Sidekick with a Hero Complex

Summary:

Tommy will never admit he's a sidekick. Never. But when his civilian form is kidnapped he learns that its ok to be in second place.

or

It’s not like Tommy would ever admit to being a sidekick, but it doesn’t change the fact he is. Hero name: Apex, sidekick to Sting. Sting, aka Tubbo, is Tommy’s best friend. They’ve known each other for ages, too long some might say. Granted, Sting is the number two hero in the city, so being sidekick to him must make you pretty good. Still, Tommy would never admit it. In his eyes, and Tubbo’s, they were partners.

Chapter Text

It’s not like Tommy would ever admit to being a sidekick, but it doesn’t change the fact he is. Hero name: Apex, sidekick to Sting. Sting, aka Tubbo, is Tommy’s best friend. They’ve known each other for ages, too long some might say. Granted, Sting is the number two hero in the city, so being sidekick to him must make you pretty good. Still, Tommy would never admit it. In his eyes, and Tubbo’s, they were partners. The stats said differently, because Tommy could only ever get assistance money, rather than savoir.

Savoir money is what heroes call the money they get in addition to their paycheck, because of the people that they save. Even if a sidekick saves the same amount of people, it’s still counted as assisting the hero, and they would get less. Although this didn’t matter to Tommy, as he and Tubbo shared a bank account, so all their money was split between them fairly.

Tommy lives with Tubbo and his husband, Ranboo. Ranboo is a barista at a local coffee shop, near the hero commission building. That’s how Tubbo and Ranboo met, Tubbo wanted a coffee so he and Tommy could stay up all night beating the ender dragon. Ranboo was on a late shift that night, and you could practically see them platonically fall in love with each other. Like a match made in heaven.

“Match made in hell it more seems like.” Tommy had thought while still waiting for his coke that Ranboo conventionally forgot to get from the fridge directly behind him.

Tubbo and Ranboo ended up chatting until Ranboo’s shift was over. Tommy spent the entire time watching Moana. Tubbo then invited Ranboo over so the three of them could beat the ender dragon together. They got married for “tax reasons” a couple months ago.

Currently, Tubbo was fighting a particularly annoying villain called Mask. You guessed it, he wears a mask. Now, Mask is particularly annoying because he targets Tommy. Unlike most Villains who aren’t smart and target the “stronger” one (Tommy disagrees with their judgement). Mask uses his power of creating hallucinations to mentally torment his victims, and recently figured out what gets to Tommy. So Tommy was having a great time at this battle. Tubbo was being extra protective and eventually drove Mask off.

Tommy wasn’t crying. Tommy never cries.

Tubbo ran to Tommy after he was sure Mask had gone properly. By this time Tommy had picked himself up and was swearing at the very gone Mask. In an American accent. Why? Who knows. Tommy’s eyes were red from crying but he was squinting so Tubbo couldn’t see. He summoned a disc and started tossing it as he started walking in the direction of the hero commission. Tubbo was trailing him asking a bunch of questions, ok so maybe he was just repeating one question a lot.

Tommy’s power is called Disk. He has the ability to summon two CD-shaped disks that have extremely sharp edges. He’s perfected the way that you throw them, and can do it super accurately. He uses his wrists to summon them, flicking his wrists in a certain way so no one can see the inside of the wrist during summoning.

Because the disks are CD shaped, Ranboo calls him music man. Tommy used this to his advantage and added music notes to his costume. Which consists of tight black pants with pockets and a long sleeve white shirt. Over the top of the white shirt, Apex wears a red and white t-shirt, the top of it, and the sleeves were red and the rest white.

They entered the Hero commission to see the Head of it standing at the entrance. Flight. His real name is Phil. Phil saw the pair enter the building and ran up to Tommy.

“Are you ok mate? What happened?” Phil said quickly

Tommy looked at Phil with boredom.

“Flight, I'm fine, it was just Mask.” Tommy replied, pushing Phil’s hands away.

Phil looked at Tubbo for a real answer, Tubbo shook his head. Phil let Tommy go and started to walk back to his office. Tubbo stepped out after him.

“Actually, sir, can I talk to you for a second?” Tubbo asked the man, subtly gesturing at Tommy.

Phil agreed and the two stepped into his office. Tommy walked off with a huff towards the locker room. He knew that Phil and Tubbo just wanted to protect him, but he was fine. He is a hero. Things like this happen. Just because Dream knew how to get to him doesn’t make him weak. Right?

