rubbed her chin. “You’re right about that. Have you been to the gym? Is the space good for that?”

“Oh, yeah. It’s a very nice gym. It’s on par with the DEO gym with better lighting.”

Alex did not expect that, but also Lena did not do things by half. But, this was a good idea. They would have to work out how this would go. Vasquez had ideas, so they were able to figure it out pretty quickly. Alex now looked forward to it. She had not sparred one-on-one since the DEO went down. It had also been a long time since she fought someone and her life or a life was not on the line. Vasquez quickly jotted everything down in her tablet.

“All right, so the range tomorrow?” Vasquez asked as she packed away her planner.

Before Alex could respond, the door opened and Lena stepped inside holding a bag. She had her phone to ear, so she was not paying them any mind. Alex did not realize it had gotten so late. She and Vasquez must have talked more than she thought. But, this was good. Now, there was a buffer between her and Lena. I just need to keep Vas here, so I’ll try to prolong this range thing.

“Okay, Alex, so I ordered from that new sandwich place—oh.” Lena looked up, looking right at Vasquez. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you were here, Vasquez. Is it your day with Alex?” She checked her phone, probably to see the date.

“No, but—” Vasquez stopped as Lena held up one finger and the phone went back to Lena’s ear.

“Sorry. One second.” Lena’s attention went back to her phone.

Alex took the lunch bag from Lena and set it down on the lab table, which was clear of her usual clutter. The tiny space seemed crowded with three people, especially when Lena sat down.

“You can tell her we’re leaving early tomorrow,” Vasquez said to Alex.

Alex was about to nod, but froze. She did not want to have that conversation with Lena in front of someone, even if it was Vasquez. She did not want it to seem like Lena was giving her special treatment. She did not want to give anyone any reason to suspect she had banged Lena several times. Well, she also did not want to explain to Lena why she had not invited her to the shooting range, even though she had a good reason for it. But, Lena would take this personally, like Kara would if it was her.

Lena looked between them, but still listened to whatever was happening over the phone. Vasquez pointed to Alex, who groaned. Great, now she would have to explain why she did not invite Lena, even though they enjoyed shooting together. This is going to be a mess. I should’ve just done some science. Vasquez tilted her hand toward Lena and Alex waved her off.

“Look, just get it done,” Lena said into the phone and then ended the call. She put the phone down and turned her attention to them. “What are we leaving early for?”

“Vas and I are going to the gun range to get some practice in,” Alex replied.

Lena visibly perked up and her eyes brightened. Alex withered on the inside. She did not want to bring Lena’s mood down, especially since she seemed like she was already having a rough time and she had shown up with lunch. She did not need to keep bringing Alex lunch considering Alex had been childishly avoiding her and Kara.

“Oh, to the place by the beach?” Lena asked with interest as she took charge of the lunch bag she brought.

Vasquez looked at Alex, who grimaced. “No. That place has a private membership.” Neither she nor Vasquez were elite enough for that. She had gone there several times with Lena, though, and that place was amazing. It was like a country club of gun ranges. It would be nice to take Vasquez to that place, but nope. This was about her and Vasquez putting in work, not spoiling themselves with Lena’s connections.

“Alex, I told you to apply each time we went. I’m going to have them fast track your application,” Lena said.

“Wait, you shoot?” Vasquez asked Lena, pointing to Lena.

Lena nodded. “A lot better since Alex gave me some pointers.” Lena winked at Alex and she wished she could just disappear.

Vasquez punched her fist into her palm. “You should come with us!” She glanced between Lena and Alex. “Alex is helping me after I failed to impress my former army girlfriend with my shooting ability.”

Lena giggled. “That sounds like a euphemism.”

Vasquez chuckled. “I almost wish it was. Lucy probably would’ve been more forgiving.”

Lena glanced at Alex, who did her best to not look uncomfortable. She must have failed because then Lena turned her attention to the table top. “Thank you for the invite, but I don’t want to be a third wheel.”

“You wouldn’t be.” Vasquez drummed her fingers against the counter. “Come. It’ll be fun. Right, Alex?” Vasquez turned to her, completely oblivious to what she was doing.

Alex forced out a smile, certain she looked demented. “Sure, it’ll be fun.” If she did not make it awkward. Oh, when do you not make social situations awkward? When did you get like this? Definitely once she stopped doing drugs in college. I might need drugs to get me through the range if this happens.

Vasquez nodded. “Maybe I’ll do better if there’s someone else there. I don’t want to look like a novice.”

“Yeah, just don’t challenge Lena. You don’t want to risk losing again,” Alex said. Vasquez tended to keep her alpha-ness under control, but it would probably at least ding her alpha pride if she was beaten by someone else at something she was pretty talented at.

Vasquez turned to Lena. “Damn, that good? Now, this I have to see. You can tell me all about how Alex helped you, so I can make sure she’s doing it right when she helps me.” She snickered and glanced at Alex.

Lena laughed as well. “I’m sure she’ll do right by you. Alex is honorable if nothing else.”

“I know, but I would still love to see you shoot. And, while I know Alex is a great instructor in anything she tries, I would still like to know how she helped you,” Vasquez said.

Lena nodded. “What time? I’ll have to rework my schedule.”

“We’re going to leave at one if that’s all right. We can meet you in the lobby,” Vasquez replied.

“Sounds good,” Lena agreed.

“Dress comfortably, Lena. Actually, dress normal, too. This isn’t your private gun club,” Alex said.

Lena chuckled. “Aye, aye.” She gave a mock-salute, showing she spent way too much time with Kara around Alex.

“Well, with that settled, I leave you to your lunch,” Vasquez said as she gathered her things again and made her way to the door.

“Do you need help with anything?” Alex asked.

Vasquez shook that off. “I got it. Focus on your lunch.” She turned to Lena. “It’s good you got her into eating lunch. Supergirl couldn’t even pull that off.”

Alex glared at Vasquez, who chuckled as she left. Did Vasquez know something? How could she? Alex never said anything. Maybe I gave it away. But, how? She had no idea and did not have time to consider answers.

“Are you okay with this?” Lena asked as soon as they were alone.

Alex swallowed down her feelings, but it made her stomach roil. “It’s fine.”

Lena glanced away before finding the courage to stare Alex in the eye, making her braver than Alex. “I know you’re trying to avoid me.”

Alex flinched, even though it was true. It just sounded silly out loud. Silly and immature. Avoidance would not solve anything, especially since she had to work with Lena. And, honestly, she liked being around Lena, even if they were still trying to work out their friendship. “It won’t solve anything.”

Lena nodded, but pursed her lips. “What are you trying to solve, anyway? Kara’s emotions? My opinion?”

She had no logical response there. She could not stop Kara’s beliefs or Lena’s acceptance. Was she trying to avoid them so she did not develop feelings for them? Too late. She loved Kara and she was at least physically attracted to Lena. Avoiding would not change those things. In fact, avoiding only troubled her. She had missed both of them.

“Why are you both making me seem like the problem for not wanting to come between you two?” Alex asked.

“Because you’re not coming between us. If anything, I interrupted you and Kara.”

This made no sense to Alex. She and Kara had settled into their sister routine by the time Lena came along. She had not interrupted any romance between them. “What makes you say that?”

“Kara would’ve eventually figured out you were her bond mate.”

Alex scoffed. “Not likely. You’ve met us.” She did not think they were bond mates, but even if they were, she could not see them figuring it out after making the decision they were not an item a decade ago.

Lena laughed. “I have. You two are utterly hopeless, but I don’t think you missing this for so long was your fault. Your relationship had been put in the wrong box from the start and even though you clearly suspected it wasn’t quite right, hence her helping you with ruts, you also had so many bumps put in your way it was if the universe was telling you not now. But, Alex, you have it now. Do you want to waste any more time? You don’t have to fall on your sword. You don’t have to be a martyr.”

Alex scowled. She was not being a martyr. She was doing the right thing. “You and Kara deserve to be happy.”

“And you don’t? You’re going to sacrifice your happiness? Martyr.”

“It’s not like that. I’d complicate matters. You both work and you enjoy each other and… I’d just complicate things.” Why did they not get that three people in a relationship was messy, especially when the initial couple was already happy and so involved with each other?

Lena scoffed. “We already ‘complicated’ matters once you seconded. Now, things just make sense. And, I would be happy if Kara had what she desired and deserved.”

Alex shook her head, trying to keep a headache at bay. It was not working. Why was Lena so okay with this? She should be outraged and disgusted. She should rage at Kara for trying to be with someone else, but instead, she was supportive. Because she understands how much you and Kara need each other. No, no, no. That was too much right now. She did not need to go down that road. She had made the right decision and that was that.

“Let’s have lunch and show me your notes on these suppressants. I think I have a couple of ideas,” Alex said.

Lena laughed, but she jumped onto the very clumsy distraction. She unpacked their lunch and then took out her notes. They got to work.

-8-8-8-8-

Lena sighed, leaning her head back on the leather couch in the penthouse, as she finally finished rearranging her schedule for her afternoon off tomorrow. It was a lot, but she looked forward to this shooting trip, even if Alex probably was not as enthused. I can just remind her how much we get along, even when science isn’t distracting us. Then, she can consider how she can be with Kara and still be friends with me. Of course, with the way her body tingled at the thought of Alex, friends was only one step for her.

Kara flopped down next to Lena on the couch and gathered her in her arms. Lena giggled as she was pressed to Kara’s strong chest, rubbing her cheek against Kara’s worn My Little Pony t-shirt. Kara was so warm and Lena had to consciously stop herself from melting against Kara. She inhaled and Kara somehow smelled like sunshine. It was the only way Lena could describe it. It only made her want to melt into Kara even more. She groaned. Get this last thing done and you can do whatever after.

“Kara, stop. I need to send this last email!” Lena gave a weak effort to push away.

“No! No more work stuff. Cuddles!” Kara buried her face in Lena’s hair.

Lena wrapped her arms around Kara. “I want to cuddle, too, but I need to send this one last email so I can hang out with Alex without worrying about work.”

Kara pulled away enough to look her in the eye. “Hang out with Alex? That must have been a hell of a lunch.”

Lena laughed, throwing her head back, even though she definitely should not laugh over that. “No, I might have actually done something bad. I sort of invited myself to her shooting outing with Vasquez.”

Kara’s brow wrinkled. “What? How?”

Lena rubbed her forehead. “I’m not even sure now. Vasquez invited me and Alex didn’t seem to want to say no after that.”

“Vasquez invited you? Are you sure you didn’t trick her?” Kara grinned to show she was teasing.

Lena playfully shoved Kara. “No, I didn’t trick her. But, I’m going. I don’t think Alex was happy since she’s trying to avoid me.”

Kara scoffed, waving that off. “But, she’s being silly.”

“I called her on it with the hope it’ll eventually help her realize she is being silly, but I still don’t want to make her uncomfortable.” Lena was Alex’s friend and she wanted them to be close, so making Alex uncomfortable would not help, but she needed Alex to get used to her presence again. So, they had to spend time together.

Kara smiled, like Lena was being silly. “She’s going to have a good time with you. She always does. I don’t know why she’s fighting it and I don’t know why you’re worried about it. You know she’s going to have a good time with you and you’ll have fun with her. We could all just do that together.”

Lena sighed. If only Kara could just stop moving at full speed now that she figured out this life changing information. “She wants you to be happy and she thinks she’ll mess that up. I think we just have to be there for her and she’ll come around when she sees she hasn’t broken us up.”

Kara nodded. “I can do that. Well, I think I can do that.” She took a deep breath, as if to fortify herself for the wait. “Wait, does that mean we’re not going to have lunch tomorrow?”

“No, but if you’re good, I’ll bring Alex by for dinner.” Lena smiled. All she had to do was tell Alex that Kara really wanted to see her and that would be enough to get her to the penthouse, even if she was still trying to avoid them. She would just have to continue failing.

Kara moped, shoulders dropping. “Okay, but you have to bring Alex or I’m just going to pout the entire night.”

Lena chuckled and kissed Kara’s cheek. “If somehow I fail at this mission, I’ll bring treats and pamper you for the night.”

“Nope.” Kara shook her head. “You already said Alex for dinner. So, it’s Alex for dinner or nothing.”

Lena laughed and hugged Kara, kissing her forehead. She could send the last email later. “Then I will bring Alex tomorrow come Hell or high water. For now, how about we enjoy our alone time? I’ll heat up some of yesterday’s takeout for you and we watch a movie?”

Kara squealed. “Yes!”

Lena felt light inside over Kara’s genuine excitement. Kara really just wanted to be pampered and she deserved it. Alex started it, coddling Kara whenever she was scared when she first came to Earth and then well beyond. Honestly how those two did not realize they were bond mates was nothing short of incredible and spoke to how oblivious those two could be.

They only had about an hour to themselves before Kara had to rush off for Supergirl related business. Maybe Alex would be there and they could have some fun together, reminding Alex how well they worked together in all aspects of life. Kara left Lena with a quick kiss.

Now, Lena was alone. She sent that last email and now had time to plot her outfit for tomorrow. She had been shooting at the range Alex usually went to, so she knew how to dress. Casual to the point as if she was going to a park. I probably shouldn’t dress in a way to try to entice Alex anyway. That would make her uncomfortable

I’m just as eager as Kara to get Alex on board with this. Something about the idea of the three of them not only intrigued her, but just seemed right. But, she had to take her time, as she told Kara. They had to wait for Alex. So calm the hell down.

She grabbed her notes to distract herself. It was not the best idea, as it would just make her think of Alex, but damn it, Alex added some good stuff to her ideas. This is going to be so amazing when we really get to work on it. She could hardly wait. And, this held Lena’s attention for a few hours.

Kara was not back by the time Lena crawled into bed, but she did not fall asleep until Kara was curled around her in the early morning hours. Kara wrapped strong arms around her and kissed her softly behind the ear.

“Everything all right?” Lena asked, voice groggy.

“Yeah, just evolved into Supergirl and Sentinel having to bust up a drug ring made from alien hormones. Nothing the two of us couldn’t handle.”

“Saved the day with your favorite person. You didn’t make it weird, did you?”

“No, we were both all business. Alex might be a little keyed up tomorrow, though. She took all their data. More stuff to study and see if they were involved in other things.”

“Well, Alex is taking me shooting tomorrow, no matter what. I already changed my schedule for it, so it’s happening.” While it was a joke, she was serious, too. Alex would have to get her science on some other day.

Kara snickered and kissed her again. They both drifted to sleep and woke up to a pretty normal morning. Lena almost forgot to grab her change of clothes and had to turn around, but that was the most eventful thing about the morning.

Lena made sure to get everything done at the appointed time and then went to fetch Alex, as there was no way she was on time with even more research at her fingertips. As expected, Alex was hunched over her desk, scribbling in a notebook. It was partially adorable, except for the fact that Alex was probably running on coffee, adrenaline, and curiosity. She would burn out soon. Good thing she’s coming home with me.

“All right, Alex, time to go. Vasquez is undoubtedly waiting for us,” Lena said.

Alex did not jump, as if she was aware Lena had been there, even though her world seemed limited to the items in front of her. “One second—”

“No ‘one second.’ You’ll stretch that into an hour. We need to go. You always stress about being places on time,” Lena said.

Alex let out what could only be considered a whine, but Lena was not there for it. Even though, it was nice Alex was comfortable enough with her to whine. She marched over to Alex and closed her notebook. Alex gasped and looked at her with hard eyes. Lena was not moved, nor intimidated.

“Grab your things. You promised to help Vasquez,” Lena said in a stern voice.

Alex sighed, shoulders falling, along with her face for a moment. “You’re right. Let me get my stuff.” She stood up. She had a duffle bag in the corner. Lena looked around and realized Alex did not even have a locker for her things. I have to do something about this. Alex was still the L-Corp pariah, despite her friendship with Lena.

Alex shouldered her bag and Lena paused to take in the image she cut. There was something about the way she stood with the bag on her shoulder. Lena took a breath and shook herself out of the stupor as Alex moved. They made their way to the door. They opened the door and Lena yelped. A woman stood before them.

“Miss Luthor,” the woman said. Lena did not get a chance to respond or inquire who this woman was. What she did take in was the woman was gorgeous, full figured, with perfect hair and little makeup.

“Fatinah,” Alex said. Her voice sounded surprised, but there was like a happy lilt to it.

Lena almost frowned, but caught herself. Calm down. We’re going shooting. She would not let Alex dally for too long, even if she had to be rude about it. Is that why you want to be rude? She ignored that thought.

The woman, Fatinah, turned to Alex and her dark eyes sparkled as she stared at Alex. “Doctor Danvers.” There was an almost chirp in her voice. Lena’s nerves twitched.

“You can call me Alex. What are you doing in my little hole-in-the-wall?” Alex asked.

“Oh.” Fatinah perked up, cheeks flushed. “I was coming to see if you wanted to go get lunch, but you seem to be on your way out.” Fatinah glanced at Lena, who consciously had to keep her body from tensing.

Alex blinked. “Oh, yeah? Maybe tomorrow. I’ll let you know.”

Fatinah smiled, teeth straight and white. “Okay. Good. Don’t forget me.”

Alex smiled back. “I won’t.”

