Work Text:
Cole and Kai have learned many things about Jay over their years together. They’ve learned that his favorite ice cream is chocolate chip cookie dough and that he used to wear braces when he was younger. They’ve also learned that when Jay lived in the junkyard, he’d take in stray animals. Another thing they learned only recently, is that sometimes, if he is emotional enough, he can cause thunderstor-
Bang .
Kai’s head shot up as his eyes flung open. Fuck , a thunderstorm . Cole groaned in his sleep, pulling the other’s tense body closer. Kai planted a sleepy kiss on the ravenette’s cheek, which he was half sure he missed but was too tired to care. He turned to hug Jay, but was met with an open space.
“Baby?” He grumbled, waving his hand around in the general direction.
“Wha?” Cole answered from beside him, obviously woken from his slumber.
Kai smiled a little, “Not you, boulder-brain. Where’s Jay?”
Cole was silent for a moment, rubbing his thumb in a circle on Kai’s stomach absentmindedly. “Mmm, dunno. Probably takin’ a shit or eating…”
The brunette hummed in acknowledgement, letting his head fall back down on the pillow.
Kai waited five minutes. Then he got bored and began to play with Cole’s fingers. Another five minutes passed by and worry started to creep in on him. The fire master turned a little, tapping the other’s shoulder. Cole’s face scrunched, a look of adoration on Kai’s face as he did so. “Hey, I’m gonna go look for Jay.”
Cole’s eyes looked at him, sluggishly nodding before closing his eyes and letting go of the other. Kai pulled up the other's arm, kissing his knuckle before placing it gently on the bed.
The brunette wandered around, checking the bathroom and the kitchen. The thunder that was once playing softly in the background grew louder. “Jay?” Kai whisper-yelled into the hallway, rubbing away the sleep in his eyes(which wasn’t much).
As he slowly approached the workshop, he heard metal against metal. Kai immediately sped up, striding over to get closer. He could hear the faint sound sobs from the opposite side of the door.
He nearly threw all manners out the window at the very thought that Jay was crying and almost forgot to knock. When he did, it was as if time stopped. Silence seemed to flood the bounty. Jay’s cries stopped, Jay’s tinkering froze, the storm fell silent.
Kai’s lips were pulled into a frown, realization washing over him.
“Hey, Jay? It’s Kai…” He said softly, hoping it was loud enough to hear.
There was some shuffling on Jay’s end before footsteps came to the door. It opened slowly, revealing the puffy, red-eyed brunette. If possible, he’s frown grew.
Kai nudged the door open wider, letting his arms out for the other. It wasn’t until the door was fully opened that Kai took in the image of the other. Jay’s hair was messier than usual– almost as if hands had been running through it constantly, freckles lost in the redness of his tear-stained cheeks. Jay also seemed to be wearing Cole’s sweater and Kai’s sweatpants. The sight broke his heart.
Jay stumbled into the other’s arms, sniffling and probably on the brink of tears once again. “Up, please,” Kai whispered softly, adjusting a hand under the other’s thigh.
The lightning master wrapped his legs around the other, shoving his face deeper into Kai’s neck. “Hey, Baby, you’re okay…” He said quietly, holding the other and carrying him back inside the workshop. “Shhh, you’re safe, you’re loved.”
Kai kicked the door closed lightly, eyes searching for an empty space.
Fun fact, Jay was an organized-chaos type of person. This fact led to there being barely anywhere to rest. Kai somehow spotted a space on the floor that wasn’t filled with spare parts and decided that would do the job. So he walked over, leaned against the wall, and slid down so they were both on the floor. Jay shuffled around, curling into a ball against the other’s chest.
“Hey, what's wrong?” Kai whispered softly, threading his fingers through the other’s hair.
Jay leaned into his touch, reveling in it as much as he could. “I, it’s nothing… it really is silly…”
Kai massaged his scalp, “It’s not silly, nor is it nothing if it has you thunder-crying, babe.”
“Was I really crying that hard?” Jay winced.
“Mhm.”
They laid together, limbs tangled together. Sometimes, Jay would sniffle or let out a choked sob. In return, Kai would rub his back soothingly or whisper comforting words until Jay’s breathing calmed.
Time passed, they didn’t know long but they assumed it was 10-20 minutes until one of them spoke again, and surprisingly, it was Jay. “It was a nightmare… you- you and Cole, you guys…you left me. And I was trapped in an attic, bleeding out. It…” He cut himself off as tears began to fall once again.
Kai hushed him, kissing his forehead and holding him closer. Salty water streamed down his cheeks as he let out shaky breaths. Jay was trembling in the other's arms, lips quivering. “You don’t have to explain it to me, baby. I love you. Cole loves you. We’d never leave you.
“You got that?” He finished, and Jay nodded.
Kai pushed Jay off lightly, sitting up a little straighter. “Wanna see a trick?” He whispered with a cheery tone.
Jay raised a brow, “Uh, sure?”
The fire master smiled, moving both hands in front of him above Jay’s lap. He wiggled his fingers before straightening them out. Kai began to channel all the heat into his fingers and right before they started glowing, he popped his knuckles. It gave off a bright red glow that lit up their corner.
“See! Like a glow-stick!” Kai said with excitement, letting his fingers dance in the air.
Jay smiled. His tears had stopped and he grabbed the other’s bright fingers. Jay pushed the hands together, kissing every knuckle before putting them on his waist and snuggling back into Kai’s chest. “When I learn how to do that, we can play finger light-sabers,” he whispered, internally trying to direct his energy into the hand that was rubbing the other’s chest.
Kai barked out a laugh, “You’re fucking adorable, Sparky.”
Jay grumbled, zapping the other with his finger tip. The other let out a yelp, flinching at the touch. “I’m gonna tell Cole you did that-”
“You’re gonna tell me what?” Both brunette’s heads spun towards the door, spotting Cole leaning against the frame. The three smiled in unison, the pair getting up and walking over to the other. “I’m gonna assume, you’re okay now, and if you aren’t we can go cuddle in the bedroom.”
Jay nodded, “Well, Kai made sure that I’m better now. But, I’d love for some cuddles!”
Cole nodded, getting closer to the two. He squatted, grabbing the pair by the legs and stood, forcing them to lay on his shoulders. The pair squealed, something Kai will deny doing later. “Don’t start screaming or else you’ll wake everyone,” Cole said while making his way out.
The raven hauled his lovers into their bedroom and dropped them on the bed.
That night, well, morning because it was now 4am, the trio went to bed, sleeping soundly in each other's space. The storm was forgotten along with whatever terrible dream Jay had.
