Work Text:
Tobio sunk back into the chair, letting the wind flow through his hair, watching as the afternoon light drew to a dim, the sun falling behind the line of trees in front of him. Hinata was on the ground by his feet, basking in the last of the light. Its warmth coaxing purrs out of him.
The sound filled Tobio with a sense of peace, his own Omega wanting nothing more but to purr back, but like every other time he withheld the urge.
It had been 2 days since he and the rest of the Karasuno pack had arrived in Tokyo for the training camp they had been invited to by Nekoma. Amongst them were three other schools: Aoba Johsai, Fukurōdani and Shiratorizawa. 5 schools in total that were all staying on school grounds in an estate located behind Nekoma’s school's back fields.
“There you guys are,” Tendo called out as his head peeked out from around the corner, “A few of us are playing kings if you guys want to join.”
Tobio hadn’t known many people before coming here, but now it felt like he knew more people than he had ever known in his whole life. He especially liked meeting all the other Omegas from the other teams, finally being able to bond with Omegas alike that he had never been able to do previously.
Tobio tilts his head, “Kings?”
The name was identical to what people referred to his past controlling behaviour as. So hearing it spoken in such a nonchalance way was uncanny. It made him uneasy.
“Have you never played?” Hinata piped in from the floor, sitting up in bewilderment.
Tobio shook his head.
Tendo hummed thinking of the best way to explain the game's concepts, “Well technically it’s like spin the bottle but without the bottle. It’s very similar to truth and dare but doesn’t go around in a chronicle order but rather spontaneously. There are sticks with numbers on them, and whoever draws the stick with number 1 will be crowned ‘king’. The king gets to order the other numbers around to do whatever they want. What makes the game super fun though is that no one knows the other people’s numbers until the king sets his order. It’s a big mystery which people ‘the king’ will pair together and then each round you redraw.”
Tobio wiggled where he sat. He wanted to play and it must have shown because the other two Omegas laughed.
“I promised Kenma that we were going to hang out,” Hinata began, frowning, “but by all means, Tobio?”
That comment put a big concrete wall in Tobio’s way. It stretched from one side to the next. He couldn’t see around it, over it or under it. He didn’t know if he could do it without the other.
“Iwaizumi and Oikawa will be there,” Tendo sang.
Tobio straightened up, turning to face the red haired Omega with big questioning eyes.
Tendo nodded.
Tobio didn’t let doubt seep back in as he chirped, giving in as he nodded.
“Great,” Tendo grinned, wrapping an arm around the boy's shoulder, “Then I'll be taking you with me,” He finished as he led him back through the hall and into the room that he and the rest of the Karasuno pack were staying in.
“You should see the state of the room. It’s under siege,” Tendo added as he gently pushed Tobio in to the room.
The noise hit him first. Tendo hadn’t been lying when he said that his pack room had been taken over, as it bustled with the noise of chatter and movement. In the middle of the room, 7 people: Oikawa, Iwaizumi, Kuroo, Bokuto, Akaashi, Lev and Yaku sat in a circle. Around the edges of the gaming circle sat many of the other team members lazing around and just plainly chilling amongst one another.
Akaashi smiled tenderly at Tobio as he patted the spot in between him and Yaku.
Once again Tobio became unsure however not wanting to defer in hesitation a second longer, he found himself seated in between Yaku and Akaashi a second later.
Across from him, Iwaizumi and Oikawa sat together closely. The pair of Alphas had been dating for over a year.
Iwaizumi tilts his chin while Oikawa greeted smuggly, “Hello Tobio-chan nice of you to join us.”
Tobio’s cheeks grow warm, pinking in colour and suddenly the wooden floorboards are more interesting than life itself.
“Now, pretty little thing,” A deeper voice cooed towards Tobio and Tobio looked around in search of the voice and there next to Oikawa, Kuroo sat grinning his sharp pearl teeth, “your eyes are too stunning to be looking down at the ground, keep that head of yours high.”
Tobio’s pink cheeks were red now.
“Leave the poor thing alone, will you!” Tendo scolded as he walked around the small group huddled in the middle of the room.
During this time, Tobio re-found Oikawa and Iwaizumi’s eyes before smiling softly at them.
Both Alphas smiled back fondly.
It felt refreshing to have the environment like it was. Everyone was lively, not wasting a single moment of the camp, and it made Tobio feel lively.
“Everyone ready?” Tendo asks as he settles onto a bean bag in between Yaku and Iwaizumi.
Everyone nods.
“Let's get this shit started then!” Tendo cheered as he drew 9 sticks from the box in his hands and placed them messily down into the middle.
A pause and then the game started, “Alrighty…. Shuffle!”