Lena held back rolling her eyes. She also held back from grabbing Alex to show this little omega that Alex was taken. Alex isn’t mine to claim, even if she’s Kara’s bond mate. She has to accept that before we can move forward. The thoughts did not help Lena settle, though.

Alex put her arm around Lena to move her and Lena fought down the urge to smirk at Fatinah. Again, Alex is not your alpha, so calm the hell down. But, what a thing it would be if she was.

As expected, Vasquez was waiting for them in the main lobby, also holding a duffle bag like Alex. They piled into Vasquez’s rather small car after Alex took Lena’s bag and put it in the trunk for her. The drive was short and pleasant. Alex had a ton of questions for Vasquez, trying to understand how she lost to Lucy. Lena sat in the back, quietly, not wanting to interrupt their discussion.

The conversation went on for the entire ride and beyond. They talked as Vasquez parked the car. Alex grabbed both her bag and Lena’s. Lena walked behind them, eyes drifting from Alex’s back to her ass. There was something about watching Alex carry the bags that spoke to her strength and kept Lena’s attention as they entered the place.

They changed out of their work clothes and grabbed their guns, as well as a few the operator was willing to let them try. Alex stood back and observed at first. Then, she helped Vasquez first and Lena felt her hackles up again. Calm down. You pushed into their thing. Alex is here for Vasquez, who invited you here and is being nice to you. They’re friends. Vasquez is an alpha in a relationship. And for the last time, Alex isn’t yours.

And then Lena calmed when Alex came to her side, touching her hips to correct her stance. Alex paused and stared at Lena with wide eyes. Damn it. She had released pheromones by accident.

“You okay?” Alex asked in a low tone.

Lena nodded. “Fine. Might just be some leftover effects from helping with your rut.” Or so I hope. What the hell is wrong with me?

Alex accepted that excuse, but Lena was in trouble. This went back to her heat, craving Alex’s knot and her teeth. On a base level, she wanted Alex, which she could accept. But, since they started getting along, it had grown, and Kara and her damn double-bond mates. Lena was screwed, especially since she was very aware Alex was going to make a date with Fatinah. This was not fair.

Chapter Text

3: Support

Lena was in Kara’s lap on their sofa in the penthouse, kissing her as if it was the only thing she could do. Kara caressed her sides, all too happy for the make out session. Lena did not even want to think about the stain she might be leaving on Kara’s dress considering the state of her underwear. Kara did not seem to care. Lena was on fire and hated that she had to break the kiss to breathe.

“You’re pretty keyed up.” Kara grinned.

“I’ve spent the day with your bond mate’s hands on me and watching her shoot a gun. I’m not sure how I didn’t end up sitting on her lap on the ride back,” Lena replied. She should be embarrassed, especially since she was so turned on. She had stunk of pheromones on the ride back to the point where Alex and Vasquez rolled their windows all the way down. But, she was much too turned on to be embarrassed. She could only feel a burning desire for Kara.

Kara chuckled, fingers stroking Lena, definitely not helping the fire in her veins. “You’re really attracted to her, huh?”

“It’s your fault. Had you just been here for my heat.” Lena pouted. She never would have guessed she would fall for Alex this way back then and she doubted Kara considered it either, but here they were now. She craved Alex in a carnal manner. She had only felt this with Kara, needing security and promises of no harm to really let herself go and lust after someone like this.

Kara smiled. “I’m happy I missed that heat. It’s led to so many realizations for both of us. We just need to wait Alex out, like you said.”

That seemed like such a big ask right now. “I agree, but I also need one thing from you.”

Kara grinned. “Oh, yeah? You wanna say it out loud?” She wiggled her eyebrows.

Lena frowned. “Maybe I just want you to do it.” Maybe we should talk about this, though. While she had expressed interest in Alex, she had not really told Kara about this overpowering lust. A desire so great that she wanted Kara to take her because Alex had touched her. “Does it bother you that I want your hands on me because I was with Alex?” She should feel guilty over this, but she did not. Of course, that would probably change if Kara was offended.

“Nope.” Kara’s voice was practically a chirp and her eyes sparkled. “Why would it? I’m happy you’re attracted to Alex, too. I think it’s easier for all three of us to be together and take care of each other than me having to split my time between two bond mates. I wouldn’t want either of you to ever feel neglected or like I loved one more than the other.”

“That could still happen.” The thought made Lena’s heart sink. How could she compete with Alex? Alex, who was Kara’s first love, her hero, and first bond mate.

Kara nodded, reaching up to caress Lena’s cheek. “I know, but I think there’s more support in the three of us bonding. Honestly, I think we all need each other.”

Lena scowled even deeper. “You’re enough for me.” Despite her yearning for Alex, she still believed this statement to be true. She would be happy with Kara for the rest of her life and she was not sure how she would go on without Kara if things ever came to that. Meanwhile, she could live without Alex, as she had. Well, you lived without Kara once as well, so you’re not making much sense. She needed to get out of her own head now.

Kara caressed the small of her back. “I know and you’re enough for me, but there’s nothing wrong with more.” She smiled a little.

“What happens if ‘more’ never materializes? Alex is probably going to date a scientist interested in her. What does that mean for us? For you, who loses out on a bond mate?”

“Alex is my bond mate and I think we’ve proven we will go on in some form always.”

“Will that be enough?”

Kara shrugged. “It’s been enough so far. I mean, yeah, I didn’t realize she was my bond mate, but the emotions were always there and no matter what happened we always find our way to each other.”

“But, the physical affection would be nice?” Lena snickered.

“Well, yes. You know it just strengthens the bond between us. Hey, it started a bond between you and Alex. Again, there’s nothing wrong with wanting a little more, especially if it’s there.”

“So, you don’t feel like you would be losing Alex if she never acknowledged being your bond mate?” From the way Kara acted, Lena did not think Kara could take Alex just never admitting to having this bond with her. It seemed like something that would eat away at Kara.

Kara’s brow furrowed as she thought on her response. “I wouldn’t be losing her, just not exploring an aspect of our relationship. You know this from being my bond mate. There was something there between us before we acknowledged it and I believe we will always go on in some form, even if something happens to our physical relationship. I never approach a relationship thinking about what could go wrong because Alex already taught me we can overcome those things and get set on a good path. And, you’ve only added to that. Look at where we are.” She motioned between them. “Hell, look at where you and Alex are. As long as we have a common goal, we can accomplish anything. And, right now, my goal is to give you as many orgasms as your body can handle and let you forget your troubles.”

Lena shivered. “Promises, promises.” Or so she hoped.

Kara giggled and lifted her with expected ease, carrying her to their bedroom. Lena had no choice but to kiss Kara the entire trip there until Kara eased her onto the bed. Kara kissed her back as soon as she was secure on the mattress. She hummed to the tune of Kara’s lips and tongue, feeling wanted in a way she would never be able to put into words. Making this even more amazing, Kara kissed her like this, knowing she was turned on from being around Alex. Insane.

Kara broke the kiss to step back and unzipped her dress while Lena removed her t-shirt. Kara was already unbuttoning Lena’s pants by the time she tossed her t-shirt to the floor. Lena was barely out of her clothes before Kara’s fingers were caressing her. Her body was already burning and now ready to explode from just a little attention.

“Fuck, yes, Kara,” Lena hissed, throwing her head back.

“You’re so wet,” Kara said, marveling over how turned on Lena was. She rubbed Lena’s clit in perfect circles.

“Yes!” Her body practically burst into flames from just the promise of feeling Kara.

“From wanting Alex?” Kara slipped a finger inside of Lena. Her voice was like sweet honey, eager to hear how much her bond mate desired her bond mate.

Lena groaned, bucking into Kara’s fingers. “Wanting you, feeling Alex, both of you.” God, she wanted both of them so badly. Why was Alex being so Alex about this!

“You got me and I got you.” Kara kissed Lena’s neck, lips lingering as if savoring her.

Lena moaned and tilted her head for Kara to have better access. Kara did not disappoint, sucking Lena’s neck as she pumped her finger in and out of Lena, setting every part of Lena ablaze. The only thing that would make this better would be Kara marking her. Then, the memory of Alex’s teeth grazing her neck less than a week ago flashed through her mind and ghosted across her skin. It was more than she could handle.

Lena gasped and wrapped her arms around Kara’s shoulders, holding on for dear life as her orgasm erupted through her as a powerful yet pleasant surprise. She fell against Kara, enjoying the solid, warm, and loving form of her beloved. This was heaven.

“You okay?” Kara whispered.

Lena sighed, but her body hummed and craved more. “Please tell me we’re just getting started.” She needed so much more.

“Of course.” Kara grinned. “You know I want to take care of you.”

Lena could not help kissing her. Lena kissed Kara like it was the last thing she would ever do, but also all the time in the world to do it. Kara kissed her back, trying to keep up with Lena’s pleasure.

Lena broke the kiss, pulling back to whisper a special request. “Wreck me, my love.” And Kara proceeded to honor that entreat.

-8-8-8-8-

Alex had been a bit nervous about meeting up with Vasquez after their strange outing with Lena yesterday. The shooting was a huge success, but Lena was pumping out pheromones almost like a damn omega in heat. Vasquez had been cool about it, but Alex could only imagine how uncomfortable she had to be trapped in the car with Lena. Alex had never crossed her legs and leaned forward so much in her life, not even when she was in high school, getting boners just after presenting. Vasquez pretended like everything was normal, even when they showed up for work today.

Alex stood in the L-Corp gym and her phone buzzed in her pocket. She went into her black, yoga pants and smiled as she checked her phone. Fatinah texted her, wanting to meet for coffee this morning. Alex had plans, but she was free for lunch and Fatinah agreed to that. It was shaping up to be a good day, but it was early morning and things could easily change.

“What are you smiling at?” Vasquez asked as she stepped next to Alex. “You’re that happy you’re about to embarrass a whole security detail in the company gym?”

Alex chuckled as she put her phone away. “They need to be humbled. Can’t have them thinking they’re all that when we know with the right planning and weapons we could mess them up. Beyond that, I have a lunch date.”

Vasquez nodded. “That cute scientist from the other day?”

“Yup.” This was just the way for her to stop lusting after Lena or thinking of Kara in any untoward manner. Time to move on.

“Good for you. Maybe having an omega around you will help you work off all this extra energy.” Vasquez smirked at her.

Alex scoffed. “Or she’ll beat me at shooting targets and I’ll be all bent out of shape about it, even though I find it sexy.” Of course, that was kind of cute… as cute as anything involving Lucy Lane could be cute anyway.

Vasquez laughed. “It is sexy. I don’t get alphas who don’t find strong omegas sexy.”

Alex shrugged. “You know I’m right there with you, but some alphas think dominating an omega is peak alpha behavior.”

“When, in fact, dominating other alphas is peak alpha behavior.” Vasquez gave another smirk.

Alex held up her hands in surrender. “I’m just keeping them humble. Just make sure you take good notes and everything. You never know what we might find out or what information we might be able to use.”

Vasquez arched an eyebrow. “Who are you talking to, sir?”

Alex laughed and then turned her attention to the gym. This gym was way more than Kara had led her to believe and it was even more amazing that she did not know it was there until it was mentioned. It was like any top notch gym the employees could join outside, but right here and convenient. Lena did a good job with this.

There were several treadmills, which were in use. Weights, which Alex would have to make use of one day soon as she had not lifted weights since the DEO went under. But, best of all, there was a boxing ring in a second room. It was a proper size and did not get much action according to Vasquez. Time to change that.

Alex moved to get in the ring and stretched, touching her bare feet, and bending her arms behind her back. She had energy she needed to work off now that she had a date and could move on with her life without messing up Kara and Lena. Yesterday had been so hard with Lena spraying pheromones all over the place. If Alex did not have the level of self control she did, she would have fucked Lena right there in the back seat with Vasquez present. She could only hope Lena had not done that on purpose. Just stop thinking about it, damn it.

Alex was taken from her thoughts as the first few members of security showed up, escorted by the head of security, Devin Star. Vasquez had compiled a list, based on skills and ability, and they were to proceed in that order. It should be fun.

First up was Pedro Guay. He was an expert in several forms of hand to hand combat and an Army Ranger. He was quick on his feet, could think outside the box, and went down pretty easily from underestimating Alex. She shook her head as she leaned down, offering her hand.

“You didn’t expect the challenge because I’m a woman, smaller than you, or just one person?” Alex asked. Fighting aliens, and living with Kara, taught her looks were deceiving as hell. She went into every situation, especially a battle, expecting the worst.

Pedro grabbed her hand and hopped to his feet. “Best two out of three?” He grinned, probably to soothe his own hurt feelings.

Alex shook her head. “I would love to, but I have a line to get through and assess. And I’m serious about the question. Woman, smaller, or single?”

He frowned. “All of the above.”

She glanced at Vasquez, who scribbled on her tablet. “Okay. We can work on that.” He was good, but he needed to take everything seriously.

“So, then a rematch?”

“No problem with that, just not today,” she replied and Pedro nodded.

Alex moved on to the next one. While the match was easy, it was fun, especially when the group started using what they saw from the last match to try to take her down. It was still very impossible. They gathered a crowd after a while. She was a little surprised Lena did not make her way down, as it seemed like even people outside of the gym were coming down now. Why? So you can show off for her? She’s not your omega, so stop being stupid.

It was better than her thinking about Kara, but now that was in her mind. She shivered at the thought of sparring with Kara. It was not the same as showing off for Lena. It was just the thought of being around Kara and having fun together. No, stop doing this. You have a date and you’re supposed to be focusing on this sparring match.

The last one to step up was the head of security, Devin Star. Alex smirked as Devin unbuttoned her shirt and shrugged out of it for dramatic flare. She had a black tank top on underneath, showing off shoulders and biceps that even Alex was a little envious of. But, Alex had dropped more muscular opponents with little problem.

Alex put her hands up and Devin did the same. It was on without a moment’s thought. There was a big crowd now and Alex was a little tired, but she would not go down with all of these people watching.

The match was more vigorous than any others, which was good. There needed to be a reason Devin got her job, after all. By the end, they both laughed and wiped sweat from their brows.

“I don’t care what you say, there’s no way in Hell you used to be FBI and nothing else,” Devin said.

Alex snickered. “You’re just saying that because you got your special forces ass kicked.”

“No, because then you can’t be human. A doctor and this level of fighting? You’re fucking Batwoman.”

Alex scoffed. “Not even close. It just takes the right mentors. Besides, if you ask around here, I’m not much of a doctor.”

Devin rolled her eyes. “I think we all know I know what it’s like to underestimate you, which is funny since I know what it’s like to be on that side.”

“At least you gave me a chance.” That was really all Alex ever needed, one person to believe in her and then she would soar.

Devin nodded. “Well, Miss Luthor gave me a chance. There had to be something more to you and, damn, you prove time and time again that there are layers and levels to your shit. The scientists will figure that out or avoid you because they now know you can kick their asses.”

Alex shook her head, but smiled. “I don’t think that’ll endear me to the scientific community around here.”

Devin shrugged. “Then, fuck ’em.”

That was Alex’s attitude. She was not at L-Corp to make friends. Hell, sometimes she was not even sure she was there to do science until recently. She was there to make sure Lena was safe and therefore Kara was happy. Yeah, so maybe stop imagining being with one or the other. She really needed to focus.

Vasquez slipped over. “Okay, so I have loads of data to analyze and that’s just based on initial observations. Lots of work to do.” She was almost chipper over it, eyes sparkling like she had just gotten early Christmas gifts.

Alex scoffed. “And that’s just one group.” They had several pods of security to go through. She could not possibly spar all of them in one day.

“True. Look, I’ll start making sense of this stuff and we’ll set the other teams up for the next couple of days and next week?” Vasquez suggested.

“Good. I’m going to go shower.” Alex was drenched in sweat.

“Or you could let a bunch of omegas rip you apart and die every alphas dream,” Devin laughed, nodding her head toward a group of whispering omegas, both male and female.

Alex blew out a breath, but did not respond. She was going to say omegas were not attracted to her like that, but she certainly had a lot of eyes on her. She was not a fan, so she hustled to the locker room to get clean. I hope no one follows me in. By the time she was done, she barely had time to dress and meet up with Fatinah.

Fatinah looked even better than usual, as if she had somehow planned this date, even though it seemed spontaneous. She had on a beautiful, white dress that hugged her curves. The light coming through the windows gave her a golden halo, making Fatinah’s bronze skin glow. She was amazing.

Damn, I wish I was dressed better. Alex was dressed how she usually dressed, black jeans, boots, and flannel shirt of all things. This would have been fine if she was more familiar with Fatinah, but she was not dressed to impress and she wanted things to go well with Fatinah. Just be cool, be likable, and do the right thing.

Fatinah smiled as Alex approached her by the main entrance of the L-Corp building. “I was afraid you wouldn’t make it.”

Alex stepped by her side. “Why is that?” Had she given off the impression that she was a flake? It might explain why you can’t keep an omega. While Maggie and Kelly accused her of lots of things, they did not mention her bailing without word as a problem.

“People are talking about you in the gym.”

“Oh.” Alex was not surprised by how fast things spread, but L-Corp really was just a den of gossip.

