Summary
Dean Winchester is a stressed-out, burned-out Manhattan attorney who has just been chosen to handle the biggest trial his firm has had in years. Struggling with not only the anxiety of his job, but also the end of his years-long relationship with Lisa Braeden, Dean finds himself in a New York City bar one night looking for any kind of release. That release ends up being a guy named Cas, who is all disheveled dark hair, blue eyes, and a Led Zeppelin t-shirt, and who takes Dean home with him to his apartment for what they both think is one night of mindless, drunken sex. But Dean soon learns that Cas is really Justice Castiel Novak, a reluctant judge who has been assigned to hear the same trial that Dean’s career is depending on. Both knowing that they could ruin their entire professional lives by carrying on a relationship, they continue to see each other in secret, which mostly involves Dean winding up in Cas’ bed. They learn, though, they have a lot more in common than they thought, both following in the footsteps of what their fathers wanted, and both scarred by tragic events in their pasts.
(The title comes from the legal term “Ex parte” which refers to improper contact between a judge and one party in a lawsuit).
