Eurydice was doing fine even without Orpheus. She had her voice and her cooking, and it was all she really needed. Sure, she missed him; she had spent more of her mortal life with him than without him, and it was difficult to let that go, but she didn’t need him to be happy.
Now that she has him back, though, she recognises just how much she’d missed him before; the way he touches her with his dexterous lyre-playing fingers, the way he sings for her like he never sings for anyone else, the way he looks, the way he speaks, they all come back to her vividly upon their reunion, and yet they all feel so novel still.
They lie together in Eurydice’s bed, holding each other close, as Orpheus sings a lullaby he used to sing all the time back when they were alive. The tune is so familiar, yet it reverberates differently in the flaming heat of Asphodel, making it sound like a new song altogether.
The song finishes, and Eurydice smooches his cheek loudly, hugging him even closer. “I haven’t heard that one in a while.”
Orpheus leans into her every touch. “I don’t think I’ve sung it in just as long, you know. This one is for your ears only.”
Eurydice smiles. Ever the romantic, her Orpheus. She wouldn’t have it any other way. “Any other songs that are for my ears only, love?”
“All of them, should you ask it of me. But for now…” He breaks into song again, one finger languidly tapping the rhythm on her arm. Eurydice recognises it immediately; she’d written it, after all.
She can’t help but join him in song, their voices in harmony like never before.
