    Staring at Jenny—Jenny, making her usual annoyed-but-weirdly-soft face, standing there like she was totally okay—something close to breaking in Faith finally snapped. With a wordless sob, she lurched forward, tackling Jenny in a fierce hug.

    Jenny gasped, falling awkwardly back onto the floor—but hugged Faith back all the way, tight and fierce, pressing kisses into Faith’s hair and whispering the kind of mom things that Faith had always wanted someone to say to her. Stuff like you did amazing and baby I am so so proud of you and don’t ever put yourself in danger like that again.

    Summary

    "Come on," Buffy says. "Let's talk about it."

    There's a small, younger version of Faith that senses this might be a trap and she feels that urge again to run. But Buffy's expression does not seem to be towing that line between love and hate at all. Sure, there's a barely concealed eye roll when Faith doesn't move toward the bed, but Buffy is also looking at her with concern. Faith feels, for the first time, the freedom of someone being mad at her and knowing they're not going to hurt her. She feels the freedom of being frustrated with someone and not wanting to hurt them. So Faith drops her shoulders, unclenches her fists, and walks over to the bed.

    Faith had always figured forgiveness would feel like a prison, like you were forever indebted to the person who gave it to you. She and Buffy had been indebted so much throughout their young lives that she never wanted to give them something else to follow. Faith had figured the thing she wanted the most in her life was freedom.

    Now, forgiveness actually feels like freedom, like it's not contingent on a thing. It was something given to her of someone else's own volition. Buffy calls it a gift, which Faith will never admit makes her heart feel like it's thawing. It makes Faith feel like someone cut a tumor out of her, hacked away at whatever dark mass was living inside her, and stitched her up. She has so much more room now.

    She wrenches her eyes up from her feet and to Buffy’s round face, framed by strands of sunrise-hair, orange and gold, a blurry canvas of smeared oil-paint. Her eyelashes catch every fleck of dust and Faith aches, body hollowing out, liver and lungs shoved out of the way to make more room for love and grief and something bigger than that, even.

    }

    Buffy inhales her like a starving woman, thumbs curled around Faith’s jawline, eyes slammed shut as if when she opens them, Faith will filter through her fingers like sand. Faith’s head explodes, thousands of little champagne bubbles of joy bursting in her brain as she pulls Buffy even closer to her, nails biting into fabric and the slightest hints of skin. Gravity, or lightning, or hundreds of breathing fairy lights pull Buffy in, crushing her beneath the weight of love that sleeps side by side with mourning.

    She knows that she should have made a back up plan. She knows that she should have warned Van that she might be waking her up to join her hunting. She wasn’t logical though. When it comes to Jackie, lately Natalie thinks she’s lost all sense of logic. She’s dressed, rifle at her back, leaning against the door the next morning, waiting for something- someone- she knows won’t come. She was stupid. She was mean. She did what she always does- lash out at any sense of kindness offered towards her because she doesn’t understand how to accept it. Jackie is kind. She always told herself that she was mean and privileged and spoiled and cruel. But she knows that it’s not true. Maybe she always knew, and it was just easier to believe that someone so beautiful outside just had to be ugly inside. She wonders now if any part of Jackie is ugly, because she’s yet to see it. She’s hurt. But she hurts differently than Natalie does. When Natalie hurts, it’s teeth and claws and blood. She hurts viscerally, inflicting hurt back on anyone who either did or could possibly inflict it on her. Pain is something to be shared, scattered across others to reduce the amount held. When Jackie hurts, she holds it all. Tucks it deep into her chest and feels it fully before absorbing it, refusing to let anyone else suffer from her own pain. Maybe pain is the one area of Jackie’s life that she’s selfish with, unwilling to share.

    You want to tell her that when you were 16 you bought a purple pen just to say that you knew how to write in girly colors, that you knew how to be a teenager, young and light and in love, and you wrote Faith Summers and Buffy Anne Lehane all over graph paper in scrawling script just because you could, and then when you were done you took the paper and ate it.

    [...]

    You want to call her by her name. You want to say Buffy Anne Summers, and say it again, and again, and again. You want to tell her that every room was either one with her in it or one that lacked her. And that distinction is the only thing you are capable of remembering. You want to tell her that when you met her that first day and put on a show it was just that - a show - and that what you really are is the tenderness and weakness she hates being able to perform.

    }

    You want to touch her like she’s precious, which would be unthinkable in any other context but this is Buffy, this is B, this is the girl who makes your heart quiver like antique china in an earthquake and you already know you are doomed to love her until love is nothing but the sound your mouth makes to describe what you are when you’re around her.
