Chapter 1: A Shocking Announcement
Chapter Text
It was a beautiful, summer afternoon in the merchant city of Magnolia when Makarov Dreyar summoned all members of the Fairy Tail guild to the hall for an urgent announcement. Everyone was conversing amongst themselves as they made their way over trying to figure out what the meaning of the meeting could be. There were some who speculated it could have something to do with the recent increase in requests that were coming in due to the results of the Grand Magic Games. Others assumed the old man was going to apologize to the members of Fairy Tail's Team A for what they were forced to endure at the hands of Team B only a few weeks ago.
Once everyone had been gathered, the doors of the guildhall closed and the quiet conversations ceased momentarily before picking up again in more urgent tones. Lucy had managed to find Gray, Erza, and Happy in the crowd and visibly sighed in relief. Erza caught a glimpse of the blonde in her peripheral and turned to greet her.
“Ah, Lucy! I was wondering where you were. Is Natsu with you?”
“Isn't he already here? Happy...?”
“No, he ditched me this morning. I thought he was going to raid your place for some breakfast...I haven't seen him all day.”
“That's really weird. He never came over...”
“It is very strange for him to keep away from your apartment, Lucy.” Erza stated thoughtfully. “Gray, did you see him at any point today?”
“No,” he said after a few moments of contemplation, “I slept in today and by the time I'd gotten around, Juvia was there to make sure I wasn't sick...or dead or somethin' dramatic. Been with her most of the day actually.”
“So...none of us have seen him since yesterday, besides Happy...I'm a little worried, you guys. And what about Wendy and Carla? Have we seen them yet?” Lucy was now looking around more intently trying to spot their three missing teammates.
“Aye, I'm worried too. I haven't seen Wendy or Carla today either...”
“We musn't think the worst.” Erza said firmly. “Master called the entire guild here, so they'll have to show up.”
The group exchanged looks of concern before resorting to looking around the multitude of guild members surrounding them for any sight of the two Dragon Slayers and the female Exceed. Lucy scanned each face within her range until she settled on a small girl with light blue hair holding a black cat in her arms. She excused herself just as Carla joined the other members of Team Natsu without being accompanied by her young, cheerful companion.
“Hey Levy! Hey Lily!”
“Good afternoon, Lucy.”
“Hey LuLu! This is pretty hectic, right?”
“You're telling me...hey, you guys haven't seen Natsu or Wendy today have you?”
“No, I'm sorry Lu...I was doing some research at the library earlier, so I haven't seen anyone really. Lily, didn't you mention that Gajeel's been gone all day too?”
“Yes, actually. He left an oddly vague note for me this morning saying he'd see me here later.”
“Wait, so all of the Dragon Slayers have been M.I.A. today?!” Lucy basically yelled in shock.
“It would seem so.” Pantherlily said with the slightest hint of concern in his voice.
“Well, wait let's not get ahead of ourselves.” Levy said in what she hoped was a convincingly calm tone. “What about Laxus? I know I saw Freed and Evergreen here just a minute ago...there!”
Levy had turned around and was pointing to where the members of the Thunder Legion were standing just ten feet away. Pantherlily had removed himself from the Script Mage's grasp and was floating above the heads of the Strauss siblings to get a look at where Laxus' bodyguards were located. Lucy was leaning slightly to the left in order to look around Elfman's broad shoulders to see the three wizards in question.
“He...he isn't there with them, Levy...” Lucy said with wide eyes.
“Okay...this is getting really weird.”
“It is out of character for the Dragon Slayers to keep away from their respective teams.” Lily added as he lowered back into Levy's petite hands.
“You guys don't think that they could be in danger, right?”
“No, Lu. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that they're all not here yet...I hope...”
“I'm sure everything is fine, Levy.” Lily soothed. “Let's not get too wound up until we hear from the Master. Speaking of which...”
Pantherlily motioned to the second story balcony where the guild's Master was now standing. All of the hushed theories were silenced as more bodies began to move behind the banister that the small man was currently occupying. Lucy caught sight of Natsu making his way down the stairs to their level with Gajeel, Wendy, and Laxus in tow. She let out a sigh of relief before quietly saying goodbye to her blue-haired friend and making her way back over to her team.
Natsu joined his friends and was immediately embraced by his blue Exceed. Wendy was also approached by her own cat companion who scolded her silently for sneaking away from her that morning. Erza merely gave him and Wendy a small nod before directing her attention to Master Makarov, who was scanning over the crowd with a mischievous glint in his eye. Gray whispered that the Fire Dragon Slayer should be more considerate before just taking off to which the pink-haired boy smiled widely and offered a quiet apology in response before he too looked back up the stairs.
Gajeel had spotted Levy and Pantherlily as soon as he'd looked down into the mass of people. He made his way over to them, ignoring the looks and comments of confusion as he passed by. Lily glanced up at him from his position in Levy's arms with a raised eyebrow. The Iron Dragon Slayer just smirked in response and watched the Guild Master who had just cleared his throat, cutting off all conversation.
“Good afternoon everyone. I'm sure you're all eager to find out why I've summoned you here, so I'll just get right to it. Some of you may be aware that our annual Twenty-Four Hour Endurance Road Race date is drawing near.”
Several people groaned in response to this as others seemed to be finding it difficult to breathe. A few were questioning if this would even be appropriate given everything that had happened both after the S-Class exams and the Grand Magic Games. There were even a couple of individuals who exclaimed loudly that they'd not had to worry about this for seven years, but all discussion was silenced when Makarov began emitting a menacing aura.
“ENOUGH! The event will be commencing tomorrow morning at eight o'clock! Now, unlike previous years this will not be a race. Instead, you will be participating in a twenty-four hour game of hide and seek.”
More protests were voiced at this declaration; the loudest coming from Jet of Team Shadow Gear who had won nearly every race before the Tenrou incident.
“WOULD YOU ALL SHUT UP SO I CAN CONTINUE?!” The hall fell silent once again and Makarov continued. “As I just said, this game will be different. All members will have to hide for a full day within the city gates of Magnolia. If you are NOT found in these twenty-four hours, then you are exempt from the punishment. This year, I am going to tell you what that punishment will be.”
If possible, the quietness was now even more tangible and riddled with suspense.
“Before I do that, however, I need to introduce the individuals who will be hunting you brats down. Come forward please.”
Every head in the area was searching for the mystery seekers. Lucy noticed movement to her left and turned to see Natsu walking toward the bar. He jumped to stand on top of it and flashed a toothy grin in her direction. She could feel her eyes bugging out as she realized what was going on. Wendy had climbed up to stand near him while wearing an innocent smile that would make Mirajane proud.
“Oh, you have to be kidding me...”
Laxus joined the other two Dragon Slayers and stood with his arms crossed. The members of the Thunder Legion were all standing with their mouths wide open and the hall was filled with scattered chatter again. Levy and Lily both turned to face Gajeel who grinned evilly at them before making his way to the bar as well.
The Fairy Tail wizards all went silent again.
“Yes, that's right everyone. It will be the Dragon Slayer's job to find as many of you as they can within the day. Once they do, they will have to mark you with a magic stamp that can only be removed by me. SO DON'T TRY TO CHEAT AND WASH IT OFF! Whoever is found and marked will be part of the punishment, which is working at Yajima's restaurant during the upcoming festival day.”
There was an audible sigh of relief from the gathered mages, but Makarov and the seekers still wore their sickening smiles.
“During that shift at 8 Island, the punished will have to wear the uniform that has been designed by whoever catches them. They've been working with Reedus all morning on the designs...Wendy would you like to start?”
“Yes sir!” She said brightly. “The uniform I've made is a tribute to some friends that I met on a job...tada!”
From behind the bar she pulled a canvas with a print of a tight, full body suit that appeared to be made of rubber. There were also a pair of matching cat ears sketched with it. Many members of the guild had mouths agape and the color drained from their faces, but Wendy just smiled even sweeter.
“A very nice choice, indeed. Natsu, you're up next.”
Oh no...Lucy thought in fear.
“Heheh! Alright, get a load of...THIS!”
On his canvas was an illustration of a very beautiful, but very impractical princess gown. He made eye contact with Gray as he unveiled it and the Ice Make wizard nearly passed out from the realization that Natsu would be gunning for him tomorrow. Before the Master could call the next Slayer, Natsu directed his gaze onto Lucy and gave an uncharacteristic smirk. She could feel her face heat up from it.
What the heck was that look?!
“Laxus.”
“Yeah, yeah. Here's mine. Thunder Legion you better be prepared.”
The image he unveiled caused some giggling, but the three wizards he'd just called out were close to running away. It was a maid costume, which Evergreen wouldn't have minded if it weren't paired with a gaudy, golden, glittering hairbow and an apron with “Laxus' Bitch” printed on it. She was really going to have to avoid him no matter who she had to throw his way.
Bickslow's usual chipper demeanor was replaced by mortification upon seeing the frilly, branding maid costume he'd be forced to wear if Laxus managed to find him. He stole a glance at his green-haired friend out of the corner of his eye to see that his generally calm features were now twisted into concentration. It would appear as though Freed was already coming up with a strategy to avoid being captured.
How the hell are ya not freakin' out right now man...
Levy and Lily had watched as each Dragon Slayer unveiled their creations with a look of terror evident on their faces and were now ready to run from the hall as it was now Gajeel's turn to torment them. During Laxus' spotlight, he'd pulled his canvas up from behind the bar, which was covered with a tarp, and locked eyes with the blue-haired girl. Her face was tinted pink while she waited for the Master to announce that it was his turn. Lily had resorted to crossing his arms over his chest and staring at his teasing friend with a straight face.
He had noticed lately that Gajeel had been much more direct in his flirting with Levy, and so him staring down the poor girl with that look on his face was nothing unexpected. What was odd was that he hadn't informed the Exceed of this event that would have him chasing the Script Mage around, with an actual reason to do so, for a full day. Pantherlily would have to have a talk with the Iron Dragon Slayer before this event took place tomorrow.
“And Gajeel. What is it you have in store for the punished?”
His smirk was the most menacing that Levy had ever seen as he kept eye contact with her and threw off the fabric covering his concept. Her big eyes grew even larger and her blush was now crimson as she began to sense several eyes on her. Gajeel's picture was of a leotard with a high neck. There was a tiny skirt that left the front open and sheer material that acted as sleeves. Levy also couldn't help but notice that he'd noted it to have an open back and that the netted material accented the outfit to appear as a tube top and high waisted bottom. The piece looked somewhat jazzy as she studied it and then she saw another note questioning whether or not it should include bunny ears.
No...no no no no...he can't be serious. Haven't I suffered enough already?!
She finally pulled her eyes away from the revealing design and returned them to the arrogant man who'd created it. He'd been watching her as she took it all in and was very obviously pleased with her reaction. She gulped audibly, noticing just how dry her mouth had become, and turned to leave the hall. Lily wiggled free of her grip again, transformed to his battle form, and placed his hand on Levy's shoulder.
“We must not show him fear, Levy. It'll only swell his head more. You shouldn't worry anyway, I'll ensure he doesn't find us.”
The petite girl met the Exceed's gaze and let a small, unsure smile grace her features before nodding to him and looking back over at the pierced Dragon Slayer. Gajeel's smirk was now stretched into a gut-wrenching grin as if in response to Pantherlily's comment. Of course, with his enhanced senses he did hear it.
“I think he heard you, Lily...”
“Nevertheless, I stand by what I said.”
With all of the uniforms being shown, Master Makarov addressed the Fairy Tail guild once again.
