Approaching his apartment, hand in hand with Alec Magnus was feeling a sense of deja vu having done the same so many times with his Alec over a hundred hears before and the feeling overwhelmed him a little, barely managing to shake it off by the time they reached the door and giving the young man a smile he made a thing of unlocking the door and following Alec inside.
“So, coffee?” Magnus asked, slipping his jacket off and holding his hand out to take Alec's.
“That would be great.” Alec replied, walking through the apartment behind Magnus, taking in the décor, which unknown to him hadn't changed since the day Magnus' husband had died. “This place is amazing.”
“Thank you Alexander.” Magnus smiled, turning on the coffee machine and grabbing to cups from one of the kitchen cabinets. “I could see that you were engrossed in the film, is that your favourite genre?”
“Yeah, I mean I like various genres but fantasy is my favourite.” Alec nodded. “My mum has one of those channels that shows all the old movies, so I grew up on Harry Potter and Marvel films.”
“Classics.” Magnus agreed, handing Alec one of the mugs. “Lets go and sit down.”
Magnus lead the way back to the living room and sat in the blue armchair, a little relieved that Alec chose to sit on the sofa as he still saw the other one as his husbands.
“Have you read the Harry Potter books too?” Magnus asked him.
“I have, and although I loved the films, you have to agree that the books are so much better?” Alec replied.
“Oh, I do.” Magnus smiled at him. “Is that your favourite kind of thing in the fantasy word, magic and wizards?”
“Very much so, I mean I love to read all sorts of fantasy fiction, but with magic ...” Alec hesitated for a moment before continuing, laughing softly. “It's like something you wish was real and hidden from us Muggles.”
“I know exactly what you mean.” Magnus agreed. “It would be so cool to find out it was real, wouldn't it?”
“Can you imagine it, suddenly discovering that people could actually do spells and make potions?” Alec replied enthusiastically. “It would be the coolest thing ever.”
“What about the other stuff that might go with it.” Magnus replied. “Vampire, Werewolves and Warlocks? Demons?”
“Well, if they did exist then my must also live in the shadows.” Alec said thoughtfully. “I mean you never hear of people being attacked by something that would be considered supernatural.”
“Maybe there are people that keep them in line, so to speak.” Magnus suggested. “And deal with those that commit crimes against Muggles as you say?”
“Wouldn't that he so cool!” Alec blurted out, then laughed causing Magnus to smile at him. “You probably think I'm a weirdo now.”
“Nope, not in the slightest.” Magnus grinned at him. “Who knows what might live in the shadows.”
“Somehow I don't think we will ever know.” Alec replied a little sadly. “But I can imagine and that's good enough for me.”
“What if you did find out, if you discovered a secret.” Magnus asked. “That no other Mundane knew, would you keep it to yourself, maybe to protect everyone else?”
“I think I could.” Alec replied thoughtfully. “I wouldn't want to put my family or friends in danger.”
“You wouldn't freak out?” Magnus pushed.
“Maybe at first, hey wouldn't you?” Alec grinned.
“Maybe.” Magnus smiled. “So, I asked you back for coffee because there was something I need to tell you, what I found out about your family tree that the person you hired couldn't find.”
“Really? Someone was able to trace my ancestors back further?” Alec asked excitedly, putting down his empty mug. “It is really interesting?”
“I just need to get something.” Magnus said, getting to his feet. “I'll be back in a moment.”
Magnus went to his bedroom and took the notebook Clary had given him from its hiding place, took a deep breath and then headed back to the living room, this time sitting on the sofa next to Alec. He opened it to the family tree that Clary had drawn so carefully from Alec's great, great great grandfather backwards.
“So, there's the ancestor the person you hired managed to trace back to.” Magnus explained. “As you can see he had a twin brother and his original surname was Lightwood as you knew and he comes from a very long line of Lightwood's.”
“And your friend found all this out, how?” Alec asked, scanning the detailed family tree. “And why he changed his name?”
“He fell in love with a woman his family didn't approve and when he refused to break up with her, they disowned him.” Magnus explained. “They felt it was very wrong for him a marry a woman who wasn't … like them.”
“So, they were raciest?” Alec frowned.
“No, at least not in the way to mean.” Magnus told him.
“Then how?” Alec pushed. “You can't tell me that then not explain what you mean.”
“I want you to think about the conversation we had when we first got back here.” Magnus told him. “Because what I am about to explain, there is a huge chance that you will think I am making what I tell you next up, that it is impossible.”
Alec's eyes grew wide. “He was a Wizard?”
“No, not a wizard.” Magnus said. “You remember I suggested that maybe there were people who kept the Supernatural from harming Muggles?”
Alec nodded, wondering where exactly this was going.
“He, your great, great, great grandfather was something called a Shadowhunter.” Magnus explained, watching Alec closely for his reaction, keeping it simple. “He, his family and many other families were all Shadowhunters, trained to fight demons.”
“You have got to be kidding me!” Alec huffed, positive that Magnus was making fun of what he had said earlier. “And you know these people, so what are you, some kind of … Shadowhunter too?”
“No, I'm not a Shadowhunter, but my husband was.” Magnus told him, sadness causing his eyes to well up. “He was an amazing, brave man and he died a long time ago. A very long time ago.”
“The man you told me about, on my birthday in Pandemonium?” Alec asked gently, seeing to look in the other man's eyes. “How long ago?”
“Yes, I wish we could have been together forever but Shadowhunters, like Mundane's as we call humans have a normal life span.” Magnus explained.
“Like humans? Mundane's?” Alec asked gently.
“Shadowhunters have angelic blood, but they are half human.” Magnus told him.” Considering his next words carefully, knowing that could send Alec running. “He died over a hundred years ago.”
“Now I know you are having me on.” Alec retorted, about to get up and leave. “You are obviously in what, your thirties, or so/ This is a bunch of lies.”
“I'm only half human myself.” Magnus admitted, grabbing his arm and looking Alec in the eye. “Please, don't leave, I need to explain and then it's up to you if you never want to see me again.”
“Okay, explain.” Alec replied, sitting back down. “You are half human? Are you part angel too?”
“No, my father was a demon, a prince of hell to be exact.” Magnus told him truthfully, wanting Alec to know the truth. “I am a Warlock and more than nine hundred years old.”
“Really? So, you can prove it to me?” Alec asked, folding his arms.
Magnus closed his eyes, still worried that he would scare the young man away, then opened them again.
“Okay.” Magnus told him, leaning over to wave his hand over Alec's coffee cup, noting the shocked expression on the other man's face when a blue, hazy light emitted from his hand and then with a click of his fingers the cup was refilled with steaming, hot coffee.
“Fuck!” Alec exclaimed, gulping hard, unable to take his eyes off the coffee, thinking it would vanish like an illusion if he did. “Is that real?”
“Very.” Magnus replied simply.
“It could be just some kind of illusion, like a magician would use at a kids party.” Alec replied, still not believing his own eyes.
“Stand up Alexander.” Magnus told him, making an impulsive decision and getting to his feet then offering his hand to the other man.
Alec took Magnus' hand and let him pull him up onto his feet and they walked to the middle of the room where Magnus let go of his hand again and without a word Magnus set about making a portal, hearing the young man's gasp beside him as the ring of blue magic appeared before them.
“It's a portal. Trust me?” Magnus asked, taking Alec's hand in his own again.
Alec nodded slowly, completely speechless and walked a little hesitantly with him, into what Magnus had called a portal and when they exited onto a beautiful beach with clear blue skies he fainted to the ground.
The End.
