Sub(un)conscious

Summary:

SPOILERS FOR HOLLOW MIND. It has been roughly two and a half hours since the episode premiered, so big spoilers, especially because it's about an event that happens off screen.

How Hunter got out of Belos' subconscious and the thoughts that provoked him back.

Work Text:

"Just..."

Hunter felt himself slipping into the subconscious of Belos' mind. He watched as Luz watched with an utterly horrified expression on her face as her hand slipped. He fell through the ashen ground, slipping into a utter void.

He had read about this place before in his books. Everyone's subconscious, when accessed like this, would be filled with every stray passing thought they had, breaking whatever slipped down into new components for new thoughts. He would cease to be if he didn't get out immediately. He swam in the murky darkness of the abyss. He was surprised how empty it was- he reasoned it was because Belos was focusing his mind inwards, to talk with Luz and Hunter.

There was a chance then. Even if he was dragged into the subconscious, the fact it was empty because Belos was performing at the forefront in his own mind meant there was nothing to break Hunter down. He stared up at the void, a shimmer of a surface above. Belos had nothing going on in his mind, he could break back into the mind.

He took a deep breath. He wasn't sure there was much left of him for after this, even if he had managed to get out of Belos' mind after all this. He wouldn't be able to go back and the thought scared him. He was good as dead. Yet, beyond the trembling fear kicking inside of him, he felt like he had no choice but to give himself one more chance that the other Golden Guards didn't get.

He grabbed a glyph from Luz's jacket, the plant glyph. He pressed his palm against the surface of the paper, creating a wall of vines. It ascended him upwards, but he realized there was a problem. He didn't have anything to shatter it. Quickly thinking, he tapped down on ice glyphs, grabbing a bunch of glyphs in his hands, desperate to break out as soon as he possibly could.

He rose from the upper ceiling, watching as the ice spines on the top of the hedge spliced through the shining ceiling, cracking through the void of the subconscious. He rode onto the vines, huffing as a bunch of glyphs fell out of the jacket, although at this point he was just happy to be alive for a little longer. Luz could get him out of this- she had to.