“Some very interesting choices. I have one more little twist for you all. I'm allowing the seekers to choose one partner each that will also be safe from punishment. These individuals will help them in finding and marking as many people as possible. Choose wisely, you four, because whoever stamps the most members will win an additional prize on top of being served by the punished after hours at 8 Island. Wendy, who have you chosen?”
Carla smiled to herself in relief at hearing this information, but that smile was soon replaced with a look of pure shock.
“I've chosen Mystogan!”
Erza's knees went weak at those words and there was a spark of confused conversation once again, but this was silenced by the sudden appearance of the mentioned man on the landing by Makarov. His dark green eyes bore into her own brown ones, and she could tell that he was smiling under that mask. She took in a rather ragged breath and struggled to keep her face neutral as she kept his taunting gaze.
“And you, Natsu?”
Happy was fully prepared to join his Slayer pal at the bar, in fact he'd begun hovering in the air. It was a devastating shock when Natsu announced that his partner would actually be...
“GILDARTS! Get up here old man!”
There was no holding back at this revelation. The entire guildhall erupted into a fit of hysterics and many mages were actively trying to steady their breathing when the S-Class mage walked through the panicking crowd and sat in a stool at the bar. He laughed loudly over the chaos that his name had caused and said something to Natsu that was lost in the sound.
“ALRIGHT QUIET DOWN! Laxus, who will be your partner?”
“Well, it was gonna be Erza, but seein' as how Je-Mystogan came all this way to help Wendy...I'm gonna go with Bickslow.”
“OH THANK GOD!” The Thunder Legion wizard shouted in clear respite.
“THANK GOD!”
“PRAISE THE LORD!”
“YEAH, HALLELUJAH!”
The Seith mage and his soul totems pushed through the gathered guild members and took a seat next to Guildarts. He looked back out at his teammates who were both now frozen in distress; he didn't envy that one bit. With a calming breath, he relaxed and his souls did the same.
“And lastly, Gajeel. Who have you chosen to be your partner?”
Pantherlily knew better than to hope that his friend would choose him at this point, so he kept his cool when the name 'Freed' left his lips. Levy, on the other hand, went rigid. She was hoping to use some runes to aid her in evading capture, but now there was no way that would happen with Freed helping Gajeel. She looked up at Lily with her worries clearly etched on her face and he just smiled at her in the most reassuring way that he could at the present time. This game was going to be ridiculously chaotic, it would seem.

Chapter Text
Makarov dismissed the Fairy Tail members to prepare for the event that would be taking place the following morning and returned to his office. There was a large chunk of people who decided to go and gather supplies that they would be needing to survive the next twenty-four hours, while some took to relaxing a bit at the guildhall with a stronger than usual drink. Currently, Cana was standing before her father, who remained sitting in his seat at the bar, and was yelling at him for getting involved in this while also declaring that she would not be getting caught by the likes of him.
Natsu had rejoined his team, minus Gray who had left with Juvia immediately after the Master had allowed them to leave, and was in the process of consoling a very heartbroken Happy. Erza excused herself from the scene in a whisper and rushed from the guildhall with her face being slightly flushed. From his place on the upper balcony, Jellal watched her exit and then stealthily made his way out to follow her. Lucy was still in a state of shock as she stood there watching Natsu hug Happy while apologizing.
“I'm sorry, pal. With Guildarts bein' in town right now I figured it'd be funny to see everyone's face when I chose him.”
“B-but N-Natsu-u! N-now I h-have to hi-ide t-t-too!” Happy said in sobs.
“Yeah, but think about it this way. You'll have Lucy there with ya, right? And Carla will need some help hidin' from Wendy too. It'll be your job to keep 'em both safe.”
“A-aye...but...w-won't you be t-trying to get Lucy?”
“Heh. Yeah, so you'll have to really make me proud and keep her away from me. Think ya can do it?”
“I'll d-do my best!”
“That's the spirit! Besides, the first person I'm gettin' is Gray. Can't pass up the chance to actually make him look like an Ice Princess. Now, why don't ya go and get some fish from Mira while I talk to Luce?”
The blue Exceed wiped his face and sniffled before slightly smiling and flying over to where Mirajane was behind the bar.
“You're awfully quiet, Luce. Ya okay?”
“Hm? Oh, well yeah...I'm alright. It's just a lot of information to take in all at once...”
“Ya sure you're not just freakin' out cause I'm gonna find ya?”
Lucy narrowed her eyes slightly at the lovable, innocent smile that graced his mouth after he said it. “I am not freaking out and you aren't going to find me!”
“Oh, I'll definitely find ya, Luce. I could pick up your smell anywhere, and plus...” He leaned in with his hand by his mouth as if he were telling her a secret and then whispered: “I know you're gonna look good dressed as a princess.”
The Celestial Spirit mage's eyes widened at that and then she turned and all but ran out of the hall toward home with her face glowing in chagrin. Happy flew after her and made a pouty face at his best friend. Natsu just chuckled and headed to the upper level above the bar to await the other Slayers.
Levy had watched Lucy leave and begged Pantherlily to let her go too, but the Exceed advised that it would be best for them to face Gajeel before the morning. She stood slightly behind the tall cat as the Dragon Slayer sauntered over to them with a smug look gracing his face. He stopped when he was toe to toe with his feline friend.
“Still feelin' confident, cat?”
“Very much so. Levy and I should have no problem evading you when you like to make such a spectacle. We'll hear you coming from miles away.”
“Gihee. 'S that so?”
“It is.”
The two were nearly resting their foreheads against the other's and Levy could feel her heart beat wildly in her chest as she thought about how much louder the beating would be tomorrow. She couldn't even imagine not being caught if it was going to drum so hard because the Dragon Slayers could definitely hear her from miles away. She was still deep in her own thoughts when a hand rested on her shoulder and made her jump in surprise.
“AH!”
“Gihee. At least the Shorty seems to get it. Gonna be hard for ya to hide from me when I can hear your little heartbeat from across town.”
She gasped. What can he read minds now?! “Luckily for me,” She countered after clearing her throat, “I have an entire night to study ways to prevent that then.” She had squared her shoulders and locked eyes with Gajeel.
He smirked down at her before leaning down to whisper in her ear. “With that brain and temper of yers, I expect this to be a fun time. I'm comin' at ya with everything I got, so ya better do the same, Shrimp.”
Levy glared up at the Iron Dragon Slayer with a face filled with heat for a few seconds before she straightened up and looked over at Lily.
“I'll be at my apartment making a list of things we'll need for tomorrow, Lily. Meet me there?”
“Of course. I won't be far behind you.”
She nodded at him and then shot one more glare at Gajeel before confidently striding out of the guildhall. The pair watched her until she was out of sight and then they were back to staring each other down.
“Is there a reason you didn't inform me about this sooner?” Lily asked simply.
“I was gonna do more than tell ya; I was gonna have ya be my partner, but then I thought about the Shrimp only havin' the idiots out there with her. Even then, I thought this could be a good trainin' opportunity for em, but...ya just had to open yer mouth.”
“Are you referring to when I comforted Levy when every eye in the guild was on her?” He shook his head. “Honestly, your games have been getting more and more bold lately, but this seems somehow different.”
Gajeel shrugged. “Maybe it is.”
Pantherlily narrowed his eyes at his guarded friend. “What's changed your view on this?”
“Tch. On what?” He asked defiantly.
“You know what. Do you really want me to say it out loud?”
The pierced Slayer sighed. “I dunno. I'm just done keepin' 'er at arms length is all. Not like I was doin' the best job anyway.”
“True enough.” A comfortable silence fell over them and the Exceed smiled. “Well, I'm glad that you're finally making your move. Even if it does seem ridiculous to strive to embarrass the poor girl you've been pining for since I've met you.”
“Ain't my fault she gets riled up so easy.” He said with a smirk.
“You certainly don't help matters...now, I have to go and strategize. I'll see you out there.”
“Damn right ya will.”
Lily chuckled. “Just know that even with this information and the fact that I've been wanting you to get over yourself and confess to this girl, I will be doing everything in my power to keep her from being caught.”
“Gihee. Good luck, Lil. Yer gonna need it.”
Pantherlily smirked as he left the guildhall to meet up with the small Bookworm he would be hiding alongside tomorrow. He figured Jet and Droy were likely to already be at her Fairy Hills apartment when he arrived and chuckled. Should Gajeel have his way, those two were going to need some serious consoling when this game was over.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wendy made her way up the wooden stairs she'd walked down only a little while ago and found that she was the last one to arrive, much to her embarrassment. Already seated at the table in the farthest corner from the staircase were the three other Fairy Tail Dragon Slayers, their respective teammates for the Punishment Game, and her own as well. She let out a squeaking noise and walked closer to the group.
“I'm so sorry I'm late! Carla wasn't very happy that I didn't choose her to be my partner...”
“That's alright, Wendy! Happy was pretty upset too.” Natsu said reassuringly.
“Not like we couldn't hear 'er yellin' at ya from all the way up here anyway.” Gajeel said in a less irritated tone than usual. “Just have a seat, Small Fry.”
She nodded and quickly took the open seat in between Gajeel and Jellal, who was still posing as the S-Class wizard Mystogan.
“So, what'd ya want, Gajeel?” Laxus asked with a yawn.
“To get everyone's word that if any of ya come across Levy tomorrow, you'll let 'er go. I'm gonna be the one to get 'er, understand?”
“I'm fairly certain that everyone understood your motive once you unveiled your uniform.” Freed stated without emotion.
“Yeah, well I just want ya all to swear here and now that ya won't mark 'er. That includes you, Freed.”
“You do realize I'm your partner, don't you?”
“Doesn't matter. The Shrimp's my prey tomorrow. Got it?”
“Very well.” Freed answered with an eye roll.
“What about the other Shadow Gear members?” Bickslow asked. “Or Pantherlily? Are we not allowed to go after them either?”
“Gihee. Do what ya want with 'em. Anyone other than Levy is fair game.”
The Seith Mage and his wooden totems chuckled. “That's what we like to hear, isn't it babies?”
“Mwahahaha!
“They're goin' down!”
“Time to hunt!”
“Yeah, yeah. We won't touch Levy, but we want Evergreen and Mira left to us then.” Laxus piped up from his seat across from the Iron Dragon Slayer.
“And Lisanna.” Bickslow added quickly.
“In case I haven't made it clear yet, I ain't goin' for anyone other than the Bookworm.”
“Freed? You gonna leave Ever to me and Bickslow?” Laxus questioned.
“I suppose I don't have a choice.”
“Actually,” Gajeel cut in, “seein' as how I don't care about this mystery prize that the Master has for whoever wins this thing, I thought maybe ya could just work with the other three teams. Levy's the only one I want in my outfit, and ya could help track down the fake Fairy Queen.”
Freed raised an eyebrow. “So you don't want my assistance at all? Then why choose me?”
“Cause my cat opened his damn mouth. That and the Shrimp's been studyin' runes lately, so I thought I'd be prepared.”
“So you do want my help then?” Freed was confused at this point, and getting a little agitated, but he couldn't deny that the prospect of hunting down the only member of their team actually being forced to hide wasn't exciting.
“I'll call ya if I need ya, but for the most part yer gonna be markin' people for these three.”
The green-haired man sighed. “Very well. So, we've established that Levy, Evergreen, Mirajane, and Lisanna are all off limits. Am I to assume that you two have stipulations as well to add to this growing list?” He questioned the other two Slayers.
“Well, when I asked Jellal to be my partner I promised him that we would get Erza together.” Wendy informed the group.
“Figures.” Laxus said with an exhale.
“Sorry to be so predictable.” Jellal said calmly. “I'll have to work on that before the morning.”
“Natsu? Are there any targets you don't want us to go after?” Freed interjected.
