Work Text:

“Dean, where are you going?” Castiel asked as his husband began to drift away from him.

The two of them were at the movies to see Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness . Dean had bought the tickets ages ago in case they sold out. Castiel had never seen any superhero films before he had met Dean which had led to many, many movie nights to catch up on all of Dean’s favourite superhero movies, including all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It had become a tradition for them to go and see the new Marvel films at the cinema.

Currently, they were standing in line to get popcorn and drinks. Dean also had a shopping bag stuffed full of sweets that he had bought from the supermarket the day before in case he ‘ran out of popcorn and was still hungry.’

Dean was wearing a WandaVision t-shirt that proclaimed ‘We are an unusual couple’ in big letters which Castiel had gotten him for his birthday. Castiel had opted to wear his normal sweater, tie and slacks combo, although Dean had managed to bully him into wearing a pin with the Avengers logo on it.

“They’ve got a claw machine over there, Cass!” Dean said. “I’m just gonna try my luck, ‘kay?”

Castiel sighed. “Fine.”

Dean leaned forward to place a chaste kiss on his witch’s cheek.

“You’re the best! Love you, hon!” Dean sped off towards the arcade machines, leaving Castiel alone in the line.

Dean had, somewhat predictably, devolved into swearing and shaking the machine when he was sure that no one who worked for the cinema was looking when Castiel approached him, balancing two buckets of popcorn and two drinks in his arms.

“A little help here, Dean?” Castiel said, giving his husband a glare when he failed to turn away from the claw machine.

“Just a sec,” Dean said, inserting another coin into the machine.

Dean .”

“I’ve almost got it!” Dean bit his lip, his eyes narrowed in intense concentration. The claw dipped down, closing around a plushie of Wanda Maximoff. Dean’s knuckles whitened as he gripped the edge of the machine. “C’mon, c’mon. Almost…” The claw rose again, the plushie falling out of its grip. “No! Oh, for-”

“Dean, there are children!” Castiel hissed.

“These things are stupid! They’re frickin’ rigged!” Dean ranted, glaring at the machine like he had caught it flirting with his husband.

“Then why are you playing it?” Castiel asked his familiar with a long-suffering sigh.

“‘Cause…” Dean pointed at the plushie weakly. “It’s Wanda, you know. And you like her, so I thought I’d win it for you. A witch for my witch, I guess.”

Castiel really didn’t want to smile but, as his husband began blushing, he couldn’t help but grin.

“That’s very sweet of you, Dean,” Castiel said. He leaned forward to kiss his husband’s cheek, making Dean blush even more.

“Okay, okay, you don’t have to rub it in,” he muttered before levelling a finger at Castiel. “Don’t tell Sam, he’ll just make fun of me.”

“You’re secret’s safe with me,” Castiel said. “Next time I see your brother, I’ll just tell him that you refused to help me with the food and wasted all of our money on this pointless endeavour.”

Dean glanced back at the machine before reaching out towards the popcorn.

“Fine,” he said. “Come on, we better go. The movie’ll be starting soon.”

Castiel stepped back, pulling the buckets of popcorn and drinks out of Dean’s reach.

“Why don’t you try one more time, Dean?” he said, a gentler tone in his voice.

Dean didn’t have to be told twice. He fumbled around in his pockets until he found another spare coin and inserted it into the machine. The claw descended again and, this time, Castiel muttered a spell under his breath, his words masked by the sounds of people talking and the music from the claw machine. Castiel made sure to close his eyes to hide the way that they glowed blue for a few seconds. This time, the claw gripped the Wanda plushie and didn’t drop it. Dean grabbed it triumphantly after it fell into the prize area.

“Hah! I got it! Take that, you stupid machine!”

“Dean,” Castiel said, giving the familiar a stern glare.

“Coming, dear,” Dean said, grinning.

He took one of the drinks and one of the buckets of popcorn before handing his husband the Wanda Maximoff plushie. Castiel balanced it on top of his box of popcorn.

“You know, you’re kinda like Wanda sometimes,” Dean said with a sly smile. “You can be really scary. You’re super hot. And-”

“I’m a witch?” Castiel said, raising his eyebrows.

“Well, yeah,” Dean said with a shrug. “If you wanna state the obvious.”

“So, if I’m ‘Wanda’,” Castiel said. “Does that make you Vision?”

“Hell yes,” Dean said. “Except I’m not gonna die tragically multiple times.”

“Good,” Castiel said. “Believe it or not, I’m pretty attached to you.”

Bonded , you could say,” Dean replied with a cheeky grin.

Castiel rolled his eyes, chuckling quietly. They fell silent as they entered the cinema. Most people were already seated, and Castiel and Dean’s seats were in the middle of the row, so they had to climb across some people to get there. Advertisements were playing on the screen as they sat down.

Dean stretched his arm across the seat and around Castiel’s shoulders. The witch let his head fall onto Dean’s shoulder as the lights dimmed.

Castiel placed the plushie on their bedside table when he and Dean got home. When he went out to the living room again, his husband was curled up on the couch, munching on leftover popcorn and sweets. He looked up, grinning when Castiel sat down on the couch beside him, and seamlessly transformed into his cat form. He climbed across Castiel’s lap, purring, and began licking at his hands, probably for any butter or salt remaining from the popcorn.

“Do you still want to rewatch the first Doctor Strange?” Castiel asked.

“Mrow,” Dean replied, nudging Castiel’s arm with his nose.

“Okay.” Castiel ran one hand through Dean’s fur while the other grabbed the remote from the arm of the couch. “Love you.”

Dean purred in answer, curling against Castiel happily.
