Work Text:
I can’t stop thinking about her. I am distracted. Everything in this office reminds me of her. I look out the door at the desk that is now occupied by the new Emily and I can still see her. Those caring brown eyes, the megawatt smile. How she greeted me every morning with, “Good morning, Miranda.” I can still hear her voice saying, “Yes, Miranda,” to my every command.
What is wrong with me. I have never given any spare thoughts to any of my assistants and certainly not an ex-assistant. An ex-assistant who walked away from me during the most important week of my year. Perhaps that is why I can’t shake her. No other assistant would have dared do something like that.
I need to get out of my office. “Emily,” I call for my first assistant. She appears quickly in my office. I don’t give her an opportunity to say anything before I am giving her a list of directives. “Reschedule my afternoon, I expect Jocelyn to be prepared for the run through first thing tomorrow. Send the new girl to retrieve the samples from Michael Kors. I am leaving for the remainder of the day.”
“Yes, Miranda,” she replies. It is so different from the way Andrea says it. It’s just not as sincere or warm. I make my way down to the lobby of Elias-Clarke and see that my car is not waiting for me.
I call Emily. “Do you know where I am?
“I’m sorry, Miranda. The driver got stuck waiting for a delivery truck.”
“I don’t understand why it’s so challenging to get my car when I ask for it.” I end the call as I see my car pulling up. I look across the street and there she is. She looks so lovely. So beautiful. She nods at me, smiles, and waves. I just stare at her for a moment before finally getting in my car.