“Ah, man! I wanna fight Erza! Can't I at least help track her down?”
“Sorry, Natsu.” Wendy said sensitively.
“Fine, but I'll fight anyone that tries to get Gray or Lucy before I do!” The pink-haired boy declared proudly.
“Very well, and Gildarts? Should we assume Cana is off limits as well?”
The older man smiled broadly. “You got it! She's my little princess and Natsu's designed the perfect dress for her.”
“Are we all in agreement?” Freed asked while rubbing his temple.
“AYE!” The group yelled in unison.
Everyone except for Laxus and Bickslow made their leave to plan for the Punishment Game. It was bound to be a long night of strategy discussions and studying ways to best their guild members. They could practically feel the energy around them as everyone grouped up and made their way either to their homes or to get a jump start on hiding so as not to be woken up by a Dragon Slayer breaking down their door. This game was going to be more than a little fun.
Chapter 3: The Night Before

Lucy and Happy had only just gotten settled on her couch when there was a commotion outside her door. The blue Exceed feared that the Dragon Slayers were starting the game early, but Lucy reassured him that they were safe as she walked across the room. When she reached the door, she heard a group of very familiar voices having some sort of argument behind it. She sighed and opened the door to her apartment, which seemed to cut off the conversation immediately.
“Ah, Lucy.” Her scarlet-haired comrade greeted casually as she pushed herself through the door. “I apologize for the disturbance. There seemed to be some question as to how Gray knew this was your apartment.”
“Um-”
“MY BELOVED GRAY SHOULD NOT BE SPENDING HIS TIME IN THE HOME OF JUVIA'S LOVE RIVAL!” The Water Mage cried out dramatically.
“Geez, Juvia. Could ya calm down? We are on the same team, ya know?” Gray groaned while closing his eyes.
“Juvia should be Gray-sama's only teammate!”
“Oh Juvia.” A sweet, sympathetic voice chimed from behind the pair.
“Mira?” Lucy asked in confusion.
“Hi, Lucy! I hope you don't mind, but Erza and I were talking and we thought that it could be a good idea for us to hide in a group.”
“Oh, uh...well why don't you all just come in?”
Gray walked past the blonde with Juvia at his heel. The blue-haired girl shot Lucy a cold look as she past that caused her to sigh in response. Mirajane smiled kindly as she entered, and the Celestial Spirit Mage was even more puzzled to see the other two Strauss siblings there as well. She closed her door and turned to see that everyone was settling in on her bed, on her couch, and Elfman was sitting crossed-legged on the floor in between the two pieces of furniture.
“Okay, so tell me how we're all supposed to hide together for a full day without getting caught when we can all barely fit inside my apartment.”
Erza, who'd taken her usual spot on the sofa, spoke up. “In all honesty, we haven't come up with a solid strategy of avoiding being seen.”
“Wh...h...”
Lucy didn't even know what to say to that. Even if they were hiding from normal wizards, there was no way they could all stay in such a large group and not get found. The fact that Dragon Slayers, all of which were familiar with everyone in the room and had heightened senses, were going to be seeking them out meant that they didn't even have the best odds of not being found if they were alone.
“Then...why should we hide together...?” She asked after a minute of silence.
“Well,” Mira answered, “because ultimately this is going to come down to who can defeat the Dragon Slayers in a fight. Most of us in this room are most likely going to be targeted by one or more of them, and between us we have enough power and knowledge about each of them to exploit their weaknesses.”
“That's my big sis!” Elfman cheered.
“That does make sense...but what about their partners?” Lucy questioned worriedly. “Bickslow and Freed are tough enough, but now we have Jellal running around with Wendy, and I mean, Natsu has Gildarts! And from what I understand about him, he doesn't lose fights...what are we supposed to do about him?”
“He's going after Cana,” Lisanna said calmly. “so until she's been captured we shouldn't need to worry about him. As for Bickslow and Freed, Mir and I know them very well, and you helped Cana take them out during the S-Class trail. We can take them!”
Elfman was now holding back tears. “My sisters are so manly!”
“Right...” Lucy said, not completely convinced. “And Jellal?”
Erza closed her eyes and turned her head to try and hide the blush very visible on her face.
“I should be able to handle him if we cross paths.” She said after clearing her throat.
“So then it's settled!” Mira said cheerfully. “All we need to do is figure out a way for us to stay hidden.”
“I guess it's a good thing this doesn't start until the morning then.” Lucy said as she finally settled herself on the floor in front of her coffee table.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
“Oh there you are, Lily. Come on in!”
Levy held the door open wider than necessary for the small Exceed as he glided through. After closing and locking it, she turned around to see he'd found a spot on the hardwood floor next to the pile of books on various languages she'd been using yesterday. Jet was still standing with this back against the far wall of her modest living room while Droy was seated, rather snuggly, in her over-sized reading chair just to the right of him.
“I apologize for not coming sooner. Gajeel had some words to exchange.”
“Doesn't he always.” Jet muttered with an eye roll, but there was no real venom in his tone.
“Was he bragging about how fast he'll catch us?” Droy inquired with a smile.
“Something like that.” Lily chuckled.
Levy huffed. “Well, that's just going to make it so much better when he doesn't.”
She made her way to sit on the floor beside Pantherlily, as she really didn't have any other furniture besides the chair Droy was occupying and a small counter next to it that was piled with several more books.
“Now,” she began after getting situated, “Jet, Droy, and I were going over supplies we'll need for tomorrow. We need to make sure we're stocked up on everything so that we aren't caught out in the open buying things while the Dragon Slayers are out hunting, but we also need to be practical.”
The three males nodded in understanding.
“What do we have written down so far, Droy?” Levy questioned determinedly.
The mentioned Shadow Gear member held out the parchment he'd been writing on as if to get a better look at it. “Lacrima lights, first aid kit, communication lacrimas, thermal blankets, tent, hygiene kit, jerky, and nutrition bars.”
“Is there any particular reason that water isn't listed?” Pantherlily asked politely.
“Actually, yes.” Levy answered. “Carrying containers of water would be unnecessary weight as my magic can summon water for us.”
“I see.”
“That,” Jet added, “and if we were really in a bad spot, I could just run and grab some.”
“Understood.” Lily acknowledged with a nod. “I would like to suggest that we do bring at least one bottle each.”
“Why's that, Lily?” Levy asked with a tilt of her head.
“Well, we know that Gajeel will be gunning for us tomorrow. We've all trained with him, so by now he has a pretty good sense of how we smell, move, and even think. He knows the way all of your magic feels and how to counter it. If Levy were to use her magic, as suggested, then that would put us at risk of being found. If Jet runs across Magnolia trying to acquire water, then there's the chance that Gajeel will catch his scent and follow him back to us. What's more, I cannot transform tomorrow unless it is absolutely necessary as he could easily pick up on my own magic.” He studied the frowning faces around him and continued when they remained silent. “I feel it would really be best that we bring water to begin and that we each carry our share of the supplies. This will help with the weight and we will all be prepared even if we are forced apart.”
“Lily's right, guys. Droy, can you go and pick up the supplies before the shops close?”
“I'm on it!”
They watched as he gently pulled himself from the leather chair and walked out of the apartment as quickly as his large form would allow.
“What can I do to help, Levy?” The Speed Mage asked.
“If you wouldn't mind, I was hoping you could run around and find a decent spot where we can all stay tonight. I want to make sure we're able to get some sleep, but I also need to make sure Gajeel isn't going to kick the door down to my apartment first thing in the morning.”
“Psh. There's a chance he'll do that anyway, but I'll go scout for spaces. Be back soon!”
Levy sighed. “I really hope he doesn't break down my door...”
Pantherlily chuckled. “I truly wish I could tell you that he wouldn't do that, but you know him just about as well as I do.”
She smiled and then frowned slightly. “Do you think we can really beat him tomorrow?”
“I do. It won't be a simple task, but it is possible. You've witnessed some of my victories against him when we spar, and I've seen nothing but improvement from you and your team since we all began training together. We can do this.”
The bluenette nodded with a new wave of determination and confidence. “Yeah. We can do this.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
It was late in the evening when Cana woke up from her place atop the bar counter. She noticed that the hall was completely empty, which wasn't entirely surprising given the hour, but generally there would still be a few stragglers. She stretched, clumsily climbed down from the bar, and grabbed a jug of wine that she'd evidently left half full before passing out. After a deep drink from the container, she decided she would make her way to Fairy Hills and get ready for the Punishment Game.
“Someone could've woken a girl up. Sheesh.”
The cool, night air felt good against her heated skin and she sighed happily as she walked down the surprisingly busy streets. She saw many of her fellow guild members hustling from the shops; no doubt gathering supplies for the next day. She smiled and rolled her eyes at a particularly panicked Wakaba who was complaining about how he was too old for this kind of thing to an unimpressed Carla.
“Oh, stop complaining, Wakaba.” Cana teased as she approached.
“Please.” Carla added in annoyance.
“Well, look who actually woke up. Great, now I owe Macao ten Jewels. I thought for sure you'd be the first one caught.”
“Didn't I tell you to stop gambling so much? You're not good at it.” The still tipsy Card Mage giggled.
“Easy for you to say when you basically cheat.” He grumbled.
Cana let out a fake gasp. “Cheat? Using my magic isn't cheating.”
“It definitely is, but I don't have time for this. The shops close soon and then I have to swing by the house. Wife's always complaining about me being home, but the second I tell her I have to be gone a day, she's mad about that.”
“See you out there.”
She watched the older man walk toward an already overcrowded shop before she looked back at the female Exceed.
“Not hiding with anyone from 'Team Natsu'?”
“Don't be ridiculous. I intend to not be caught, and hiding in a group with more than one target is not likely to keep that from happening.”
“That's true, so I guess that means you wouldn't want to hang with me tomorrow then?”
Carla sputtered. “Your father has been telling every soul he comes in contact with that he's going to find you. I would be a fool to attach myself to you.”
“Fair enough. Good luck tomorrow, doll.”
Cana shuffled her way towards Fairy Hills where she found a few familiar faces sitting either beside or in the large tree next to the building. She took another swig of alcohol and walked right up to the group.
“See anything good, boys?”
“Oh, looks who's actually awake before midnight.” The taller of the peepers said with some genuine surprise.
“Don't change the subject, Thunder Boy. Who're we trying to sneak a peek at? From here, it looks like my baby doll, Levy.”
“It ain't like that ya damn drunk.”
“Oh, Gajeel's the one in the tree. See, I knew he had eyes for ass, but I pegged you as more of a tit man, Laxus.”
“Shut the hell up!” They yelled at the same time.
“Cana.” Freed greeted from his seat on the ground next to where Laxus was leaning against the tree.
“Freed. Didn't see you down there. Guess you always did like to be under Thunder Boy here though.”
“W-hw-I w-” The intellectual Mage stammered.
“Leave him alone, Cana.” Laxus said irritably.
“Is she wrong though?” A new voice questioned with a laugh from above her.
“Bickslow's here too, huh? So you really are gawking at someone then.”
“No, we're not.” Laxus countered.
“They're not.” Bickslow corrected jokingly.
“So then, what are you creeps doing outside the girls' apartments? Hm?”
“Surveillance.” All four answered at once.
“Uh huh. You have fun with that.”
She turned to leave the way she'd come and heard Freed call after her.
“Weren't you going inside, Cana?”
“Nah, I only show when I want. It's no fun for me to let you all get a look without knowing.”
“That's-”
“Besides, I need you guys to not know where I am when this thing starts. Don't want to make it too easy for the old man. See you guys out there!”