“You’re just full of surprises.” Fatinah giggled.

Alex shrugged. “I guess. You like Vietnamese food? There’s a really nice place just up the street.” She motioned to the door and started walking. Fatinah fell into step with her.

“I’ve never really had, but I’m willing to try anything once.”

“I think I have tried everything once.” A side effect of living with Kara, but Alex loved the variety. She had favorite dishes from all around the world and someone not only capable, but very willing, to bring her whatever she wanted. Oh, wow, does she spoil me? Alex always thought she was the one who spoiled Kara, but there were moments when Kara did things for her no one else would or could do. Stop thinking about Kara. Focus on Fatinah.

Alex looked over at Fatinah and smiled at her. Fatinah smiled back as the sun hit her face, and there was that halo again, even brighter than before. It should have done something for Alex, but it was just something she noticed and nothing more. Calm down, you only just met. Give it time.

They strolled the short distance to the restaurant and were seated against a wall to the back, which Alex preferred. She usually came here with Vasquez, so the host knew them and where they liked to sit.

“This place seems nice,” Fatinah said as she looked around. It was a quaint spot with only six tables, but the food was amazing and more meant to be carried out than anything. Alex and Vasquez liked the time away from L-Corp, though.

“I like it. I hope you do, too.” Alex pushed the menu over to Fatinah. It was on the table, made like a pyramid with one side with the entrees, another with drinks, desserts, and the last with different types of banh mi.

Fatinah nodded. “Well, you can order for me since I don’t really know the food like that.”

“Um… okay.” Alex was not used to that. Yeah, sometimes Kelly would ask her to order for her if she had too many choices, but she knew Kelly’s likes and dislikes. It showed a level of trust Alex had not earned with Fatinah. It did not sit well with her for some reason.

“So, they said you were in the gym today laying out security officers. I had no idea you were a fighter,” Fatinah said.

Alex shrugged. “I used to be an FBI agent.”

“People were saying that. Is that why you don’t have a lot of published work? Why didn’t Miss Luthor hire you for security instead of in the lab?”

The questions should not have bothered Alex, but they did. She did not have to be one or the other, she could be smart and strong. She liked working in the lab and made scientific strides, even if they never made it to journals, but she also liked being active and making sure innocent people were safe.

“I can do both,” Alex replied.

Fatinah stiffened and her dark brown eyes went wide for a moment. “Oh, of course. I just thought one might interfere with the other. You don’t have a lot of published work.”

“I know. But, I can still do both.”

Fatinah steered the conversation away from Alex to her mother’s latest work. Since Alex’s relationship improved with her mother, she was more up to date with her mother’s studies, but she did not go into much detail. She was not sure if Fatinah was a fan or trying to steal her mother’s ideas. She hated thinking like that, but she knew all too well how some people were. It made the conversation a little awkward, but they pressed on.

Added to that, Fatinah did not seem to like what Alex ordered for her. Fatinah picked at her spring rolls and picked at Alex’s banh bot chien. Alex did not like Fatinah taking things off of her plate. It was too familiar and Alex was quite hungry considering she spent the morning fighting. Yet, on their way back to L-Corp, Alex asked Fatinah out on a proper date — dinner and a movie that night — and Fatinah accepted. Alex was stunned.

Kara had expected a nice lunch with Lena, and maybe a little extra if Lena was in the mood, but she came into Lena watching sparring footage. Kara got dragged into it. She always admired Alex’s ability, but now she was able to appreciate Alex’s power and movement through a lens of attraction.

Alex wiped the floor with an entire security team. Kara floated behind Lena as they watched a few matches. Alex handled them all as expected, but it was still impressive. I need to get her to spar with me… for scientific purposes. Glancing at Lena, and seeing how entranced she was, Kara definitely needed to get Alex to fight her and let Lena watch.

“Why are you watching this?” Kara asked to get her thoughts away from the path it was on, but also wanting Lena to confirm she was turned on watching Alex work.

Lena did not even glance back at her. “Vasquez shared it with me for my input on my security teams. Watching Alex is more than a little distracting.”

Kara chuckled. “At least you’re not pheromone blasting this time, not that I would mind.” She loved the smell.

“It’s not fair that she’s so damn sexy.”

“Agreed.”

Lena shook her head. “I don’t know how I never noticed. How is it I had to sleep with her before I realized it?”

Kara scoffed. “Remember, I had slept with her and forgot how sexy she was.”

Now, Lena did glance at her. “Yes, that is much worse. I mean, I saw you in action and even when pissed at you, I would’ve readily admitted you were sexy when going around being Supergirl and kicking ass. But, we both saw Alex like this, doing things like this often, and it just went by us.”

Kara grinned. “I like being able to lust over Alex with you.” Is that weird? She doubted it, but even if it was, she did not care. It was time to embrace at least some “abnormal” part of her if it meant she could have Alex and Lena.

Lena shook her head. “We really need to stop.”

“Yes, because I’m upset with her.” Kara did not stop watching, though. “She won’t spar with me because she won’t come to the penthouse. It’s made us out of sync.” Doing something active, rather than passive like watching television, might help Alex understand how close they were, how they fit together, belonged together.

Lena scoffed at her. “Now, that I don’t believe.”

“Well, it could make us out of sync!” Kara threw her hands up. “Besides, she always complains I rely more on my super strength than skills, but then doesn’t want to teach me more skills.”

Lena laughed, eyes still glued on the computer. “Sounds like you need to take that up with her.”

“I will. I wasn’t going to stress it because she’s got these two jobs and she didn’t even know about the L-Corp gym, but the second I tell her about it, she’s sparring with these guys rather than sparring with me.” Kara motioned to the computer screen.

“Sparring seems like a stretch. She’s really embarrassing everyone. It’s amazing to think this woman has self-esteem issues.”

Kara nibbled the corner of her mouth. “Well, that’s my fault really.”

Lena turned and rubbed Kara’s knee. “No, don’t say that. Alex would never blame you. And, if anything, being around you helped push her past her limits. She wants to protect you and that’s what helped get her to this point. Alex loves you, so don’t beat yourself up over that.”

Kara smiled like an imp. “No, I should beat Alex up instead!” Alex would definitely respect her if she won a fight against Alex. It might help Alex understand her revelation of them being bond mates.

Lena chuckled. “Not what I meant, but you should remind her that you need to be able to protect yourself and it’s basically her duty to show you how to do that, like when she took me shooting.”

“You’re absolutely right. I’m going to go tell her right now.” Kara took a step and then paused.

“What’s wrong?”

Kara sighed, shoulders dropping. “She’s not in the building right now.” She listened out for Alex and groaned. “She’s at lunch with someone.”

Lena curled her lip. “Probably Fatinah Veda. I should read her employee file. Well, more so than I already did.”

“What? No. You keep telling me I have to let Alex come to me.” As much as Kara wanted Alex to embrace them, she did not want either of them to try to sabotage Alex trying to have a relationship. That would do more harm than good.

“Well, I don’t want her to get hurt while we wait. I’ve only recently learned how much employees around here resent Alex’s presence. I don’t want this to be a set up,” Lena said.

Kara frowned, folding her arms across her chest. “Like high school?” Once, kids in high school bet a football player, who had just presented as an alpha, to ask her out only for him to reveal it was bet when they got to the movies and a bunch of their classmates were there to laugh at her. It was humiliating, even when Alex came to save her and helped make her feel better. She never wanted Alex to experience something like that.

“You know as well as anybody how work can turn into high school. So many people here don’t think Alex deserves her job and my attitude toward her those first few months didn’t help. Even if Fatinah is a new employee and missed that drama, people could still be using her to create drama.”

Kara nodded. “You’re right, but maybe they saw Alex kick ass and decided to abort mission?”

Lena sucked her teeth. “Why are you being all rational now? Before you seemed ready to force Alex into being your bond mate.”

“Well, one of us has to be rational, and it’s pretty obvious you’re all foggy with lust.” Kara jabbed her thumb at the computer monitor.

Lena’s frown deepened and then her shoulders dropped. “I’m awful, aren’t I?”

“What? No!” Kara wrapped her in a hug. Kara ignored the subtle pheromones wafting from Lena. “You’re not awful. You like Alex. I like Alex.”

“You love Alex. There’s a difference.”

“I firmly believe you can grow to love Alex as I do and I believe she could grow to love you as I do, as long as you open your heart. Right now, yes, you lust for Alex, but beyond wanting her body. You crave Alex’s company as much as I do. And, as much as she might fight, she wants us too.”

Lena sighed. “Do you think I’d be like this if anyone else seconded for us?”

“I dunno. Have you ever wanted someone like this after they helped you through a heat and you helped them through a rut?”

Lena blew out a long breath. “Never.”

“Then, I guess it’s just Alex. We can wait, right? We’ve made it this long without being with her.”

“But, we didn’t know.”

“True.” That was really the thing. Not knowing had made it so much easier to deal with the force that was Alex. There was this hole there now, eating at her soul. She did not want that for Lena, especially considering what Lena had been going through the past few days. Yes, they had to wait for Alex, but it did not need to be maddening. “Hey, wanna take off the rest of the day? We can have lunch in Paris. As long as Supergirl does something heroic today, Miss Grant won’t even ask where I was.” Miss Grant coming back to CatCo was one of the best things to happen to Kara.

Lena laughed, but her brow wrinkled. “Are you serious?”

Kara smiled brightly. “Of course I am. I want to pamper you today. I don’t want either of us to think about Alex anymore. We’re letting her consume too much of our thoughts right now, especially since you’ve been right. She has to come to us.” It hurt to know Alex was running from her, going to the arms of another woman, but she knew Alex. Alex would only face the truth when it was the only option she could see.

With a nod, Lena smiled right back. “Let’s do it, but you can meet me there. I’ll take my jet, so it doesn’t look so obvious that Supergirl took me to Paris.”

Kara giggled. “Okay. It gives me some time to make plans and we can stay the weekend.” It would do them some good and give Alex some space to figure things out. Perfect.

Chapter Text

4: On Behalf

Alex dressed up for her date with Fatinah, deciding on a little black dress. It would discourage her from riding her motorcycle on the date. It seemed like she would be trying too hard if she rolled up on her bike. Fatinah already knew about her laying out an entire security team. She did not have to stamp her forehead with the word “alpha.” That always seemed like an asshole thing to her, unless it was requested by a significant other to amp up her alpha-ness.

She met Fatinah at the movie theater. Fatinah was gorgeous as always, dressed in a white dress showing off her shoulders and forearms. Her hair fell in waves down her back. She smelled wonderful, hints of jasmine perfume wafting from her. None of this hit Alex in a way that would make it different from her seeing Vasquez dressed up.

“Hey, waiting long?” Alex asked as she stood by Fatinah at the main entrance.

Fatinah jumped and gasped as she turned to Alex. “Where did you come from?” It came out almost like a demand. Alex was not sure what to make of that.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you,” Alex said.

Fatinah breathed a sigh of relief, hand to her chest. “It’s okay. I was busy looking for you, so I didn’t realize you were right there.”

Alex’s brow furrowed. “Looking for me?”

“Yes, someone told me you ride a motorcycle. I was looking for one.”

“I left the bike at home, so I could wear a dress and not worry.” Alex motioned down to the dress, wanting to show off a little bit.

Fatinah looked her up and down. “You look nice.” She did not sound quite impressed, just paying lip service.

Alex’s stomach twisted a little and she decided to ask a tough question. “Are you interested in me because I can come across as butch?” People said it about her, but she rarely thought of herself in that manner. Hell, Maggie made sure she never thought of herself as butch. Not in a malicious way, just letting her know it was okay to be soft and let people see she was soft. It was slow to take, but the few who knew her intimately knew she was more than her agent persona.

Fatinah laughed. “Not hardly. I didn’t even know about the bike until today. I will admit I’m intrigued that you can fight the way you do, ride a motorcycle, and you have a PhD.”

“And a medical degree.” Alex shrugged. She needed to sell herself a little bit, right? She wanted this to go well, even if a small part of her was scratching at her to just stop. She needed to do this to move on with her life. So, be good and get her to like you.

Fatinah’s eyes went wide. “How are you not published more? This is insane.”

Alex just shook her head, not wanting to try to lie her way around that right now. “Let’s go inside.”

Alex paid for the tickets, popcorn, and twizzlers that Fatinah wanted. She was used to this on dates now, but Maggie would have chewed her out for this obvious gendered behavior. Kelly would have teased her about and then bargained her way to paying for dinner. Fatinah just accepted it, which was funny as that was what Kara would have done, and Alex liked that.

Sometimes, Alex just wanted to do something nice for a girlfriend. There were times when she would tell Maggie that and Maggie would still get on her case. Even when she explained, this was just part of who she was thanks to taking care of Kara, Maggie would not let it go. Stop thinking about your ex and Kara while you’re out with someone. Alex smiled at Fatinah to take her mind off of her other thoughts.

Fatinah picked the movie, which Alex went with because after years with Kara, Alex just learned to get along with not picking the entertainment. It was a period drama, which Alex was fine with as a genre, but she did not really want to see the movie. They sat down and Fatinah leaned against Alex. Alex stiffened, but did not say anything. She wanted this to go somewhere, so she could show Kara they were not bond mates and she could stop thinking about Lena.

Of course, as soon as she thought about them, Alex’s brain went immediately to how she did not mind either of them touching her like she did with Fatinah. This was new. Fatinah was new. She just needed to get used to Fatinah, which would come with time. So, just calm down and hang out.

She was about to lean over and tell Fatinah that her sister would love this movie, but Fatinah looked on the verge of tears. Alex took her hand and held it. Fatinah looked at her and smiled. Alex smiled back, even though she did not feel anything during the exchange. Fatinah did not let go of her hand the whole time.

“That movie was so good,” Fatinah said as the credits rolled and they stood up.

“It’s something my sister would watch,” Alex replied.

“Your sister dates Miss Luthor, right?”

“Yes.” It should not bother her that people knew that, but it did because she hated people in her personal business. She hated that people talked about that around Fatinah, probably trying to discourage her from liking Alex.

Fatinah nodded. “Is that why Miss Luthor sometimes has lunch with you?”

Alex glanced at her. “They’re just giving you all the dirt, huh?”

Fatinah shook her head. “I don’t listen to their nonsense. I get they don’t think highly of you, which I don’t agree with. I only bring it up because she didn’t seem happy to see me when I came to your lab. Is it because she doesn’t think I’m good enough for you?”

Alex was not sure how to answer that. Lena was definitely odd around Fatinah, almost possessive of Alex. But, that could be because Lena supported the idea that Alex was Kara’s bond mate. She did not want to think about that, so she definitely did not want to dig deeper, but a voice whispered in the back of her mind. Or she was just possessive of you in the sense that she wants you.

“You’re going off the assumption that Lena cares about me at all,” Alex replied as they stepped outside into the warm air. Stop telling yourself that lie or trying to make it seem like Lena hates you. You know that’s not true and it seems like you’re trying to make her look bad for no reason.

“Well, people have said she hired you as a favor to her girlfriend, but I think they’re wrong. I’m also confused, though.”

Alex arched an eyebrow. “Confused about what?”

“I thought at first you got your job because of your parents work and Lena understood your potential, but then hearing about what you did in the gym, I wondered if your position is a red herring and that’s why you’re in a tiny lab away from everyone else.”

Alex chuckled. “No, I’m definitely a researcher and scientist, like every other lab monkey. I just also happen to be a former agent, who was trained to do other things. I’ve been a scientist since I was a little thing, though.” One day, people would get that someone could be both a jock and a nerd.

Fatinah nodded. “I want to hear about your work at dinner.”

“Okay. Let me walk you to your car.”

“No problem. I’m down this way.” She pointed in the parking lot.

They walked to Fatinah’s car, a sporty coupe, which Alex did not expect. See, don’t judge a book by the cover. There’s layers here and you might like them if you just open yourself up to it. They agreed to meet at the restaurant, and then Fatinah was gone. Alex walked to her car and tried to ignore the utter lack of enthusiasm she felt over this date. She checked her phone as she settled into the front seat, hoping for an excuse to go home early. None came, not even a text from Kara checking on her, which was odd. To the restaurant then.

What is wrong with you? A smart, beautiful omega is interested in you and you’re treating it like a chore to be with her. You keep thinking about Kara and Lena while you should be focused on her. You’re doing the right thing, so commit to it before you do something you regret. That was enough to get her out of the car once she parked at the restaurant. Fatinah waited at the door.

They were seated right away at the restaurant and Fatinah handled most of the talking while Alex scanned the menu. She did not need to, knowing what she wanted, but it was a good way to collect her thoughts without being rude.

“So, I know it’ll sound cliché, but do you come here often?” Fatinah asked.

“Not often, just enough to know the food won’t kill you,” Alex replied.

Fatinah chuckled. “Something to look forward to then. So, why haven’t you published more? Do you have a lot of patents?”

Alex waved the question off, but answered. “I have a few. Hard to publish on the regular basis when running around with the FBI.” She could have published more, but she just did not see the need to do so. She had her patents, had some things that helped field agents, and that was enough. Publishing seemed like bragging and a secret agent did not need to brag.