It doesn’t matter. Mask doesn’t matter. What matters is Tubbo finishing his meeting with Phil so that they can get free coffee from Ranboo before his shift ends. Tommy quickly changed into his civilian clothes, which consisted of a red and white t-shirt and khaki shorts. He ran his fingers through his longish blond hair and walked out of the locker room. He sat on a couch next to Flight’s office and opened Twitter, and saw that his feed was flooded with pictures of his fight, with things like:

Anyone know why Mask is targeting Apex specifically? It seems so unfair, like I get that he’s a villain, but man, he made the kid cry today, leave him alone! #apexdeservesbetter

Mask took it too far. #apexdeservesbetter

Apex was broken to tears by Mask’s hallucinations today. You guys know that Apex is just a teen. He doesn’t deserve this. #apexdeservesbetter

“Apex deserves better” was trending and his feed was filled with people coming to his support about it. Tommy teared up and smiled at his phone. He closed Twitter and opened angry birds, Twitter had a habit of ruining things that are good.

Tubbo entered Flight's office and sat down across the desk from him. Flight's power is massive wings that can be used to fly. The wings could be retracted a bit for comfort, which made them easier to hide.

“So, mate, you wanted to talk about Tommy?” Flight asked

Tubbo put a look of fake astonishment on his face.

“How did you know sir!” Tubbo replied laughing, “In all seriousness, yes I do.”

“Is this about what happened today?”

Flight lent forward in his chair, worried about the younger sidekick.

“No. It’s about the fact that he’s eligible for a promotion to be a hero and hasn’t been offered it.”

Flight sat back up straight and took off his hat.

“He may be physically ready, but mentally he’s not mature enough yet. If he is promoted to being a hero he will be sent into much more dangerous missions with little to no backup. He will make stupid decisions and get himself hurt.” Phil replied coolly

Tubbo sank back down into his chair.

“I apologise for wasting your time, sir.”

He got up and started to walk out the door, until Phil called out to him.

“You two mean a lot to me. More than the other heroes here. They're only here for fame and money. You two are here to protect, and you love the job. I just don’t want you getting hurt.”

Tubbo smiled and did a quick bow before leaving the room.

Tommy jolted up seeing Tubbo had left the room. The pair went back to the change room so that Tubbo could get into his civilian outfit, which was just a yellow hoodie and black pants. The pair chatted about what they would make for dinner that night. More specifically, they would stop Ranboo from cooking for dinner. Spaghetti. They had spaghetti for 3 nights in a row. Ranboo really likes spaghetti.

They exited the building out the back exit so no one would see them, they walked up to Ranboo’s coffee shop, and luckily it wasn’t busy. There were a couple of people in line but other than that. No one else. The two people in front of them were weird, one was wearing a beanie and glasses that had no lenses, and the other had bright pink hair. Like the villain Blade.

Tommy made a quick note about them and then went to make fun of Ranboo. Tubbo left quickly realising that he needed to put the pie in the oven before it was too late and Ranboo would have to cook dinner. Tommy left a while after, just before Ranboo’s shift ended, otherwise he would be forced to help pack up.

As Tommy stepped outside he felt a hand grab his mouth. He looked ready to kick the person trying to kidnap him until he realised it was Blade. The strand of pink hair that had fallen out of place and now over Tommy’s face was a dead giveaway.

Tommy freaked out until he saw that Blade’s partner Viewer was also here. He couldn’t give either of them any reason to dislike him, otherwise Viewer would be able to see his thoughts. He was stuck.

Eventually, they got the gag on properly and got him to pass out.

Tommy woke up in a pitch-black room. Oh wait, nope not pitch black he was just blindfolded.

“Techno, I swear to god why did you take a child!” A voice shouted from across the room.

Tommy listened carefully to their conversation, and gathered they didn’t know he was Apex. A regular person would be worried about getting kidnapped by two of the most powerful villains in the city, but no not Tommy. Because Tommy is a dumbass. His hands are bound, and he can’t summon anything anyway, they would figure out he was Apex. Yet for some reason he wasn’t scared.

He felt dizzy though. And tired. The voices quietened and Tommy dozed off again.

He woke up with his blindfold removed.

He let his eyes adjust to the light in the room, it was actually quite bright. His vision was still blurry but he made out figures standing in front of him. One had pink hair.

“Coffee shop guy?” Tommy asked groggily

“Not coffee shop guy,” Blade responded with a laugh, “I’m Blade. The villain you should be scared of because I hold your life in the palm of my hands.”

Presumably, Viewer elbowed the man before replying.

“Don’t scare the poor kid. What are you 15?”

Tommy narrowed his eyes at Wilbur.

“I’m 17 dumbass.”

Blade stepped forward towards the boy but Viewer held him back.

“My apologies” Viewer responded

Tommy then decided it would be a good idea the fall off the chair. So he did. And is now on the floor. Viewer tried to get Tommy back on the chair. As He reached his hand out towards the boy he felt a sharp jab of pain. The kid bit him.