She downed the remainder of her potent beverage as she made her way to South Gate Park. Her vision began to blur like it had earlier that afternoon and she knew she didn't have long to find a place to lay down. With as much grace as she could muster, she made her way down the few steps to the grassy area, cheering for herself as she only stumbled twice without actually falling, and promptly tossed the empty jug into the nearest bush before passing out and following it in there herself.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Natsu had been watching and listening to the group gathered in Lucy's apartment for while before a familiar, covered face joined him on the roof. He gave a wave without really looking and continued listening to Gray and Elfman brainstorming. It wasn't until the figure sat beside him that he redirected his gaze.
“Hey Jellal. Tryin' to find Erza?”
“Something like that. I wasn't sure whether she'd group up or hide alone, but now I have my answer.”
“I didn't think she'd be in such a big group, but looks like she's gonna go all out tomorrow.” He admired. “Man, it's not fair. I want to fight her!”
Jellal chuckled. “If it makes you feel any better, you did say that you were going to fight anyone that got in the way of you capturing Lucy, so with them being paired up you may still get the chance to spar with her after all.”
“Is that really allowed?!” He practically yelled.
“It was your own words. I have no issue with you fighting with her as long as you don't mark her.”
“Deal! Oh this is gonna be awesome!”
The masked man chuckled. “I agree. This is going to be a fun day. I'm going to turn in for the night now that I've got the information I came for. Try to get some rest tonight, Natsu.”
“See ya tomorrow!”
The Fire Dragon Slayer watched Lucy and the others for a little while longer before the blonde turned her head to look out the window and caught sight of him. He could see her gasp and then send him one of her signature glares and he couldn't help but laugh. He waved a goodbye to her before she had a chance to alert the others of his presence and then dashed away with a chuckle.
It was well after midnight, and he decided that rather than go to his and Happy's out of the way home, he would go to the guildhall to get some sleep. Master Makarov had told the Dragon Slayers to meet him there before 8 a.m., so this was really the best way to make sure he was there on time anyway. He pouted a bit when he noticed that the resident drunk was no where to be seen, but decided the bar had to be the most comfortable place to lay down for the night.
“Are you sleeping here tonight, Natsu?”
“Huh?” Natsu whipped his head to the left in confusion. “Jet? How the heck did ya sneak up on me like that?”
“So it worked then. You didn't hear or smell me? I wasn't sure when I ran past Gajeel earlier.”
“I really didn't, but...how?”
“Don't worry about it, man. Levy's a genius, as usual.” He turned to leave, but with a look over his shoulder he added: “Also, Mira keeps a pillow and blanket behind the bar for Cana; if you need it.”
“Nah, I'll be alright. Thanks though.”
“Don't mention it, just make sure you get some sleep or you're gonna crash during the game like I did during the last race.”
“I remember that! Man, you really thought you were gonna cross the line before all of us too!” Natsu held his stomach as he laughed at the Speed Mage's downfall.
“Yeah...well this year's gonna be different. Gajeel thinks he can get take out Team Shadow Gear, but he doesn't even know what we have planned for tomorrow.”
“Not to bum ya out or anything, but he told us that he's only goin' after Levy and that anyone can tag you, Droy, and Lily.”
“Wh...seriously?!”
“Yeah, he's really serious about just gettin' Levy.”
“Wow...what a...you know what, never mind. Even if he manages to find her, he'll have to go through us and that's not happening. I'll catch you later, Natsu.”
“No, I'll catch YOU later.”
Jet shook his head and then disappeared, leaving a trail of dust floating down towards the wooden floor. It was good that Levy's enchantment had worked, but they were going to need to alter their initial hiding place if the Dragon Slayers were really all going to be starting at the hall. He sighed as he ran, thinking about the next twenty four hours; he could already tell that this game was going to be hell.

Chapter Text
It was shortly after the sun rose the next morning when Makarov Dreyar arrived at the guildhall. He was eager to get the fun started, and as he entered the hall he could see that he wasn't the only one. Ignoring the way two heads snapped immediately in his direction while the remaining six more calmly turned to face him, he walked passed the group and positioned himself atop the bar.
“Good morning, seekers. I won't take up too much time, but I have your enchanted stamps here. They each have their own symbol, so that we can tally up how many people each team manages to find by tomorrow morning. Once you have yours, wait to hear the announcement and then you are all free to hunt.”
Natsu eagerly rushed forward to grab his stamp while Gildarts, who'd opted for sitting on a stool just beside where the Fairy Tail Guild Master stood atop the bar, reached his hand out and grabbed the one with a sun carved into it. Two of Bickslow's totems grabbed the stamps adorned with a mountain while Freed took the two with crescent moons etched into them. Jellal took the remaining stamps with the symbol of a cloud on the end.
“Announcement?” Wendy asked curiously as she accepted the offered item from her partner.
“PREPARE TO COMMENCE MAGNOLIA'S GILDARTS SHIFT! CITIZENS, PLEASE TAKE YOUR DESIGNATED POSITIONS IMMEDIATELY!”
The Dragon Slayers and their teammates, minus Laxus and the man mentioned in the sudden announcement, all faced the Fairy Tail Guild Master in surprise.
“Did you really expect me to chance any additional damage to the city?” He said over the commotion caused by the moving ground. Once it subsided a few minutes later, he added: “We've actually made some improvements to the Shift so that rather than having a direct line through Magnolia to the hall, it splits the heart of the city around the cathedral into four separate spaces as well. Anyone there right now has probably found themselves either lowered into the pathway or at least separated from any other members of the guild they've decided to make a team with. Best not let the opportunity to catch them even more off guard go. See you all tomorrow.”
The movement was instantaneous as the Fire Dragon Slayer ignited his fists and yelled out in excitement. In a flash of fire and smoke, he dashed form the guildhall and took to running atop of the roofs of the building to begin making his way to the cathedral. Guildarts laughed heartily and waved a casual goodbye to Makarov before making his way down the stone steps into the Shift designed specifically for him.
Gajeel was the next to leave, eager to begin his own hunt for the day. He let his signature chuckle escape his mouth as he transformed his arms into iron poles and propelled himself forward with surprising speed to the top of the nearest building. Freed merely sighed as he waved to his friends currently standing against the wall to his right and then calmly saw himself out, deciding it'd be best to go west to the residential area first rather than joining the majority of the group in the shopping district.
Jellal looked down at his young Dragon Slayer partner and smiled while gesturing to let her take the lead. She smiled back at him and practically skipped outside to take the lower path into the center of Magnolia. Jellal adjusted his mask and gave the old man at the bar a nod before following her to the stone steps.
Laxus kicked off of the wall he'd been leaning against and sprinted from the building, beckoning for Bickslow to follow. The Seith Mage let out a maniacal laugh and ran after the Thunder Dragon Slayer with his wooden totems joining in his laughter as they fly around him. The pair opted to take advantage of the Gildart's Shift in order to reach their destination faster and gave a good spirited farewell to the older man and the other two walking along with him when they passed them by.
As the two ran down the stone path, Laxus listened to Bickslow take guesses on who they'd catch first.
“It'd be awesome to catch a group of them right of the bat, man.”
“Yeah it would, but just remember we've got a full day out here. We need to conserve our magic.”
“Oh, of course. Not like we can really go all out anyway. We'd kill most the guild if we did.”
“Exactly, so try not to get yourself too wound up, alright?”
“I would never.” Bickslow said with a toothy grin.
“Right. You're basically the poster child for restraint.”
“Well control is my specialty, ya know.” The Seith said with another laugh.
“Tch. Control of others, you mean.”
“Eh, details. Anyway, I'm pretty sure we're gonna catch Ever first. She's not gonna have a clue what to do on her own!” The Seith Mage yelled gleefully.
Laxus let out his own laugh. “You say that now, but she's always been resourceful. She's likely to put others in the way if she sees us comin'.”
“Hahaha! Yeah, you're not wrong, but I bet ya twenty Jewel we get her first though.”
“You're on.”
They found themselves at the first branch off with the path opening up on the left and right as well as continuing forward. They gave each other a small glance before continuing onward in the direction they'd already been heading. The sounds of the Fire and Iron Dragon Slayer's appearance in the square hit them and they sped up as they emerged from the walkway.
“Let's do this!” Bickslow shouted eagerly.
“Chill out, Bicks. I'm smelling something...something floral.”
“Evergreen. Well, that didn't take long. How far?”
“Can't be too far if it's this strong.” He inhaled deeply. “Heh. Oh, Ever...”
“What's so funny?”
“She's definitely not alone. Got a couple of familiar scents along with hers.”
“Oh, yeah? Replaced us that easily, huh? Who're the not-so-lucky body shields?”
Laxus exhaled. “Nab and Vijeeter.”
“Seriously? Of all people, she's gonna team up with the guy who never takes jobs and his tiny dancing pal?”
“Seems that way. Ready to show her why that's a mistake?”
“Hell yeah.”
The pair slowed to a light jog until they reached the end of the seemingly deserted street. Laxus held out his hand to his comrade, signaling him to stop just behind him, and then pointed to the right. Bickslow smirked and then walked to opening of the indicated alleyway.
“Oh, EEEEEVVVVVVEEEEERRRRRRRR! Why don't ya come on out?”
“Yeah, Ever!”
“Come ooouuuut!”
“We're gonna get ya!”
“TIME TO DIE!”
“Remember the conversation we literally just had about not getting too eager?” Laxus asked his clearly excited friend as he eyed the soul totems dashing around crazily.
“You're just upset that I'm gonna get that twenty Jewel from ya.”
“Yeah right. It's still early.” The Dragon Slayer walked a little further into the alley. “Nab, Vijeeter we know you're back there too. Come on out and get stamped or we're comin' in swinging.”
Laxus heard hushed, frantic tones being exchanged and chuckled. Vijeeter seemed to be ready to stand and fight, but Nab was arguing his point to surrender and accept their fate. His smiled grew when he heard the panicked voice of the female Thunder Legion Mage telling them both to shutup and get it together.
“Hey, there's no need to be so rude, Ever. Last chance to come out and end this peacefully before we come in. I'll count to the ten for you.”
Bickslow laughed maniacally and his totems did the same which only caused the voices to grow in volume.
“One.”
“Guys, please!” Nab begged.
“Two.”
“There is no way I'm going to be the first one caught!” Evergreen complained.
“Three.”
“Nab, don't worry! We can make it past them, I'm sure.” Vijeeter tried.
“Four.”
“Are you crazy?! There's not way we're getting out of this!” Nab cried.
“Five.”
“Would you two just shutup already?!” Evergreen shouted anxiously.
“Six.”
“Laxus, please let me go! I can't be the first one out!” She pleaded in vain.
“Seven.”
“PLEASE!”
“Eight.”
“Sorry, Ever, but your time's almost up! Hahaha!” Bickslow tormented.
“Nine.”
“No, I'm going out! Let go!” Nab yelled as he apparently tried to free himself from the grip of the others.
“And that's ten. Ready or not, here we come.” Laxus declared.
The sounds of the struggle further into the alley ceased suddenly as Laxus motioned for Bickslow forward. The Thunder Dragon Slayer remained standing just inside the passage to stop anyone should they make it past the Seith Mage. He watched as his friend check behind a pile of crates that had been stacked to the left by a door before he continued further down.
When he was about halfway into the corridor, Nab emerged from behind a dumpster off to the right. Bickslow chuckled, but then quickly cursed as Vijeeter spun out from the same spot and slid to his left while Nab went into a run off to his right. No doubt seeing her only chance, Evergreen took it and fly up above them all.
“Shit! Get 'er babies!” The Thunder Legion Mage yelled as he kicked the back of Vijeeter's right knee.