“So, you were an FBI agent. That rumor is going around, too.”

“The rumor mill about me seems busy as ever.” Months on a job where she barely talked to anyone yet they could not stop talking about her.

Fatinah nodded. “I was surprised to find out most people’s attitude toward you and also how none of them bothered to really talk to you to find out what you’re about.”

Alex put down the menu to focus on Fatinah. “Yeah, it’s been like that since I started at L-Corp. Doesn’t bother me.” What does bother me is that Fatinah seems genuinely sweet and I’m more curious about why Kara hasn’t called me or anything. Is she in trouble? No, someone would have gotten in touch with her if that was the case.

“Definitely their loss.” Fatinah smiled. It was nice to have someone smile at her, but again, it did nothing for Alex. Relax. It’s a first date.

And as far as first dates went, it was pretty good. Nothing embarrassing happened. Fatinah carried the conversation, but Alex answered with clear, coherent responses. She even got a kiss on the cheek before Fatinah got in her car. The problem was, nothing sparked. She might as well have been touched by the wind.

Adding on to the problem, Alex texted Kara on the way home to make sure she was all right. She was fine and in Paris with Lena. For some reason, Alex felt left behind, even though this was what she wanted. Then, why is my heart falling into a pit?

-8-8-8-8-

The weekend trip to Paris was just what Kara needed to reassure herself that Alex was also her bond mate. As much as she enjoyed her time with Lena, there had been something missing, an Alex shaped void. Of course, Alex would not have gone out with them to experience Paris, but it would have been nice to return to her waiting in the hotel. Kara did not say anything as she was certain Lena was tired of her “Alex problems.” She was not crazy and needed to be patient, but she could not. So, here she was at L-Corp, before her lunch with Lena, ready to start trouble.

Alex was not in her lab, but Kara followed the sound of Alex’s heartbeat to the main security office. Alex was in there with Vasquez and someone else. Kara knocked.

“One second,” Alex called and took her time coming to the door. “Kara!”

Kara grinned. “Hey, got a minute?”

“Um, just a minute. What’s up?” Alex stepped into the hall, closing the door behind her.

Kara inspected Alex. “You were sparring again today, weren’t you?” She could see it in Alex’s bright eyes and flushed features. She smelled shower fresh, even though it was past noon. She’ll spar with everybody except me. Kara would whine about this if she needed to.

“Yes, and now we’re doing some analysis. So, what’s up?” Alex studied her, as if concerned.

Kara threw her shoulders back. “I want to spar with you. You know better than anyone that I need the practice and you don’t seem to be avoiding me anymore. Please, help me.”

Alex sighed and rubbed her forehead. “You’re right. You do need the practice. Okay, tonight?”

“Tonight’s good if you’re okay with the penthouse.”

Alex blew out a long breath and her shoulders dropped. “I might as well. I’m not doing a great job at avoiding either of you, especially since you keep pointing it out.”

Kara shamelessly shrugged. “Well, you shouldn’t be so obvious about it and you know we enjoy your company.”

“I suppose I should be flattered.”

“Of course.” Kara smiled. She fought down pointing out that Alex enjoyed their company as well. Alex knew that and just pointing it out would make her deny it more.

Alex folded her arms across her chest and there was a hint of a frown. “You enjoy my company so much, but neither of you said anything about going to Paris for the weekend.”

“You wanted to come?” Kara practically chirped. That was nearly an admission to wanting to be with them. Kara’s soul went light, ready to receive Alex. No, calm down. She’s not ready yet. We have to wait.

Alex turned her nose up. “No! I just like to know where you are in case something happens.”

Kara giggled. “So sweet.”

Alex was not amused, scowling now and her eyes were hard, as hard as they got with Kara anyway. “Yeah, we’ll see how sweet you think I am tonight after we have a training session.”

Kara gulped, even though she already knew Alex would be tough on her. Their night out not too long ago led to a long scolding from Sentinel. Kara did not mind. She wanted to be at the top of her game and she also knew reprimands was one way Alex showed she cared.

“With that settled, I need to get back in there.” Alex pointed to the door with her thumb. “See you later.”

“See you later.” Kara grabbed Alex into a hug. Alex did not hesitate to hug back. She was so warm and welcoming. Kara melted on the inside and had to consciously stop herself from floating as she made her way to Lena’s office.

“You’re looking particularly happy,” Lena said as Kara closed the door behind her.

Kara giggled. “Alex hugged me, like we used to hug. She didn’t hesitate or look around, just came right in when I opened my arms. It was nice.”

Lena gave her a small smile. “I’m sure it was.”

“She’s upset we went to Paris without her.” Kara should not feel smug about it, but she did. Just something else to prove her point.

Lena scoffed. “Or because we didn’t tell her. She puts all her energy into keeping us safe, so maybe disappearing upset her.”

“You tell it your way and I’ll tell it mine.” Kara flopped down on the sofa. “I think she’s coming around.”

“She went on a date Friday.” Lena stated that way too hard for Kara’s liking, but Kara would not be denied.

“And hasn’t said a word to either of us about it,” Kara replied. “If it was worth anything, she’d be silently bragging about how right she was. We would see it all in her face. I saw none of that when I just went to talk to her.”

“Can’t fault that logic.”

“She’s going to come over tonight to spar, but I’m going to try to get her to do dinner and watch some shows or something, just so she remembers how comfortable she can be with me, with us, in our home. You want in? I know you want to give us space, but you being there adds normalcy to our routine. Plus, you like cuddling her and she likes it, too.”

Lena pursed her lips. “Let’s play it by ear. I don’t want to end up cuddled with you both on the sofa and then blast her with pheromones again. It was embarrassing enough that first time.” She blushed, but it might just be from thinking about Alex rather than being embarrassed about the pheromone thing.

“Good idea.” Kara could not wait. “Now, are you going to keep working or are you going to come over here and keep me company?”

Lena chuckled and finished up whatever she was typing on her laptop. They used lunch to plan for Alex’s return to the penthouse and Kara felt herself fall more in love with Lena with each word. It was not just because Lena was willing to help Kara be with her first bond mate, but also because of how well Lena now knew Alex and cared about Alex. It was like when Alex showed care for Lena, first because Lena was important to Kara and now because Lena was important to Alex. How could Alex not see the obvious?

-8-8-8-8-

Lena was not sure how long she expected to play hostess, but definitely longer than the minute Alex allowed her at arrival. Lena answered the door and Alex stepped in. They exchanged awkward greetings and Lena had to consciously glance away from Alex in her workout gear. It was not particularly sexy, except it was because she was very aware of what Alex was capable of and what Alex’s body looked like underneath those clothes. It took all of her willpower not to scent mark Alex. Where is this coming from?

“Do you need me to take anything?” Lena glanced at a duffle bag on Alex’s shoulder.

“Nope. These are to whip Kara into shape.” Alex tugged the bag strap.

Lena nodded. “Okay. She’s in the gym, soaking in red sun rays and waiting.”

Alex walked off without another word, knowing where to go. Lena had to resist the urge to follow. Instead, she busied herself with work. Anything to keep her from giving in to go see Kara and Alex sparring. Do not imagine them pressed together. Do NOT!

It was a good thing Lena had never seen Alex and Kara really spar, as she did not have the brain power to imagine such a glorious sight. But, that only tempted her more. No, stay. If you go see, you’ll end up spraying pheromones all over the place and make Alex uncomfortable. Worse, she would definitely be turned on and want Kara to fuck her, possibly as soon as possible with Alex still around. She could not keep using Kara like that, even though Kara seemed fine with it. It always brought her back to the idea that Kara was not enough. Those people did not mean it how Lena was taking it now, but it still seemed true Kara was not enough. She wanted a dash of Alex. A side of Alex?

But, it should be all right. Kara wanted Alex as well, was bonded to Alex. Kara encouraged her attraction to Alex, so it should be fine, but now that she thought about it, it gnawed at the back of her brain. It was like this proved she needed to be with an alpha because she was an omega. That’s just social norms bothering you, and you should know better than most it is bullshit.

By social standards, one, Lena should not be with Kara because she was an alien. Also, a beta, by human sexual categorization. A human omega should not want Kara and, yet, she did, despite Kara deceiving her for years. Even with that, most people would have told her to walk away from Kara, but she had never been happier than finally admitting her affections for Kara. Society could be damned before she gave up Kara.

And really isn’t that it? You wouldn’t give up Kara for anything, not even Alex. But, yes to having Alex with Kara. Stop thinking about it.

“Hey, Lena, you want food?” Kara asked, poking her head into the office. Her skin glistened, probably from sweat after sitting under hot, red sun lights for so long.

Lena blinked. “Food?”

“Yeah. It’s been a couple of hours. We should eat dinner.”

“Hours?” Lena glanced at the clock. It had been two hours since Alex arrived. Wow, I really zoned out. It was almost scary how these Danvers could distract her, even without being around.

“Yeah. We’re ready to eat. Not gonna do it without you, though.”

“And Alex doesn’t mind me there?”

“No, which is why she’s staying. She even brought a change of clothes and took a shower.”

Lena’s face was on fire. “You told her that her scent affects me?” Her heart hammered in her chest and she felt like she might sob. This was so embarrassing! Of course, Kara probably did not need to say anything. She had embarrassed herself more than enough as an omega around Alex.

“Of course not, but I think she knows. It’s okay. Come eat.” Kara waved her out.

Lena sighed. It was fine. Not like Alex would mention the attraction. She grabbed her notebook and left the room. Maybe Alex would be open to discussing the suppressant idea.

Alex was pulled up to the kitchen island, shoveling vegetable fried rice into a bowl. She had on a black t-shirt and gray sweatpants. Lena gulped and had to consciously stop herself from glancing down at Alex’s waist. Don’t you dare do another pheromone blast!

Kara chuckled and took Lena by the hand, guiding her to her usual seat at the countertop. Kara put a bowl in front of her. Black and green chopsticks laid across the bowl.

“I already made you a mix of pepper steak, broccoli, rice, and dumplings,” Kara said with her shoulders squared, calling attention to herself. She was in even less than Alex, a red sports bra and blue mesh shorts. Well, now I want to touch her body. Lena had to chuckle and Kara grinned at her, very aware of what she was doing to her bond mate.

“Yum.” Lena grabbed her chopsticks and dug in. “So good.”

Kara giggled. “That’s what Alex said.”

Alex blushed. “About the food.”

“Well, obviously about the food. What did you think I meant?” Kara wiggled her eyebrows at Alex.

Alex cleared her throat and turned her attention to Lena. “What were you working on, Lena?”

“Oh.” Lena perked up and her heart calmed down. “I’m still very much trying to come up with suppressants that don’t have a million side effects. Can you look over my notes?” Lena slid the leather bound notebook across to Alex.

“Stuff like this makes me happy to be a Kryptonian,” Kara said, sitting next to Lena. She dived into her plate of food, which was more than both Lena’s and Alex’s meal combined.

Alex scoffed. “Yeah, it’s just this.”

“Babe, if you woke up human tomorrow with a human brain, you’d have to be committed,” Lena remarked.

Kara did not deny it. Even when her powers were blown, her Kryptonian brain tended to process information faster and on a different level than any human brain. While Lena would never say it made Kara smarter, it definitely gave her a different perception than most, which was why it was hard for her to pretend to be human even now. She would not know what to do if that changed.

They ate in silence for a while. Alex got up and grabbed a pen, jotting down notes on Lena’s book. Lena glanced at Kara, who smiled. This could be them every night.

“So, how was sparring?” Lena asked, almost done with her food. She sipped the green tea Kara had ordered for her.

“Great!” Kara grinned.

“Terrible.” Alex shook her head. “She just wants to punch her way out of everything. So like Superman.”

“Hey!” Kara’s grin was now a pout.

“What?” Alex scoffed. “It’s glaringly obvious without your powers that you rely on your powers. For someone with such a superior mind, you don’t try any sort of strategy when you fight. You’re also not very creative. It’s just jab, jab, jab. We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

“So, we’re going to do this again?” Kara asked. She did a good job of controlling herself, but her eyes sparkled.

“We have to. We really have to or who knows what might happen to you,” Alex answered. “I’ll work out a schedule.”

“Won’t that be too much while you’re also sparring with security teams?” Lena asked.

Alex shook her head. “No, since that won’t be forever. In fact, I should be done with them this week. This is just to start an analysis and determine the best way to use security personnel.”

“Okay, as long as you don’t stretch yourself too thin,” Lena said.

“I’m fine.” Alex waved the matter off. “Regardless, Kara needs help. I’d have to stop the security thing if everything gets too much before I stop with Kara. That’s how bad she is.” She winked at Kara.

“You’re so mean!” Kara pouted and then shoved some food in her mouth.

They all laughed a bit, even though Lena did not doubt Alex was serious. Dinner was done and they retreated to the couch. Alex passed Lena back her notebook while Kara put on a television show. They sat with Kara against Alex and Lena against Kara. Lena read through Alex’s notes on her notes. They would have to sit down and discuss this eventually, but for now this worked with Alex.

For a long moment, they just existed like this and it was really nice. Somehow, this felt right. It was not so much that when it was just her and Kara things were wrong or incomplete, but it felt like this would work fine. She glanced over at Kara and Alex. They were serene, at peace, like this was how it was supposed to be. Lena had seen Kara like this before, but not Alex. How can she not admit the effect Kara has on her?

A phone buzzing made them have to shift as Alex needed to get to her pocket. She glanced at her phone, her top lip twitched in almost a grimace, and she typed a quick reply. She grunted and put the phone away. Kara and Lena glanced at each other, but pretended not to notice.

Everything was fine for a few minutes, but then the phone buzzed again. Instead of answering, Alex looked over at them. She peeled Kara’s arm away from where it was slung across her abdomen. Kara whined.

“It’s getting late. I should head out,” Alex said, climbing to her feet.

“What? No! We didn’t even finish an episode!” Kara leaned forward, taking Alex by the hand.

“We can do that later. I really need to go,” Alex replied.

“Why?” Kara whined.

“Because it’s late. See you tomorrow.” Alex leaned down and kissed Kara’s forehead and gave Lena a quick hug. Lena squeaked in surprise, but the embrace was done before she even finished the noise. Then, Alex was gone.

Kara let out a pretend cry. “But, this was so nice.”

“Who was the text from?” Lena asked, suspecting that was why Alex ran off. Hopefully it was nothing serious.

Kara sighed. “Fatinah. She’s got a rose emoji next to her name in Alex’s phone.”

“She probably did that herself.” Alex did not do nicknames or anything special to names in her phone. Even Kara was in there as “Kara Danvers” until Kara changed it to something cute. Alex always changed it back.

“Yeah, but that means she was close enough to Alex to use her phone for an extended period of time. Fatinah’s her girlfriend.”

Lena shook her head. “It’s too early to tell. They just met. You’re not losing Alex.” Not after tonight. There was no way Alex could not recognize how amazing tonight was in terms of simply existing. They could have some sort of domestic bliss and Alex was very aware she was sexually compatible with Kara and Lena. Something had to give, right?

Kara blew out a breath, puffing out her cheeks. “She was so content here with us. Her heart beat calmed down and then it spiked when she got the text. She wasn’t nervous, just panicked, like she was doing something wrong.”

Lena gave a sad smile. “She realized she was relaxing with us like before.” Alex did recognize what they had and maybe that just scared her. Lena knew how that could be, too. It was frightening to recognize and understand the love someone could have for someone who felt they did not deserve that love.

“Yeah.”

“Be patient, sweetheart. Again, she has to come to the conclusion on her own in order to accept it.” Lena looked at Alex’s notes and chuckled. “Funny how such a brilliant woman could be so dense, but I get it. I’ve been there.”

“She’s just a fighter. But, you’re right. History has proven Alex reacts to personal change slowly, on her own terms, and in her own time. It’s just so hard waiting, especially since she really deserves all this and I know she doesn’t think she does.”

Lena gave Kara a tight hug. “Don’t forget, I’m here for you and with you.”

Kara returned her embrace with a warm hug of her own. “I could never forget that.” She kissed the top of Lena’s head. “I’m always grateful for you.”

Lena melted into Kara and they enjoyed the rest of the show. Kara texted Alex once, just to make sure she got home all right. Once that was confirmed, Kara put the phone down for the night. She was learning.

Next time: Alex makes it official with Fatinah, but agrees to hang out with Lena upon Kara’s request.

Chapter Text

5: Exchange

Alex could not lie. She was busy, more so than she ever remembered being, even when she was a secret agent. Her schedule was full, but she made time for Fatinah when she could. Today was a breakfast date, at a cafe close to L-Corp, where anyone could see them as they sat down and enjoyed each other’s company. Fatinah did not mind, even though she had to put with teasing and taunting from other scientists.

“It really is like high school,” Fatinah said before taking a bite of her egg muffin.

Alex shrugged as she cut off a bit of her omelet. She waited a moment and then realized what she was doing. Kara isn’t coming for a piece. Not if she knew what was good for her anyway. “Little do they know, I learned to stop caring about this shit in high school.” She stirred her coffee. It was nice to sit down and catch her breath in the morning. She got to mentally list what she needed to do for the day and plot how she would get through. Of course, she never actually got through it.

