Work Text:
“Hey, stay there until I come round. I’ll help you out.”
You rolled your eyes fondly but remained in the seat for a few moments, watching Spencer do an awkward jog around the car to reach your side.
“You know you don’t have to keep treating me with kid gloves, I feel fine.” You told him as he gently wrapped an arm around your waist to help you out of his car. You did feel a slight twinge in your lower abdomen but you decided not to make it known, not wanting to prove Spencer right.
“Studies say it can take up to a month to fully recover after giving birth. Problems related to high blood pressure is very common, combining that with the tears in your vaginal-“
You clamped a hand over his mouth, one of the most effective ways of stopping a Spencer Reid monologue. “I don’t need reminding about those tears, thank you very much.”
He gave a small nod in response so you slowly withdrew your hand then gave him a soft kiss instead. “You’re very sweet for still looking out for me though, thank you.”
“I’m only living up to the vows we made on our wedding day.” Spencer replied. He then stepped back to open the back seat door to retrieve your precious cargo. “Car rides definitely seem to be the way to go to get her to sleep, she’s spark out.”
You grinned as you looked over Spencer’s shoulder to look at your two week old baby daughter. As Spencer said, she was fast asleep, bundled up in her car seat.
“Although I’m not surprised, she looks ridiculously cozy in there.” Spencer continued, “Maybe you should take me out for a car ride, wrapped in blankets, when I can’t sleep.”
You laughed “Your insomnia has just given us an advantage for the first time ever, Dr. Reid. You’ll always be awake to deal with the night-time changes.”
You were joking of course, you and Spencer were a perfect team in the fact that you would take turns responding to the cries of your daughter in the middle of the night (even though Spencer nearly always tried to insist that he would get her so you could go back to sleep. He was such a good husband and absolutely the best dad.)
“C’mon, Amelia, let’s show you where your daddy works.” Spencer murmured to his sleeping daughter before carefully unclipping the carrier from the car and looped it on one arm, the other hand coming to entwine your fingers together.
“Did you let the team know we were coming?” You questioned as you entered the Headquarters.
“No, I thought I would surprise them. Especially looking forward to seeing Garcia’s reaction.”
“I think even if you told her hours in advance that we were bringing Amelia in, she would have been just as excited to see her goddaughter.”
Introducing Amelia to her godparents, Penelope and Derek, was a memory neither of you would forget. Garcia probably disturbed the entire ward with her squeals whilst Morgan got surprisingly emotional holding his goddaughter for the first time.
“Okay, brace yourselves.” Spencer murmured, as the lift indicated that they had reached the floor of the BAU bullpen.
The doors slid open and the floor seemed nice and calm for once. Even though he was on paternity leave, Spencer was still kept in the loop with cases so he knew the team hadn’t been called out to anything that morning.
Just as the pair of you stepped out the lift to make your way to the conference room, Emily spotted you.
“Oh my god! What are you guys doing here?” She asked excitedly. She came over and gave both you and Spencer a quick hug before averting all of her attention to the baby. “Oh here she is, the little angel.”
“Hm, she wasn’t such an angel at two am, but I agree…right now she’s being the perfect baby.” You mused.
“Oh you need to let your mummy and daddy sleep, little one. We can’t have your daddy’s brain turn to mush, we rely an awful lot on it.” Emily whispered loudly to Amelia.
“I don’t know, you all seem to be managing pretty well without me.” Spencer replied.
“We know that Morgan has been texting you for your thoughts. He makes it way too obvious by the stuff he comes out with, literally trying to pass your ideas off as his own.” She laughed.
“I am hurt by that accusation.”
The three of you turned to see Morgan exit his own office, an empty coffee mug in his hand. You watched as his face lit up when he saw the carrier still in Spencer’s arm.
“You finally brought her in!”
“Of course, we had to show her the famous BAU. It is of course the place her parents fell in love so it’s a very important place.” You said, pressing a quick kiss to Spencer’s shoulder.
As if she was suddenly realising that she was becoming the focus of a lot of people’s attention, Amelia began to fuss, her little feet kicking out under her blanket.
“Oh you’re getting annoyed at all this talking, huh?” Spencer murmured to his daughter. He rested the carrier on a nearby desk and then very gently pulled Amelia into his arms, her tiny head snuffling into the crook of his neck.
“I never thought I would say this but I want one. I really want one.” Emily cooed, her hand coming to rest over her heart.
“Yeah, she’s pretty great.” You grinned, watching with such a full heart as Spencer pressed soft kisses to the top of Amelia’s head.
“I’m happy to stay on Godfather duty. I’ll take her for the fun times and then happily hand her back for the sleepless nights and diaper changes.” Derek laughed.
