His chest feels fit to burst. The roll of the waves and tug of the currents begs for Chip to stay down here, to rest, to just breathe in, to let it be over. For the ocean to consume him and become him until he becomes another water-logged corpse, a pound of flesh for the ocean’s great, unending hunger.
Chip fights that urge with all he has. His head breaches the waves, clear out into open air, and he greedily sucks in oxygen like it’s the first time he’s ever breathed. Gillion is limp and heavy in his arms, the amour and his sheathed sword tugging down, down, down.

Gill fights a sea monster and nearly dies. Chip can't bear to lose him, among other things.