“It’s really weird to me to see intelligent people who basically go ‘’ew, you’re dating Doctor Danvers.’ Like this is fourth grade.”

Alex blinked. “Dating?” They had not discussed dating, but yeah. We’ve been out and I need to date, so why does the idea of it make my stomach drop?

Fatinah tensed, sitting up straight. She put her breakfast sandwich down. “Well, yeah. Isn’t that what this is?”

They had been out a few times in the last couple of weeks. Fatinah was all right. She was great to talk to, but Alex did not feel any romantic connection yet. Maybe it would come now that they put a label on them. She just had to open herself up to the possibility. You keep telling yourself that.

“We hadn’t said we were officially dating, but okay. I’d like that.” Alex smiled and then ate some of her omelet.

Fatinah chuckled and picked up her food again. “You’re lucky I’m getting used to you and know that’s just how you or your lackluster response could really give a girl a complex.” She took another bite of her sandwich.

Alex glanced away. “I’m sorry.” Yeah, you need to be more invested in this. She was not sure how she could do that. She could not force feelings or emotions. Just give it time. You’ll be all right. She’s great and she’s into you.

“It’s fine. As I said, I’m getting used to you. The more I’m around you, the more it baffles me that people don’t think you belong at L-Corp. You’re brilliant and strong and damn gorgeous.”

Alex could not help laughing a bit. “You’re good for my ego. But, like you said, it’s like high school. They’ve already decided I don’t belong. It doesn’t matter. I have actual things to worry about.” More things than she liked, but they had to get done.

“Like telling everyone how awesome your girlfriend is?” Fatinah smirked and tilted her chin in the air.

“I’ll be sure to add it to my list.” Alex smiled again and sipped her coffee.

Fatinah nodded. “I’ll be sure to add it to my list, too, even though I’ve already been telling people how amazing my girlfriend is, before she was even my girlfriend apparently.”

Alex nodded. She should feel flattered and special, but there was still nothing. It was not even like a friend complimenting her. Alex was not sure how to take that. Maybe there’s something wrong with me. Well, no, there was no maybe. Something was wrong with her, but this was still new since realizing she was attracted to women. This beautiful, omega woman before did absolutely nothing for her.

Breakfast was finished and they made their way to work. Alex walked Fatinah to her lab and Fatinah gifted her with a quick kiss on the lips as a farewell. Fatinah giggled and disappeared into her work space. Alex sighed. She still felt nothing. This is not good.

Alex put that out of her head as she met up with Vasquez and Devin in one of the main security offices. They all pulled up to the desk with several monitors before them. They had finished with the sparring matches, but were still reviewing tapes and giving feedback to the security teams. The more Alex watched, the less impressed she was. At a certain point, she had to massage her temples. Some of this hurt her head.

“We might actually have to let some of these people go,” Vasquez said, rubbing her eyes with her thumb and forefinger.

“They were hired for their firearms proficiency, not hand to hand skills,” Devin replied.

Alex scoffed. “Well, we have many people with many skills. We need them to be able to handle themselves armed and unarmed.” Lena’s life was on the line, after all.

“So, what, you want to fire people and hire new ones? You’re going to change the dynamic of a lot of teams,” Devin said, voice sharper than usual.

“If it means keeping this building and Miss Luthor safe, then yeah. I’m not here to make friends,” Alex stated.

“Good because you’re succeeding, not to mention overstepping,” Devin replied with a glare.

Alex rolled her eyes and sucked her teeth for good measure. “Do you think I’m after your job? Because I’m not. I’m perfectly happy with my lab monkey role and if you don’t want my input anymore just say so. I’ve got a ton of research just waiting for me at my desk in my dungeon. I’m just trying to help is all.” Not to mention, if she really worried, she would just tell Lena directly and let Lena handle matters.

Devin sighed and rubbed her forehead, annoyance gone already. “Look, I just think you’re trying to make unnecessary changes to something that works. You know what they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Vasquez jumped in. “We patch leaks before the dam breaks. We’re all in agreement from watching the video that there are leaks. We don’t want things to get worse. I've worked with Agent Danvers — I mean, Doctor Danvers — for a long time. She’s here for the best possible outcome with the team and not your job. She’s not a glory hound. You know that. Her first few months helping you out were completely voluntary and she got in trouble for it.”

Devin looked down and pressed her palms together. “I know. I’m sorry. It’s just, some of these guys I hired personally.”

“This isn’t a slight against you,” Alex assured her. “You built a good thing on your own. Our fresh eyes just want to tighten things up. That’s all this has ever been.” Alex did not care about anyone’s feelings. She just needed Lena as safe as possible. Devin nodded and they went back to work, things still a little tense as time went by.

-8-8-8-8-

Lena slid into Alex’s lab, notes tucked under her arm as she tried to balance lunch and two drinks. She eased the drinks onto the table and then looked at the desk. No Alex. Lena checked her phone and nodded. Security meeting probably ran long. She put the food down and settled at the table.

“Hey, babe!” Fatinah walked in and yelped when Lena turned to her. “Miss Luthor!”

“Hi,” Lena said, ignoring a jealous flare that shot through her. This woman had no right to call Alex “babe.” Yes, she does. She’s Alex’s girlfriend. You have no right to be jealous. Her inner omega did not agree.

“I was looking for Alex. I didn’t know she had a meeting with you.”

“She doesn’t. We have a standing lunch date.” That you didn’t need to mention. “She’s at a security meeting now.” Are you trying to stake a claim by showing you know her schedule? You sound like a stalker.

“Standing lunch date?” Fatinah pursed her lips. “I wasn’t aware you were that close.”

Lena resisted the urge to brag. Stay calm and do not ruin this for Alex. She would never forgive you and you would ruin everything. “We’re trying. I haven’t been very fair to her in the past and she wasn’t been very kind to me. We’re working through it.” Maybe Fatinah could go spread the word to the other scientists that Alex was not a forced hire or a pity hire.

“She wasn’t kind to you? Is it because you’re dating her sister?” Fatinah asked.

“Something like that. She kept a secret for her sister that I felt I should’ve been made aware of. It hurt for a long time,” Lena replied. She did not want to make it seem like Alex was a mean person or have Fatinah become suspicious of Alex.

“Do you think she did the right thing?”

Lena sighed, shaking her head. “I’m not sure. I understand why she did it, but I don’t think I would ever concede it was the right thing because I feel like they should’ve told me. I was able to forgive her sister by putting all the blame on Alex, which wasn’t right. So, like I said, we’re trying to work past that.”

Fatinah nodded. “That’s good. She’s a good person.”

“Is she being good to you?” Lena asked and then flinched. “I’m sorry for asking such a personal question when we hardly know each other.”

Fatinah smiled. “It’s fine and she’s brilliant.” That did not really answer the question and Lena was not sure what to make of that. Was Alex not being a good girlfriend? If so, what did that mean? It means mind your own goddamn business.

Lena nodded. “She is. I’m glad you see it.”

“Well, I’m also glad you see it.”

Before the conversation could get more awkward, Alex stepped in. Her eyes went wide the second she saw both of them. Lena had to consciously hold in a pheromone burst. She’s not yours. Stop doing that

Funny enough, Fatinah did not let out a pheromone blast either, so she did not think of Lena as a challenger for Alex’s attention. Well, that was good considering everyone knew Lena was with Alex’s sister. She did not need the rumor mill buzzing over what she might be doing with both Danvers.

“Something going on?” Alex glanced between them.

“No,” Fatinah replied. “I was coming to see if we could go to lunch, but Miss Luthor informed me you have lunch with her.”

Alex nodded. “Yeah, we have lunch every Tuesday and Thursday. We can have lunch tomorrow.”

“Okay. I’ll see you later, right?”

“Of course.”

Fatinah stepped over to Alex, hugged her, and kissed her on the lips. It was a peck that Alex absently returned, but it served its purpose. Alex was hers, so Lena needed to back off. Yes, she’s much more subtle than you are. Then, Fatinah was gone.

Alex looked at Lena, not quite glaring, but also not quite friendly. “What did you do?”

“Nothing.” Lena held up her hands in surrender. “I just told her we have lunch. I promise.” Lena smiled. “Well, and I explained to her why we have lunch with the hope that it’ll get the science division to stop gossiping about you.”

“You didn’t need to do that.”

“I don’t need to do a lot of things, but I still do them.” Lena motioned to their lunch containers, as if that was proof of her statement.

Alex narrowed her gaze, but did not say anything. She sat down and Lena slid her notes over to Alex. As Alex looked everything over, Lena got their food ready. She made sure Alex’s lamb over rice was covered in hot sauce or Alex would act like the meal was a crime against nature. Alex dived right in without glancing up from the notes.

“It’s starting to shape up, at least in idea form,” Alex said before taking a sip of her strawberry smoothie.

Lena nodded. “I’m hoping we can develop it enough for the National City Science Expo.”

Alex choked and her eyes went wide. “Next week?”

“Of course not the one next week.” Lena could not help laughing at how silly that was. “That has had its lineup and displays settled for months. No, the one next year. Do you think we could do that?”

“Oh.” Alex nodded. “I’ll need to finish a project or you’ll have to do the heavy lifting for this one. I can chime in with fresh eyes, like now. The Expo is probably amazing, though.”

“You’re using your lunch break to do work. You’re working on this.” Lena snapped her fingers as it dawned on that Alex did not know some of the perks of working for L-Corp. “Oh, I’m not sure if anyone’s told you, but all L-Corp employees get weekend passes to the Expo, if you want to go see it.”

Alex chuckled. “I’ve always wanted to go, but never had the time. As long as some jerk isn’t wrecking the city, I should be able to spare a day. Maybe go with Fatinah.”

“How are things with Fatinah?”

Alex tensed. “Fine.”

“Alex, I’m genuinely asking. I’m not trying to start trouble. We just want you to be happy. If you’re happy with Fatinah, we’re happy for you.”

Alex frowned. “Is that why you try to scent mark me?”

Lena’s face was on fire. “I don’t mean to. Alex, I really just want you to be happy. My biological response is inappropriate, yes, but not a reflection of what I want for you.”

“Thank you.” Alex ate some of her food. “Are you going to go to the Expo?” she asked this around a cheek full of lamb.

“Of course. I love going, more than just representing L-Corp, but seeing new takes on old gadgets or just something in general. I just need to trick Kara into coming.”

Alex laughed. “Good luck. I can already hear her whining about how behind human science is.”

Lena nodded. “If Cat allows her to write a piece about it, it could work.”

“Except Cat won’t let that happen. Remember the last time Cat went with ‘well, you’ll be there anyway’ and Kara basically wrote an article telling humans to go back to their caves.”

A few snickers escaped Lena. “Oh, god. I forgot that one. So embarrassing.” Lena hid her face in her palm for a second.

“Yeah, for both you and Cat and Kara still can’t figure out why she was wrong.” Alex turned her attention back to the notes. “I think you’re doing something incredible here.”

Lena shook her head. “We’re doing something incredible. Every time I get stuck or confused, I look at your notes and always feel inspired. You’re my science muse.” She did not think about how that sounded until it was out.

Alex actually blushed. “You’re giving me too much credit.”

“You’re not giving yourself enough credit. In fact, you never do. You never take the time out to appreciate how special you are and I’m not saying this in any way beyond a friend who cares about you. You’re incredible and no one tells you that. You’ve accomplished so much in your young life and you act like you’ve done nothing. And you don’t have to say anything to this. Just take it in.”

Alex’s gaze drifted down and she focused on her food. Lena understood all too well what could happen growing up in the shadow of a sibling that did everything you did, but better. Alex never got a chance to chart her own course, unlike Lena. It was fine. Alex would not do things any differently if she had the chance, everyone knew that, but Alex needed to understand she had achieved so many great feats. Alex was just as super as Kara, and even Kara knew that.

“How’s your other projects going?” Lena asked as she dug into her own lamb and rice.

“Well, Devin now thinks I want her job after I suggested letting some people go based on a lack of certain qualifications, not knowing she hired those people.”

Lena nodded. “So, you lost a friend.”

Alex shrugged with one shoulder. “More like an ally. She’ll probably take fewer suggestions from me as she slowly distances herself. I just want to keep the place safe.”

Lena nodded. “I know. What if I hired J’onn on as head of security?” That probably would have been the best thing for her to do when J’onn quit the DEO, but she had always been happy with Devin’s work, even when security broke down. Security generally held unless something extraordinary happened. Alex was trying to prepare them for even that.

“No, he’s happy where he is and she is very good at her job. I don’t think she’s used to being around equally competent people like me and Vasquez, so at first it was probably nice to talk to other people with vision, but now we’re seeing things differently. I think we all just need a second set of eyes to see things we’re not wired to see. Some people like it and some don’t. Honestly, I’m not sure how I’d take it if someone kept looking over my work and added things.”

Lena scoffed. “You wouldn’t mind if the additions were valid. Don’t be upset. I know what you’re trying to do and if you have any real concerns, you know I’ll listen.”

Alex nodded. “I know.”

Lena decided to lighten the mood. “So, if you’re done with the sparring video, Kara and I would like to study them for scientific purposes.”

Alex actually guffawed. “Of course you would.”

“Kara would love Earth science then.”

Alex laughed more. “I don’t understand why it doesn’t bother you. Yes, I get I was here first, but so what? We were never anything official. All of our attempts to be anything more were futile. She’s all yours and has been for a long time.”

Lena shook her head. “Since you’ve always been there, your presence doesn’t diminish how she feels about me. I know Kara still loves me just the same because that bond has always been there. Your attempts to show a physical manifestation of that bond might have been futile, but the bond is there regardless, even if you didn’t do the ceremony.”

Alex’s brow furrowed. “So, should I feel insulted that she developed feelings for you while carrying these feelings for me?”

Lena resisted the urge to reach out and hold Alex’s hand. “I don’t see why that would be necessary. What she feels for me has never taken away what she feels for you. You’re always going to be her favorite entity. But, why does it matter? You have Fatinah and you and Kara can resume your relationship the way it used to be.”

“Right.” Alex’s eyes went back to her food.

“Anything you want to talk about?” Lena was not eager to hear Alex’s love life was in trouble once again. This was one of the reasons Alex’s self-esteem suffered so much.

“No, it’s nothing.” Alex waved her fork. “Never mind I said anything.”

Lena let the matter drop and turned lunch back into science talk. She was confident in this suppressant plan, but Alex’s other projects were so good. Unfortunately, she still worked on them at a crawl because of the security items. She seemed confident once security was settled, she could and would devote herself to her science. Lena knew that was a lie. Alex was as much a soldier as a scientist. But, that was Alex and Lena could not help finding it equal parts sexy and adorable.

-8-8-8-8-

Kara looked forward to sparring nights more than anything else during the day, lunch with Lena being a close second. She liked the time she got to spend with Alex, but after that, all three of them always had dinner and watched a show. It was like everything was as it should be until Alex went home. But, Kara would not think about that right now.

“You ready?” Alex asked as she stepped into Kara’s personal gym. Brainy had taken the time to wire the entire room with red sun lamps. Every night Kara got a taste of how Alex would be able to crush her if she did not have powers. What if Alex had powers? It was almost a scary thought, but Alex would use those powers for so much good. She’d probably be way more efficient than I am. And she would scold Kal-El so much.

“Be gentle,” Kara replied with a pout.

Alex snorted. “Sure, as if Livewire would be gentle with you.”

“Maybe if I ask nicely.”

Alex attacked at that point and Kara was on her back with Alex looming over her. Alex glared at her. “Take it seriously or we’re not doing it.”

“Not even if I ask you nicely?” Kara smiled, needing to hide how much she enjoyed Alex’s weight on her. This was safety. If she ever did lose her powers permanently, she would just glue herself to Alex’s side and never worry about a thing again. Isn’t that almost what you do with powers? It was a good lifestyle choice as far as she was concerned.

Alex scowled. “This is life or death. Now, I’m going to let you up and we’ll really get started.”

“Okay. Okay.” Kara put on her “serious” face and Alex let her up. They got to the real work.

Things progressed as they normally did. Alex took Kara threw the basics and showed her one new thing to try before they got to sparring, so Kara could try the new thing. Alex was all business and never took it easy on Kara, which was why she made such a cute surprised noise when Kara took her feet out from under her and she went down. The sound made Kara’s heart flutter and was such a distraction that Alex was able to yank her down. Kara crumbled on top of Alex and found this position just as nice as the reverse.

Kara wanted to cuddle into Alex and tell her that everything would be all right. To avoid that, she pulled away just enough to look at Alex’s face and that was big mistake. Alex was just beautiful. She focused on Alex’s eyes and made an even bigger mistake. She wanted to fall into Alex’s gaze and float for all eternity. She stopped breathing.

“I really want to kiss you now,” Kara whispered. Part of her just wanted to go for it. Ten years ago consent had been implied between them, but now, things were so complicated.

“But, why?” Alex asked as if it did not make any sense.

“Because I love you and I miss your kisses. You can’t still believe my feelings were just a side effect of being on a solar high.” This has gone on too long.

“And what about Lena?”