“Why on earth did I have to hack into the security cameras to see that you had brought my goddaughter in rather than somebody telling me straight away?” The click-clack of heels and Garcia’s voice was heard all the way down the corridor and within seconds, the whirlwind of blonde hair and a pink outfit was drawn to Amelia.
“We were going to bring her into your lair.” Spencer promised her, “Thought she would have liked all the lights.”
“Of course she would, my lair is dark and warm, it’s practically like being back in the womb for her.” Garcia shrugged.
All four of you grimaced, the subject of your womb was not something you thought would be brought up in conversation.
“Can I give her a cuddle?” Garcia asked, her hands already held out as she looked at the baby longingly.
You watched Spencer hesitate. Even though your husband was so much better at the whole germs and physical contact thing, you knew how reluctant he was to let his baby daughter be exposed to so many germs, especially when she was so young.
“Are you okay if we still wash hands before holding her?” You came to Spencer’s rescue.
“Yes! Absolutely! I will be right back!” Garcia promised before running back off in the direction of the toilets.
Again, Amelia began to whine in Spencer’s arms, bored of the lack of movement.
“Why don’t we go and see the others, hm? Let’s see if you can be the only one to take Hotch’s attention away from paperwork.” Spencer said to Amelia quietly. After a quick nod to you to check you were okay with him taking her for a walk around, he left in the direction of Hotch and Rossi’s offices.
“I never thought I’d say this but fatherhood was made for him.” Derek mused.
“I don’t know, I always thought he’d be good.” Emily shrugged, all of you still watching him. “And she is going to be the smartest kid in school!”
“Oh absolutely.” You laughed. “He’s already started to read her Tolstoy. From memory of course.”
“I thought I heard your voice!” JJ exclaimed as she exited her own office, a bundle of files in her arms. She quickly deposited them on a nearby desk and pulled you into a hug. “You are looking gorgeous! I did not look this good so soon after giving birth to my boys.”
“Oh shut up JJ, you still looked incredible.” Emily scoffed.
You blushed from JJ’s compliment. Even though Spencer was still absolutely in love with your body, possibly even more now that it had provided him with his daughter, you were still a bit insecure about the baby weight you still carried.
“It’s probably the first time I’ve brushed my hair and put makeup on since having her, you should have seen me this morning.” You replied with a laugh. You looked up to Hotch’s office to see him and Rossi both fussing over the baby. “Excuse me, I better check up on them. She’ll be wanting a feed shortly.”
“I’ll make you a tea, still loving peppermint?” JJ asked.
You had to hold back a grimace. Even though you once hated peppermint tea, it was all you craved throughout your pregnancy. However now that Amelia had been welcomed into the world, you had gone back to despising the stuff.
“No thanks. Earl Grey would be lovely.” You said before leaving the gang to head up to your boss’ office. “Room for one more?”
“Always for you, bambino.” Rossi said with a smile. He came and pressed a kiss to your cheeks. “You’re looking beautiful as always.”
“Stop flirting with my wife, Rossi.” Spencer quipped.
“I’m not! I’m just thinking she would make a wonderful fourth wife.” Rossi replied with a wink, making you laugh. “I am going to be dropping another lasagne to your house later, I know you won’t have time to be cooking anything.”
“You don’t have to-“
“Of course I do! Anything Papa Rossi can do to help.”
“Hey (Y/N), it’s lovely to see you.” Hotch added in after finally tearing his eyes away from Amelia. You adored the fact that Hotch became a completely different person when children were around- he definitely morphed into Aaron, Jack’s loving father, rather than Hotch, feared BAU Unit Chief.
“And you, Hotch. How did the final of Jack’s soccer game go? Did you manage to lead the team to victory?”
“You remembered! We did, three-nil to us.” Hotch gestured to him and Rossi. You still found it completely endearing that the pair of them coached a soccer team every weekend.
You were about to tell him that when Amelia gave a pitiful cry from Spencer’s arms.
“Ah. Like clockwork.” You mused as Spencer carefully handed over your daughter. “Excuse me, this little one needs a feed.”
“You stay in here, you can shut the blinds and make it private. We’ll go to the conference room for a while.” Hotch told you as he gathered up his papers.
“Are you sure?”
“Absolutely. However long you need.”
Hotch and Rossi quickly vacated the office whilst Spencer shut all the blinds. You got yourself comfortable on Hotch’s couch and unbuttoned your shirt, allowing Amelia access. Like the angel she was, she latched on immediately.
“Go down and see the others. I’m sure you want some different company for a change.” You told Spencer as he came to sit down next to you.
“There’s nowhere else I’d rather be right now.” He promised sincerely. He wrapped an arm around your shoulders and then gave you a sweet kiss. If someone had told him when he first joined the BAU as an inexperienced, scared young adult that he would one day be showing off his daughter to the team, he would never have believed it.
Yet here he was, with you, the love of his life, and Amelia, his other love. And neither of you could be happier.