The smaller man tumbled to the ground gracefully and regained his footing in a swift, rhythmic movement. Nab, meanwhile, summoned his Bear Knuckle and took a swing at Bickslow's turned back. The contact was hard and sent the Seith Mage stumbling forwards into the brick wall while the Animal Possession Wizard continued after his dancing friend.
“I've got these two, Bickslow! You want your money, then you're gonna have to detain Evergreen!” Laxus informed as he rushed further into the path.
Bickslow cursed again, but climbed his way up the wall to the roof the building he'd been forced into hitting. Laxus watched as he disappeared from view and then directed his attention to the two men who were now almost upon him. He turned his body to the left slight so that his weight was primarily on his right foot and then he pushed off in a flash of thunder.
“Alright boys, let's do this!” He yelled with a smile.
“Vij, now!” Nab countered.
“Right!”
Before Laxus could make contact with the smaller of the mages, the dancer went down into the splits and then sent a kick to the blonde's thigh as he rolled out of the way. Nab turned and threw out a Tiger's Scratch at the Dragon Slayer, but it was blocked effortlessly. In response, the Slayer dashed into the Seith's personal space, but was shocked when this caused the man to smirk.
“ELEPHANT BASH!”
With the force of a full grown elephant, Laxus was headbutted and sent flying over Vijeeter into the pile of wooden crates on the left, which erupted into splintered pieces. The pair ran from the alleyway and shared a look of triumph as they continued running from the scene. The accomplishment was short lived as the sky darkened and thunder began to erupt not just in the sky but around them as they pressed onward.
The Thunder Dragon appeared suddenly in front of Nab and he was unable to stop himself from running directly into his large, muscular arm. He fell onto his back with a gasp as the air was knocked from throat. Meanwhile, Vijeeter was blocking the onslaught of thunder strikes, but found himself backed up against the wall of one of the shops on the right side of the street. In one movement, Laxus sent thunder from his feet to the ground and the Dancing Mage found himself being electrified briefly before his legs gave out and he also hit the ground.
“That was a nice move back there, gentlemen, really. Sorry it wasn't enough.”
Laxus pulled his stamp out from the pocket he'd placed it in earlier and brought it down on the back of first Nab's left hand and then Vijeeter's. He watched as the mountain symbol glowed green before returning the item back to it's place in his jacket. When he turned around, he saw Bickslow, without his totems, jumping onto the ground a few buildings down.
“Evergreen?” Laxus questioned vaguely.
“She got away.” He answered simply.
“Told ya she was crafty.” He joked. When there wasn't a response he added: “Don't sweat it. We've got all day to get her.”
“Yeah, you're right.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Freed could hear commotion in the distance as he crossed the bridge to the western residential area. He shook his head as he saw thunderclouds forming over an area close to the cathedral.
“It appears they're having fun.”
This area of Magnolia was always calm and quiet due to it's distance from the inner city and he was appreciative of just how serene it was this morning. If anyone were hiding here, then there was no evidence of it. He walked around the first few buildings, offering a wave to some of the children peaking out of a second story window as he passed.
Just as he made it to the furthest point from the bridge, he caught movement from the corner of his eye and acted without hesitation. He turned and ran at full speed after the retreating form that was now just about to make it onto the overpass. The person wasn't moving very quickly and when he made it to the entrance to the structure, he could see why.
“Kinana!” He addressed in a raised voice so that she would hear him clearly from her own place on the other side of the bridge.
“Hi, Freed. I was really hoping you wouldn't notice me, you know.” She said kindly.
“Believe me, I wish I hadn't. Perhaps I can spare you this one time if you provide me with some intel. Are there any others hiding in this area?” Honestly, what was the Master thinking when he included her in this challenge?
“Spare me? I don't want you to do that!”
“You don't?”
“Of course not! I may not have magic, but I'm still a member of Fairy Tail! I won't be telling you anything to jeopardize another guild member and I won't go down without a fight!”
“You're certain you want to do things the difficult way, Kinana?”
“I am.” She said firmly.
“Very well. I apologize in advance for this.” It would be an insult for me to take it easy on her, but I can't go all out either. Seems I'll have to play this quickly and carefully.
As if sensing what would happen next, the purple-haired barmaid straightened her posture and put up her fists. Freed frowned slightly, guilty about how easy this battle would truly be, but then when he saw her determined face his features softened. It never ceased to amaze him just how incredible all of the members of his guild truly were when faced against the odds.
He took in a breath and then dashed across the bridge, closing the distance between himself and Kinana in a matter of seconds. She dodged his initial attack by sidestepping and he could tell that she was trying to create more space between them again. Seeing as how the outcome would be the same regardless of the range, he continued to invade her space in order to save himself some time; although, he never truly connected a blow to her body.
“You're holding back. I can tell!” Kinana said disappointedly.
“I assure you, I am not.”
After one more sidestep, Kinana found herself unable to move anymore. Her body refused to move no matter how hard she tried to make it. She looked up into Freed's eyes and then glanced around her in confusion. Evidently, the Enchantment Mage had caught onto her pattern of blocking and each time he had stepped near her, he'd placed an enchantment until finally she completed the square and it activated the trap.
“Wow...you weren't lying.” She said in awe.
“I was not. I am sorry about this, but as a sign of mercy I'll stamp you with Natsu's symbol. At least then you'll be forced to work in something not completely humiliating.”
“I appreciate that, Freed.”
He removed the crescent branded mechanism from his pocket and then drew a rune on it; the symbol shone for a moment before dulling and then the symbol changed to a shining sun. Freed walked to stand directly in front of his guildmate and took her right hand, gently stamping her hand with a shiny, orange sun. He stepped back and deactivated the enchantment so that she would be free to go about her day before leaving the residential area and making his way into what he new was going to be the most chaotic zone of the city.
I wonder how the others are fairing already.

Chapter Text
Wendy, Jellal, and Gildarts made conversation as they casually walked along the Shift toward the now separated shopping district of Magnolia. The older of the three was chuckling as Wendy accepted his request to send Cana his way should she run into her out in the field. The youngest Dragon Slayer smiled proudly with determination as she vowed to chase the generally drunken Card Mage into the Shift if their paths were to cross. Jellal merely smiled warmly under his disguise at the exchange and kept his casual pace slightly behind the two legitimate Fairy Tail guild members.
When they came to the first cross in the path, the small girl and her temporary partner in hunting decided to go to the right in hopes of wrapping around the thunderous chaos that had already ensued ahead of them. Gildarts gave the pair a wave before continuing forward just as Laxus and Bickslow had no doubt done, as he hoped to catch any stragglers hoping to duck the Thunder Buddy Duo – as he called them teasingly. He was certain that someone would've taken the opportunity to take the quicker path to another hiding place and he stretched his toned arms over his head as he ever so slightly quickened his pace.
Jellal was finding himself also having to adjust his speed as Wendy all but skipped eagerly down the Shift in hopes of finding someone to stamp right away. Makarov had been incredibly vague about what the additional prize would be for whichever Slayer catches the most of their guildmates, but Wendy was deteremined to win whatever it was. She made sure to bring up her agreement with him as they walked every so often as she listed out just how many mages she suspected to capture; whether that was out of kindness or to remind herself that Erza was a priority, Jellal couldn't be sure.
They finally reached the next turn in the path, which went to the left and found another stone staircase directly ahead of them as well.
“What do you think, Wendy?” Jellal asked politely. “Should we continue around or exit the Shift here?”
Placing a dainty hand to her chin, she hummed for a second. “I think we should go up there now! The others are already ahead of us and I want to get started!”
“Very well. Let's get up there then.”
With a twinkle in her eyes and a swift nod, she took off up the steps with Jellal calmly following behind with a wider space inbetween each step he took in order to keep up with her. Within a minute, they had breached the surface to the west of the cathedral near the water. This part of town was littered with shops of all kinds as well as some residences, so they were in for quite the seeking job.
“Do you think we should check the shops first?” Jellal questioned in a lower tone that he suspected Mystogan would use.
“I'm not sure...do you think that's too obvious?” She asked genuinely.
“It could be, but I would think that if we were going to check them that now and towards the end of the day would be the best times. There will be more of a chance that someone sneaks to get something early or late when they think they can get away with it.”
“That's a good point. Okay! I'll check the shops up this way,” She said pointing to the south back towards the direction of the guildhall, “and you can go that way,” she advised with a gesture to the north, “and then we can meet back here by the stairs.”
“Sounds good. Just yell if you need me, alright?”
“Aye, sir!”
With that she sprinted into the nearest shop, one of many bait and tackle shops in the area, disappearing from sight. He let out a small laugh and then turned to go further down the somewhat deserted street. It was unlikely, he thought, that he would find Erza this soon so he took to walking the entire length of the cobblestone walkway and then entered the last store there.
“Welcome in! I'll be with you in just one second!” A voice called from a room located behind the counter.
It was a souvenir shop that he'd waltzed into. He paid no mind to the clutter of key rings, journals, and other assorted Magnolia branded items as he walked the length of the square room. The store was empty save for himself and the worker who had just emerged from the backroom.
“Oh, you're one of the Fairy Tail wizards! I saw you in the Grand Magic Games!”
Jellal turned to greet the voice and was met with a kind looking old man. His darkened skin was littered with wrinkles, including on his aged face where there were some that indicated he had smiled often in his long life while his green/brown eyes gleamed deceptively with youth. He was smiling at Jellal and the Crime Sorciere wizard found himself unable to not return the smile, though it would only be visible in his eyes.
“I am. You wouldn't happen to have seen any other members of my guild around this morning, would you?”
“Well, now that you mention it, I did see that young man with all the piercings from the Games run by here in a hurry. He usually stops in and helps me with these darn heavy boxes every week, but that shouldn't be for another two days, so I thought that it was odd for him to be around here.”
Jellal nodded and opened his covered mouth to voice his understanding, but was unable to as the aged man continued his conversation.
“Then I remembered that good ole Makarov sent out the memo letting us know that you lot were going to be running around after each other today. Seems like a fun game you have going on. Reminds me of when I was a younger man, but back then I wasn't chasing my friends, mind you. I was chasing the love of my life.”
Jellal decided to interject before the kind man could keep going. “That is something I am very familiar with, sir. I appreciate your kindness and the information. I should get going now, but I hope you have a great day.”
“Well I'll do my best. Let that other young man know I'll have his usual helping of scraps waiting for his visit this week; if you happen to see him that is.”
“Of course.”
He gave a slight bow and then exited the shop. The sun was still on it's rising course and the street was still essentially empty, save for a few residents going about their day. Wendy was no where in sight, indicating that she was still inside one of the other shops further down the stretch of stone. After ensuring none of the Fairy Tail members were around, Jellal walked forwards and entered the fishing accessory store next door to the novelty shop.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wendy had cleared the bait and tackle shop easily and was now checking out the boat rental building next door. The man who greeted her here was around Macao and Wakaba's age, but well put together. He was perfectly tanned, likely from being out in the sun guessing by his line of work, and his blue eyes were bright and kind. He gave her a wave and she returned it.
“Good morning, little lady. How can I be of service today?”
“Good morning! My name is Wendy, I'm a Fairy Tail mage and I was wondering if you've seen any of my friends around today.” She smiled sweetly up at him.
“I thought you looked familiar. My family and I watched the Games this year specifically because we heard your guild was making a comeback. You did very well!”
“Thank you, sir.” She said with a slight blush caused by the embarrassment of being recognized for the millionth time since they won the Grand Magic Games.
“Anytime. My name's Eiren and I'm the owner of this business here. As for your friends, the intimidating looking Dragon Slayer with the long hair ran by here a little while ago and there was a sweet couple that I also recognized from the Games that was passing through very early this morning when I came to open for the day.”