“We all know I love Lena, too. Why do you think I’m in love with Lena, but can’t be with you? Why do you think you can’t be my bond mate when you know I could very well have two? It’s rare, but possible. Why do you think you’d mess anything up?”

“Because I mess everything up!” Alex roared, shoving Kara away. Kara grunted as she fell back and they both sat with their legs crossed in front of them. Alex looked away, eyes glistening. “Kara, we both know I always ruin everything eventually.”

Kara wanted to grab Alex into a hug so bad it made her arms ache, but she held off. “How can you still think like this? You’re a hero, my hero. You’ve saved the world. Several worlds. You’ve saved my life, you’ve saved timelines, and so many other things. How can you say you ruin anything when you make everything better as far as I’m concerned?”

Alex sighed, running her hand through her hair. “It’s just how it is.”

“Why? Because you can’t snap your fingers and fix the world? No one can do that, Alex, and you need to stop acting like it’s the ultimate sin that you can’t. Damn it, I have near god-like powers here and can’t fix it. If this was me beating myself up over it, would you blame me for not being able to fix the world?”

“It’s different.”

“Why, because you’re supposed to protect me? You don’t think I want to protect you, too? Do you know how much it crushes me to watch you drown willingly than accept an offered hand because you think that’s strength? Would I be strong if I did that?” Kara did not mean to unload on Alex like this, but there was only so much she could take in being told about her own feelings.

Alex clutched her knees, refusing to look at Kara. “Maybe we should call it a night.”

“Maybe you need to talk rather than run away.”

“I have a girlfriend, Kara.”

“I’m not asking you to do anything more than talk to me. This is about more than us being bond mates. This is about you acting like my favorite entity doesn’t measure up because she can’t do the impossible. It’s about you accepting who you are.”

Alex got up and left. Kara expected that. She would figure out her next move if Alex stayed for dinner. For now, she went to shower. Despite ending early, this session was still intense and she was drenched in sweat. I can see why Alex doesn’t like being like this.

After her shower, Kara joined Lena at the kitchen island. Lena had already plated all the food. Kara chirped.

“You ordered from the Dominican place?” Kara asked as she grabbed an empanada from the edge of her plate of pork, rice, and black beans. Oh, beef! She bit into the beef empanada and moaned as flavor and spices exploded on her tongue.

“We haven’t had it in a while. I figured you’d appreciate it,” Lena replied as she settled in front of her plate of pepper steak with brown rice and beans. She also had plantains, turned away from Kara, so she could not easily steal them once she finished her empanadas.

“You’re up to something.” Kara was not sure of the scheme, but she was happy to get empanadas out of it.

Lena smirked, which all but confirmed something was cooking in that big brain. Kara ate another empanada and Alex joined them, but she could question Lena. Alex sat down at her plate, picked up her fork, but waited for Lena to slide her notebook over before doing anything else. They ate in silence for a moment.

“So, I was telling Alex that our suppressant formula might be ready for next year’s science expo,” Lena said as she held up a plantain, allowing Kara to snap it up with her mouth.

“Ah-ha!” Kara pointed her fork at Lena. “The empanadas are to go to your boring science thing and you sharing delicious plantains is just more bribe.”

“It’s not boring,” Lena replied.

“It is. I went with you. I was so bored you had to take me to the carnival down the street after to make it up to me. So much funnel cake.” Kara grinned.

“Well, we can do that again,” Lena said. “Funnel cake and grilled corn. All of that.”

Kara rolled her eyes. “Still not interested.” She glanced at Alex. “Hey, why don’t you go with Alex? You both can enjoy the science, pretend it’s fun, and talk about the future of L-Corp and then pick me up at the carnival and we all have fun there.” This is brilliant!

Lena and Alex looked at each other and then glanced away. Lena cleared her throat. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea.”

“Why not?” Kara’s mouth twisted. “I’m not trying to set you guys up on a date or anything. You’re still friends, right?”

“Of course,” Alex spoke up first.

“Then, this is a friendly outing. You guys can hang out as friends, geez. Can we please be a little normal?” Kara pouted.

Alex sighed. “She’s right.”

Lena blinked. “She is?”

“Yes. We’re friends. We have lunch together. We went shooting. We both know Kara does hate the Science Expo and we love science. Besides, I’ve never been, so you can show me around. Well, if Fatinah doesn’t want to go the day before anyway,” Alex replied.

Lena swallowed. “Okay, if you’re all right with that.”

Alex nodded. “I am.”

Kara resisted the urge to giggle madly. They crept closer to normal with each passing day, but this would be a true test for Alex and Lena. They would be alone together without the walls of L-Corp to protect them. With luck, they could steer their friendship back on the right path since Kara accidentally planted a bomb between them.

“Just don’t forget about me at the fair.” Kara wagged a finger at them.

They both snickered. “We won’t.”

Next time: Kara’s plan goes into action, leaving Alex to make a decision she tried to avoid.

Chapter Text

6: Date with Destiny

Alex went home fine with the idea of going to the National City Science Expo with Lena. In fact, she actually felt happy about it. Her blood buzzed a little. She looked forward to this outing. Kara was right. They were friends and they needed to work their way around things. But, now, she wanted to see if Fatinah wanted to be her first, so to speak. So, she would see what day Fatinah might want to go and then she could schedule with Lena and Kara.

After a shower, she checked her phone. She had a few texts from Fatinah already. She had checked them while she was at the penthouse, but had not had the energy to respond while Kara was busy grabbing her as they watched a horror movie. It was almost comical the way Kara and Lena reacted to horror movies. Every single jump-scare tactic worked on them. How were they even still alive? It was cute.

Kara had actually been like that since being introduced to the concept of horror movies. Had she infected Lena with her ridiculous behavior? Probably. Or, Lena just took it as a chance to be silly since she did not get that chance often. Either way, Alex just wanted to cuddle them both and let them jump at every corny tactic in existence. She shook that away.

Alex flopped down on her bed and opened her text messages. Fatinah had texted a few messages about her evening and also sent a photo of her empty couch, saying it needed Alex’s company. She smiled and was about to send a picture of her bed, but held off. She really did not want Fatinah in her bed. She did not have that urge and it would not be right to tease if Fatinah actually wanted that. Instead, she called Fatinah.

“Hey, babe,” Fatinah answered.

The nickname made Alex’s stomach twist. Why? I should delight in Fatinah. Alex was so broken and no person would ever be able to fix her, regardless of what Kara said. But, you don’t feel broken with Kara. “Hey. How’s your night going?”

“Would be so much better if you were here. You should come over one day.”

Alex was not sure about that. Again, she did not have the urge to do so, especially if Fatinah wanted to do more than sit on the couch. “Maybe. But, it sounds like you want to hang out and I was wondering if you wanted to go to the Science Expo with me.”

Fatinah groaned, much like Kara at the mention of the dreaded Science Expo. “You really want to go to that?”

“Yeah, I’ve never been.”

“Really? How? I’ve had to go almost every year since grad school. Everyone always swears it’s so amazing, but it’s almost always the same stuff in a different package. It’s boring.”

Alex shrugged, waiting for a disappointing feeling that never came. It did not bother her that Fatinah did not want to go with her. That’s probably a problem. She did not want to think about it. “Oh. Okay. Um, well, Lena asked me to go, if that’s okay.”

“Lena?” Fatinah sounded quite interested now.

“Yes, she was very excited and my sister hates the Expo, so she asked if I wanted to go since I’ve never been.” It would probably be fun. Lena would show her all of the ins and outs, share her favorite companies, and make sure Alex had a good time.

“I can’t believe she’s really excited about it. Again, it’s almost always the same stuff.”

Alex was not sure about that. Fatinah seemed disinterested, so she probably never stuck around long enough to find anything new or intriguing. “Well, I want to go and I think it’ll be fun.”

“All right, I could go Sunday.”

“That’s the last day.” Alex held in a pout. She would not be able to share time with Lena and have Fatinah be the first to show her around.

“I know, but since we didn’t have plans I made plans with friends for Saturday.”

Alex’s stomach dropped. Oh, this is my fault. I should’ve made plans with her. She was just a terrible girlfriend. But, you knew that already. “Okay. That’s fine. So, see you Sunday then?”

“I look forward to it.”

Alex doubted that, but did not call Fatinah on it. “Good. See you then.”

“Yeah.”

They hung up and Alex sighed. This did not feel right, but she was not sure what was wrong. Whatever it was left her exhausted, though. She did not have the brain power to think about right now. She laid down in bed and fell asleep, only for her brain to betray her.

There were flashes of memories of cuddling with Kara and Alex could feel herself relax. There was a rush of something warm and tender. Her heart melted and she wanted to curl around Kara. Then, there were bursts of them doing activities together. Kara’s smiles and laughter washed over her. So many hugs. The warmth inside of her spread, grew, and blanket her in the most comforting way.

The sleep should have been troubling, but when Alex woke up, all she could feel was peace before her brain processed anything. She could feel the dreamy smile on her face. This was not a dream sensation, though. This was how she felt being with Kara without anything between them. Kara’s presence, acceptance, and affection was sunlight on her soul. It’s too early for this.

-8-8-8-8-

Lena took a breath as she stared at herself in the mirror. The dark blue pants suit seemed too formal for hanging out with Alex. Her eyes drifted to the heels waiting for her by the closet. Nothing about this outfit said she was going to hang out with a friend. Kara poked her head into the bedroom and winced.

“No, babe, no. You’re doing a fun thing with your friend, not going to a business thing. It was a business thing until Alex agreed on going and it’s Alex’s first time going and she’s really looking forward to it,” Kara said.

Lena nodded. “I thought so.” She did not know what to wear, though. “I don’t want to make Alex think it’s more than just two friends going out. I’m doing my best not to make things uncomfortable for her.” It was bad enough she kept pheromone blasting Alex.

Kara gave her a little half-smile. “You’re thinking too hard on it. Just don’t spray her with pheromones while you’re out and you’re good.”

Lena shook her head. “I’m never going to live this down. I can’t believe I keep doing that.” With a deep breath, she covered her face with both hands. “Please, help.” She was not sure if she meant that with her outfit or with her attraction to Alex. She needed to get herself under control.

Kara stepped in a little more, knowing her presence alone was enough to comfort Lena. “You don’t really need my help. Dress like you’re going to a science museum with your friend Alex to later meet your bond mate and watch her deep throat funnel cake.”

Lena groaned, but it turned into a laugh in spite of herself. “You had to put it that way?”

Kara’s bright smile was back. “I think it’s enough to knock you back on track.”

“If getting back on track gets you to stop talking, so I don’t have to hear that phrase again, then yes, I am back on track.” Lena marched to the walk-in closet and stared at the clothes on her side. A skirt would probably be best. When she was being comfortable and casual, she tended to wear skirts or dresses. Something she could wear comfortable boots with.

Kara literally hovered in the background as Lena grabbed her change of clothes and put on a black skirt and white shirt with black polka dots. It was flowing and comfortable. She could wear her favorite black boots with it. She went back to the mirror to straighten everything out and nodded in approval of herself. Kara floated up just behind her.

“You look nice,” Kara said.

“And you’re wearing that?” Lena’s eyes drifted to Kara in the mirror.

Kara was dressed in a simple, red shirt with a couple of buttons opened and black pants. “You wanna dress me? Or maybe undress me?” She wiggled her eyebrows.

“I would take you up on that offer, but we can’t be late meeting Alex.”

Kara kissed her on the cheek. “No, you can’t be late. I’m not going next to that place, so you can trick me into somehow going in. In fact, you would have Alex with you, so double the chance of tricking me into going in. I’m going to go play at the fair immediately.”

“Please, deep throat the funnel cake before we show up.”

Kara chuckled and they were on their way, riding in Lena’s car with her driver. Kara held her hand the whole time. Lena smiled, even though her heart pounded a little. Just be Alex’s friend, just be her friend. She could do that. She could be a normal person.

They split with a kiss, Kara heading toward the fair in the distance and Lena going to the front of the National City Science Museum where the large National City Science Expo was held every year. Alex waited for her by some benches off to the side next to the outside exhibit of a catapult. Alex was dressed as expected, in all black with a waist length leather coat with military boots. Oh, come on! I’m one human omega, what does she want from me?

“Hey, were you waiting long?” Lena asked as she fell to Alex’s side. She was impressed with being able to sound normal. And, no pheromone burst. Nice.

“Not at all,” Alex replied.

Lena smiled. “You excited for this?” She wanted to show Alex all of the great booths and displays, but it would take more than the day they had. If only Alex wanted to do all five days, but that was not in the cards for Alex, this time anyway. There was always next year.

“Yes. I’ve always wanted to come here, but I never had the time. The closest I ever got was an alien attack a block over and I got thrown through one of the windows. I didn’t see much then, beyond the rubble I was lying in anyway.”

Lena chuckled. “Of course that’s how you’d get to see it. You’re in for a treat. I come every year as a representative for L-Corp and there’s always something that’s amazing. Sometimes, it gets past the prototype stage and sometimes it doesn’t, but there’s always something here that inspires me. I definitely love checking out any freelance engineers booths. There’s really good, really creative stuff there.”

“Well, now, I look forward to it.”

Lena resisted the urge to take Alex’s hand and stepped away. Alex followed her, walking shoulder to shoulder with her. They had to show their passes to get in and then they were off. The Science Expo always had a bit of sci-fi convention feel to it and Alex dived right in, like the science nerd she was. It was on all three floors of the National City Science Museum. One of the things she liked around it was booths and tables set up next to exhibits that related to the booths and tables. There were several rooms with lectures, movies, and previews for things. It was so much.

The expo was divided by scientific sections, mostly sticking with their spaces in the museum, so Lena led Alex to the section she thought Alex would like the most — biology. Alex’s eyes danced much like Kara’s did when she found a particular food she liked. This was the first time she ever witnessed Alex appearing like a child on Christmas morning. There was so much and so many people, but it was great.

At some point, Alex took her hand and was dragging her from different displays and into talks. Alex dodged people like a shark going through the sea, while keeping Lena close, as if to protect her from the masses. But, she was still a busy bee, eyes catching so many things, darting over to so much. There was not enough time to do everything Alex wanted. They had been there for hours and barely made it through three different sections. They did not even pause to see any L-Corp stuff. Lena would have to come back tomorrow on her own for a proper walkthrough. It was nice to see Alex so keyed up, relaxed, and just enjoying life.

Lena could see shades of Kara in Alex now. She could not help smiling as she watched Alex move. Alex needed more moments like this and Lena wanted to give her them as well as witness each and every one of them. Unfortunately, she would need to see this energy somewhere else.

“Alex, we need to go meet Kara,” Lena reminded her.

Alex turned to her and genuinely pouted. “Oh. Right.” She scanned the Expo, probably taking in how much more there was to see. “Guess it would be impossible to see all of this in a day, huh?” She had the nerve to look like a disappointed child and Lena just wanted to spoil her right now to make her happy.

“Probably.” Lena gave Alex’s hand a squeeze to lift her spirits. “After you come a couple of times, though, you start to narrow down what you want to see. And, as long as you work for L-Corp, you get a free pass.” Lena would get Alex passes to other science conventions in the city or around the state, just to let her experience these things now that she had the time for it. Maybe Alex would like her to join her.

Alex grinned. “So, this was all a ploy to get me to stay at L-Corp. Whet my curiosity, now I have to keep coming back?”

Lena could not help chuckling. “My evil plan is working, I take it?”

Alex laughed. “Something like that. Come on, let’s go meet Kara before she decides to ditch us for a shiny fight somewhere around the world.”

That was all too true. All and all, Lena was quite happy with this trip. It seemed short, but she learned she could be friends with Alex without things being weird, without her acting possessive, and with Alex being comfortable around her. That was worth missing out on most of the Expo.

-8-8-8-8-

Kara was anxious and eager, unable to really focus on the fair around her, which was all right since she had been there several times. She had actually gone home, tried to do some writing, and came back at the meeting time. Lena and Alex were late. It was probably a good thing, but it took all of her self-control to not hone in on their voices and listen for them. It would be an invasion of privacy, especially if they were having fun.

“Kara!” Alex called and Kara turned. Lena and Alex were heading toward her. They were relaxed and smiling. It must have been a good day.

Kara smiled. “I thought you two stood me up!”

“Never.” Lena hugged her and kissed her softly on the lips. “Alex got lost in the Expo.”

Kara turned to Alex and she could see the glow around Alex. Her eyes sparkled and her face was a little flushed. Even her heartbeat was mellow with a touch of excitement. She had a good time and Kara missed it. Her stomach dropped in disappointment. No, it’s probably best you weren’t there. She’d have focused on you rather than enjoying herself. One day.

Kara wrapped her arm around Alex’s. “Tell me everything while we go get some cotton candy.” She loved that there was a year long fair not too far from the science museum. It gave her some place to go every time Lena or Alex wanted to go to the museum, which was frequent.

Lena fell to her open side. “Babe, I thought you were going to do all of your fair food while we were at the Expo.”

“No.” Kara scoffed. “Eating with both of you is half the fun. So, cotton candy and then hotdogs. Oh, foot long hotdogs actually. No, wait, foot long, chili cheese dogs.” Kara could not wait. While she knew they could not eat a bunch of stuff, it was just something about having the experience with them that made it worthwhile.