“Agh! You fucking bit me!” Viewer yelled, and leapt back, “y’a know what stay on the ground bitch.”

“Ay! You're the bitch that fucking kidnapped me!”

Blade, or maybe his name is Techno, left the room shaking his head at the pair.

“Bitch fuck dickhead fucking bitch dick!” Tommy decided constant swearing was gonna help.

“Go away! Why are you here?!?” Viewer screamed at their child.

“Because you kidnapped me you bitch!”

“Oh yeah forgot I did that. Technically it was Blade that kidnapped you.”

“Pedantic bitch.”

“Shut up, child.”

Viewer put the gag back on Tommy, and muffled swearing could be heard as he left the room.

Ranboo didn't bother to finish packing up the cafe. Tommy was being kidnapped. He called Phil while running back to their apartment. Phil immediately sent out a search team, but quickly realised he had to keep the investigation under wraps. If both Tommy and Apex are missing at the same time people will figure out Apex’s identity.

Ranboo reached the apartment completely out of breath. Tubbo was taking the pie out of the oven when Ranboo burst through the door.

“Tommy! Kidnapped! Blade!” Ranboo screamed at him.

Tubbo dropped the pie.

He sprinted out the door and down the stairs. Blade and his partner, Viewer, are the two most dangerous villains that roam the city. Blade, although he has no power, is known as one of the most brutal villains. He’s a master in most martial arts, and also a blacksmith, creating weapons for him and Viewer. Hence the name “Blade”. Viewer has been known to get under people’s skin easily, as he could read people’s thoughts, as long as he thought badly of them.

With the incident earlier that day, Tubbo knew that Tommy was mentally weak. Tubbo sprinted to his car. Usually, he wouldn’t bother, he lives relatively close to the commission so normally he would just walk, but he needed to get there really fast. Ranboo trailed Tubbo and jumped in the driver's seat before Tubbo could. Ranboo knew his husband and knew very well that he was a terrible driver under regular circumstances.

Flight drove back to the commission in a panic, Tommy was not in a good mental position. He had planned to force the kid to take a mental health break for a couple days at least, and now Tommy was kidnapped. Great. He reached the commission at the same time as Tubbo and Ranboo did.

Although he was not officially a member of the Hero Commission, Ranboo often helped out with computers and things, because Tommy and Tubbo are useless. The three of them entered the building and immediately ran to the computer room to file a report.

Phil left the room to go to his office. He got out his phone and dialled his best friend.

“Come on Wilbur, answer.” He muttered under his breath.

Tommy heard a phone ringing in the room next door. He heard it stop and figured someone must have answered it. He was kinda hungry, cause he never got dinner. He was for some reason craving spaghetti. Blade entered the room holding a bag.

Tommy no longer craved spaghetti.

Blade undid Tommy’s gag, and the ropes on his hands.

“Don’t try anything,” Blade told Tommy with a hint of annoyance in his voice.

“Does that sound like me?” Tommy said batting his eyes.

“Yes.”

Blade took the food out of the bag he had brought. He gave Tommy some McNuggets and a coke. Tommy ate them up quickly, and then stole Blade’s BigMac. Techno looked at him disapprovingly.

“Is your name Techno?” Tommy asked Blade genuinely

“Maybe.”

“That’s a stupid name. My name is so much cooler.”

Techno raised an eyebrow at the boy and started packing up the food. He retied the ropes on Tommy’s hands.

“And your name is?” Techno asked just about to leave.

“Big man Tommyinnit. Bitch.” Tommy replied with a smile.

Techno rolled his eyes and left.

Viewer answered his phone, as he saw it was Phil. Phil was his best friend, and his mentor. Granted Phil didn’t know that Wilbur was Viewer. But he didn’t know that Phil was Flight. He answered the phone and Phil immediately started rambling, too fast for Will’s terrible ass reception to handle.

“Phil, slow down, what's wrong?”

Phil took a deep breath in and out again.

“Wilbur, you remember that kid I told you about from my work?” Phil said, his voice quaking.

“Mhm, Tommy, right?” Wilbur replied.

“He’s been fucking kidnapped. By fucking Blade and Viewer.”

Shit.

The kid Blade took was Phil’s?!

“I- what? That’s terrible! Have you told the commission?” Wilbur asked worriedly.

“Yes, but they have to keep the investigation under wraps for Tommy’s safety. I’m so fucking worried about him Will.”

Wilbur spent the next half an hour comforting Phil about the child that he had just kidnapped. Eventually, Phil had to go, and they hung up. Wilbur then spent the next hour freaking out over the fact he had just kidnapped his best friend's kid.

He fucking kidnapped his best friend's kid.