“A couple? Can you tell me what they looked like?”
“Of course. The young woman was a pretty thing with blue hair and her arm was wrapped around the young man's very tightly. I believe he was the ice user who took out the Sabertooth wizard if I remember correctly. My own little girl has quite the crush on him, you see.”
“Gray and Juvia! Do you know where they were heading?”
“I'm not entirely sure, but they went across the bridge down the road there.”
“Thank you so much! Have a great day, Eiren, sir!”
“You too now! Try not to get into too much trouble!”
With an: “I'll try my best!” she ran from the shop and yelled out for Mystogan, after nearly saying Jellal's real name instead, and made her way toward the bridge that was perfectly placed in between her and him. The masked man emerged from a shop further down the road and sprinted the distance between the two when he saw her jogging toward him. She had an excited look on her face when she stopped abruptly beside the bridge joining this side of town to the western residential area.
“Is everything alright?” Jellal asked the giddy girl.
“Better than alright! Eiren, the owner of the boat rental shop down the road, says that he saw Gajeel running around here!” Wendy smiled proudly at him and he had to sustain a sigh.
“I was told the same thing by the kind man who owns the trinket shop down there.” He pointed back in the direction he'd come from. “Not to be negative, but that doesn't help us much considering he's not someone we can tag.”
“True, but he also mentioned that he saw two other people running across this bridge before that.” Her smile broadened and she was practically bouncing with excitement.
“Oh? Well that is better than alright.” His smile reached his eyes as he patted Wendy's head gently. “Did he happen to say who they were?”
“Mhmmmmm! It was Gray and Juvia!” She squeaked.
Jellal raised an eyebrow. “You know we can't get Gray, right? Natsu's going after him.”
“Yeah, but no one said anything about Juvia! She'll look so good in the JBG outfit!”
“J...BG?”
“Jiggle Butt Gang! The inspiration for my outfit comes from them.”
Wendy smiled brightly up at him, but Jellal couldn't fight the twitch in his eye. Her smile turned into a questioning look and her head tilted to the side. He closed his eyes and sighed.
“I knew it looked familiar when Reedus was drawing it...of all things to base...well...anything on, why a group of...er...questionable criminals?”
The small girl simply shrugged and smiled again. “Sure they don't always do the best of things, but they're really nice when you get to know them.”
“I'll take your word for it. So, shall we catch us a Water Mage?”
“Mhm!”
The determination was clear in her eye again as she nodded and walked, purposefully, across the bridge with Jellal following behind. Once they were across, the two decided to split up yet again with Wendy going to the right and the older man going left. It was as they went on their own that the sky behind them lit up with thunder and Jellal began to wonder how the other teams were doing this early on in the day.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gildarts had finally made it to the heart of the city as the lightning subsided and he couldn't help but laugh at the obvious sign that Laxus was definitely not taking it too easy on the other members of Fairy Tail above. Rather than join the inevitable chaos, he opted to bide his time below the city as he was certain that someone was bound to try to hide from that onslaught as far from the sky as they could get. He was proven right much sooner than he'd expected when a group consisting of Happy, Lucy, and Elfman, who was carrying a bound Bickslow, suddenly dropped into the lowered path.
“Well, well, well. Just what do we have here?” Gildarts asked in both genuine confusion and awe.
The group visibly straightened at the sound of his voice and he grinned. This was a typical response to his presence, and for whatever reason seeing his guildmates stiffen was getting him excited when usually in this situation, with criminals or beasts, he would feel almost bored; it was beginning to feel a lot like the S-Class Trial. He crossed his arms as they each turned around, very slowly, and looked at him with wide, disbelieving eyes.
“I told you this was a bad idea...” Lucy all but whispered toward Happy.
“W-well h-how was I-I supposed t-to know?” Happy stuttered with tears in his eyes.
“We did say a real man would be down here rather than up there...” Elfman said through gritted, chattering teeth.
“Mira s-said we h-had to get ou-out of s-s-sight!” The blue Exceed cried.
“Hey now, little guy.” Gildarts soothed teasingly. “How about you fill me in on what's going on here, huh? I won't make a move until after, I promise.” He sat with his back against the wall as if to prove this.
“I-I...”
“Don't, Happy.” Lucy said with a small, but still courageous, step forward.
“Awe, come on, Lucy. I want to know what's going on more than I want to tag any of you. Isn't that better than me comin' at you all with everything I've got?”
His eye took on a menacing glint and that small step that the Celestial Spirit Mage had just taken was instantly retracted. Elfman audibly gulped and set the unconscious, tied up man down on the ground next to him as Happy floated down into Lucy's arms. The blonde seemed to weigh the options for a moment before she finally let out a small sigh and then tried to make herself comfortable on the cold, stone ground.
“Alright, if we tell you, then you'll let us go?” Lucy questioned.
“Sure, if you tell me what happened, I'll let you go.”
“Okay...well it all started this morning when the Shift happened.”
--------------------------------FLASHBACK----------------------------
“PREPARE TO COMMENCE MAGNOLIA'S GILDARTS SHIFT! CITIZENS, PLEASE TAKE YOUR DESIGNATED POSITIONS IMMEDIATELY!”
“WAIT WHAT?!” Lucy yelled in a panic as she and the rest of her group ran down the street that was now splitting in front of them.
“Master must have decided to take extra precautions with Gildarts being involved!” Erza yelled back over the noise of the parting road.
“We can't keep going this way!” Mira informed the team. “We'll have to choose a way around or find somewhere else to go.”
“But Sis,” Lisanna debated, “the guildhall is going to be the safest place at this point. Surely we can just jump across and keep going...”
“Well,” Mira responded, “we could, but considering that's the direction they're all going to be coming from, I think we need to rethink things.”
“You guys have fun with that. Juvia and I are going back the way we just came from.” Gray declared from behind everyone. “If Natsu's going to be coming full speed this way like I know he is, then I'm getting as far from here as possible.”
“Hear that, Lucy? My darling Gray and Juvia are going to hide together. Alone.” Juvia added slyly with a small chuckle of victory.
“Why do you think that I'm bothered?!” Lucy yelled in exasperation.
“We'll catch up with you guys later.” Gray said before sprinting off in the opposite direction with Juvia hot on his heels.
Once the two were no longer in sight, the group started trying to come up with a new plan. Elfman had suggested going somewhere manly, like the top of the cathedral while Erza offered the idea of going southwest, around the Dragon Slayers, to Fairy Hills. Before they could reach a compromise, the sky illuminated and the ground to the east shook furiously.
“Laxus.” Mira breathed.
“He found someone already?!” Lucy squealed.
“I wonder who.” Lisanna added.
Suddenly, a flying Evergreen appeared on the roof of the building next to them with Bickslow's totems circling her.
“Evergreen!” Erza yelled, gaining the woman's attention.
“Oh thank God!” She cried desperately while leaping to the ground.
“What's going on? Are you being chased?” Lucy asked.
“Yes! Bickslow is coming for me and his stupid, little souls won't leave me alone!”
“EVERRRRRRR!”
“GOT YA NOW!”
“MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”
“And I'm fairly certain that this one is deranged!” She screamed as she swatted at the flying wooden totem laughing nonstop.
“OH EEEEEEVVVVVVERGREEEEEEEENNNNNNNNN!”
Everyone paused and turned their attention to the roof that Evergreen had just been standing on. Sure enough, there stood the Seith Mage of the Thunder Legion who seemed proud and ready for a fight. Erza and Mirajane immediately squared their shoulders and went into a fighting stance.
“Well well! You've made more friends already! I'm hurt!” He mocked.
“Just leave me alone already, Bicks! You have plenty of targets here to hunt!”
“HEY!” Lucy, Happy, Elfman, and Lisanna yelled in unison.
“What?! It's nothing personal!” She countered.
“Could've fooled me!” Lucy argued.
“I could let ya go, Ever, but I've got twenty Jewel riding on you bein' the first person tagged! Though...I'm tempted to get pretty, little Lissy now that I'm here.” He flashed the youngest Strauss sibling a large, toothy smirk and she scrunched her face, hoping to stop a blush, in response.
“You'll have to go through me first, Bickslow!” Elfman challenged.
“Oooooooooo! Now that would be a fun time! But I think the big bad sister and Titania are wanting to go first, Big Guy.”
“Come on down and let's get this started then, Bick!” Mira yelled.
“Yes, let's not waste time!” Erza urged.
“Well, I can't deny two beauties such as yourselves now can I?”
Lisanna huffed and rolled her eyes, but didn't turn away from the Seith Mage as he leapt from the roof, incorporating an unnecessary mid-air back spin, and landed a few feet in front of the two S-Class Mages blocking his path.
“Stay behind us!” Mira and Erza sternly instructed the rest of the group.
Evergreen cowered behind the towering form of Elfman, who straightened up as if to offer her more room to hide as Bickslow cackled maniacally. His totems joined in, creating an unsettling atmosphere, but it only lasted a few seconds before he made a mad dash for the two women with his souls flying forwards at an alarming speed. Erza requipped into her Clear Heart armor and began fending off the irritating, and somewhat painful when they managed to make contact, wooden objects while Mirajane opted to transforming into her Satan Soul: Halphas form.
The Seith Mage attempted using his Figure Eyes on the attacking women, but neither of them met his glowing green gaze. The scarlet-haired swordswoman finally managed to deflect the totems long enough to aid her ivory-haired teammate in pressing the assault on Bickslow. The three struggled for all of a few minutes before Mirajane finally managed to get the definitive upper hand and smacked the Thunder Legion Wizard into the air; Erza took this opportunity to leap up and kick the man back down into the ground, hard, where he fell unconscious.
“That...that was so fast!” Lucy said incredulously.
“Yes, he didn't put up as much of a fight as I had hoped.” Erza smugly confirmed.
“Well now that that's handled...see you all later!” Evergreen said as she once again took flight, leaving the group behind her.
“That's about right.” Lisanna said with a sigh. “Wait! Sis what're you doing?!”
“I'm borrowing Bickslow's clothes.”
“Wh-why?!” Lisanna questioned as her face lit up.
“No reason.” Mira responded in her usual sing-song voice. “We should probably get going now.” She said once the Seith Mage was stripped, tied, and blindfolded.
“Aye!” Happy agreed. “We'll keep getting spotted staying out in the open like this!”
“You're right about that, pal!”
The entire group snapped their heads to yet another roof where another familiar, and unwelcome figure was sat. Lucy's mouth was gaped open and her eyes were wide as she met the usually comforting gaze of the Fire Dragon Slayer. Erza and Mirajane were once again ready for a fight as they stared up at their scrapper guild member.
“Natsu...” Lucy breathed in alarm.
“Heya, Luce!”
“Don't get cute with me right now! How did you find us so fast!”
“Sheesh, I thought ya'd be happy to see me...I mean you're all in a big group so I kinda thought ya wanted to fight.”
“Natsu, you jerk!” Happy cried. “First you don't pick me to be your partner and now you're trying to get me first!”
“Heheh. Sorry, buddy. I'll tell ya what. I'll give you and Lucy a head start while I take on Erza and Mira, how's that sound?”
“We're not gonna just leave them here to take you on, Natsu!” Lucy yelled in defiance.
“Well, if that's what ya want to do...but just so ya know I'm not allowed to tag either of them, so I'm really only here for you two anyway.”
“WHAT?!” The Exceed and Celestial Spirit Mage screamed in unison.
“What do you mean you can't tag us?” Mirajane asked skeptically.
“I mean that I told Laxus and Jellal that I wouldn't tag you, just like they won't tag Lucy or Gray.”
