Doumeki knew he was dreaming, that was a rather strange feeling but he didn't allow it to disturb him too much and watched the scene unfolding in front of him. His dream self is wearing his high school uniform and has an anguished expression on his face, others have always commented on how he never showed his emotions on his face, how he was impossible to read with just one look. But in the dream everything is on the surface, the things inside his mind, his heart, too big to be controlled.
There is a woman with him, she has long black hair and she was wearing a black kimono with butterfly details in white and red. And she looked sad.
"Are you sure you're willing to pay the price?" the woman says.
He doesn't know her name but he knows that's not a question she asks often.
"Yes I am." his dream self says, he is miserable but at the same time he has no doubt of that decision.
And then his cell phone alarm rings, pulling him back to reality and reminding him that it's time for his shift to start.
Doumeki stretches out on the bunk and goes to the emergency room of the hospital where he would be on duty that morning, he already knew all the ways of the place, this is the first year of his residency but he had also been an intern in that institution in the previous year and was one of the first to receive a formal invitation to continue there. He barely entered the emergency room when the doors opened and the paramedics came in pulling a gurney with a young man on it.
"Male patient. Unidentified. Between 20 and 30 years old. Found unconscious on the street. He continues to lose and regain consciousness. High fever. Coughed up blood in the ambulance." one of the paramedics says.
While Doctor Nozaki connected the patient to the machine Doumeki was in charge of putting on the breathing mask. When he got close the guy on the stretcher opened his eyes momentarily and Doumeki saw that one of his eyes was blue and the other an amber brown very similar to his own. Exactly like his.
"Doumeki?" he says in a weak voice before losing consciousness again.