Alex laughed. “Sure, Stitch. Let’s go.” She was definitely in a good mood, not putting up any fight or any objection.

“Yes, just encourage her madness,” Lena said, but she was right there with them. “Good thing we didn’t eat while we were at the Expo.”

Kara glanced at Alex. “Yeah, because Alex doesn’t believe in eating when she gets caught up in stuff.”

“You don’t know if it’s my fault,” Alex replied.

“Except the fact that you don’t eat when you get excited with things. We all know this,” Kara pointed out.

Lena chimed in. “We do all know this. That’s why we have lunch dates in the first place.”

“I’m not going to stick around here and listen to these accusations,” Alex said, putting her nose in the air. She did not make a move to leave, which bolstered Kara.

“Come on, chili dogs this way.” Kara dragged them both off.

They had chili cheese dogs and fries, sitting down in view of the Ferris wheel. Once they were done with that, it was onto the next thing, which was funnel cake. Lena tapped out after having ice cream. Alex was with Kara through some pizza and a pretzel. But, then Kara was on her own with the food.

“I feel awful. I have to do something to work off this food,” Alex said, rubbing her stomach.

Lena looked around. “What are you going to do?”

Alex stretched like she was about to run some laps. “Time to win some rigged games. Be prepared to take home some giant carnival stuffed animals.”

The twinkle remained in Alex’s eyes as she swaggered off to win Kara and Lena some carnival toys at the games. Of course, she came back with two giant stuffed bears, one green and one blue. Well, they had to do the same in return. Lena showed off her skills at a shooting game while Kara loved knocking down the milk bottles because the game was so rigged the stand operator did not know how to react to her winning more than once.

“I think this is excessive,” Kara said, as they each carried a massive prize in each hand. She hated this simply because it meant she could not hold hands with Alex or Lena.

“But, fun,” Lena replied, almost dragging her teddy bear.

“Yeah, but still might be a bit much.” Alex propped her giant unicorn on her hip, carrying it like a baby. She had a big, gray floppy-eared bunny slung over her shoulder.

By nightfall, they had done everything at the fair, except for many of the rides. Roller coasters and Ferris wheels did not have the same mystic after flying as and with Supergirl. Kara was a huge fan of the Merry-Go-Round, though, so they did that, even though Lena and Alex seemed a bit embarrassed by it. Still, it was a wonderful day, maybe even better when Alex came home with them.

They put their stuffed animals down and showered — separately as disappointing as that was — and settled on the couch in their pajamas. Kara had to fly to Alex’s place to get her pajamas, but it was awesome that Alex wanted pajamas and wanted to hang out. Kara found a movie for them to watch and they snuggled on the sofa. She could not help noticing how relaxed both Alex and Lena were. Listening to their heartbeats made her feel like everything was right in the universe, in their little corner of it anyway.

Kara could not help smiling as she listened to Alex’s heartbeat, especially as Alex curled in closer to her. Even this was different, more comfortable. Usually, she had to snuggle into Alex, let Alex be her protector, but right now, Alex was so calm and confident in herself, she could be comforted and not consider it wrong. This really was the perfect day. And then, Alex ruined it.

“I should get home,” Alex said as the movie ended. Lena was practically asleep against Kara’s side. That was how good the day was. Lena was worn out.

Kara pouted. “What? No, let’s watch one more.”

Alex gave her a soft smile. “I would love to, but I have to get home. I have to go out with Fatinah tomorrow.”

Kara had to consciously hold back a frown. Fatinah was probably a lovely woman, but she was taking Alex from where she should be and today proved that. But, Kara could not say that. She needed Alex to realize that. Although, it was insane to her that Alex could not see the truth after such an awesome day. As it was, Kara sighed and kissed Alex on the cheek.

“Enjoy yourself, okay?” Kara said. She wanted Alex to be happy, but she really wished Alex would not fight the obvious so much.

Alex nodded. “I’ll try.” She did not sound confident, like a person about to go out with her girlfriend. It was weird.

Alex stood up and her gaze lingered on Kara for a long moment. Then, she glanced at Lena and there was sadness shimmering in her eyes. Then, she was gone. Kara sighed. This waiting thing was horrible.

-8-8-8-8-

Alex tried not to fidget as she waited outside of the Science Expo for Fatinah. Yesterday was so perfect. There was no way today could compare, but she would try. It just felt like she was fooling herself the more she tried. You deserve what you had yesterday. They wanted you there and you wanted to be there.

“Alex!” Fatinah grinned as she approached Alex. She was dressed in a beautiful, floral print sundress, showing off her lovely figure.

“Fatinah.” Alex opened her arms for Fatinah and hugged her. They exchanged a brief kiss and as usual, Alex felt nothing. Fatinah attached herself to Alex’s side and Alex could not help thinking of Kara there, Lena there. They warmed her in a way that Fatinah did not. Kara and Lena gave her an emotion she was not sure she could describe, even with her many degrees and worldly experience. Kara had always done that. She felt settled with Kara, like she could just be.

“Let’s get your first Science Expo out of the way,” Fatinah said, not very enthused, but she was here. That was enough.

Alex smiled, did not correct her, and they were off. Alex wanted to explore the places she missed yesterday. She held in a giggle and took Fatinah’s hand, leading her to where Alex left off with Lena.

Immediately, it was different from yesterday. Fatinah just did not have it in her to muster the same energy that Alex had as Alex tried to explore the spaces she missed yesterday. Lena had matched Alex’s energy, even though things were not new for Lena. Fatinah hung back, utterly bored. It was how Kara would be if she was made to come to the Science Expo. Well, maybe if you do with her like you’d do with Kara, you could make that connection you’ve been trying so hard for. Alex sighed.

“How about we get out of here?” Alex said, holding on Fatinah’s hand.

“But, it’s barely been an hour. You wanted to see this place,” Fatinah said, pointing around the room.

“Yeah, I do, but you’re not having a good time and it’s just not the same,” Alex replied.

Fatinah’s expression fell. “I’m sorry I’m not better company. It’s just hard to muster any energy for this, you know? I’ve been here so many times and it’s just so boring to me.”

Alex shrugged. “I know how that can be.” She started for the exit. “What do you think of going to the fair down the street?” That could be fun.

Fatinah chuckled. “To hang out with the twelve-year-olds and tourists? You know that’s not your scene.”

Usually, Alex would have agreed, but she loved it yesterday. Eating junk food with Kara until she was almost sick, winning those toys for Kara and Lena as a way to show off, but seeing the joy in their faces, and accepting prizes from both of them as they played games to impress her. She wanted to experience that with Fatinah. To have something with Fatinah.

“We could have fun,” Alex replied with a smile.

Fatinah stared at her for a moment and then her face brightened. “Okay, let’s give it a try.”

Alex was happy to try. On the way out of the Expo, she spied familiar blonde hair in the distance. Kara had come to the Science Expo with Lena. She had her arm around Lena, holding her close. More than that, she had a smile on her face, not complaining about her boredom. Alex could not help the way her heart dropped. They’d welcome you if you went over there, you know they would. But, she could not do that to Fatinah.

Things did not get much better at the fair, even though Fatinah obviously enjoyed them more than the Expo. Alex won Fatinah a large teddy bear, which Fatinah clutched to her chest like it was worth something. They did the rides, which Alex endured, even though they bored her. And, of course, they did some of the food, but nowhere near the degree of yesterday. It was a nice time, but that was it. It was just nice. It was not yesterday. It never would be. Alex knew what she had to do.

Alex took a deep breath as she sat on a park bench, trying to enjoy the sun on her face, as she waited for Fatinah. It was a few days after the Expo, after she made a tough decision. She got a snack for Fatinah, even though she felt like it sent the wrong signal. Still, she felt bad about this and could not show up empty-handed. Fatinah came and sat down next to her. No kiss on the cheek. No bright smile. She knew.

“I got you one of those little apple tarts you like.” Alex handed her a little paper bag.

Fatinah’s fingertips tapped on the bag. “Thank you.” She took a deep breath. “So, this is it, huh?”

“I don’t want to waste your time, both right now and in general.”

“I don’t understand, though. I thought we had something good going. I mean, I know I wasn’t the best company at the Expo, but is one date really the end?”

Alex shook her head. “It wasn’t a bad date. And this isn’t because of the date.” No, that date was just too easy for comparing and contrasting, so she had to stop denying what was right in front of her.

“Is it because of Miss Luthor?”

Alex flinched. “Why would you think that?”

Fatinah shrugged. “It’s clear you have a close relationship, which I would expect from her dating your sister, but it’s also clear she doesn’t like me much.”

“It’s not that she doesn’t like you.”

“She thinks you deserve better. I know everyone thinks she doesn’t like you, but if that was the case, she wouldn’t be having lunches with you and working with you. You matter to her and that’s good.”

Alex had to admit that now. She mattered to Lena beyond being an extension of Kara just based on how Lena made sure her time at the Expo was worthwhile. It was not something everyone would do. It was something Lena would do for her.

“This isn’t about Lena. It’s just… it’s me. I know it sounds cliche, but it’s me,” Alex said.

“Because of your exes?” Fatinah asked. She had not told Fatinah much about Maggie and Kelly, just that she had been in two long term relationships that did not work out due to her inability to change. I was right, but also so wrong. It was not that she could not change the fact that she wanted children or the fact that she wanted to save lives thus put her life on the line.

Alex sighed and ran her hand through her short hair. “I think it’s more not being in touch with myself, which is why those ex-girlfriends are ex. I’m just lost and only I can find me.”

Fatinah grabbed her hand and squeezed. Alex gasped and stared at Fatinah, who smiled at her. “Believe it or not, I believe you when you say it’s you and you feel lost. I firmly believe if you felt more grounded in your life, you’d finish one of your solo projects and you’d publish more to put your ideas out there for all to see. You’re brilliant, Alex, but when it comes to yourself, you don’t seem to focus. You should focus on you. You’re worth it.”

Alex took a deep breath, willing her voice to remain steady. “Thank you so much.”

“I hope you find what you’re seeking.”

“I hope you find the right person for you.”

“Well, let’s say you set a high standard.” Fatinah grinned.

They hugged and somehow that was that. Fatinah was gone and Alex started a long walk to her destiny.

Chapter Text

7: Regards

Kara blinked as her ears picked up Alex’s heartbeat downstairs. “You expecting Alex?” she asked Lena as the buzzer rang. They had a video shot of who was downstairs at the door, which Kara did not really need, but the visual would be nice to get an idea of why Alex was at the penthouse without letting one of them know or without one of them asking for her. Alex, who never used the buzzer. Alex, who the front desk and security would always let right up. Alex, who would have called or texted that she was on the way. Something might be wrong, but Alex’s heartbeat was not in distress. Turning on the television and seeing her downstairs, there did not appear to be anything wrong either. Weird.

“No. I would have told you if I was expecting Alex, so I could see you being cute and excited,” Lena replied from down the hall. She was in her office.

Kara buzzed Alex in and waited. She hated this waiting. Hated waiting in general. The world already moved slow to her. This only made it worse. It felt like an eternity passed before Alex was at the door, knocking. Kara opened it.

“Hey,” Alex said, voice a little down along with her eyes on the floor with her hands in her pants’ pockets. She toed the floor with one boot, quite bashful. Her heart rate picked up a little. Yeah, something was up.

“Hey,” Kara replied.

Alex glanced up, looking at Kara through her eyelashes. “Can I come in?”

“Always.” Kara stepped out of the way.

Alex came inside and looked around. “Is Lena home?”

Kara eased the door shut. “Yeah, she’s in the back. Should I get her?”

“No, no.” Alex held up a hand. “Not yet anyway.” She ran her hand through her hair.

Kara studied Alex closely. “Is everything okay?”

Alex nodded. “Yeah. Can we sit down?”

“Of course.” Kara motioned to the couch, as if Alex did not know where it was. But, what else could she do? This whole thing was weird. Almost somber. She would think Alex had bad news, but again, her heartbeat was fine.

Alex moved to the sofa and Kara followed. She sat down and Alex sat close, their knees touching and it was warm, even though it was only a little thing. Maybe it was not something serious like Alex made it seem. Alex took a deep breath and then smiled as she locked eyes with Kara. Okay, good signs there.

“I’m ready,” Alex said in a strong, steady voice.

Kara arched an eyebrow. With Alex, that could mean anything. “Ready for what?”

“To accept that you are my bond mate.” Alex turned to face her even more, making their legs touch even more. “The fact that I couldn’t muster up any emotions for Fatinah beyond friendship, and even that might be weak since I was trying for a relationship, and being with you and Lena on Saturday was one of the best days I’ve had in recent memory tell me what you’ve been trying to tell me. I’ve always only wanted to put a smile on your face and it makes me feel like no other when I succeed. I’m never more happy than when I see you smile. I feel at home when you hug me or when we cuddle and I’ve always felt that way. And, I never get to be more myself than when I’m with you. There’s no facade, no act, no part of Alex, like the alpha, the soldier, or the scientist, but all of Alex. You don’t need or want me to change. I get to just exist with you and you accept it. Now, I accept it. I accept all of me, including the part that’s Kara’s bond mate.”

Kara could hardly comprehend the words Alex said beyond the first sentence. Alex accepted being her bond mate. Alex was ready to make her whole, to be whole in return. Kara was speechless, too busy overflowing with feeling. She could not even breathe for a long moment. Did she need to breathe? It did not matter because she could not. She would not be surprised if her nervous system fled her body, twitching just under buzzing skin, trying to figure out what to do right now.

“Kara, say something,” Alex said.

Kara opened her mouth, but nothing came out. She wanted to say a million things. She wanted to shout her happiness to the heavens. She wanted to thank Rao with a billion devotions for this great boon. Then, her brain and mouth agreed with one thing to say.

“Um… can I kiss you?” Kara asked in a breath. That was the only way to prove she heard right… or maybe this was a weird dream.

“Please. Anytime.” A small smile tugged at Alex’s lips.

Kara surged forward, careful of Alex, but eager to feel something she had been denied far too long. The press of Alex’s lips was so much more than she remembered. She almost sobbed as she felt an inner peace she had not realized she missed. This was everything she needed right now.

She cupped Alex’s face with both hands and stroked her skin with her thumbs. Alex whimpered against her lips and Kara lapped at Alex’s mouth. Alex opened her mouth, welcomed Kara’s tongue with her own. Alex caressed her biceps, lost in the kiss, and things could hardly be so perfect. Kara giggled and that broke the kiss. Alex pulled back and smiled.

“I missed that more than I ever could have imagined,” Alex said.

Kara nodded. “Me, too.” And then she laughed again, sounding hysterical. She felt that way, like everything was jumbled up, like there was static inside of her.

“I’m sorry I made you wait so long.”

Kara sniffled and could not stop the tears that flowed down her cheeks. “You’re worth it.”

Alex wiped her tears away with one hand. “I don’t like making you cry.”

“I’m crying because I’m happy. I’m just overflowing with emotion. I’m so happy you want to be with me.”

Alex smiled once more. “I’ve always wanted to be with you. It’s just I have to accept I have these feelings for you or I’m always going to be settling and no one deserves that. Not to mention, I’ll always be burying part of myself and I know that I deserve better. Hell, that I can have better. So, now what do we do?”

Kara took a deep breath and tried to stop crying, but her body needed to do something to resettle. “I’ve imagined this moment a million times.” With a sniff, she rubbed her eyes with both hands. She blew out the breath and focused on Alex. “It’s just us, dinner at the table, and movie while cuddling on the couch. We can do the ceremony whenever you’re ready.”

“You want to have just a regular night on our first night as acknowledged bond mates?” Alex was incredulous.

Kara took Alex’s hand, stroking her knuckles. “Those nights are special. They’re magic. It’s like you’re home. I love it.”

Alex’s smile was now a grin. “I do, too.”

“Good, then stay for dinner and everything.” Kara’s heart jumped at the possibility and her blood buzzed, reminding her of being hyper from too much sunlight.

Alex nodded, but she glanced away. “I still have to go home at the end of the night. While this can feel like home, it’s not home. I can’t intrude on you and Lena’s space just yet.”

Kara nodded. She understood that and expected it. They would have to take this slow. Now, she did not mind. Alex was her bond mate, as it should have been so many years ago. With that established, she could relax and go with the flow.

“But, you’ll come back,” Kara said.

“Always,” Alex vowed.

“Can I kiss you again?”

“Also always.”

Kara could barely contain her joy, humming before she went back in for another kiss. Alex kissed her like she was precious and each movement of her lips whispered promises of a future. It took all of her willpower to pull away because she needed to do something.

“I have to go tell Lena, okay? But, you’re gonna stay, right?” Kara asked, nerves ready burst from her body in both eagerness and anxiety.

“I’ll sit right here.”

Kara got up quickly, but paused to stare at Alex, taking in this grand sight, before rushing off. She giggled as she used her super-speed to get to the home office. She squealed as she entered, which made Lena turn. Lena arched an eyebrow and Kara was on her, kissing her like there was no tomorrow. No, like there was a brighter tomorrow.

“Not that I mind, babe, but why the visit while I’m working and the very nice kissing?” Lena asked.