“Wait...Jellal made you agree to this?” Erza questioned sternly.
“Well, yeah, but only after Gajeel made us promise not to go for Levy. So, now we have our own targets that we're gonna get today that none of the others can.”
“In that case, maybe you two should leave...” Lisanna said to Lucy and Happy.
“I'm not even a target for you, Natsu?! That's so mean, you stupid jerk!” Happy yelled in tears.
“Of course ya are, but I just didn't tell them that cause Wendy and Gajeel didn't mention Carla or Lily. Doesn't mean I won't get ya!”
“Lisanna's right! You two go! Elfman, take Bickslow and go with them!” Mira instructed.
“I'm not leaving you, Big Sis! I can help take him on!”
“No, you're not safe from being marked by him! Erza and I can keep him busy while you get away!”
“But-”
“Go, Big Brother!” Lisanna said as she stepped up to join the other two women. “I'll stay and help too!”
“Lisanna-”
“I'm staying, Sis! Natsu!”
“Yeah?”
“Bickslow said he wanted to mark me when he came after Evergreen, so I'm guessing that means you're not allowed to. Am I right?”
“Yeah, he said he wanted to get ya.” The Slayer said with a shrug.
“Thought so.” She said with the smallest hint of a blush as she looked at the unconscious man currently being lifted from the ground. “We'll hold him off.”
“Get out of sight, quickly!” Mirajane added. “Laxus may show up any minute now looking for Bickslow!”
“Shouldn't we leave him here then?” Lucy asked.
“No, I think I just got an idea.” The oldest Strauss sibling said with a mischievous glint in her eye.
“O...kay?” Lucy said, unsure if she wanted to know what that meant.
“Go, now!” Erza commanded as Natsu stood up and cracked his knuckles.
Needing no further urging, Happy grabbed Lucy and flew into the air away from the soon to be feuding Fairy Tail Mages with Elfman rushing after them. They felt the heat of Natsu's flames and heard the sound of metal hitting another hard object before they came face to face with the gap caused by the Shift. Happy and Lucy floated over it while Elfman stood on the edge of it, looking down.
“You guys should keep going! I'll be alright!”
“We can't just leave you here!” Lucy yelled back.
“Maybe we should just go down there so that we'll all be together.” Happy offered.
“I don't think that's such a good idea...” Lucy said as she tried to spot any movement on the darkened path.
“I agree with Lucy. The only reason the Master'd use the Gildart's Shift is because that's where he's meant to stay.”
“But he could be in another part of the path and Lucy's right! We need to stick together so that when Bickslow wakes up we can help you handle him!”
“He's right, Elfman. Let's just go below and wait for things to calm a bit, okay? We won't be there long and probably won't even run into Gildarts.”
“I don't know about this...but alright. We just can't stay there long.”
“Right.” Lucy and Happy said together.
---------------------------END FLASHBACK--------------------------
“Sounds like you guys just don't have the best luck, huh?” Gildarts asked, clearly entertained.
“Not so far, but now that we've told you everything and you're letting us go, things are looking up.” Lucy said full of hope.
“Yeah, about that.” He stood up suddenly. “I said I would let you go. Natsu says you're off limits, so I have to let you go, but these two...” The terrifying glint had returned. “Well they're fair game.”
“Wait! You can't do that! I asked you to let us go, not just me!”
“Yeah, well like I said...it just ain't your day.”
The S-Class Mage began walking toward them slowly, menacingly. Elfman stepped in front of Happy and Lucy in defense as a response.
“You two get out of here. I can keep him busy long enough for you to get back up on the surface.” He instructed with a slight shake in his tone.
“No way. We can't just leave you here, Elfman...Happy.”
“Y-yeah?”
“Take Elfman and get somewhere safe, okay?”
“Lucy, no!” Elfman argued.
“Like he said, he can't get me. Same thing with Mira and Erza up there...I can hold him back so that you two can go hide somewhere else.”
“Lucy...I'm supposed to protect you...” Happy said sadly.
“Yeah, well...I'm supposed to protect you too. I'll catch up, I promise.”
“I...O-okay.”
“You're a real man, Lucy!” Elfman yelled as he was lifted and carried out of sight.
“Now that was somethin'. You're a brave one, I'll give ya that, but...” He was now just a foot away from her. “I think you're forgetting that I'm just not allowed to mark you. I can still detain you until Natsu gets here.”
Lucy visibly gulped. “I guess I'll just have to fight you then.”
“Guess so.” He replied with an appreciative smile. “Ready?”
“As ready as I can be.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“What took ya so long to get back anyway, Bick? Thought I was gonna have to go find ya for a minute there.” Laxus questioned the man walking beside him.
“Evergreen found some more friends and they took out my babies. Sorry to keep you waiting, man.”
“More friends, huh? Anyone interesting?”
“Oh yeah. Erza, Lucy, Elfman, Lisanna, and Mira. She got away when I took on Erza and Mira.”
“Why didn't you mention this sooner?! Where are they?”
“I didn't mention it because Natsu showed up and, as usual, cause a scene. Everyone scattered to who knows where now and last I saw, Natsu chased after Erza.”
“Huh.”
“What?”
“You're getting really fucking good at impersonating Bickslow, Mir.”
“Wh-what?”
“Ya almost had me...but there's a couple things wrong with your performance, which is really a first for us.”
“I...I don't know what you're talking...about. Ugh. Fine, how'd you know?” Her voice had gone back to it's normal tone at the end.
“Heh. For starters, Bickslow would've collected the dolls after he was done fighting. Then there's the fact that Lisanna wasn't the first name out of his mouth and the complete lack of irritatingly confident conversation...plus, you've kept the tongue in your mouth too long. And then there's also the fact that I could smell you through his clothes, which do I even want to know how or why you took them?”
“Mmmm, probably not, but darn! I thought I was doing so well! At least I'll know for next time.”
“Not gonna be a next time in this game, Sweetheart.”
“Oh, you think so, Darling?” Her tone took on a dangerous note.
“I know so, but I'll admit...I was hoping to get you later on in the game. Now I'm gonna have to go figure out where Bicks is and help him chase around Lis. Not really looking forward to that.”
“You could just walk away then, if you're really that concerned.”
He chuckled. “We both know that ain't happening. I'm takin' ya down and then the whole town's gonna know you're my bitch.”
She let out her own horrifying chuckle at that. “I've always wanted to see how rough you could be, Laxus. Up until now I think we can both agree that it's you has been my little bitch.”
His cheeks tinted pink, but otherwise he didn't let her words affect him anyway noticeable. “Be careful what ya wish for, beautiful.”

Chapter Text
Gajeel had caught Juvia and Gray's scents pretty early on, but paid no mind to either one as he scoped the eastern area. He could tell that they'd chosen to hide themselves within the residences further east, but he could sense any sign of the Shrimp or Lily choosing to do the same, so he altered his course west. This direction would take him towards where the thunder from Laxus had illuminated the sky not even an hour ago, but it couldn't be helped.
When the cathedral came into view, Gajeel could hear what sounded like an intense battle happening overhead, and with a small inhale he could tell that the Salamander and Titania were having it out. He chuckled and shook his head as he continued on his way through the busier area of Magnolia. It wasn't a shock to him that Natsu would try to throw their agreement out the window almost immediately.
'S long as it's not Levy, it ain't an issue for me.
He continued until the ground gave way to the Shift and he could hear yet another brawl happening below him; this one peaked his interest slightly and he couldn't help but stop and sit on the edge to observe for a moment. On the lowered path was the Bunny Girl and Gildarts battling it out and Gajeel once again found himself shocked at just how strong the blonde could be. There was no way in hell he'd ever choose to fight the man who was known to him long before joining Fairy Tail as one of the strongest members; especially not for some damn punishment game. An involuntary shiver ran up his spine as Lucy rolled underneath one of Guildarts' arms and the magic that was released from his blow sent a gust of dust-infested wind down the pathway.
After watching Lucy summon Taurus, who was swiftly turned into a pile of beef cubes, he noticed a figure on the ground against a wall: Bickslow. He couldn't stop the laugh that escaped him at seeing the Thunder Legion Mage tied, blindfolded, and nearly naked.
How the hell did that even happen?
“Gajeel?”
The Iron Dragon Slayer lifted his head to where the voice came from across the gap. He'd been so mesmerized by the fight that he hadn't been paying attention to his surroundings very much, but he wasn't shocked when he saw that his temporary teammate for the day was standing parallel to him, wearing his usual calm expression.
“Freed.”
“What are you doing here? I thought you went east.”
“I did, but the only ones over there are the Rain Woman and the Stripper. Thought I'd try somewhere else and then I saw this.” He motioned down into the pit and Freed followed his gesture until he saw the brawl below.
“Good heavens! Why are they fighting?!”
“Dunno. Blondie must've been separated from her friends.”
“But, this is unacceptable! Gildarts! You cannot stamp Lucy!”
The red-haired man stopped his attack suddenly and looked up at the two onlookers in confusion.
“I didn't know we had an audience. What brings you two here?”
“Don't change the subject!”
“Yeah, yeah. I get it, alright? I'm not gonna stamp her. Sheesh.”
“Then why are you fighting?!”
“If you must know, I'm bored! Besides, not like it's any of your business anyway. Why don't you go about your business and I'll go about mine?”
Freed sighed, grumbled, and then straightened up. “And Lucy is Bickslow's state of undress your doing?”
“Yeah right! What do I look like some kind of pervert?!” She yelled back defiantly.
“Well, you do carry a whip around and have been known to lose clothing almost as often as Gray.”
“Well unlike Gray, I don't do it intentionally and my Fleuve d'etoiles is a weapon, not some weird, scandalous thing!”
“In any case, seeing as how he isn't my teammate today, I suppose I can overlook this.”
“Thank you so much!” She said sarcastically. “Now go away!”
“Hmph. Very well. Gajeel, take this.” He threw a communication lacrima over the space between them. “I'll communicate if I come across Levy and you can tell me if you need assistance.”
“Got it.”
With that, the green-haired man walked along the Shift opening toward the northern area of the city. Gajeel watched as Lucy summoned Aries who created a wall of wool that aided in the Celestial Mage in escaping Guildarts, who, if the Dragon Slayer didn't know any better, seemingly allowed the soft, pink material to surround him. With his show over, he decided to head back south a little ways in hopes of finding some kind of trace of his blue-haired prey or her team.
It had only been a few minutes when a third altercation came crashing around, and into, him. Something solid hit him in the stomach, hard. He fell to the ground on his back and whatever had hit him was crushing his torso as he tried to get the air back into his lungs.
“Gah-the...hell?”
He sat up as much as he could with the crushing weight currently still holding him down. Before he could even get his bearings, he heard a familiar voice call out from somewhere in front of him.
“That's what ya get for interfering, Tubby.”
Suddenly, the pressure was removed from his chest and he was able to fully breathe again. He sat up immediately and rubbed the spot that had taken the initial hit before looking at the scene he'd stumbled upon. There was Laxus standing a few feet from him with a very familiar arm in his grasp.
“Droy?” He questioned.
“Oh, looky here. Just the guy I wanted to see.”
Gajeel was now on his feet and watched as the Thunder Dragon Slayer dropped Droy's arm so that it fell limply to join the rest of his unconscious body on the stone street.
“Laxus. The hell's goin' on here?”
“I'm glad you asked. Let me start by saying that the deal's off.”
“What?!”
“You heard me. Your wannabe girlfriend and her team figured out how to sneak up on me undetected and jumped me when I was just about to stamp Mira. They stopped me from marking her and I'm not lettin' it happen again, so if I find the little bookworm or your cat or the damn speedster, I'm gonna take em out and make sure they know who's bitches they are.”