On command, 8 sets of hands dive into the middle. Tobio stumbled, a step behind, still just trying to get the gist of the game.
“Who is the Kingー!?” everyone shouts before all the sticks are flipped.
Tobio turns the wooden stick in his hand to reveal【 3】.
Yaku is cheering as he flings his wooden stick into the middle, showcasing【 1】 - which must mean that he was King.
The tiny Omega grins evilly as he peaks over at Lev’s number. The Alpha squeals and tries to hide his number in time, but fails.
“That's cheating!” Oikawa accuses.
Yaku only shrugs his shoulders, “He should have done better at hiding it. Plus, don’t act like you didn’t do it last year when you ordered Iwaizumi’s exact number to make out with you, the ‘King’.”
Lev is practically shaking in his skin, scared of what was to come.
“I order that【 5】 not be able to speak for 5 turns of the game and if he does, he is to get his ass handed to him by the king of this order. ME ,” Yaku ordered, smiling triumphantly.
“But… But that’s not fai-” Lev began but was screaming a second later as Yaku round kicked him. Impressively from his seated position.
“I said silence!” Yaku ordered.
Lev opens his mouth once more, but quickly closes it, thinking better.
Yaku sighed in contentment, “yes! Finally, some peace and quiet.”
Once again the game is set back up, sticks placed back in the middle and shuffled.
Once the words, “Shuffle!” ring again, Tobio launches for the middle, getting the first stick of the draw.
Tobio yet again turns the wooden stick in his hand, and this time to reveal【 7】
Bokuto was then cheering, “It’s me! Me! I’m the king!”
The other players don’t feel the same enthusiasm as many groan.
“Damn it! What's your order?” Kuroo curses into the question.
“Hmmm let me think… alright number【 2】 must hold hands with number【 7】 for 4 rounds with no exceptions of letting go otherwise punishment is slaps to the back. The decider being a roll of two dice,” Bokuto smiled.
Tobio tensed, Number 7? Slaps to the back?! That was him!
With wary eyes, he scans the circle only to spot Iwaizumi frowning down at his stick before he said, “Okay then which bastard do I have to hold hands with?”
Tobio cleared his throat, “well, that bastard you would be referring to would be me.”
The Alpha addressed tensed up, “Ahhhh... what I meant to say was prince.”
“Suck up,” Oikawa sneered beside him.
Iwaizumi lashed a hand out but Oikawa laughed as he dodged to the left and Iwaizumi growled before he got up and made his way over to Tobio who awkwardly scooted to the right to allow room for the Alpha who took the spot up with ease.
“May I?” Iwaizumi asked.
Puzzled, Tobio wondered out loud, “Huh?”
“Your hand?”
“Oh… right-,” Tobio laughed stiffly, “-here,” he said before his right hand swooped into Iwaizumi’s, however at the direction of their arms it established a weird angle for their bodies, which in Tobio’s case produced scorching pain through his twisted back.
Iwaizumi laughed at their awkward position, before he was curling his body around the younger to try to lessen the strain on both their bodies. He semi lifted Tobio into his lap, which they both found to be a bit more manageable.
Tobio however grumbles at this.
“It's your fault you know,” Iwaizumi accused, “If you hadn’t just randomly pushed your hand in mine then we could have done this properly, but now we're stuck like this for 4 rounds.”
The pain was better but not fully gone, with Tobio’s wrist still straining in Iwaizumi’s hold.
Like the Alpha had read Tobio’s mind, he was suddenly moving their hands without losing contact and aligned their fingers perfectly before intertwining them, “better?”
Tobio nodded, blushing as infinite warmth radiated between their interlaced fingers, seizing up his arms like an electrical circuit. Going through his fingertips all the way down to his toes.
“Next round,” Yaku urged as each member placed their sticks back into the middle and demanded, “Shuffle.”
Yet again 9 hands reached for the middle, but as Tobio launched forward he felt himself slip from Iwaizumi’s lap, their very fingers loosening. He could feel his hand slipping from Iwaizumi’s.
Shit! he thought, not having enough time to both catch himself and not let go... They were going to lose, and it would be his fault if they got punished.
“I’ve got you,” Iwaizumi said as his spare hand wrapped around the boy's middle, drawing him back, their hands slipping back into place.
Tobio couldn’t help but feel guilty, “Sorry.”
“There’s nothing to fret over. We didn’t lose contact, did we? So we're still in the safe zone,” Iwaizumi reassured.
The next set of rounds go by with ease.
Akaashi is crowned king next. He starts off easy, ordering that number【 9】 must hold a handstand for a straight minute.
Lev only got to 10 seconds before he dropped, face planting into the ground. His body weight and height too much for his body to hold. Yaku was left in hysterics.
