Work Text:

Kyle always knew he was different, and not just because he was Jewish or a ginger although in a town like South Park those things were seen as different.
But It was deeper than that.
For as long as he could remember he knew something was off about himself gender wise.
Normal things like being called ‘young man’ or dressing masculine made him uncomfortable.
It didn’t make sense until Cartman faked being transgender to use the girl’s bathroom, when Kyle learned what ‘transgender’ meant it was like everything she felt her entire life suddenly came together.

Although she was glad to have a name to this feeling, it scared her.

It scared her a lot.

Stan was the first to find out when Kyle confided in him, he was her best friend after all. she had to tell somebody, it was becoming too much to keep to herself.
He was very understanding and kind.
Stan started holding doors for her and treated her more like a girl.
not in a bad or weird way,
just little ways of acknowledging that he saw her the same way he saw Bebe, Wendy or any of the other girls.
Although he did like Kyle more than them.

Kenny was the second to find out,
Stan, Kyle and him were hanging out without Cartman so Stan helped Kyle come out to him.
They all hugged and Kenny was more than okay than having a girl as a friend, he was honored.

She never got around to telling Cartman, and she had reason to.
He was an asshole who made fun of every part of her.
She could already invision him reminding her everyday ‘you aren’t a real girl Kial’
and telling everyone he knows at every chance he got.
Or at least that’s what she thought would probably happen.

She would just let him find out with the rest of the school..

Anyways, you are probably wondering how her parents found out.
Gerald was first..

“Hey sport-
woah- what are you, uh.. doing there?”
Gerald looked at his son who was on his tippy toes at the bathroom mirror, applying Sheilas makeup.
“Mh!”
Kyle gasped, surprised by her father suddenly entering,
‘why the hell didn’t I lock the door?!’ She thought
she dropped her mothers red lipstick she was previously applying and it fell onto the bathroom counter.
“Dad I- I can explain”
Her eyes began watering and her cheeks reddened. She wished she could disappear right now.

Gerald stared at Kyle, eyeing the 10 year old child up and down before finally saying something
“Kyle, are you gay?”
The young girl was taken aback,
“What- no! I’m not gay”
she said truthfully.

“Well.. Why are you wearing your moms makeup then kiddo? Is it like, a hobby? Or..”
Gerald was confused and knowing she had no way out of this she decided she’d just get it over with.
“I’m..”
she signed a shaky breath and looked down, not bringing herself to look at what she excepted to be her fathers disappointed face.
“I’m transgender..”
The tears that were already building in her eyes ran down her cheeks and she wiped them away with the back of her hand, She choked out a sob.

“Oh? Uh..”
Geralds expression wasn’t one of anger or disappointment, just surprise. A man like him didn’t know anything about this stuff after all. Only what he’d see in town and on TV.

“So, you wanna.. dress like a girl?” Gerald asked trying to understand
“no dad, I AM a girl”
she looked pleadingly at her father with her tearful eyes. hoping he could understand, at least somewhat.
“Ohh.. I see..”
Gerald slowly nodded, feeling many emotions-but not anger.
Before either of them could say anything else, Ike appeared behind Gerald at the bathroom doorway.
“Bwrother!”
Ike innocently said and smiled, holding onto the doorframe with one hand and his father’s leg with another.

Sheila walked fast down the hall to retrieve Ike.
“Ike! Come on now, you have to get chang-“
Sheila was mid sentence when she had looked up from Ike into the bathroom where Kyle stood, red lipstick was messily applied on her face and she had been crying.
Kyle backed up to the wall, wanting this nightmare to be over with.

“Kyle, what is this about?!”
Sheila asked in her usual loud voice, switching her eyes from Kyle to her makeup laid out on the bathroom counter.

“What have you been doing playing with my makeup!?”
She wasn’t mad, more just shocked and not expecting any of this.
Gerald turned to his wife and put a hand on her shoulder

“Hunny, Kyle has something he needs to tell you, be calm-“
Sheila looked at Gerald and then to Kyle.

“Kyle, sweetie, what’s wrong dear?”
Sheila tried to lower her voice as much as she could, walking into the bathroom towards her child.
“You know that whatever this is, you can tell me.
I love you, Kyle.”
Her face was one of concern and care.
The young girl wiped her cheeks with her hands and sniffled.
“M-mama, don’t be angry”

“I promise Kyle, I won’t.”
Sheila kept her voice low and calm.
A few seconds followed before Kyle spoke.
“I know everyone says I’m a boy but I’m not one mama”
“Then what are you Kyle?”
Shelia asked
“I’m a girl”
Shelias mouth was slightly agaped
Gerald put a hand on his wife’s back, both parents now stood looking at their daughter while Ike innocently stood at the door watching them.

“I’m sorry mom”
Kyle began to cry again.
“Oh no, Kyle sweetheart- don’t be sorry about anything!”
Sheila walked forwards and brushed her daughters short curly red hair behind her ears
“It’s completely fine with us, Isn’t that right Gerald?”
She turned to her husband behind her and gave him a ‘say yes’ look.
“Oh yea, of course it is!”
Gerald said.
“We will always love you Kyle, but we will need time to get used to it, okay sweetie?”
Sheila held Kyles face in her hands and wiped her tears from the little girls cheeks.
“Tha-Thank you”
Shelia embraced her daughter and held her close.

She decided that her new name would Kaylee, it wasn’t too far off from her dead name but it was pretty and feminine and she liked it that way.

“You are pretty today Kaylee”
Kenny said through his parka in his usual muffled tone. Admiring his friend.
“Yea, you look great!”
Stan gave a thumbs up and smiled.
“Thanks guys, I appreciate it”
The girl smiled.

But just as happiness came, it went with HIM..

The fat kid ran down the sidewalk until he stopped at the yellow sign, catching his breath he started
“Hey guys! GUESS WHA-
Cartman stopped mid word , when his eyes reached his green hat friend.
“Woah, what the shit is this. Has Kyle lost a bet or something?!”
Cartman began laughing and pointed at her while the other three kids kept serious faces, waiting for the fatass to wipe away his tears of laughter.
“Dhaha..
ha.. uh..
what’s really going on you guys?”
He stopped laughing after a minute or two, and realized that nobody was laughing with him, not even Kenny..
He loved making Kyle upset but it didn’t feel too good when he looked over and saw tears in his friends eyes.
His smiled disappeared
“Kial, I’m sorry”
Cartman said
“It’s Kaylee now.”
She said.
Cartman suddenly understood the situation, he knew what transgender was. He had used ‘being transgender’ as an excuse to get what he wanted before after all..
“Kay-Laih, I’m sorry”
Cartman coughed
“I will try to not misgender you Kial- I mean Kay-Liah, shit! But you see I can not control it, it seems.. I guess I’ll have to work at it.” Cartman said trying to sound sincere
Kaylee sighed
“Okay fine, but you have to promise me that you won’t joke about it..”
“Kay-Liah, I swear that I won’t joke about you being trans-ginger.
Like, ever.”
The fat kid said with a serious face,
crossing his fingers behind his back. Because of course he didn’t actually mean it.

“Hey, that reminds me- have any of you guys seen the new Terrance and Philip episode!? It was actually crazy”
Stan broke the awkwardness.

“Yea dude! It kicked ass!”
Kaylee responded.
“Yea!”
Kenny and Cartman both said.
The four friends began talking about the events of their favorite cartoon, And although there was a slight difference in the group of kids,
some things never change.

The four stood at the bus stop, waiting for the bus to arrive and the day that lied ahead in the town of South Park.

The end.
