Kate tossed the basketball forward, trying to get it in the net. But the basketball just bounced off the backboard and came rolling back towards her. She picked it up and put it back, deciding that the game wasn’t for her.
She was at an amusement park with her friends, but they had ditched her as soon as they’d gotten in. So now Kate was by herself, throwing balls at unwinnable games.
She moved on from the basketball game, walking down the row of stands. Her senses were instantly assaulted by a cacophony of sound. The joyful shouting of little kids, having the time of their lives on rides. The yelling of vendors, imploring her to try the “greatest fried twinkies in the world” or the funnel cake that, according to the man at the stand, was the “best she would ever eat”.
She ignored the vendors and made a beeline for a nearby tent, a game where you threw darts at balloons to win a giant purple dragon. Kate’s favorite color was purple, so the large plush beast instantly caught her eye. Kate stepped up to the counter and accepted the three darts, given to her by a bored looking teen.
She eyed a smaller balloon, situated at the edge of the group of balloons. She carefully aimed her dart, and was about to throw, when a blond girl came up beside her.
The girl had her long blond hair in a thick braid, and she was wearing a flattering dark green t-shirt. She received her darts from the girl behind the counter and smiled at Kate.
“Hello, I’m Yelena,” the girl said in a thick Russian accent. Kate smiled at her and held out her hand to shake. “I’m Kate,” she said.
Yelena shook her hand, and then turned her attention to the wall of balloons before them. “I bet I can get more balloons popped than you,” said Kate.
Yelena looked at her and grinned. “It’s on.”
Kate threw her first dart, managing to pop the balloon she was aiming for as well as another balloon as the dart hit the wall. Kate smiled and looked at Yelena smugly. “Beat that on your first try,” she said.
Yelena raised an eyebrow and aimed carefully. She threw her dart, and it flew through the air, hitting not one, not two, but three balloons, grouped together tightly. Kate’s mouth dropped as she realized she had some serious competition.
Yelena turned to Kate, a triumphant grin on her face. “Ta-da,” she said. Kate grinned and threw her next dart.