“The hell ya are.” Gajeel growled out through gritted teeth. “Ya can't just back out because the Shrimp got the best of ya.”
“Oh, I can and I am. In fact, I'm pretty sure I hear 'em say something about headin' for the guildhall, so if you'll excuse me.”
Without another word, the S-Class wizard took off at a full sprint, not even bothering to stamp the still knocked out Shadow Gear member. Gajeel released a low growl and ran after him in a blind fury. He threw several iron poles in an attempt to trip Laxus up, but this proved ineffective and only seemed to urge him to pick up the pace. It was when the hall came into view that Gajeel finally had enough of whatever the hell was going on and he transformed his arms into iron bars to propel himself forward faster and when his feet hit the ground, he turned to shadow and positioned himself ahead of the other Slayer.
Laxus halted a few feet away from him when he saw the Iron Dragon Slayer revert to his former self. Instead of his face being filled with anger, as Gajeel would have expected, there was a surprisingly sinister smile gracing his features. Gajeel quirked a studded brow and tilted his head in confusion, but before he could question what was transpiring before him, runes of purple shone around him and his eyes widened dramatically.
“What the fuck?!”
A familiar, unsettling giggle caused his head to snap back to where Laxus had been standing. Though, now it was Mirajane Strauss before him and he found himself annoyed at how confused he'd been already today. His senses were usually there to keep him on his toes, but he was unable to smell or see through this ruse.
“We did it!” Mira cheered to someone behind him.
His whipped around to see the girl that he'd vowed to capture standing just outside of the guildhall doors, holding his damned smug cat.
“Thank you so much for the help, Mira! I don't think we could've done it without you!”
“Oh, don't worry about it. Besides, I owed you for coming to my rescue. Though, now that he's trapped, I should really get going now. Good luck you two!”
Gajeel heard the She-Devil leave, but didn't give her so much as a glance as he stared down Levy and Pantherlily. The Exceed was way too damn pleased for his own good and Levy, well Levy was smiling just as bright as she usually did. He had to fight his own smile from breaking onto his face, so he decided to speak up.
“Ya wanna tell me what the hell's goin' on here?”
“We've captured you, of course.” Lily stated simply.
“No shit. Ya wanna tell me how the hell neither of ya were able to be sensed and how I wasn't able to smell Mira through that disguise?”
“I guess we can explain some of that.” Levy answered. “I won't give you all of the details though because the game is still going on.”
“Oh yeah? Scared yer little trick ain't gonna hold?” He was smirking at her now.
She gave him a glare that only made his smile broaden. “Oh, it'll hold. I'm not worried about that at all, and seeing as how it's written to keep you in there until the game ends tomorrow morning, I guess there's no real harm in telling you about Mira.”
“Always love hearin' ya tell a good story.” He said as he watched her sit down in front of her barrier with Lily sitting comfortable on her legs, and damn if he wasn't jealous of the damn cat right now. He mirrored her and made himself comfortable on the ground, though he laid out on his side with his arm propping up his head.
She rolled her eyes with a smile. “Please. You always fall asleep when I try to tell you about the books I'm reading.”
“Tch-”
“She's not wrong, you know. I, however, really do enjoy when you recant a tale, Levy.”
“Thank you, Lily.” She said as she gave his head a light scratch.
I know what yer doin' ya damn flea-infested rodent. I ain't lettin' ya get to me.
“Now, let's see here...we came across Mira while she was battling Laxus.”
----------------------------FLASHBACK------------------------------
“Whoa, did you guys hear that?” Levy asked as the sound of two objects colliding rang through the air just on the other side of the building they were walking by.
“Yeah,” Jet said as he bent his knees. “sounds like someone's been found over here.”
“You don't think it's him, do you?” Droy asked nervously.
“It's unlikely,” Lily answered, “seeing as Gajeel would only be interested in fighting us to get to Levy.”
“Lily's right. We should probably try to sneak around, but...”
“You want to go help, don't you?” Jet asked with a shake of his head.
“Kind of.” She answered with a nervous smile. “I know it's probably not the best decision though, so you if you don't wan-”
“Of course we'll help!” Droy encouraged.
“I see no harm in aiding one of our friends.” Pantherlily said, voice filled with determination. “Jet, do you think you can go and assess the situation?”
“Oh, yeah!” He said with a cocky grin before disappearing from sight.
“You think it's Natsu?” Droy asked after a few seconds.
“He is the type to be destructive,” Pantherlily said knowingly, “even during a game such as this.”
“That's true,” Levy voiced, “but I don't think it's him. If it were, we'd definitely feel the heat from his attacks here.”
“You're so smart, Levy!” Droy cheered.
Jet returned then and the group waited in silence for his report.
“It's Mirajane and Laxus, so I think we're good to keep going. I did go a little further just to check if anyone else is in the area and it looks like Erza and Natsu have been fighting for quite awhile.”
“Any sign of Gajeel?” Lily asked.
“Yeah, he's heading west, but you never know with him. He could head this way soon.”
“Well, let's h-”
Just then the sky lit up with lightning and the ground rumbled beneath them as the thunder undoubtedly struck it. The looked up and could only just make out the outline of Mirajane's Satan Soul: Halphas form zigzagging in the air to avoid being hit. Although her speed was impressive, Laxus' thunder proved to be more so and before their very eyes she was hit by one bolt, followed by another, and another, and then six more; she fell to the ground and the team stood dumbfounded in their place for several seconds until Levy ran forwards.
Her body seemed to move on it's own and she didn't really know what she was expecting to see when she finally rounded the corner, but Laxus cradling Mira in an intimate, loving way was not it. She halted to a stop and felt her face flush from seeing them both in such a state, Mira back to her normal self being held to Laxus while he ran his fingers through her hair. Before she could decide whether or not to leave them, her team joined her and she watched as they all went slack jawed at the sight.
“I can't believe you got me.” Mira's voice said softly.
“I'm sorry to be so rough, Mir. I didn't want to hurt you.” Laxus said as he pushed some hair behind the She-Devil's ear.
“Don't be sorry. I didn't exactly go easy on you either.” She caressed his face and rubbed his cheek.
Laxus chuckled quietly. “That's an understatement, but I still won though.”
“I wouldn't be too sure about that.”
As if this were all some carefully calculated strategy, Team Shadow Gear, now with Pantherlily, burst into action. Jet landed a solid, speedy kick to the side of the Dragon Slayer's head while Droy's plants wrapped around his chest and added to the velocity of the blow to throw him against the nearest wall where Levy, being suspended in the air by Lily, sent the word 'Rock' flying just after he'd made contact. Mira got up and checked on her not-so-secret lover, who was out cold, and then, much to the shock of the others, began to strip him of his clothes.
“Look away, Levy!” Droy and Jet shouted while also covering each other's eyes.
The mentioned girl's face was now bright red as she used her own hands to cover her own eyes while the Exceed holding her floated back down to the ground. Mira giggled at the flustered group and proceeded to change out of Bickslow's clothing, while shooting a death glare at the two male members of Shadow Gear who promptly turned away. Once she'd gotten dressed into Laxus' clothes, and put his teammates unusual ensemble onto the unconscious man, she cleared her throat as if to signal that everyone was free to face her now.
“Thanks for coming to my rescue!” She said with a smile.
“Anytime.” Levy said with a grin of her own. “How'd you know that we would intervene?”
“I didn't really, but I was hoping that you would.”
“I'm glad we could be of service, Mira.” Pantherlily said politely.
“Me too! Though, if you hadn't, then I would've probably done the not-so-nice thing and ratted you all out to Laxus.” She giggled sweetly and the group all blanched.
“Glad it didn't come to that.” Jet said nervously.
“I am too! Now, tell me how you were able to sneak up on us. I mean, I know we were fighting and I was falling, but I still should have sensed you...and he definitely should have.”
“Well...” Levy started.
--------------------------PAUSE FLASHBACK---------------------------
“So, we told Mira how we were able to be undetected.” Levy went on.
“But ya ain't gonna tell me. I'm hurt, Shrimp.”
“Yeah, well...that's just too bad.” She said as sternly as she could.
Gajeel smirked. “Gotta say, I like it when yer mean.”
Levy blushed and Pantherlily shook his head. “As you were saying, Levy.” He encouraged.
-------------------------RESUME FLASHBACK--------------------------
“What're you gonna do now, Mira?” Droy asked.
“Well, I thought I would go and find Lisanna and Elfman. We got separated earlier and I want to make sure they're doing okay, but first I figured would I return the favor for you.”
“What do you mean?” They all asked in unison.
“Oh, I thought you might already know, but Gajeel is heading in this general direction.”
“WHAT?!” They yelled in a panic.
“Don't worry. I have just the plan to get him off of your case, at least for a little while. Levy, you've been studying enchantments more recently, right?”
“Oh...well, yes...”
“And Droy, how do you feel about putting on a little show?”
“Um...wh-what kind of show?”
----------------------------------END FLASHBACK-------------------------------
“And that's basically it up until now.”
“I gotta hand it to ya, it's an alright plan ya got.”
“Alright?” Levy asked skeptically.
“You do realize that the plan was a success, don't you?” Lily questioned.
“Yah, I see that I'm trapped, but how long d'ya think this is gonna hold me?” He grinned mischievously.
Levy cleared her throat. “As I told you before, it will hold you and it will hold you all day.”
“I can promise ya it won't, and I can also promise ya that once I'm out I'm comin' right for ya. Say that I won't find ya if that helps keep ya calm, but I will and once I do, yer gettin' marked with this little thing here.” He pulled out his moon shaped stamp and tossed it in the air. “And then durin' the festival yer gonna be servin' me in the outfit I made.”
Levy's eyes were wide and her face was red, but she shook her head and stood back up with her arms crossed and her head bent toward the barrier. Gajeel cocked an eyebrow at her confidence and remained lounging as he watched her.
“That's a really good story, Gajeel. If you ever decide to make it into a book, then let me know. In the meantime-”
“Levy, Lily come in!”
“Jet? What's going on?” Lily asked into the communication lacrima.
“We've got a big problem over here!”
Gajeel chuckled arrogantly. “See? Yer plan was alright, but it's already fallin' apart.”
Levy puffed her cheeks. “You can say that if you manage to get out of here before tomorrow morning. Jet, what's wrong?”
“Droy's out-”
“WHAT?!” Pantherlily and Levy yelled together.
“Gihee.”
“What happened?” Levy asked frantically.
“Natsu showed up out of nowhere, and I mean like the guy literally fell out of the sky and landed in front of me. Droy held him back and he got taken dow-”
“Jet?!”
“GET BACK HERE AND LET ME TAG YOU!!”
“That Salamander...always been a bit of a wildcard.” Gajeel teased.
“Jet, go to Checkpoint C. Lily and I will meet you there.”
“Leavin' so soon? Sure ya don't wanna stay and keep me company til I get outta here?”
“Hmph. I'll see you tomorrow, Gajeel.” With that Levy walked toward the staircase.
“Have a good night sleeping out here on the stone tonight. We'll meet up with you once the game ends.”
“Tch. I hope it storms tonight.”
“Wh-how...how could you say something so cruel?!”
“Gihee. Don't let the thunder bite, Lil.”
“Th-that is not funny!”
With that, the Exceed and the Script Mage flew off to an unknown destination. Gajeel pulled out his lacrima once they were no longer in sight and tried to speak into it, but a message popped up in the runes stating that magical items would be rendered useless within the confines of the enchantment. He chuckled and tossed it behind him.
Smart little thing. This is gonna be a fun day, Levy.