On the next shuffle Tendo is crowned and orders numbers【 2】 ,【 3】 and【 4】 to transport themselves into a rap competition and must freestyle until one is voted the winner.
Oikawa, Kuroo and Yaku get up into the middle before breaking out into lyrics and words, rhymes and sayings alike before at long last Oikawa is voted the winner. The Alpha was surprisingly an amazing singer and each of his melodies flowed perfectly into each syllable.
Next, Tobio was taken by surprise as he was crowned king. He ended up ordering that 【 8】 must lay in the lap of 【 4】 . It was funny to see Kuroo curled up in Lev’s lap as the Russian Alpha pruned his head Alphas' hair, taking the joke a step further.
Even as rounds 4, 5, 6 and 7 roll around, the game continues to bustle and build in anticipation. It’s when the game reaches its 11th round though that the remaining people in the room quiet down, listening and watching as the game enters the hardcore phase.
“Number 8 must kiss 2,” Kuroo suddenly orders, smirking at the order.
Silence. The whole room went silent at the sudden up in intimacy. No one moved, awaiting to see who would be the 2 key players in this scenario.
Tobio raised his hand timidly, “Umm~ …That would be me.”
Akaashi froze, not liking the sound of that, and asked, “what’s your number?”
“2.”
“No! Nope! Put that hand down!” Akaashi demanded, not liking the game's sudden outcome one bit.
“I can’t… It really is my number,” Tobio said.
Tendo shook his head, really starting to regret inviting the Pup to play, “I told you he is too innocent for this.”
“It’s just a simple kiss. It doesn’t even need to mean anything,” Kuroo said.
“Heck no! There is no way in hell we're letting the Pup get kissed,” Akaashi hisses. He looked towards Tobio and asked, “your first?” to which he received a nod, “okay this is even more of a reason. Suga might not be around, but this is his Pup. So I say no!”
“Akaashi it is the rule of the game-” Bokuto whispers.
“Screw the rules!” Akaashi snaps, taking everyone back. The usual down to earth Omega going slightly feral.
“Oh come on, it can’t be that bad,” Oikawa's suddenly pips in, which earns him multiple growls from the Omegas, and he quickly raises his arms in surrender. “Look I’ve known Kageyama for more than 3 years, so I’ll take it easy on him. Okay?”
Heads tilt before realisation sets in.
“Your number 8?” Iwaizumi asks.
Oikawa nods before rising to his feet, walking over to where a fidgety Pup sat.
Smiling softly, Oikawa crouches in front of the ocean eyed Omega, who was currently finding everything else more interesting than the game and him.
“Tobio?” Oikawa whispers, gently taking the Pup's chin with his thumb and drawing the Omega’s water puddles to his, “You have nothing to worry about.”
Tobio couldn’t help the whimper of fear that spurred from his lips. He had never kissed someone before, and he didn’t know how to act or what to do. He really didn’t want to embarrass himself in front of someone he looked up to.
“Do you trust me?” Oikawa asked, dropping the Pup's chin to interlace their hands instead, and asked again, “Do you?”
“I do,” Tobio utters, scared that his voice might fail him.
Oikawa raises an eyebrow.
Tobio takes a deep breath in to calm his rising nerves, closes his eyes and says, “I always have.”
Oikawa thought the simple action to be pretty, the other's long eyelashes tickling his very cheeks.
Tobio whined.
Oh, this is fun, Oikawa thought before leaning in and when his lips were a brush away from Tobio’s and it looked like he was about to make contact he swerved suddenly to the left and his lips met the skin of Tobio’s cheek instead.
Ocean eyes flash open in a daze.
“Are you okay?” Oikawa asked trying to hid the smugness in his voice
Tobio did not respond, his eyes blown wide. His face shock stricken.
“I said kiss,” Kuroo exclaimed.
Oikawa smirked back at the Alpha, “yeah, and I did.”
“No, you didn’t,” Kuroo accused.
Oikawa grinned at his best friend, “You never said where. So I would say it’s a win-win-” looking back towards Tobio, “So how was it Tobio-chan?”
Tobio could do nothing, his whole body paralysed by the affection and act alone. He could feel his cheeks grow hot but could do nothing to hide them with his hands still at his side in Oikawa’s light grip. His cheek tingled and burned where the Alpha’s lips had been, and his body worked overtime. His blood pumping triple the amount it should, leaving his lungs to work oxygen to his brain as an act to try to slow down the repetitive thumping.
A squeak left his mouth as a response to the Alpha’s question.
Only then did Oikawa pull away and return to his original seat and into the arms of Iwaizumi, who took him in wholeheartedly.
After this order, the game was discontinued.