“Alex accepted being my bond mate!” Kara squeezed her hands into two tight fists. She wanted to dance. She wanted to fly. She wanted to explode! Being hyper on sunlight had nothing on this feeling. This was even better when she first found out about her powers. Better than the first time she flew!

Lena blinked. “Wait, what?”

“That’s why she came over here.” Kara swung her arm behind her. “She has accepted that we’re bond mates. She wants to stay here. Not the whole night, but dinner and the usual stuff and…” Kara just bounced on her heels. This was going to be awesome.

Lena smiled and grabbed her wrists, holding tight. “Calm down, sweetheart. I’m happy for you and you know I love having Alex over, but you’re about to rocket through the roof. You don’t want us to end up worrying over you. It’ll be nice to have her around more.”

“Yeah!” Kara squealed again. I sound like a crazy person. She did not even care. But, yeah, you need to calm down, so they don’t worry about you and we all can enjoy tonight.

“Should we order a special dinner to celebrate?” Lena asked.

“Good idea.” Kara nodded. “We should do something to show this is a happy occasion. Even though Alex seems happy, she’s, you know, Alex, so she also feels down. I know she’s probably depressed that it took her this long to see something we already saw.” Alex was definitely beating herself up mentally. So, this might be a victory for them, but it was also a defeat for Alex in a way. Alex had been wrong and she did not take that well.

Lena nodded. “Well, make sure you love up on her until she realizes it doesn’t matter how long it took her because she’s at that point now.”

“Yes.” Kara wrapped her arms around Lena’s waist and kissed her again. “Thank you for being so understanding. I love you.”

Lena chuckled. “You say that now until I steal Alex right from under you. Or on top of you. Whatever position you two enjoy the most.”

Kara laughed, feeling like she could outshine any star at the moment, and pressed her forehead to Lena. “You can share. I would share with you.”

“I’m sure. Call me when the food gets here.”

“Yes.” Kara gave her a little peck on the lips and then returned to the couch. Alex was still there and Kara felt light once again. Kara embraced her, melted into Alex. Alex hugged her back and kissed the side of her head.

“I’m here, Kara. I’m not going anywhere,” Alex said. Kara utterly believed that and she relaxed against Alex in a way she had not since they were teenagers.

-8-8-8-8-

Lena was not sure what to expect of Kara and Alex now acknowledging their bond, but it seemed to be business as usual. Alex was happy to have a dinner of deep dish pizza. Lena was not expecting that to be the special meal, but Alex enjoyed it. Alex and Kara waxed poetically of the last time they had deep dish pizza. It was a special occasion. They were all smiles and laughs. Again, it was very normal.

Lena was almost surprised when Alex left after dinner and was falling asleep during their television time. It made sense for Alex to leave, but it just felt like Alex should stay. All in due time, though.

A little after that, she and Kara retired to bed. Kara pulled her close, sighing into her hair. She could feel the difference in Kara against her. This was a new state of relaxation, a new level of peace, and it made Lena feel at peace as well.

“Kara, I think we should talk now that Alex has accepted being with you,” Lena said.

Kara inhaled, taking in Lena’s scent. “What’s there to talk about?”

“Well, for one, you can kiss Alex in front of me if you want to,” Lena pointed out, knowing it needed to be said. If not, both Kara and Alex would dance around the issue, trying to spare Lena’s sensibilities.

Kara caressed Lena’s side and nodded. “Good to know. I wasn’t thinking about kissing her. I was just happy she was here with us.”

“Okay, well, I want you to know you can treat her like your bond mate in front of me and I won’t be jealous or upset about it.” She had plenty of time to come to grips with Kara being with Alex and it had always intrigued her anyway. I might finally get to see them together.

Kara chuckled. “I know. You’ll want to watch.”

“I really would.” Lena kissed Kara’s chin.

Kara grinned, appearing quite pleased with herself even in the dark. “I think it’s more about Alex’s comfort than anything else. She’s last to the party, so now we have to see what pace she wants to go with things.”

Lena nodded. “Well, make sure you do stuff with her that doesn’t include me, like you do stuff with me. Make sure she understands she’s special.” Alex needed and deserved that.

“I will.”

“Good.” Lena would have the same talk with Alex at lunch tomorrow to help her understand she did not need to worry over what Lena thought when she was with Kara. Lena completely supported their relationship.

So, in the morning, Lena was practically eager to go to work. Kara watched her move around the penthouse with a smile that lit up Kara’s entire face. The expression made Lena more enthusiastic about getting to Alex. And then lunch could not come fast enough. Lena got one of Alex’s favorite lunches and then made her way downstairs. Alex was at her desk, staring at her computer screen.

“Need an extra set of eyes?” Lena asked.

Alex turned and gave her a small smile. “No. I was just checking on some of my projects and noting my lack of progress.”

Lena put the food down on the lab table and then went to stand by Alex. “Any new observations?”

“Yeah, I keep letting things get in the way of my scientific endeavors. I got caught up in the security details and then just…” Alex blew out a breath and motioned to the computer screen. “Stopped doing this. I let myself interrupt myself a lot.”

Lena was not sure what to make of that. She did not know Alex to lose focus like this. “Do you know why you do that?”

Alex sighed, scratching her eyebrow with one finger. “Not really. This might be some leftover poor coping strategy from college where I got in the way of myself to avoid thinking. I’m all over the place and maybe it was because I wasn’t ready to admit to I’m in love with Kara in the same way I wasn’t ready to truly grieve my dad’s death. I never really stop moving, so I never really process things. I also never realize I leave things I love in my wake. My science now is my dancing after I joined the DEO.”

Lena blinked. “You dance?” Okay, well, now there was another thing she needed to see involving Alex. Maybe Alex dancing with Kara. My brain is going to be mush by the end of this thing with Kara and Alex.

“I used to.”

Lena nodded and her mind almost wandered. No, don’t think about that. Just do what you’re supposed to do. “Come eat.” She patted the table and then took out the food containers.

Alex did not hesitate, stepping away from the computer. Lena held back a smile, but it was good to see Alex ready to take care of herself after a little pushing. She sat down as Lena eased her food in front of her. Lena smiled at her. This was going very well. Alex seemed okay for someone who had a life changing epiphany.

“Are you okay?” Lena asked. Alex was the type to bury things, so it was best to check in.

Alex mixed her brown rice and shrimp. “I am. I know I’m stubborn and I know I was just trying to just… I dunno.” Alex shook her head. “I guess I really just wanted to be right. Or prove I am better off alone. I dunno.” She ran her hand through her hair.

Lena rubbed Alex’s forearm and was pleased that Alex did not pull away. “It’s okay, Alex. You take your time to figure it out. Kara will wait for you and we’re both here.”

Alex nodded and they were quiet for a moment, enjoying their food. Lena started up some conversation. “How is the security thing going?”

“I took a step back. I trust Vas to get this done. It wouldn’t be good for me to be at odds with the head of security. Anyway, thanks for the food.”

“Anytime. Well, with your work life figured out, I wanted to talk about your love life,” Lena said.

Alex flinched and choked. Her face turned red as she coughed a couple of times. “What?”

Lena put Alex’s arms up for her. “Are you okay? It’s nothing bad. I just want you to know you can and should treat Kara as your mate. I won’t be upset, okay? I want you to do everything you would do with a girlfriend with Kara.”

Alex took a few deep breaths, put her hands down, and nodded. “I’ll do my best.”

“Look at you, learning.” Lena smiled. It was so nice for it to not be a struggle.

Alex blew out a breath. “I try.”

“We’ll be here to keep you on track. You just have to let us in.”

Alex nodded. “As you just said, I’m learning.” She motioned to lunch. If this was an indication of how to get through to Alex, they had an uphill climb, but it would be worth it if they were all happy.

“Good. So, I want to suggest you go on a date with Kara.” They needed to do that soon, so they could get into their own rhythm, before Alex jumped back into her head and drifted away.

Alex stared down at her hands for a long moment. “Are you sure?”

Lena touched Alex’s bare forearm and managed to keep down her joy when Alex did not pull away from the skin contact. This was a serious moment. “Go on a date and invite her in if it feels right. Please. I don’t want you to think my existence should stop you or slow you down from your relationship with Kara.”

Alex nodded and took a breath. “I’ll try.”

“Alex, let yourself be happy.”

Alex sighed, resembling a deflating balloon. “I’ll try.”

“Good.” Lena could only wonder what Alex would do as a first date with Kara. She could only see them in Alex’s apartment, eating tacos, and watching television. Them out in the world, experiencing each other and sharing an experience was something they needed, like when they were younger. It would be cute.

-8-8-8-8-

Alex took a deep breath while fighting down her nerves. She invited Kara out and Kara said yes. It was not like she expected anything otherwise, but it was still nerve-wracking to be out with Kara, like really out. This was a date, not an outing, not hanging out. They were a couple and about to do something as a couple.

Alex wanted to do something special that also got them outside. She wanted to dress up and show she was all in for this now. So, she put on a plum-colored dress, did her makeup, and hoped she could stand a romantic stroll in her heels. She wanted to pick Kara up, but Kara wanted to pick her up. So, they agreed to meet up.

“Alex.” Kara grinned and fiddled with her glasses as Alex stepped over to her. They stood in front of the National City Botanical Gardens. Kara loved the plants, artistry, and colors of the Botanical Gardens, but rarely went. They had only gone once together and Kara had a grand time relating a variety of plant life to stuff she recalled from Krypton as well as discussing how she would paint everything if given the chance.

“Kara, you look beautiful,” Alex said and she meant it. Kara was not dressed much differently than she usually did, decked out in a maroon dress, but Alex was finally looking at Kara the way she was meant to do. Not with envy, not with friendship, not with worship, but with pure love. Kara was gorgeous.

Kara smiled and blushed. “You do, too. You’re in a dress.” She squealed and wrapped herself around Alex’s arm. Alex’s heart thumped and she could feel her cheeks burn.

Alex brushed her hair back with a couple of fingers, giving her an excuse to hide her face until the damn blush went away. “I thought you might like it.”

“I do. And, I’m so happy you want to go to the Botanical Gardens. I really like this place and rarely get to go,” Kara replied.

Alex could not help chuckling. “I know.”

And, they started walking. Alex did not have to talk much. Kara was off, comparing the plants to things from Krypton as expected. She did the same with the sculptures and horticulture around them, comparing them to Krypton. She also talked about how the yellow sunlight made the visuals different compared to Rao, the red sun of Krypton. Alex smiled the entire time, enjoying hearing Kara talk and feeling Kara pressed into her side. Her inner alpha felt calm for the first time since being with Lena during her rut.

“I’m not boring you, right?” Kara asked, her bottom lip poking out a little, as if she was disappointed in herself.

Alex’s smile was all too true. “Never.” She grabbed Kara’s hand and gave it a squeeze. “I like hearing you talk, especially when you’re excited to tell me about your home. So, talk all you want and know that I’m listening.” She meant every word.

Kara grinned. “Okay.”

They walked through the whole place with Kara just going on the entire time and all Alex could do was smile. The sun started to set a little way through, which only amped up Kara’s art talk, wanting to describe shadows and highlights and things Alex only knew about because she sometimes watched Kara paint. By the time they were done, the sun was gone, but Kara was still pressed up against Alex’s side like she was meant to be there.

“Do we eat next?” Kara asked as they stepped into the warm night of the busy street. The lights from the Botanical Gardens sparkled, giving the place an entirely different feel compared to the day. Alex resolved to bring Kara back for a night walk one day soon.

“Of course I wouldn’t plan a date with you if there wasn’t food involved. There’s a new Mexican place and I figured you’d like to check it out with me.”

Kara cooed. “Yes. I’m always happy to check out new restaurants with you.”

So, they took a short walk to the restaurant and Alex was pleased her feet did not hurt in her shoes. They sat down and enjoyed a meal together. And, as usual, Kara ate half of Alex’s food and Alex could only marvel that she fought this, that she did not notice this. She could not think of any other place she would rather be than by Kara’s side, in her company, sharing a moment with her, and watching her smile. She reached over the table and took Kara’s hand. Kara yelped and Alex tensed.

“I’m sorry. Should I not have?” Alex asked.

“No. I’m just shocked by you taking the lead like this. I thought you’d be shy, but you’re acting like you do in other facets of life, totally in control of the situation,” Kara replied.

Alex took a deep breath. “I want this. I want you.” It felt good to say. She had to throw her shoulders back.

“I’m glad.”

“I’m sorry it took me this long to realize it.”

Kara shook her head. “Don’t apologize and think about that. We both missed the signs, but it’s okay. We still made it here. I just want to look forward with you.”

“Okay. I’m going to do my best to avoid fighting stuff like this again.”

“And I’ll do my best to turn it down.”

Alex laughed. “No, you won’t.”

“I will not. I am so happy!” Kara beamed and it made Alex feel like she was the sun rather than Kara was the sun. It was incredible to be the reason Kara was so happy. She had to bask in this feeling.

“Then, come home with me,” Alex said. She would love for them to do their usual thing after this. It did not need to be anything beyond cuddling and maybe some kissing, but she did not want this time to end just yet.

“Of course.”

“Do you need to call Lena?”

“Well, we kinda already talked about it and I’ll call her when I get to your place to let her know what’s happening.”

Alex nodded and then dinner was done and they were on their way. As soon as they got through her door, Alex kicked off of her shoes. Her feet did not hurt, but she was not made for high heels. Kara shook her head, but chuckled as she went straight to the fridge and opened the freezer. Kara grabbed ice cream and two spoons while Alex grabbed a bottle of wine and two glasses. They met on the couch.

“You pick something to watch while I call Lena?” Kara asked.

“You sure? You usually pick.”

“I know, but now you can pick. It’s a partnership of equals.” Kara chuckled.

Alex nodded. “Is this what I needed to do to get to pick stuff? Wish I had known that so long ago.” She began to scroll. She had to find something they were not watching with Lena.

Kara did not even turn away as she made her call. “Hey, my love. I’m over Alex’s. I’m gonna stay the night. You okay by yourself?”

“Yes, and hi Alex!” Lena was loud enough for Alex to hear her easily.

“Hi, Lena. I promise to send your bond mate back tomorrow,” Alex replied.

“Take your time. I want you both to find your footing,” Lena said.

“Love you,” Kara said. Lena replied the same and Kara hung up.

And then Kara and Alex got to their show, ice cream, and wine. They snuggled together as usual, but Kara kissed her bare shoulder every three seconds. The kisses were cold thanks to the spoonfuls of ice cream, but it was so nice, Alex eventually ducked her head to get a kiss to her lips. Kara actually hummed against her mouth.

“You taste so good,” Kara said.

“You, too. This is nice.”

Kara nodded. “It really is.”

And, next thing Alex knew they were making out on the couch, like two crazy teenagers. It had been too long since they let loose like this, fell into each other like this, and allowed the world to be reduced to just the two of them with so little space in between it was hard to tell where one started and the other ended. Really, you never noticed you were bond mates? Idiot. Alex let that thought go in favor of enjoying Kara’s mouth.

Alex ended up on top of Kara with Kara caressing her back as they refused to stop kissing. Even when Alex broke away for a deep breath, Kara’s hands wandered to her front, palming her breasts. Alex moaned, burying her face in Kara’s neck. Kara’s scent filled her and all she wanted to do was bite. But, it won’t work. You can’t mark her. You might be her bond mate, but she can never be your mate. Her heart sank and she groaned, pulling away.

“Too fast?” Kara asked.

Alex nodded, not wanting to ruin the night with a reminder of what they had already explored and discovered impossible. Okay, she could not mark Kara, but that did not make them any less bond mates. “Yeah. Let’s go to bed. I think I miss you sleeping next to me, burning a hole in my side while you steal the blanket for whatever reason.”

Kara snickered. “You don’t need a blanket when I’m wrapped around you.”

Alex arched an eyebrow. “But, why you need a blanket is beyond me.”

Kara looked at her like she was insane. “They’re comfortable.”

Alex laughed, as Kara obviously thought that was an acceptable answer. “Of course they are.”

“But, back to this going to bed thing and sleeping next to you. I would love to do that again. Let’s do that again.” Kara giggled.

Alex nodded and they prepared for bed. They showered, separately. While Alex was in the shower, Kara dashed off, probably going to the penthouse for a little while. Kara had clothes over Alex’s place, so she did not need to get pajamas, but she more than likely wanted to check on Lena in person. After getting clean, it was the moment of truth.

They had shared a bed in between when they were teenagers and now, but it was different. They had thought they moved on from silly notions of their youth, which turned out to be their true feelings, and slept unaware of their real bond. Now, they would be fully aware and could completely take in the emotions, the sensations without guilt or weirdness.

Alex turned out the light and they eased into bed together. It was always a little awkward with them figuring out how to sleep. Alex wanted to wrap herself around Kara to protect her and Kara wanted to wrap herself around Alex to protect her. Kara won out by virtue of being taller. So, they settled, Alex on her back with Kara pressed against her side, arms around her, and a leg thrown over her thighs for good measure. And, they fell asleep with the promise tomorrow would be just as peaceful, just as grand, just as perfect because they were finally together.
